Awesome!! One of the things I love when watching you all's videos is when things amaze you both.. I kept hearing Danny say look at that! Every time my husband and myself pick anything we are the same way!! Even after 40 yrs ( Dec 19th) of marriage and planting a garden every year when we pick our fruits and veggies we are amazed by God's perfect bounty.

I will sure miss my orange tree at the home I left 8/13. For 35 years if the mist delicious oranges. Nailed boxes to my family all over the U.S. In February, knowing it would be my last year, I stopped counting at 460 and lost track after that. Those nights of freeze, I'd go out and spray the tree down with a hose a couple times a night. Never lost too many. Luckily, we had very few days that the freeze held thru the day. I'm in Idaho now. Might order me your Louisiana orange tree but we don't get much above freezing right now. It would mostlikely die in transit right now.
Thank you for the constant inspiration and knowledge. Y'all have become my family since losing my hubby of 48 years on 8/23. I always ate the pith, I'd slice off the thin layer of orange as it is not digestible
    Blessings

I planted a Miso Satsuma and Improved Meyer Lemon this year on the south side of the house. I couldn't help it and let them fruit. Got 11 satsumas. Awesome slip-skin. Next will be the lemons. I'm about 1 hour north of Houston. A friend closer to Houston has a lemon as tall as her house and gets 100's of lemons each year.

I am sitting here contemplating picking some of our naval oranges. Recently, I've been on some high powered antibiotics and needed some probiotics. I found these best tasting popsicles made from fermented oranges and mangos. They're expensive for how many come in the package, so I'm going to research how to make my own. We'll give some away and I'll slice and dehydrate some for hot tea. Orange zest is another thing I make and we eat a ton of them. As soon as the last orange is picked, the tree puts on new blooms and the whole area smells heavenly. The peels also make a great addition to vinegar and herbs for cleaning my house. Love the video, y'all look like you're having a blast. God bless y'all!

To make your oranges easier to peel, cut across the top where the stem is and remove it. Then score the whole orange in quarters around the orange from the top cut and then back up, turn the orange to the center of the other cut and make another like a cross. Then peel from the cut edge to the bottom where they cross. Grew up on 1000 acres of citrus in AZ, now living in NM and MISSING the heck out of my citrus. Looking for a cold tolerant orange tree for here, no luck so far. If you take the oranges and store them in a garage or root cellar where they stay cold but not freezing they will keep much longer. God bless

Growing citrus is great! We can't do it up here without a heated greenhouse and that just ain't happening for a pile of citrusy-goodness. Cost prohibitive.
FYI - there's a TON of Vitamin C out in The Gardens. If you grow your own food, you're likely getting enough even without Citrus. Peppers, Kale, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Strawberries, Kiwi - these all have MORE vitamin C per unit weight than Oranges.

You bring back my childhood memories of Christmas. My daddy would take us to the citrus packing house to buy several cases of fruit. My favorites were the small reject satsuma tangerines. Those ones had really loose skin. They were the sweetest.... but they couldnt ship them cross country because they were so ripe.
My grapefruit tree gave and gave this year. Just pulled the last ones iff the tree. Frosts makes them dry and pithy.
This week, i need to mulch the trees. Protecting roots from freeze is important. Last year i used bales of pine shavings, and it worked great.

I'm super jealous. I've got about 30 little walnut to ping pong ball sized calamondine oranges 🍊 on my potted tree. There were hundreds but its been dropping them since it put them on.
Even just dropping a couple of the itty-bitty ones into hot water perfumes the whole house.
The few that ripen I'm hoping to make orange chicken with. But oof! They are a sour seedy little critter!
I ordered a key lime plant about 8 years ago that finally fruited last winter. I was so excited until it ripened into another calamondine orange 😳
I might go to a local chain nursery and just fork out the big bucks for one of their key limes. Or I'm thinking I might sweet talk my mother and aunty, that when they go south to stay the winter with my other aunty and uncle in Florida, to try to find me a small potted key lime.
Or even a new finger lime.
I got to try it last year and I really enjoyed the flavor and the little pops of the unique pulp. It comes out in little pearls of juicy lime. But I'm sure that plant will be out of my budget for awhile.
    Have a happy day!

If you've got electricity in the greenhouse, I wonder if a slightly warm electric blanket over that lemon tree at night and around the pot base during the day (so it would still get sunlight) would buy you a lot more time for it to ripen.

I picked some of my satsumas as early as July and they were okay. Not awesome, but good enough for a taste. I also don't worry too much about this cold. I have always left them on and they do fine for the most part. I'm having the same weather as y'all are. I also find, sometimes, the smaller satsumas to be more sweet and less pithy. The large ones tend to be kinda dehydrated, but not always. This year's crop is all around sweet.
