The Inner Symposium Book Club just read the novel Moonchild by Crowley and while it is not great fiction, it does give valuable insights into his philosophy and attitudes in a fairly digestible form.
Magick without Tears is a summary of correspondences of Crowley to one of his students. A lot of questions you might have Crowley explains himself in that book.
THELEMA says ELEMENTAL? STAR OF DAVID was stolen too, we better rebrand that as ELEMENTAL ALL CONNECTED in meaning of the SYMBOL. WICCA says VIKING KA/BODY/MATTER/MAAT/MARTA. ? WICCA is love, THELEMA under CROWLEY is not safe.
The guy was imperfect. He never pretended to be otherwise. But to hell with self-denial, I love the guy. Uncle Al has always meant a lot to me. Thank you so much for shining such a clear light on the man, the myth, the legend that he was and in many ways, remains today. And thank you for not dwelling on his association with Satan worship. The more Crowley one reads and understands, the less important the Christian devil becomes. I hope to see a day when this becomes common knowledge among spiritual seekers, even if said seekers after truth and penetration into the Mystery aren't particularly interested in Crowley's own work at all. It's enough to know that he had the guts to be who he was at the time he was at all. And I'll be damned if certain examples of his religious syncretism such as his book, I believe penned during the years Israel Regardie served as his secretary, "777", aren't absolutely amazing examples for their time, especially given the fact that the closest anyone had come before was Frazier with his "Golden Bough". You rock.
It is important to note that the name Thelema is from Rabelais' book Gargantua and Pentagruel. In the book, the main character founds a utopic monestrary by the same name, whose only monastic rule was, of course, "Do what thou wilt," and which represented a reunderstanding of how leisured liberty can produce the best minds, rather than the chastised, worker-drones and sensualist hypocrites that the Church produced. It is a satirical work of the highest order and an understanding of it seems necessary for an understanding of what Crowley was aiming for.
Wonderful video Dr. Puca! Crowley has long been among my favorite figures. He contributed so much to the occult, magick, and Noepaganism as to have been a more important figure than he some times has gotten credit for. We can recognize his contributions to occultizim, magick, Wicca, (though i don't think he was interested in directly founding a witchcraft religion he seemed to look at what Gardner was doing approvingly), Satanism, (though obviously not Satanic himself), Chaos Magick, etc. Sure he embraced the Wickedest Man Alive perception. Though I think much like his friend Gerald Gardner he merely saw potentially negative attention towards publicizing his work as preferable to none at all.
Informative video. There is a book I don’t think you mentioned: Confessions. An auto hagiography. I think it’s out of print but we’ll worth a read if you can get it. I’ll leave you with a titbit: Crowley & the author of the DevIl Rides ou, Dennis Wheatley actually arranged to met at one of the big London Hotels. The meeting took place but neither man committed what had happened to paper. They never met again.
Nice Synopsis, you could really do a lot just in regards to Crowley and his influence. Props to Crowley! I’m not usually a fan but he did accomplish a lot. Cool look, you could’ve stepped out of a Necronomicon gateway.
Great video. Crowley is an interesting character that looms large for any Western contemporary occult/wiccan/magickal tradition. Once you realize what he's talking about, and trust me, you have to read, re-read, and then re-re-read his writings to figure most of it out (it started for me in an academic class), you begin to realize just what an influence he's had, mostly without any intention by, or attribution to, him. A lot of what he's saying is "coded" (like the chapter "On the bloody sacrifice" in M in T&P), or obfuscated but becomes clearer the more you read. His Confessions is honestly a great read, and contains many keys for his other work. When you then go look at published rituals for other groups (I'm looking clearly at Gardner et al), you can see where their rituals came from. And isn't Chaos Magick's Gnosis sex magick? Since any instruction I know includes that as a method of achieving it? And isn't where we've ended up but the manifestation of his emphasis on the individual in Western religion anyhow? Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to more on the subject. Excellent job as usual.
