No point in arguing that Yevgeny Kafelnikov was undoubtedly one of the most talented players of his era. 10 years in ATP top 10, 5 years in top 5, former world no.1, davis cup winner, , 2 grand slams on 2 different surfaces, 4 doubles grand slams, , Olympic gold medalist as well
@@shobhitk8992 Totally agree. Also, he played in the final of the ATP year end event, two US Open semifinals, and is the last man to have won both the men's singles and doubles titles at the same Grand Slam tournament (at the French Open 1996). He played doubles a lot. Many top players don't even play doubles anymore.
Still he was boring to watch.
Agassi was like flawless tennis player. Everyone loved him. I admired Kafelnikov's style so much at the time. His monster backhand is something to remember.
Jesus Christ Kafelnikov's backhand down the line was a sniper.
Andre won the last 4 grand slams of his life from ranking 146 to number 1 again because he has Steffi in his life! The feeling of being love with a person that he fells for really push him to succeed! Behind a successful man, there is GREAT woman not just a woman! Who could push him to be self motivated and determined to be back on the top! Steffi Graf! No doubt about it! They are a match that made from heaven!❤❤
If they married before 1995,then Agassi had more slams.
Pre Poly String dominating the market (not sure if they are suing them here due to post 97 guga).
20:02 "My name is Andre and I hate tennis".
according to this video Kafelnikov won almost every point and lost the match !!!!
had Agassi been 2 inches taller, he would've won 36 majors
Funny watching now how subdued Agassi was after winning, if you did not know better you would think he just won any match not a GS final.
23 years ago I set the alarm clock and watched this match live at arround 2am. I remember I was blown away by the shot making quality in the first set... this is undoubtedly one of the matches that pushed tennis to its modern standards.
What an incredible match!! Still amazing 20+ years later!
6:24 the manliest, dick-measuringest rally ever, between two dudes who had the best two-handed backhands in the world. of course agassi won XD
I think that Agassi was in his 30s and late in the career more successful than before because he was more disciplined
This match is a great example of why Agassi won so much. Kafelnikov got off to a hot start, but when you are playing against Agassi - especially in the heat - he can just wear you down throughout the match... In the last few games Kafelnikov looked exhausted and Andre looked like he could play another few hours if he had to. He really played so much differently in these best years of his career than when he was younger. His fitness and ability to grind took so much of the pressure of his game to outhit these younger players. He could take guy's legs away and make the match all about fitness. It worked so well for him!
I loved how during these years, the ESPN commentators compared Agassi to a body puncher in boxing. He would just grind guys down, especially in Australia

@pcgamerzzzchannel3407 Whatever you say bud.
Two of the best tempo baseline players ever. Look how early and hard they hit the ball.
Definitely, enjoy baseline tennis... glad how it shifted from serve n volley
Kafelnikov played amazing the firs set!!! He got tired it’s a shame because he was playing incredible but Agassi was in another level that day that’s why he was the “punisher” I wonder if they have played at night what the outcome could be
It wasn’t YK’s level of play: Agassi started slow because he went five sets with Sampras in the previous round.
@@rjamesyork no, Kafelnikov played a very high level the first set he got tired in the 3rd set . Agassi even said that he saw this and started to punish him more
Kafelnikov also played doubles in every tournament, he never complained on getting tired of matches
That down the line backhand from kafelnikov is like a hot knife cutting butter LOL
You don't see tennis like this no more. Superb play from both.
The problem for Kafelnikov wasn't his game, it was the fact that he played too many tournaments, and he paid for it in the end, he ended up retiring at 29. Should have won more slams but his full schedule hardly gave him respite before the slams.
Two of the best two-handed backhands on display.
One of the best played matches I ever seen in that time !
I’ve seen tennis in the 90’s and that 1st set was the best set of tennis I saw Kafelnikov play in his career. Mind you he won 2 Grand Slam titles.
