I smiled through this whole video. Nunos energy just is so infectious.
Same!
yeah..ear to ear. awesome stuff.
Hope he washed his hands at least
Coke ?
Yeah, I think it's because we genuinely love him.
I love how guys like Nuno and Paul Gilbert get so legitimately excited talking about guitar and music...even after doing it for all these years.
Randomly walking through Sydney city today and ran into Nuno in a hotel. Went in and asked if I could say hello. Got a photo and he wished me luck in my new career, what a guy! Met him a few times and the first in 93. Massive respect to a very humble guy!!
What a great interview‼️ You know Rick, what he says about « a good producer sometime just get out of the way and let it be », well you just did the very same thing being a good interviewer, just let the light on the guest, get out of the way and … let it be. Another great interview. Thank you.
Great point!
I love Nuno's no-filter approach...Brilliant!!!!!
Wow Rick what a great interview. 🎸🎸
Such a great human being, love this guy. I always have reaper open when i'm jamming because something will catch and you got to get it. It's so much easier now. My phone have scraps that i've had to get down on my way to work, just trying to twang out the guitar parts with my voice. When that inspiration hits, you gotta go with it or it's gone. Not just with music, life is like that too, in most things. Great interview, he has such great energy.
Nuno Bettencourt is a national treasure and my eyes can't process what his fingers are doing. 🔥
Nuno is a national treasure indeed... a Portuguese treasure from the Azores to the world.
Nuno is so genuine. I dig it! That’s the way to be. ✨
Such a brilliant song.
he's a machine. He simply don't miss a note ever.
What a treat seeing such talented people being open and informative, thank you
What a ball of energy nuno is .loved it
12:36 33 years after, i still LOVE listening Nuno playing a guitar
This is SO true. Whenever my band is playing we almost always like our iphone recordings of practice, as opposed to going in to a studio, headphones on, separate rooms etc.
It's wild how so many artists say the same thing about that creative moment of zen.. Things just flow as though from an outside source. I've experienced this myself and with band mates. It's one of the most rewarding things I've ever felt in my life.
This is amazing insight into the genius of recording ideas asap on the small recorders, back in the day! I can play this song still.
I sat on the toilet the whole day but didn't get any ideas for songs.
Their performance at Freddy Mercury benefit concert was AMAZING ! Probably was the best of the whole event.
Saw Extreme and Living Colour 4 days ago.
This guy is a monster. Mind blowing.
What a monster player , what a humble human, what a great guy!
Exactly! While inspiration strikes!
Theres a reason that tape is brown 😂
Nuno playing on the toilet certainly added that extra chorus and reverb to the recording 10/10 😎
Nuno’s interviews are almost as good as his playing. He is funny but most of all totally loves the music.
One of the most underrated guitar player ever. He’s amazing!
Amazing interview, words of wisdom and musicians!
We love you much!
Greetings from Bulgaria from one of your huge fans there! :-)
Be healthy, happy and blessed!
A 12 string resonating off ceramic tiles would be quite something. Hole Hearted is such a great song, music, lyrics, performance. All their lyrics are clever.
Leo Kottke often remarked how intractable a 12 string was. Nuno shows no signs of its intractability. He's amazing playing that beast!
Why would he remark that if he then proceeded to jump up and down on one every night? (using his hands of course)
That 12 string sounds amazing!
'Taylor'. Guaranteed glitter!
@@JT-si6bl not wrong sir
I know that these guitars are not traditionally constructed like the Big Two, but wow, the intonation is precision. Until he knocked a string flat!
I'm in the market for a flat top or two. A 12 fret parlour guitar would be super cool. MacKenzie & Marr make a 14.
what a wonderful interview. Thank you!
Good to hear this. I never get the same feeling when I record the second time to get it perfected
I saw a RUclips that Leon Russel did, where he's talking about a time when he had George Harrison playing on on of his tracks and George was doing about 27 takes on the one track. In the end, according to Leon, he got over it and said to George, what do you think of this take and George said that one's great, which take was that and Leon said, that was the first take. :)
Great interview
I relate to this so much. Can’t remember the last time I did a demo, I just feel like it takes the fun out of the process and my main motivation for making music is enjoyment.
I think that’s why some music doesn’t hit the same way nowadays, because it’s refined to within an inch of its life and sounds more like a product than a piece of art.
Nuno is always a delight and so alive for music.
