About us
Two American boys following a dream to purchase and restore a Historic Monument in the south of France. Welcome to Château Avensac!
Our Channel, At the Chateau, focuses on the restoration and celebration of this listed French castle designed in the late 18th century, and built in the beginning of the 19th century, on the ruins of the original 14th century Château.
In 2015 we began an adventure to own a French Chateau. It has been a long journey, and in September of 2021 we became the protectors of this incredible property that we now call home. I keep an ongoing record of the long road to Château ownership, and you can visit our website by clicking on this link... www.atthechate... - If you would like to receive my newsletter that announces new posts, please visit the website and subscribe.

We would like to thank all of our Patrons who are helping to restore this historic monument, their contributions are invaluable to our efforts. If you would like to become a patron of Château Avensac, follow this link, / chateauavensac
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the floor plan illustrations provided as each room is described. So helpful in being able to understand your plans (which are FANTASTIC by the way) can’t wait to see your progress ❤
Vic, we put in the floor plans as we love it when others do the same. Thank you for your kind words, watching, and commenting!
I love it to, let’s one visualize the chateau! I feel like I’m right there!
Love the church bells in the background. Adds class. Nothing wrong with them.
Sherry, they do indeed! and they are so authentic! I just like t joke about them. Thank you for watching and commenting!
The scullery maid was terrific!
Miss Catalina, Thank you ! That was a lot of fun to do. :)
JUDY'S THE BEST ! ! ! : )
Phyllis, Judy appreciates this more thank you know! Merci!!
Philip is adorable and Mark’s sense of humor makes it (the video) all so much fun 😀
Magpie, Thank you. I wanted to find a way to set us apart from the rest, so humor was the answer. I am glad you enjoy it. ❤️ Mark
Medium-rare guests are delish!
😂
😂
Eillen, ha ha ha haaaaa, Thank you for the comment!!!
Cyd here. The illustrations were so helpful. Mark, a man of many talents 🙂
Cyd, Thank you sir! 😄
JUDY is back!!!!❤️❤️❤️😂😘😘
And next time she gets her own musical jingle!! LOL
@@atthechateau 😂😂😂❤️👍
Mark your sarcastic humour cracks me up every time!! Wow Phillip, those cabinets are just gorgeous! Imagine having something like that to be able to move around. I think you are so lucky to have all those rooms, and why not make the absolute most of them. The "kitchens" are going to be totes fabulous when finished, can not wait to see. I am so jealous of your laundry room, I have a fold away laundry in a cupboard (seemed like a great idea at the time) but space is everything I have decided in a laundry. And drool drool drool a La Cornue stove......I think I would be too scared to actually cook on it.
Angela, I am so happy I can make you laugh! We really appreciate your kind words, and trust me, when the La Cornue gets installed, I am going to circle around and around, afraid to touch it myself! LOL. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I love this castle. It's an apple in my eyes.
林孟潔, Thank you , you are very kind. Thank you for watching!
Love this episode!! Judy has had a few glasses of Rose as the new scullery maid...you go judy!!
Michael, ha ha ha, Judy sends her love!... Thank you for watching and commenting!
Phillip and Mark, make sure the Chefs Table is high enough. You can sprain your back if it’s to low. Yes, it did happen, extremely painful, trip to ER andddddddd CXL of dinner party, five days flats on my back, “on drugs” 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
It’s amazing what a couple more inches can do!!
Hi Suzy! Nice to meet you! I’m so envious, as I know you are in a house FULL of laughter!
Sushi, We will make sure! and thank you!!

