As a 43 year old who started watching football after moving from the US the Netherlands at age 9 in 1991, I have to say that the 90s and early 2000s was indeed the absolute greatest era in football history. Look at the list of players God created who played in this era: Ronaldinho, Zidane, Kaka, Kahn, Diego Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario (nr. 9), Ryan Giggs, Cafu, Klinsmann, Schmeichel, Beckham, Raul, Del Piero, Desailly, Roberto Carlos, Batistuta, Cantona, Romario, Figo, Dennis Bergkamp, Marco van Basten, Seedorf, Rivaldo, Maldini, Peter Cech, Van der Sar, Zanetti, Buffon, Xabi Alonso, Cannavaro, Nistelrooy, Viera, Nedved, Drogba, Puyol, Pirlo, Casillas, Nesta, Scholes, Torres, Terry, Lampard, Eto'o, Gerrard, Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, Kaka, Van Persie, Gullit, Rijkaard....and many many more. Setting up a team with these players, you could dismantle the entire history of football.
The downsides of social media and var have more to do with the quality of players and referees than with the fans or the rules imo. I don’t think social media and var make the game worse or less exciting. But it definitely changed football and added new dimensions to the sport as you say. Everything else apart from the first parts of the video, I think are spot on. The quality and passion of today’s players, for whatever reason, are not worth the upward valuations of the transfer market. Players of high quality with character and grit have disappeared immensely. Even at the top of the game. It’s crazy that players like ronaldo, ibra, and messi, could still outsmart and outplay youngsters as consistently as they’ve done. New generations have been scouted and prepared terribly. There was so much to look forward to in yesterdays players and much less nowadays. New players have improved physically but lost a lot of mentality. I blame more the scouts, the coaches, the federations, and culture than the players themselves but the decline in intelligent team based decision making has been so apparent. I miss players and fans who cared about the team instead of stats and recruitment optics.
The problem is when players started to play for money and not for the "city" club they represent! Same thing in the NBA. Jordan in Bulls all career, Bird in Celtics, is the same with the likes of Baresi in Milan, Maradona in Naples, Mathaus in Bayern, etc etc..
You make some great points but also some historical revisionism. For example, it is wrong to say players didn't have to deal with angry fans and media. Sure social media wasn't a thing but television reached most people and angry fans would insult players to their faces. It's also not true that players didnt care how many goals or assists they had and that they just wanted to win. In every single era, there are certain players who care more about their stats than wins. Now maybe the extent of how many players are like that has changed, but with the way you phrase it, it's as if all players during that era didn't care about their stats
This is why the MLS is becoming so attractive. DP/salary cap rule allows very good strikers to play against subpar defensive players. It makes for a entertaining game with many fast counter attacks. Playing from the backline doesn't work in the MLS, your advantage is pushing vertical. 10 million dollar offensive player vs 80k defensive player. If you don't believe me, please watch the LAFC vs Galaxy game. Fun Fun Fun Fun..aka "El Traffico"...look at the Inter Miami salary roster, it will shock you. Keep in mind most MLS teams are structured like this. All the money is spent on the front line, leaving only 60k - 100k to make up the back line. No joke here.
Agreed that 90-05 was the best era for football. It was a more skilled and physical sport. Nowadays they start rolling around on the field after the tinniest contact. So boring.
I feel like football is way more marketable now than it was in the 90s-00s. I can't really make a good take because that wasn't my era that I grew up on, but even with the last two world cups, Russia and Qatar were chosen because of the money being offered for accepting their bids. There is too much money involved now for players to be able to express themselves, as the team winning and making money comes before a player showing their personality in how they play. Take this with a grain of salt considering I'm a pretty casual fan lol but that's my take.
It was absolutely stacked of absolutely incredible and amazingly talented players back then. I was lucky enough to have grown up in this era of football. Yes, Messi and CR7 are arguably the two greats. But then. It was like every team had a outstanding player. Serie A was the best league. That league was ridiculous. It had all the greats at the same time.
Is this video is narrated by someone unfamiliar with football.? "Window transfer"? Says 90's were the best but proceeds to show images from the 80s 🤦 And what was the pronunciation of some of those player names 🤣
Get rid of the stupid var I can't stand why so many goals has to stop for checking if the goal was legit or not, I really miss football from the 90s and early 00s, woth the XL tucked kits and wide and short shorts.
I say this to everyone, VAR ruined football for me, imagine you cannot celebrate because there is the small chance var comes up and its offside by a knee, ridiculous
i think a lot of sports best eras happened to be in the nineties/early 2000s, football, nba, snooker(sttill the 90s players dominating today), tennis.. and probably many sports i cant think to mention or just didnt watch at that time
Only to lose to France with an Old Zidane. As Cruyff rightly said, Choose the best player for every position, and you'll end up not with a strong XI, but with 11 strong 1's.
I just watched my team become the continent champion and I hated watching them play because of the so called "tactics". There was no pleasure on watching a match so what's the point? Football and every sport (I believe) is plastic, It envolves beauty along with grit and technique. When you remove the show and focus only on the tactics as a way to win, you kill what's most valuable about it. Although I don't think it's going back to what it once was. Unfortunately.
Without a doubt 1990 - 2005 was the golden age for the sport
Facts but I’ll add the 10s Barca and Madrid teams and that’s about it
86-07.
Lol Bayern all day all night@@niksterfer6sir

