I seen one of these the other day. Even said to the guy behind the counter." That's actually a really fair deal. Anymore everyone wants the capacity of a 365 or 43x "
My first firearm purchase was the Shield 1.0 last month for $380. I was gonna go with a M&P 9 due to the larger capacity or the Glock 19 but I'm getting my CCW soon and I wanted something a wee smaller in frame and went with the Shield. I'm wondering if I should've waited now. lol I haven't shot my Shield yet either, need to find a place to go shooting here. All the ranges around me just doesn't sound ideal with some of their rules. I’ve been looking at the Shield lineup for some time. I appreciate your straightforward, clear review - including the history, the market competition, and all the comparisons. Detailed, matter of fact, well presented. Thank you.
The slide release isn’t meant to be used as such. It’s a slide lock that’s meant to be slingshotted. That being said, one can file down the internal slide catch lever ever so slightly - talking a few mm - to rectify that issue. I did that on my 1.0 and works like a charm. The new trigger on the Shield Plus, with the sure to be upgrade of an optic cut on a performance center, will make this gun worth it and then some.
@G Soap I have some guns that do that and some that don't. It's a coo feature tho. Wish all of them did it but yea I would've file any firearm. Chief make it a liability issue
@G Soap IDK I use the button as a stop and a release. I can see if some guns are old and springs are wore out it wouldn't throw slide hard enough to chamber a round but all modern handguns will function with the slide stop as a slide release. I do think the whole mag slap feature can be dangerous. I was shooting my grand power p40 which does it and it fired the first round!!! Granted I might of had my finger still on trigger but it did take me back a second. But yea I think over time most guns will eventually do it if it was designed to or not. If you think about it it could just be from the jarring of the handgun allowing the slide lock/release button to move out of the way.
I have S&W 9mm Shield Plus. Installed a 3 5/8 inch True Precision Treaded Barrel. Better lockup, Stability and Accuracy. Also Hogue Grip. I also have a S&W Shield. I upgraded the Trigger and installed a 3 5/8 inch Faxon Barrel. Also Hogue Grip. Reliability no change. Very accurate .Shooting 12 ounces hanging beer cans 20 yard easy and at 40 yards Body size Targets. I don't need the PC 4 inch Shield Plus. I also Have a SD9VE. Installed Apex Trigger, Slide Bar and Slide Lock upgraded to Stainless Steel. No Malfunctions. I also have a Great Condition S&W M&P 40 Police Trade in. The police officer must have upgraded the Trigger Springs. Still has the Henge Trigger, But it shoots very well and the Trigger feels good. Bought a Gun Light for it.
I recently bought a second hand Shield Plus that had never been fired. The owner added Hogue grips and Truglow sights to it, then traded it in. I've put several hundred rounds through it and it is extremely accurate, reliable, and very fun to shoot. I will probably replace the Truglow sights with night sights. I highly recommend this gun to anyone interested in a very concealable compact firearm. I'm a longtime Glock boy but this is a great piece from S&W!
I really appreciate this whole segment of the market. After handling most of the offerings, I picked the Shield Plus. It felt more substantial in my hand than the rest, even though it’s about the same size, and it is a pleasure to shoot.
The ruger Max 9 with the red dot slide cut and the day/night sights looks like a better buy. The trigger looks like it could be better on the S&W Plus. The Springfield Hellcat and the Sig 365 definitely have some solid competition now.
@@VincitOmniaVeritas7 and it's about time lol I don't like Springfield pistols or the absolutely UNSAFE Sig 365. The Ruger Max 9 looks promising, and so does the S&W Shield Plus. Just bought the new M&P 9 shield plus, I think it came out in late 2021 going into 2022 and let me say it is the best 9mm I’ve ever shot hands down! I highly recommend it for entry- intermediate shooters! I have a $1500 dollar pistol at home (not gonna name any names) and the M&P’s trigger is hands down way smoother and breaks way better than it.
