These were serial bank robbers that had amassed armor-piercing bullets and automatic weapons. They had also made themselves complete body suits of Kevlar so they were pretty much invulnerable. At that time officers were only allowed to carry handguns, only SWAT was allowed to have long guns. Everything changed after this incident. The full documentary can be found under North Hollywood Shootout. There are two versions but I think that is the best one.

Phillips had full body armor from the shoulders/chest down to toe.
Emil only had a vest with trauma plates.
Emil was shot in the ass twice and that prompted him to get into the getaway car.
You are correct in saying that Patrol only had access to handguns, but they also had shotguns in their disposal. Only SWAT had the AR-15 fully automatic armor piercing ammo and military type equipment.
This is one of the best ones I think too.
I dunno why Phillips wouldn't just jump in the car and drive away...maybe he thought that the multiple helicopters wouldn't lose them so there was no point. So instead of go to jail for years he did us all a favor and ended it himself...
I guess they had robbed other banks for over a million in total. Why go back for more? That's alot of money back then and still is to this day 23 years later.

@@ajcook7777 AR does not mean automatic rifle. AR-15s are one pull one shot. You might be thinking of a different type of gun that is fully automatic. The officers probably do use AR-15s and not full on assault rifles.

I was six when this happened, but mom and dad wouldn't let my brothers and I watch it, but I can remember sneaking to see a lot of this footage appearing on the screen. At that age, I didn't know what it was, it just looked like a movie to me, so it was years later before I happened across the footage again and remembered. Now that I'm older I'm kinda incredulous that I thought "movie" when I saw this footage back then, but can't really blame myself since I believe it was the first shooting I ever saw on TV.

I still remember watching this on live T.V. It was on every major news channel. The showed the one gunman shooting himself, the other gunman almost killing officers and being captured, they showed it all. I’m pretty sure when they captured the one gunman an officer in the pile shot him somewhere on his body that ultimately killed him because the shot was in a spot he had full armor on. Even tho the police found better weapons in a pawn shop or gun shop it was still in a spot he shouldn’t of been shot in. Unless I’m thinking of another shooting but I’m pretty sure it was the longer living suspect

You know I kind of try to keep opinions to myself. I am a retired Sheriff's Deputy. It was hard on females back in the day. Made us work harder. We had to prove we could do the work. Everyone single officer who responded got there are hero's! Not only that, they responded fast! Consider where they are. The traffic is horrific! Driver's will often ignore first responders. Ambulance, fire trucks, police and anyone else that responds to emergencies. The police got there before the bank robbers even left the bank. For you to even suggest the responders were incompetent really pisses me off. You go out and willingly put your life on the line to protect people you don't know. You go and be shot and still fight to save lives. You don't have what it takes to do that. If you think they aren't afraid, or that they may never see their loved ones isn't thought of? Good grief! Bet you don't even vote for more funding so they can do their job's better.

    • @nonacee5065
      @nonacee5065 4 года назад +3

@@marshamoore8385 have to sincerely apologise for giving the impression that I even suggested incompetence ruled the scene. I just figured that once they realised the crims were wearing body armor, head or leg shots were an obvious target. It seemed they still consistently aimed at centre mass.
The police must have been trained to be good shots obviously not against a hail of bullets that never seemed to stop though, until the robbers had to reload their clips..... perfect time to take a head, leg shot, no?
You could see the fear, pain and adrenalin in the outgunned period. You have to agree though that swat did take forever which left the men vulnerable during entire drama if the footage of the event is in actual time.
Commandeering the armored van was a great idea?
The road and area was closed off before the robbers left the bank, so the van could have been there the whole time?
Officers risked their lives using flimsy protection until the van was used.
As an emergency responder myself there can be a lot of hindsight and what ifs but it's amazing how quickly one can think and react.
A hail of bullets makes a difference though in thinking ability I'm sure, never had to experience that.
I'm really glad it worked out for all involved.
There were definite hero's that day.
So once again sincere apology for any offence or insult against those involved or those who risk their lives daily.

@@nonacee5065 Thank you so much for clarifying what you meant. As a First Responer yourself and me a retired one (thank God), there isn't much positive feedback for us. But because of this, swat officer's no longer have to go to a central location for armaments or ballistic protection. We now (some departments) have access to Army combat vehicles. I think this is why we don't see this type of thing much anymore. The tragity is these cowards are now targeting our children. Kill a kid lose your life! Do not pass go, do not earn the right to a trial free of charge. At some point people such as ourselves need to have the the same right's as the criminals themselves. Usually it's the few cop's that are rotten to the core that cause us more harm than the criminals. Thank you again for the clarification.