Played a great 96 French Open too, which he won
Yes, but maybe the best set and match he ever played was in montreal SF 1999 against Agassi. In his book Agassi said that was the sickest display of tennis he ever face ever!!! An he olayed great matches against sampras, federer, becker, etc etc etc
Check Yevi at 1996 vs Sampras, Kafelnikov is such an example of overplaying and lack of knowledge. Magnus Norman clearly stated how wrong this generation was about training and the lack of rest.Todayy players work so much more on mobility and strength, in 1996 yevi was the perfect player, tall, strong, thin and mobile. He should have won so much more.
if would not play every ball all or nothing he would win much more
He had a great ‘96 French open and was a very good player, won a couple of slams, but he had some obstacles like, you know, Sampras, Agassi, Hewitt, Kuerten, Ferrero, Safin, Rafter, etc. They were good players too. Sampras and Agassi were just better than him, the others could beat anyone on their day.
Like many Russian players, his biggest struggles were mental. I agree he should have won more. Had he used his head more and competed stronger and smarter he would have won more.
Everybody got same conditions in 96.
Yevgeny had to compete with peak agassi sampras etc...he actually played too much IMHO.. should have paced himself.
Thanks for the video. I was a teen in the mid 90's to early 2000's and have fond memories of tennis from that time. Two of my favourites from the era right here.
Strangely Yevgeny Kafelnikov never utilised his height to his advantage while serving. He need to jump a big more n it could have been a big serve as his weapon. Sad otherwise Kafelnikov+ big serve= invincible
Wow! I don't think I have ever seen the ball hit harder! It was almost insane how fast the ball was going back and forth.
Agreed. Two really hard hitters. The ball was being belted around the court so fast.
Yeah, it has not been many matches where two players have hit harder, but some of the matches between Agassi & Federer come close, at least forehand to forehand 😊@amanzaidi6102
Nice quality and nice highlights, thank you
I remember watching this match and thinking Agassi would probably lose after the first 20 minutes. But, he turned it around.
hard for a big guy (kafelnikov is 6'3") to run around against andre in a best of 5
@@minh1197 Kafel just played all or nothing every ball.and if you play like this you make to many misses
Agassi talked about this match in his book. He said Kafelnikov was on fire the first set!
@@minh1197 Let’s not forget that Agassi was in his 30s here, Kafelnikov 20s. Also we’re seeing these days with Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Reilly Opelka, John Isner, that a big guy can go 5 sets. Isner played and won the longest match ever played, and he’s 6’10’’!
@@posttenebras2812 He played over two days on Wimbledon and it was mostly a serve game, it's not comparable at all.
Ball striking just doesn't get better between two players
3:52 umm what!?! just sensational/incredible from both overall!
Where was Pete?
Let me guess; the most poorly conditioned Champion of the last 50yrs got beat because Australia is hot and he gets tired, yes?
6:20 Is this ping pong?? 😳😳 you don't even see such pace nowadays, what the hell
Agassi was out of this world
Kafelnikov played excellent tennis hit many aces and had more winners but Agassi was excellent+ exceptional 👍. Great tennis
A VHS tape recording of this match was the main thing that improved my tennis as a beginner. With no internet access and no coaches, this was the first and only tennis video I had access to for years. So I rewatched it countless times. After only one year, I was beating guys who'd played 10+ years. Memories!
Excellent quality video bro
Gorgeous frame rate!
Omg kafelnkov at her best was a beast
*his lol
Yonas Campbell can be fail im argentino 😂
but looser
What racket is Kafelinikov using? What brand?
Fischer
ancient medvedev
Camera always pans back to Agassi even after Kafelnikov hits winner?
YK was on 🔥 in this match! He hit twice as many winners as AA. HOW did Agassi manage to win this match???
I've watched this game... I remember being astounished by the speed of their strokes, it was amazing... seeing this now is a testimony of what level the big three brought tennis to... Absolutely insane
First man to make four Grand Slam finals in a row since Rod Laver: Agassi 1999-2000. Astonishing feat.
no. the grand slam is WITHIN the season. 4 in a row : aus, french open, US open and wimbledon. not in a 2 years season.
@@guimov1984 doesn't change the fact that he made four grand slam finals in a row, a first since 1969.
Thats amazing, even more amazing that Nadal and Djokovic then did that simultaneously between 2011 Wimbledon and 2012 FO
What a match ❤❤❤
Agassi the best ever❤❤
Such clean striking of the ball in this match, against has to be one of the best ball strikers off all wings in the history of the game.