Damnit! I wasnt planning to buy another new CCW gun but there it is, perfection. If they produce a Shield Plus XL (with a longer slide) I will buy one of each and CCW them both. I love it.
@@MALICEM12 it’s got texturing on it. How is it not supposed to be a slide release you know? When I hear this cop out I immediately know it’s just a fact they didn’t want to mess with it so the nomenclature was changed to reflect the short coming.
I wanted a new compact pistol, just bought a Sheild Plus and am impressed with it. I'm glad my local FFL talked me into spending the extra $50 for Sheild Plus over the standard Sheild.
Yeah, I like my shield but the 365 is still going to be optimal in comparison. Especially in the XL model. Cleanest trigger in a micro 9 you're ever going to find, rail setup for a weapon light and has the setup for a red dot as well. Extended magazine 15 + 1 and it still fits completely in my hand. The hellcat is garbage. Way too much side to side play in the trigger. Barely too much lateral pressure will render it dead. They cheaped out on the metal way more than Sig even did with the original 365 that had the primer scrape issue. It's an expensive paperweight. The Glock works fine but still can't compete and can't even properly be considered a micro nine or really even a subcompact. It's too big for that. Fact is Glock just doesn't care about micro pistols.
I own a 1.0 .40S&W full size M&P. I use it often with a KKM 9mm converted barrel. It came with factory 3 dot night sights. I may sell it & get a 2.0 model with no ambi safety.
That's why I love my 2.0 Subcompact. I can use 10 round, 12 round, 15 round and 17 round OEM mags. Yeah it's a little wider but you can't beat the versatility. Regardless.. I'm still picking up a Shield plus lol
The slide “release” is difficult bc it is not a release. It is a lock. If you look at manual the slide isn’t designed to be released by just popping that down but by going over and just racking it as you ended up doing naturally.
It would be great to see that trigger carry over to the rest of the line for sure. If it does I will be buying lots of M&P's as I love them. This new Shield is definitely on my must purchase list.
If they start putting this Plus trigger in the whole M&P line, S&W will have the best offerings out there. I prefer M&Ps, but the older trigger has always been a letdown to many people. I don't mind it, but an Apex is always close behind for one. I don't feel the need for an Apex with the Shield Plus.
I just bought one with the bug out bag kit. Loved it!!! Best money on a gun I've ever spent. Mine is optics ready and came with night sights!!! Bug out bag had a first aid kit with 3, count em 3 thirteen round extended mags for a total of 5 mags!!! Showed it to my buddy and he ordered one from a gunstore on the spot! I carry the sig p365XL as my off duty carry but I think I'm gonna be switching it up here in a few days! Thanks for the info and great video bro!!! 😃👍
I have one with the porting from the performance center and it's great. My wife's P365 suffered the typical trigger malfunction after 5 rounds, so head to head at 500 rounds the S&W is still running and the P365 is at about 100 rounds after coming back from Sig. I only use the 13 round mag. Only drawback is magazine availability and its great for people like me with hobbit size hands
I haven't met a person who had had an issue with their P365. Even at the fun shoot we had at our range with 17 people where about 12 had P365's (including me) and the only gun that broke was a G43x. My P365 FCU that was born about 1yr after the P365 release has 1000rds, and my recent P365 FCU that I got mid 2023 has 2000rds~.
Pretty nice weapon but Ruger just released basically the same platform with a TFO front sight for $499.00. It will be interesting to see how many models in this class will be released this year.
To your point Stormy, at $499, the Ruger Max 9 includes the cut for a Micro Red Dot optic as a standard feature! Not an upgrade requiring more $$$ to be spent . Ruger really loaded it with features. Some nice new guns dropped today!!
Meanwhile Taurus is making the G3C TORO with 3, 12 rounds magazines straight out of the box standard. Other companies need to step their mag game up if they want to truly compete for my money with their optic ready handguns.