A few years back I went on a full journey of discovery about Crowley, I visited where he was born and all the places in the UK I knew to either have once belonged to him or that held his artifacts, read all of his works which were available at the time, I also managed to speak with some people who were close to his family (I will not elaborate on that as it was a private chat.) I will say this about the man, he did a lot of good for the working class to get esoteric access even though he was far removed from them himself, he also was one of the first (not the first, being notorious has the effect of heightening ones profile) to openly talk about magic and theology other then in the Christian faith, and to spread knowledge of Yoga and Buddhist wisdom he also openly talked about sexuality and was openly promiscuous with both men and women. All good stuff I'm sure, especially at a time when you could be imprisoned for it, but, most of the good that came from it was inadvertent, he used his knowledge to make a few quid. I know there's lots of nonsense about him (sacrificing babies, pedophilic stuff etc, etc.) But there are also solid facts about him, many of which paint a truly vile picture of the man, the guy did anything for money so he could get high, he treated people terribly, and in many cases used them as nothing more then slave's, his entire religion was based on worshipping him, I mean... Really? I understand, there's a romantic version of Crowley which was born in the hippy period and really still persists to this day, that's cool, for me, I dislike the man and find many of his works daft for want of a better word, but will admit he was a very interesting character and inadvertent or not he has had a big influence on the esoteric world today, whether that's good or bad, well the proof is in the pudding.
I came from Mythvision and had to watch this one first! I was born into the open Brethren sect. When I was researching the Plymouth Brethren, trying to understand where my family’s beliefs came from, I was astounded that Crowley had been brought up Brethren as well. I was particularly intrigued by your comments on Crowley's influence; his prolific agency in new spiritual/religious movements, particularly in Western cultures. Many have argued that the United States, in particular, places tremendous value on the individual (at least, from a socioeconomic perspective). I am left to ponder whether this ethos has come to exert itself in the realms of personal, spiritual growth. Indeed, we live in a world of pluralities where many are fortunate enough to cultivate their own relationships and identities through rituals, doctrines, and traditions that suit their tastes. To that end, the "sacralization of the self," as posited by Heelas, rings somewhat unnervingly true; I am reminded of Durkheim's misgivings with the "cult of the individual" and anomie. Some prefer the community and firm foundations of organized religious institutions, while others might choose to pick up and practice admixtures of philosophies and theological proclivities; individual spirituality becomes an aggregate matrix of beliefs and lifestyles, though it may lack meaningful social solidarity. Granted, many who do have such communion (through larger institutions) might do this as well; religions are internally diverse, after all. But for some, this can prove quite isolating and even deleterious. Given Crowley's life history and literature, I wonder if Crowley felt this way himself.
Hello Angela Puca I want to say Happy Earth Day and Happy Beltane Day and Angela Puca I think you have the Intersting information about the Pagan and the Witchcraft and you are beautiful with this outfit 🙂
Great video! 😁 Fun fact: Here in Brazil, Aleister Crowley is quite famous. Mainly because of the famous singer Raul Seixas. He and Paulo Coelho (the writer of the best seller The Alchemist) wrote many songs accessible to the general public. Hippies, rockers, country folk and even pop audience likes Raul's music. Paulo Coelho's books are appreciated by different audiences as well. After seeing this video now I understand a little better how Occultism/Crowley works influenced them a little: "Open yourself to the universe"; "power of the mind"; "do what you wanna do"; "keep it simple" etc Thanks! ✌️
I don't agree with Thelema at all but i have a multitude of old and new limited copies of his publications. I've found that occultists , such as Poke Runyon and Lon Milo Duquette are more my style. Crowley is definitely worth looking into . He paved the way for people with a more wholesome approach.
Dr Puca, I think your lectures are wonderful. But do you think we could have one on Dion Fortune? She was a much better occultist and writer than Crowely. But she was a lady not boisterous or bombastic. Her Inner Light Society is still going in London. But it's not everybody's cup of tea due to the entry requirements. Eventhough they might have changed them by now. I would be very interested in a lecture on the Green Ray from Dion Fortune.