What a man 😂we love you Nuno!
This guy is the book of right on.
Rick, please, make a video about equipment you using in new clips like this one. What type of camera, light ... everything and make it beginners can understand. Your new video production is one of the best on YT. Thanks
You're a good listener Rick. Your interviewees are comfortable with you and you pull the best out of them.
Best Interview !!!! So true about Demo's you loose the MAGIC when you do it again!
lose
Nuno would be fun to play with, he's got that little kid vibe that would make it even more fun.
“It’s a monster” one of my fave Nuno guitar songs!🤘
When he shit that log and looked at it he called it a monster
This was very cool. Thanks Rick and Nuno. Just a damn good interview.
This is just amazing. Love it so much
The solo in get the funk.out still one of my top 10 favorites
Nuno's passion is infectious.
Great story about the 12 string and the recording of the song. It goes to show you you don't need the best gear you need the best song you can do and the best performance you can muster.
I'd love to hear how The Clash made London Calling, that record is amazing. Hint hint Rick!
Think its true?
Nunos the best..... what a guy " The First thing you play, and you are creating.... Don't Stop". Wooooo Thank you Rick😍
Love passionate musicians like Nuno ❤
Yep, a new instrument or even a pedal can help guide your muse into new directions, new stuff you don’t expect, you always gotta be excited for and open to checking out new channels for your playing 😎
Not a fan of the band, but I like Nuno. Saw him solo for "Mourning Widows" - dude put his heart and soul into the performance. Just a great dude and killer musician.
The new Extreme album has been on my desk for weeks. Time to listen!
This is so great. I love when people tell the truth and appreciate teamwork.
Really enjoyed this!
Yeah! I think its quite clear Nuno improvises Albums, no question. If existing chunks reappear from his mind during his playing, there should be no problem. you´ll find these lydian E/D Business and modal pedal point in the song writing tool kit from ABBA and JS Bach to Zappa, so c´mon. It´s a harmonic tool. Great to see Nuno talking about the process as I was blown away with Extreme I. THX to you both!! I like the statement on capturing the initial emotion above perfect recording technique and the discussion on a producer´s role.
I have listened to Hole Hearted so many times and never clicked on the Supertramp similarity until just now! Mind blown! And I am a Supertramp fan too! Wow!
Great f'n interview. What a gem the interview is as well as you both, for the music/guitar community. I could listen to you guys nonstop... discussing, geeking out & reminiscing
Wow! Such brutal Honesty- Gotta love that independent Spirit!
Alternate title for Hole Hearted should be "Give a Little Shit"
I really like Hole Hearted; those lyrics; so scathing about ones' self market value. I'm a loser, baby, I kind of figured I wouldn't be getting you.
Wow, he is so awesome! Great interview, thanks!
rick he is A MAZE THING ,,, a brilliant guy ever since i tool time to listen to him ,,he plays with love,,,, an obviously with good shit 2 ,one love
i can totally relate... sometimes i can never get the mojo of a demo...
Hehehe...OMG...LOVE HIM...what honesty!!!! 💗💗💗
Wow. So many insightful observations.
I had a shirt like that in the 70s.
What an amazing human being!
God, it makes me feel so much better to hear a legend like Nuno put into words something that I've sort of always done and thought. There's been so many times when I recorded a demo, re-recorded the "final" song, and ended up going back to keep parts from the demo. Sometimes you just nail a part when you're not even trying. I find that a lot of the times, the more you "try", the more stiff it ends up feeling. it's really hard to explain, but musicians know exactly what I'm talking about. You can hear/feel the vibe somehow when you go back and re-listen. The strangest thing but these little things are what I love about making music. Rock on🤘🏽
"You're not going to tell me you used Gary's vocals from the demo!?"
"I might have!"
00:36 NEVER liked Nuno... until now lol! That was the most "human" thing I've heard in ages. Playing guitar while takin a shit. This may have just changed my entire world lol!!
Why, may I ask, would you not like Nuno? I'm asking because he is such an intricate guitar player. It's a Boston Band, and it's not my bag, but some of it is very good.
Yup… agreed… better than playing stupid video games while taking a sh!t I must say… LOL
@ricktheexplorer Extreme, Get the Funk Out was an abomination. Never cared for "hair metal". As a result, I didn't like his songwriting. But he's definitely a talented guitarist.