I've been carrying the P365 since 2018. I've had to send it in twice now for repairs in the last 4k or so rounds. I really like the M&P 2.0 compact that I have and I'm tempted to pick one of these up to carry.
3:26 That $553 MSRP is a little misleading: it's for the non-night sights version. With night sights the MSRP is $623. Since P365's all come with night sights, it should be compared with the higher priced Shield Plus :)
I had a shield 1.0 for a while and it was OK. I checked out the 2.0 and felt that the grip stippling was a little too aggressive for me and it still only held 8 rounds. Being a sig guy, when the p365 came out, I was excited. I eventually got one after they worked the bugs out and instantly fell in love with it. Now I've added the xl grip module which I believe is far better than the standard grip module plus it has a 12 round flush fit magazine. It shoots even better now and fits my hand perfectly. The shield is a great gun and it looks like they improved it drastically. I'll have to tell my brother in law about it because he loves his shield. Thanks for the review
I absolutely love and respect Smith & Wesson as a manufacturer. Hopefully, if an M&P 3.0 series comes out, they will listen to their customer base and make the trigger like most other striker-fired handguns. The hinged trigger in my opinion isn't all that bad or unreliable as I've had no issues with it, but it's definitely a weird and unfavorable design.
the max-9 being based on the security-9 is a smart move and simplifys logistics; on the dark side...the lcp, lcp2, lc9, lc380, lc9s, lc9s pro, ec9s, security-9, and max-9 all share the same aluminum chassis pinned inside a polymer frame shell; Kel-Tec developed it & under heavy recoil loads the pins can start walking out (especially the micro models -- lcp & lcp2); Skky also uses the same build architecture and there are reports of pins walking... I never had pins walking on any of the S&W polymer framed pistols I have owned on & off over the years (bodyguard 380 x 2, sd9ve x3, shield 1.0 x 3, sd40ve x1, sw9ve x 1, sd9 x 1, m&p 9 2.0 long slide x 1, m&p 9 1.0 compact x 1, and m&p 40 1.0 x 1)...I still have one of my shield 9's and it isn't going anywhere
Great Video, as always!! I bought the Shield PLUS Optics Ready with night sights for the new lower retail price of $449. I added a SwampFox Sentinel Red Dot and a TLR-6 Light/Laser combo. Although the trigger is good; it did get better with a break-in.
I was a big Kimber fan, with my micro 9 Raptor having corrosion problems I looked at S&W. I looked at many 9mm carry guns and fell in love with the 3.1 Shield plus PC ported version. And the price made this purchase a no brainer.
The shield 2.0 is my favorite carry gun. I just crawled out of bed groggy Eyed to take my morning shit after reading the title I’m wide awake and pumped as ever! Eff yea!
Just ordered my copy. I've always loved the design of the Shield but came into the market when other options were available. This will likely go in the carry rotation if it is as reliable as the OG Shield, which it most certainly looks like it. This will take market share from Sig and SprIngfield for those of us who don't like being beta tested on nor like Croatian guns with no parts availability. Thankfully we have options. Bravo S&W!
just FYI part of the reason for the hard slide release is you are practicing with it unloaded. The mag is built in a way that makes it harder to release when empty, aka making it more reliable for reloading. At lease that's what the guy at the gun store said lol.
I've loved this handgun the whole time I've owned/carried it. This, the Equalizer, and my P365s (Reg, XL & Macro) are what I carry in my rotation, all of which are comfortable to the point that I most times don't even know they're there.
The sig p365 had a couple hiccups when it first came out, which led to a lot of people not bring able to trust Sig. Then there's the Springfield Hellcat, which holds one more round than the Sig but it's beloved by chuds who think XD's are legitimate firearms. And there's the Glock 48/43x, except you have to buy aftermarket mags for an arm and a leg. Smith and Wesson might actually bring something actually good from the get go. American made, with some pedigree from the CCW community.
@@JumCuggler Sure! Yeah at this point it's a meme lmao, for me personally it's not ideal. It's been said before, magazine feed lips can be damaged easily, the roll pins walk out after a couple thousand rounds, grip safety compromises the firearm if it goes out (which has been reported to do), made in Croatia. Not saying I wouldn't use it if it were my only choice, but for the money a Smith and Wesson M2.0 series is a way better value, priced similarly to a Springfield (and made in USA).
I don’t know if it’s unusual, but the small weight & size advantage of the p365 makes a huge difference on whether I carry or not. I love my Shield but I only carried it occasionally. Since the p365 arrived, I carry every day. Maybe other people have a kind of “hard” weight threshold that determines if they actually EDC too?
I prefer the Sig P365 as a CCW, but still carry my S&W 1911 SC Roundtail 45ACP as my other CCW, weight of a full-size 1911/43 ounces vs 29 for my LW makes the 1911 Gov’t my nightstand gun
It's a little too small for me w/ the 10rd, but just about perfect w/ the 13rd. I can get a full grip and still plenty concealable. The 15rd is great for the range.
Well from a G43 shooter’s perspective, Dang it! I just ahoot it better without working at it. I picked the Shield Plus for a relative but then borrowed it to test out. 25-15-7 10 for 10 without effort. I can’t do that with my G43 without molligains. Nevermind, I’d have to carry a spare mag to equal the stock Plus mag.
i have the new Smith & Wesson Shield and its an awesome gun to shoot at the range. i love the recoil of it almost feels like you are shooting a much bigger caliber.
I've said it since the P365 and I'll say it again... When will companies apply this same magazine technology to mid and full size guns? I can't be the only one who wants to see a gun like a Glock 19 holding 22 rounds in a flush fit magazine am I?
Because at some point you would need a double and a half stack or a tri-stack magazine, and once you get beyond double stack the reliability generally takes a hit (and your width would increase as well).
@@Murphy82nd Well there were several prominent sub gun magazine designs that solved that. But also, just look at Shield Arms with the G43X and G48 magazines. For a Glock in particular, removing the polymer shell around the mag changes a lot. But I'm not specifically talking just Glocks. I'd also like to see Micro Compact .45's, .40's and 10mm's. Perhaps this new revolution of magazines could even revive the .45 GAP cartridge if done right.
It is the same double-stack as G19, just thinner mag walls (steel, not plastic) and narrow mag well. So with the same mag tech, you get G48 with that 15rd aftermarket mag, not "22 rds". 2.5 stack, double-feed mags are possible, but nobody makes them. Would give you about 3 extra rounds compared to G19, but nobody makes pistols like that. Double-feed mag alone gives 1 or 2 extra rounds, see GSh-18 for example.
You dont need to be a bullet hose. Battles are won with aimed fire. 🎯 I tote a 12rd Glock gen 5 9mm 26 at work. I tote a 17rd Magpul magazine as a spare.
@@DavidLLambertmobile Oh you're one of those "If ya can't do it with 7 then you shouldn't try at all!" kinda guys I see. It's not about need vs desire. Besides, the military applications are quite significant for something like that.