Soror Angela you scratched the surface on the Mega Therion but, you did this fairly well. I recommend outside of Crowley’s auto hagiography and others. I suggest Perdurabo & weiser concise guide to Aleister Crowley both by Dr. Richard Kaczynski. Do What Thou Wilt by Sutin is also fairly well written. Despite a mild recommendation to Eye in the Pyramid by Regardie I warn that there’s a negative bias towards Crowley.
I was initiated into OTO in 1983. The big thing I learned was to practice magic like yoga. To paraphrase Crowley, do the ritual until you are dreaming it.
I recommend John Symonds' biography on Crowley, "The Beast 666". It shows Crowley in a very personal, imperfect light with letters, diary entries, and newspaper articles. Very interesting.
@@daa5249 You do know you are repeating slander right? Are you aware of the details surrounding the accusations you have hurled or are you just repeating what you have heard others say? Practiced bestiality? What is your definition of bestiality please? And for that matter what is your definition of "practiced"? Please direct me to the places I can read about Crowley's practice of bestiality. The next one is even more childish. He is evil for writing of child sacrifices? He clearly stated that he was writing in code and not literally, so there goes that nonsense out the window. He explained that the real meaning was the Magician sacrificing his own sperm/blood for the cause of Love. Please show me that you know something of what you are talking about.
@@spowmocro8012 It is a long story but in short , Magick is doing one's True Will while respecting other's right to do their divinely granted True Will as well. By doing and promoting that, Crowley has helped change the world we live in today. For example the Beatles changed the world and they were influenced by Mr. Crowley.
There will never be a consensus about Crowley and his magick - he is way too difficult to understand in any simple sense. However, there is one point about which he was absolutely adamant - and that is the nature of Black Magick. When discussing the nature of magickal Wand, which represents the magickians Will, Crowley makes it clear that: ' . . . . . Any Will but that to give up the self to the Beloved is Black Magic'. Further, ' . . . the self surrendered must not be less than the All-Self.' (ref: Book 4 - part 2 - chapter VI) These statements are incredibly powerful and very revealing. What we see is that when talking about the ultimate aim of Thelema, it should be none other than subsuming the individual Self into the Absolute, or Beloved. This involves 'crossing the Abyss' a process in which the individual Self (or All-Self) is released and merges with the Divine. At this point, 'Do what thou Wilt', becomes synonymous with the expression from the Lord's Prayer, 'Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven'. To put it in simple terms, the aim of the student of Thelema is to become one with the Absolute by the merging of identities. Hence, when the 'realised' magickian acts, it is in accordance with the Way of Heaven and not with some petty desire that many believe to be the case. To clarify one other point, as Crowley stated, he was not a Satanist because he did not believe in Satan!
It seems normal for those that might have had a suppressed upbringing to discover and follow something that gives them agency, and to push the boundaries as self-expression _and_ development. Things taste great when you've been starved of them. The only thing that i would would consider bad about him is if he imposed on or suppressed others.
Angela, sorry if I am telling something you already know, but Lon Milo Duquette is a really huge authority in all things thelema, and he seems to be very approachable on his daily facebook classes. If you intend to make a series about thelema, he seems to be a great contribution. And great video!
Love him. Israel Regardie is good too. His secretary. Tree of life An Illustrated Study in Magic is one of my favorites. Chaos Qubalah Magic I do daily in my routine by default since I'm young 💯👍👑✌️☀️🌹🌈🙏🪔🧡🖤🧿🥂💦🇮🇱🎂😉❤️
He turned up uninvited to Gurdjieff’s place looking for a cure for his various addictions. He was hosted politely for a few days. When he was leaving G asked him if he had been a guest. “Of course” AC replied. “And now you are leaving, you are no longer a guest?” G asked. “Eh, yes” said AC. G replied: “So, now you are no longer a guest, leave and never return, you are filthy inside!”
Very good synopsis of a complex and fascinating figure! I look forward to what you will be doing on Crowley in the future, and hope that you might also feature Victor Neuberg in at least one future video as well, as I don't think he gets the credit that he deserves in most treatments of Crowley. Separate question: does the song you use at the end of your videos exist in a recording we can access? I know you are the one singing there (and presumably playing at least some of the instruments!), and would love to hear the whole thing sometime! ;)

Somehow I was a bit distracted but i enjoyed how you framed Crowley
That thumbnail is iconic!