@@AbbyPhelan Correctomundo!
ive been playing guitar since i was 7, by 11 I was in a kid cover band, by 14 I didnt care anymore.. and stopped playing.. until I heard Pornograffiti. Then it became an obession. Then I learned Nuno is my age, and portuguese like me. Been my guitar hero ever since!! Theres no one quite like Nuno on a guitar.
Magnifico.🩷👄🌡️🌹💋💕
Hey Rick - Just realised we are birthday buddies! (April 24th)Fancy nipping over to Scotland to produce our next E.P.? :) great video as always with Nuno...what he says is sooo true and sadly getting lost in the modern era. Fantastic inside info though. keep em coming!
Saw him live 2 nights ago, he is brilliant!
Superb! Who are Rick's *top three artists he'd still love to interview* for the channel??
I love Nuno getting inspired by Supertramp (and of course Zeppelin)
3 of my all time favorite bands here ❤️
This man is so charming
Great interview! Thanks so much. 😎🤓
It’s cool you mention the toilet @Nuno. Ever since i was a kid i took refuge into the bathroom and brought my guitar. A habit that followed me to this day, my wife dosn’t understand it 😆
A really exceptional human, great interview!
1992, Extreme at Wembley Arena, my first ever concert at 10 years old
8:47 It's funny how he goes on so much about how the first take is the best then he plays the riff he was talking about and it sounds EXACTLY like the record haha, totally capturing the original vibe.
This guy is freekin awesome, a way different cat than I thought he was, fantastic stuff Nuno love it........
What a 12 strings live sound ! Nuno is a so funny guitar god !
Greetings from France from one of your huge fans there! :-)
Thanks a lot Rick for this interview !
Please please please interview Chris Buck! Also Julian Lage! My 2 favorite guitarists of the 21st century. Also, please interview Steve Morse!
I'm pretty sure he interviewed Julian Lage.
Also, he recently interviewed Steve Morse. Look under his interviews.
@@DanalynTuthill-yl4hd you're right, he DID interview Julian Lage!
👍🏻
Did you also find Rick's interview with Steve Morse? He did that in the last month or so.
Yes, AWESOME interview with the great Steve Morse!
Classic!!!!!!!! 💚💚💚
Le Portugal doit faire l'hommage à ce trésor !!! Ripa-lhe a mil Bettencourt!
All songs come from previous ones except with different ideas and directions. Ed Sheeran proved it during his court appearance. I wanna hold your hand and Jessie’s girl use pretty much the same structure but it is filtered through the artist and then they appeal to artistic license. I love Nuno’s transparency ( maybe too much potty mouth; pun intended…) but he speaks the truth
Ya, I think he kind of got away with murder on that one. I'd love to know how that happened.
amazing energy and talent.
What a completely inspiring dude
I know I’ve watch the whole interview on the main channel…But this really is a great insight of creating music…
Now, I have to go to the toilet and make songs…Haha
But also interesting he said about the first riff you play when you hold the guitar…Will try that as well…Thanks…
Amazing interview Rick, bloody funny as well....
Nuno Bettencourt is from the Azores Islands, a source of pride for the Azoreans.
Go Nuno, never forget our islands, the most beautiful in the world!
I am from São Miguel island and you are from Terceira.
Nuno and Rick. How does it get better?
Eddie Van Halen probably did on Two And A Half Men.
How much "fuck*ing" can be in one sentence ... Nuno: "hold my beer"
I grinned through the whole thing, stayed up till 2 am cause I couldn't put it down, tomorrow morning is going to be a bitch, but worth it all the way.
Best interview yet!
"Hole Hearted": Toilet song in my mind from now on.
Thanks, Nuno.
I just love Nuno ..he gets it !
Damn I wish I still had that energy. Nuno I don't think realize that since eds gone he wears the crown. Dude is sick. When extreme blew up in the 90s I listened to nuno kill a solo on one of my guitar videos and I thought oh shit this cat is way better than them couple slow songs they was known for. He can actually straight kill it. So underrated. If he'd been a replacement for a major band everyone would be bowing down. I just don't know how they ain't as big as van Halen or any band. I mean if poison can be that huge then extreme should been bigger.
I'm watching this on the toilet. That's impressive, right?
Me too 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Haha so am I
Nuno is a very interesting person hehe. His mannerisms are a wild scene man!
That guitar sounds so good!