Thanks for the great review. I bought the original Shield and hated it so much I only put 250 rounds through it before I sold it. Based on this review, I will now consider a Shield Plus.
I'm not knocking this in the least bit by saying this, I love S&W, and have actually owned a shield that I loved, but I'm good with my Gen 5 Glock 26. I carry 11 rounds with stock mag with an added pinky extention purely for grip, but if I want I can either add +2 extentions on the stock mags, or even better just carry any of the larger capacity double stack mags. I picked mine up last year with Ameriglo night sights and it was about $600. Ambi slide release, smooth trigger with a great improvement over the earlier generations, and marksman barrel. I'm more than happy with it and it hides away on my waist line just beautifully. That being said, If I didn't have it, and wanted a compact double stack, this new Shield would definitely be top of my list and I hope to get to shoot one now that I see this. I love all of these amazing new higher capacity tiny nines. It's an exciting time to be a gun guy 😂.
True, but I personally don't care for the too long harder to conceal grip of the P365 and like the fatter feel of the Plus grip with my big hands. Nicer mag release on the Plus also.
Just picked up a shield plus on an easter special. Came with optic cut, night sights and 5 magazines + a bugout "bag" (more like a satchel or man purse) and a med kit, PLUS a $50 rebate. Got all that for only 600, after rebate that's 550. I got mine at my local gun shop but online you can find em for 580 I think, but after shipping and ffl transfer fee's you'll pay about what I did but damn 3 extra magazines, night sights, $50 rebate, the med kit/bag combo, killer deal I couldn't pass up