I was initiated into OTO in 1983. The big thing I learned was to practice magic like yoga. To paraphrase Crowley, do the ritual until you are dreaming it.
Im a Christian but its looks more interesting in here considered me as one of your supporters
Huge influence in the music industry for some reason.
Well, it seems you have hit upon a topic of great interest! Well done.
Glad you think so!
Thank you for wonderful video Angela. Keep up the good work!
That's exactly what Crowley gave us , magick for all.
Brilliantly informative! 🌹
Glad you think so!
Hi Dr. Puca, Questions....so many questions... Now I am glad I'm a Patron, I will get my list ready for our next call. :) Always love our chats.

So do I!

Keep up the Great Work.

Beltane blessings.
Looking good Angela ❤️
I recommend John Symonds' biography on Crowley, "The Beast 666". It shows Crowley in a very personal, imperfect light with letters, diary entries, and newspaper articles. Very interesting.
Crowley is a major prophet who foresaw, and helped shape, the world we live in now and how it is progressing.
Mega Genius.
And pedo.
A guy that practiced bestiality and wrote of child sacrifices was a major prophet? What is wrong with you?
How is doing magic help to shape the world?
@@spowmocro8012 It is a long story but in short , Magick is doing one's True Will while respecting other's right to do their divinely granted True Will as well.
By doing and promoting that, Crowley has helped change the world we live in today.
For example the Beatles changed the world and they were influenced by Mr. Crowley.
Dr. Angela, can you please make a video about Quimbanda, Woodoo/Hoodoo and other African-American syncretic magic traditions?
I have one on Hoodoo
@@drangelapuca found it, and it's great!
Thank you!!!
Very interesting. I would love to see a followup video on Crowley's interpretation of Kabbalah.
Great video! "Teenage Crowley" should be a goth song title! 🎵
Oh fuu I positively adore your makeup.
I’d love to learn more about the Golden Dawn, and Rosicrucians.... shall you be covering them?
I've covered both
damn am from watching her in the demon collaboration video with Andrew the change in appearance is shocking
I admire your pentacle earrings. "Belli"
There will never be a consensus about Crowley and his magick - he is way too difficult to understand in any simple sense. However, there is one point about which he was absolutely adamant - and that is the nature of Black Magick. When discussing the nature of magickal Wand, which represents the magickians Will, Crowley makes it clear that:
' . . . . . Any Will but that to give up the self to the Beloved is Black Magic'.
Further, ' . . . the self surrendered must not be less than the All-Self.'
(ref: Book 4 - part 2 - chapter VI)
These statements are incredibly powerful and very revealing.
Thank you for doing a video on Aleister Crowley. You may encourage us to reseach all the volumes of The Eqinox.
Amazing!
It seems normal for those that might have had a suppressed upbringing to discover and follow something that gives them agency, and to push the boundaries as self-expression _and_ development. Things taste great when you've been starved of them.
The only thing that i would would consider bad about him is if he imposed on or suppressed others.
Angela, you look so beautiful in this video🥰. I love your videos content, Thx!
Thank you so much!!
Angela, sorry if I am telling something you already know, but Lon Milo Duquette is a really huge authority in all things thelema, and he seems to be very approachable on his daily facebook classes. If you intend to make a series about thelema, he seems to be a great contribution.
And great video!
For sure! I’m sure he’d love to contribute. I watch Lon almost daily
Pleeeeeeaaase do a vid series on the Kundalini, both Chinese and Indian approaches
Fuck yes, been waiting for this
This channel is lit!
G replied:
“So, now you are no longer a guest, leave and never return, you are filthy inside!”
I know you are the one singing there (and presumably playing at least some of the instruments!), and would love to hear the whole thing sometime! ;)
🎇👩🎓🧙♀️🧙♂️🤘👍 Nice video
Ever man and woman is a star - Alistair Crowley.
