- A feminist retelling of the Theseus & the minotaur myth, "Ariadne" by Jennifer Saint is exactly the tale we've been waiting for. The princess of Crete, Ariadne falls madly in love with an Athenian prince after he arrives on the island to take on the terrifying labyrinth that rumbles beneath the palace of Knossos; inside it's dark twists and turns lives the minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster born to the royal family. Ariadne puts herself at risk of societal and familial banishment by aiding Theseus in his victory and fleeing the island to start a new life with him on mainland Greece ... well, she thinks. That is, until he leaves her stranded on the island of Naxos to fend for herself in the hope she dies.

But Saint's novel doesn't allow her audience to pity our princess of Crete. Throughout the narrative, we watch Ariadne grow into a strong and independent woman, the perfect bride for the powerful god, Dionysus. Along with Ariadne's development, Saint also awards her audience with the secondary strong female role of Ariadne's sister, Phaedra. Through Phaedra we see the other half of the myth not often told in relation to Ariadne's story: one of the pain left in the aftermath of Crete, and the ways Ariadne's decisions impacted her youngest sister in the most tragic of ways.

Fun fact :) Dionysus actually doe deify Ariadne after bringing her back from Hades and is regularly depicted alongside him. She became the goddess of labyrinths
Im kinda devastated that the book ends with her dying and not with her later becoming a goddess (like a very popular and well known version of her myth says). On the other hand it shows that 1. women are just toys used by the gods and men and 2. it fits with how Ariadnes personality and story was written and I can imagine that she wouldn’t want to be on the Olymp (although it should be possible for the still live on Naxos, even as a goddess, like Dionysos did).
I also kind of wished that Ariadne had some sort of „sexual empowerment“. I mean Dionysos is a crazy god associated with parties, being drunk and sometimes also with lust and õrgies. Ariadne, a princess who’s taught of always being nice and being a virgin is important, having some fort of sexual development thanks to Dionysus would’ve been cool. First like „okay what they’re doing at these rituals is kinda weird“ then „okay it’s actually not that bad“ and from „okay if you like to do all that that’s cool it’s not for me“ to her also dancing and signing around, drinking wine and experiencing with her sexuality
I thought that was going to happen in the book too but it was still good nonetheless

I kinda like how tragic the „love“ of Ariadne and Theseus is. I mean he very likely is a liar and lied about Ariadne being killed by snake. But it’s also very possible that he said the truth about him having a VERY realistic dream sent by the gods so that he’d abandon Ariadne and that he actually thought that. I mean we know the gods tortured Ariadnes mother, we know they made Dionysos insane, and, although not mentioned, in the original myth Phaidra fell in love with her stepson bc she was cursed by Aphrodite who was mad that he decided to stay a virgin. And the possibility that Theseus might have said the truth and actually would’ve taken her with her, makes it even more tragic
I’d read Circe by Madeline Miller which does actually mention Ariadne, Theseus and the Minotaur while not going into great detail but telling you enough to know what happens. Since this book came out I have been umming and ahhing over whether to read it or not but I’ve finally bought it and really can’t wait to see how it’s written. I love Greek mythology for its romance and bloodshed and mythical creatures, and I know I’m super late to the party, but here’s hoping it doesn’t disappoint 🤞🏼

In some way Madeline and Jennifer have a pretty similar writing style- so if you enjoyed Circe, I highly recommend Ariadne!

I knew Theseus was gonna turn out to be horrible when he was first introduced, but it was really disappointing to see how Dionysus turned out. I felt like the ending just tapered off really quick with no satisfying conclusion.

LOL. This reminds me of undergrad when my greek prof called Theseus your typical uber, handsome male lead in movies who gets by off his physical charm, charisma and dumb luck despite lacking in the brains department. She told us the version in which Theseus forgets to take Ariadne with him because he was so excited to get back home. On top of this excitement, he also forgets to change the sails, causing his father's suicide. Great vid! always interesting to see the same story from a different lens.

(So sorry about my english, is not my first languaje) Thank you for the review! It was really fun and you look so exited about the book that now I really want to read it!! I'm not a fan of Theseus either. I never understanded why everybody think of him as the greatest hero (I think it was the atheneans fault, they loved him): he abandoned Ariadne, cheat on Fedra, kidnap Helena, order Hipolito's death! (his own son!). I hate him too. The incredible, marvelous tale "La casa de Asterión" ("Asterion's Hause"?) by Jorge Luis Borges, which portreit de minotaur like a lonely, sensible, soul, doesn't help. And well, Borges is our national literature pride here in Argentina, so, if you read ir already and want to tell us what you think about it, it would be great!

I know Saint doesn't necessarily share all of Ariadne's views, but Ariadne is wrong to conflate the Olympian gods with mortal men when the Olympians run roughshod over mortal women. In the Bronze Age mythology, Zeus, Poseidon and Dionysus *are not* men, they are something categorically different. Dionysus is as awful as any god. Remember in Euripides the Bacchae, the Greek words use an emphatic form of the verb to be when the Maenads point out "Dionysus IS less than none of the gods." The events of the play prove it...
She also shares Ariadne's sister's view Phaedra as well. I remember there are some pages in the book reminded me of Bacchae by Euripides.