90 _ 2006

The early and mid 2000s had sooo many amazing players and teams . Such a marvelous time
Football peaked in the 00s the perfect balance of skill and publicity

The 80's too guys, the 80's with Platini, Maradona, Zico, Falcao, Gullit Van Basten Baresi Scirea, Butragueno, etc...even the 80's
The problem is when players started to play for money and not for the "city" club they represent!
Same thing in the NBA.
Jordan in Bulls all career, Bird in Celtics, is the same with the likes of Baresi in Milan, Maradona in Naples, Mathaus in Bayern, etc etc..
I’m so blessed to be born in 92.
So i could experience late 90s and early 2000s legendary era
I recall the UCL 2002/03 and france '98. Players and the quality was top notch in both editions
95/96 to 02/03 my personal favourite era

The Ronaldo Manchester United vs Messi barcelona was the best era of football and sports with no doubt
Didn't they play like just once?
Im religiously followed football news back in that day, spare my money to buy soccer news tabloid.that was just awesome time to live

Ronaldo nazario, Ronaldinho, and Zidane are my 3 favorite players ever. So My Favorite era is from 1996-2006.
Amazing era. As a Brazilian, it was sad to lose to France 2 times on World Cup, but it was well done. Zidane was lethal.
Football was always entertaining untill 2010s'
Agreed that 90-05 was the best era for football. It was a more skilled and physical sport. Nowadays they start rolling around on the field after the tinniest contact. So boring.
I don't think VAR or social media are the issue. The quality of the players has gotten much worse.

amazing that theres more wrong decisions since the inception of var

@@robertbb87 also claiming 90s-00s players weren't about the money, lol he is not speaking as someone who was "there".

Boxing and Formula 1 same, the best era of 90s-00s
Same for cricket
Ice Hockey too
Professional wrestling as well. Nothing in the world can compare to mid 90's-mid 00's.
Imagine a time where we have OP players like Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano, Kaká and Roberto Carlos in one single team!

@@thewolverine7516 You're right, but Zidane was also at the highest level even old. And France had a great team too.
90s plyer favourite
Ronaldo
Zidane
Ronaldinho
David beckham
wtf are these pronounciations
I know, right? There is no way he isn't trolling!
The flopping made me hate the sport I grew up loving
modern football is shite. mid 90s to early 2000s was the greatest era of football that saw the greatest and most diverse types of players ever