I’ve had so many different types of handguns over the last 26yrs and my ultimate Cary gun is the original shield, never ever has had a hiccup. Best one ever so I’m exited for the plus model.
I got around this by adding MagGuts followers, springs and base plates to my (original) M&P Shield 9. Adds 1/8" to the flush & extended mags - which actually helps. Here in NYS we serfs are limited to 10 rounds; so that got me to the top limit with the extended magazine. LOVE the pistol. Though I like the concept of the new flat trigger (haven't tried one) on the Plus. The original isn't bad in use. Still my EDC choice.

You could always replace rear sight with an rmr plate on these ❤
@G Soap I have some guns that do that and some that don't.
@G Soap haha my 1st gun was a s&w and thought it was the normal way to do things .

I’ve carried a regular shield 2.0 and even a 1.0 for years, I trust in big blue and in James shorts I will be buying it and know I’m already in love
I’m still carrying my old shield. Love it.
Me too!
I love mine, too...except for the slide release issue.
I can’t kill mine. Thing just keeps on running.
Shield footprint but more rounds!? Plus a decent price? S&W smacked this one out of the park 👍

Just in time to compete with the new Ruger MAX-9!
And here comes S&W with the steel chair!
The ruger Max 9 with the red dot slide cut and the day/night sights looks like a better buy. The trigger looks like it could be better on the S&W Plus. The Springfield Hellcat and the Sig 365 definitely have some solid competition now.

@@leahcimthgirw3163 hype to see it. I love when the market challenges itself and makes itself grow.
@@NDTexan spot on bröther. I LOVE the shield don’t even have a 365 and I’d still take it

Hmmmm...they just had the Subcompact which also has very similar specs
That's why I love my 2.0 Subcompact. I can use 10 round, 12 round, 15 round and 17 round OEM mags. Yeah it's a little wider but you can't beat the versatility. Regardless.. I'm still picking up a Shield plus lol
@@85DJW And you also get an accessory rail.
The slide “release” is difficult bc it is not a release. It is a lock. If you look at manual the slide isn’t designed to be released by just popping that down but by going over and just racking it as you ended up doing naturally.
The Shield as been my CCW for years. Love that little gun, and can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

I have one with the porting from the performance center and it's great. My wife's P365 suffered the typical trigger malfunction after 5 rounds, so head to head at 500 rounds the S&W is still running and the P365 is at about 100 rounds after coming back from Sig.
Thank you, very informative. The "no step on snek" holster is great!
"making it probably the cheapest micro 9"
Ruger max-9 : starts existing
Except
the max-9 being based on the security-9 is a smart move and simplifys logistics; on the dark side...the lcp, lcp2, lc9, lc380, lc9s, lc9s pro, ec9s, security-9, and max-9 all share the same aluminum chassis pinned inside a polymer frame shell; Kel-Tec developed it & under heavy recoil loads the pins can start walking out (especially the micro models -- lcp & lcp2); Skky also uses the same build architecture and there are reports of pins walking...

I bought the Shield PLUS Optics Ready with night sights for the new lower retail price of $449. I added a SwampFox Sentinel Red Dot and a TLR-6 Light/Laser combo. Although the trigger is good; it did get better with a break-in.
That’s a good deal, where at?
I was a big Kimber fan, with my micro 9 Raptor having corrosion problems I looked at S&W. I looked at many 9mm carry guns and fell in love with the 3.1 Shield plus PC ported version. And the price made this purchase a no brainer.

@@JumCuggler Sure! Yeah at this point it's a meme lmao, for me personally it's not ideal. Pearce pinky extension floor plate on the 10rd magazine allows you to get a full grip .. they are only $10-$12
Well from a G43 shooter’s perspective, Dang it!

Sitting here looking over my new Shield Plus that I just picked up today. It's pretty sweet!!
Is the slide stop still stiff as a board like the original Shield?
I have the Hellcat and love it, but Smith & Wesson has some of the best feeling grips in handguns with their M&P's and Shields, so this one probably feels great in the hands. I haven't seen one IRL yet though.
When will the mags be available for sale?.....Im totally pumped for this but gotta get those mags before team blue says they are to dangerous for me.
Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for: The coveted James Reeves underside crotch shot.
Thank God almighty you weren't wearing your shorts for that low camera angle 🤣
Lmao
🍆💦💦💦
😂😂
Umbros were banned when I was in Catholic School 🤣🍻
7:40 HEADPHONE WARNING!
He goes from talking very silent to instantly switching to the sound of gunfire and it's loud AF, if you are wearing headphones beware!
Yeah, but does it shoot better than the Sig p365 which is dead nuts accurate? You should do a comparison video James.
Agreed. And the P365 is lighter and smaller...if we're most concerned about concealability.
Just picked up a new Plus from auction for $299. I always enjoyed the OG and 2.0. The Plus trigger, texture, capacity make it even better.
Hey James: I really enjoy your gun review videos; they are the best on the Internet: detailed, comprehensive, and honest. I am in the market for a double stack, high capacity small subcompact 9mm carry pistol, and the Shield Plus is on the short list. Again, great gun review video, and I look forward to your future productions.