06:15 🤩
I watched this match on tv in 2000. That point broke YK’s will.
Man, these two were SO fun to watch.
So incredible!!
Increíble
I miss the green courts.
Post Sampras and Agassi , he was world No.3 of that era. Kuerten and Rafter are my favourites too, but they were clay court specialist and Hard court specialists. Only Hewitt managed to win 2 grand slams in 2 different surfaces apart from Kafelnikov.
Watching this back now, I am surprised how good YK was at times. Both Kafelnikov and Davydenko were great at times but could equally lose to a weak opposition when they had a bad day.
Looking at these highlights you’d think Kafelnikov won comfortably. Nothing like the real match.
Great match from Agassi!
Bravo Andre!!!
Power wow
06:16 ¿table tennis? Jeje
Highlights or Kafelnokof winners?
He lost
Most of points of Kafelnikov in this video
I saw this game also live on TV.. what a game.. Kafelnikov got tired, he was outstanding in the fist set.. later on Agassi took the game to his hand and played very very good… was nice to see it back after 24 years…
Andre Agassi is American Hero
Kafelnikov could have won more AO if not for Agassi 95,2000
no.he had weak mentality.in 95 and in 2000 he would lose to Sampras. He had luck to win 2 GSs.
@@thebigmonstaandy6644 and Olympic gold in epic 5-setter final against Haas
@@thebigmonstaandy6644 you are saying a profesional tennis player who was former number 1, olímpic champion, Davis cup champion, 4 GS in doubles, 9 years a top ten , etc was lucky to win 2 GS? Jajaj OMG 😆 in professional tennis there is no luck is all about hard work, dedication, mentallity, etc you are just jealous about the guy or something
@@edwinivanrodriguez3769 it is luck,if you win 2 Grand Slams and play only 1 Time vs Top10 player, that makes his wins less impressiv.this is only what i sayed. For Example Tsonga had to play vs Federer ,Nadal,Djokovic in raw to win a Grand Sland.
@@edwinivanrodriguez3769 Strong mentality ? he lost 10 game in row and everybody in Russia(my country) knows ,how much vodka he drank, before his matches.he is very talented, that why he was able to reach so much
Kafelnikov thought he would beat Agassi just by being taller and stronger. But his drives are so predictable, it's a joke
Yes, but you can totally see when he's going to do it....
If that was correct why was he hitting them past Agassi all match? Agassi was famous for having some of the fastest reflexes, feet and hands ever seen on the tour. Kafelnikov had great disguise, especially on his forehand. Terrific player on his day. Agassi was just better.
Taller, but not stronger. AA could bench-press two of Kafelnikov.
Rafter won 2 USO, and wasn't a big performer on any other surface. He played extremely well on grass too, but ran into Sampras and others. Kuerten never proceeded beyond the QF of any tournament except French open.
What Nadal Federer & Dojkovic have achieved would never be achieved again. They have clearly broken the myth that players can't win Grand Slam after 30.
Yeah, so what 😊
@@darrylperry648 bro you just try to climb 50 floor steps everyday and I would also say so what
@@anandparmeswaran6681 I guess you were not aware that Agassi won some Grand Slams after 30 😁, right, so just in case you didn't, it didn't start with those other 3, and that is a fact jack, so Agassi broke that myth long before they did, so why don't you revisit the history of tennis, so you will know more about issues that you speak own
@@darrylperry648 don't speak with half baked knowledge, Agassi had dropped out of Ranking and reached as low as 140 in the age of 20's this has not been done by Federer, Nadal and Dojkovic, Agassi skipped many tournaments before the age of 30's for personal reasons which you look Federer , Nadal, and Dojkovic never did that is an added advantage for Agassi, I am not saying that Agassi is not a great player but if you consider the calibre of Federer, Nadal and Dojkovic they took the game to another level
@@darrylperry648 bro you would never get to see this kind of Rivalry again in Tennis History
Two legends
Agassi is the reason I love Tennis
Lol I thought Tennis will become more faster and powerful?
It’s 2022 and more modest 🤷♂️