Chris, you are so sweet! Thank you for watching and commenting!
You have so much space, goodness I won't envy you the cleaning of it. But it will be magnificent when you accomplish what you have planned.
Shirley, that is what house keepers are for! LOL we just have to figure out how to pay them, Ha ha ha ha haaaa. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Raxx, Thank you ! and I am glad you did not say "Mark's snarky comments" as so many are want to do 😆😆
Love that you are keeping the old limestone/granite sink. I just found your channel and am binge watching.
Marla, welcome to our crazy family and we are glad you are with us. We thank you!!!
Judy, Judy, Judy...!
Susanne, Your three Judys... Just wait, Judy is getting a musical jingle that is literally - Judy, Judy, Judy! Ha ha ha ha! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Mark, I love your side comments. Too funny.
Susanne, thank you!!!
Love the hilarity in your videos ….🤣🤣🤣 !! Don’t stop… it’s so refreshing 🥰
These kitchens are amazing… love that y’all show the plans … helps to visualize 😊
The huge cabinets are WOW!! Definitely will need rolling ladders !
😊❤
Marsha, I just spotted multiple comments from you and I am making an assumption that you are new to our channel, so if I am indeed correct... welcome to our crazy family!!! The only way we are going to make it through this is with humor! Well, perhaps lots of help, but definitely humor! Well maybe more money as well, but definitely humor! Well, maybe lot's and lots of time, but definitely humor! LOL ...Thank you watching and commenting!
Love the plan....the flash Gordon sequence was fabulous....🤣🤣🤣🤣I am open for dinner invitation...love Judy but your fired😁😁😁
Alexa, Thank you for picking up on my Flash Gordon concept! I wanted to do the fancy film effect as well, but found that it was above my pay grade! Lol
Thank you for watching and commenting!
PS.. fear not, Judy was fired! We are now eating off of paper plates!
Loving everything…including the bells!! 💛🔔😊🔔💛
Peg, fear not, I do love the bells as well, but they do have a penchant for going off at just the wrong, or perhaps the right moment. 🤣
Thank you for watching and commenting!!
I would picture the servants out in the side yard hanging out the wash. Did y'all know that only 50% of homes in France have tumble dryers? Could you live without one? I don't think I could but I do love my sheets hung outside to dry. Unfortunately, my side yard is where the dog poops so that's not gonna work.
Really enjoying your channel. Living vicariously...
Hi again Barbara, I have to say that the lack of dryers here in France is enough to drive and American crazy! the damage that the calcium in the water does to clothing, sheets, and towels is hard to imagine. We bought two dryers in france, but they are very different than those is the States, and although they do a fairly good job, it takes hours and hours. At some point I am going to have to have a commercial dryer brought over from the states so that we can at least have soft towels, as opposed to the sheets of sandpaper that most of the French use to dry themselves off with... LOL
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Love the behind the scenes commentary!! Hanging dried flowers would be lovely instead of dead animals :)
Danielle, I think flowers would be much better myself!! thank you for watching and commenting!
I have renovated 12 houses, fishermans and miners cottages to a grand house on a canal. I am so glad you are keeping all the old fittings, cupboards etc. There are only 2 of us and we still go through a dishwasher a day. I suggest you have one under your main kitchen sink so you can put cutlery and every day crockery straight into cupboard or draws within feet of you.
Lorraine, OMG 12 !?! This is only our 4th. I am exhausted just reading your comment! Lol
The issue with using antique furniture as cabinetry is trying to integrate modern technology into them. The 2 dishwashers in the scullery are just a few steps away, and truthfully the sink in the big kitchen is meant for food prep only. We will see how it all works as we move forward, and if we have a big regret I will remember your words! Lol
Thank you for watching and commenting!!
Wow, wow, 👌 wow
Cynthia, again, thank you!
I would recommend to make room in the laundry for a rotary iron with steam press (if it’s good enough for Martha it is surely good enough for Judy!). Or at the very least a dedicated ironing and steaming area (again for our girl Judy!)
Yes, for all the tablecloths and linen.
Patricia, ha ha ha, we are way ahead of you, we own a Meile mangle steam press! I told Judy she had to move to laundry duty after breaking so many plate, and she scowled at me... You just can't get good help these days!! LOL. Thank you for watching and commenting!
So much fun to see it all. Thank you!
Sarah, Thank you for watching and commenting!!
Susie, I love your slowness as we get a nice long look at the rooms and walls.
Ruth, I will indeed pass along the compliment to Susie.
Fascinating and fabulous.
Susan, Thank you and thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you very much.
Richard, Thank you for watching and commenting!
Absolutely beautiful chateau….can not wait for more vlogs.

Your plans sound wonderful. Can't wait to see them completed.
Cynthia, thank you! and you will have to come visit in the future!!! Also, thank you for watching and commenting!
Really enjoyed your video. I appreciated the use of the architecal drawings to illustrate the layout. I also think the filming and editing to show examples of what is being talked about is excellent. ( the whole "a picture is worth a thousand words" thing). The text comments are spot-on and help elevate the entertainment value.
Victoria, Thank you so much for your kind words!! Creating these videos takes so much time and effort, and it usually goes unnoticed! We really appreciate your comment.
Judy!!!! Lovely to see you!
Kelly, Judy sends her love!
Judy you are magnificent love to see you in Philly too
Chantal, Judy sends her love 😘
I love that the sink will be below the window, love the fabulous cabinetry from upstairs and the green cabinetry in the boot room(?) where the staircase is staying, the scullery, and the laundry/freezer room. How fun this will be when complete!! Glad you have someone helping you with Mark's care. Remember not all of us are comfortable on the "other" side of a camera, but you are improving! I'm thinking that having someone else with the camera will help. ♥
Mary, Thank you so much for your lovely words! Are you sure you have not seen Mark in the videos?? Ha ha ha ha (Judy!) LOL. Thank you for watching and commenting!
My Carol song warmed my heart Judy ❤❤. Cannot wait to see how this is transformed; the kitchens could not be in better hands. And the one liners from Mark, the sass master, epic!
Hi Nadine, Judy told me your comment was very inspirational! LOL Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great job, thanks for showing us around.
Kelly, thank you!
The Six million dollar man sound effect made me realize I need to follow y’all. ❤ Beautiful place.

Franke, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Lots of love from France!
Mark your written comments are very cheeky. A sink and dishwasher for cocktails ....OMG I am so impressed and a wine refrigerator.....have you died and gone to heaven. Goodness don't put Judy near the Limoge porcelain. Thank you for the detailed explanation of what is planned but I have no idea of what you are doing with all those rooms, front kitchen and back kitchen etc. I was so excited by the cocktail sink and dishwasher that I forgot to concentrate...I am happy to just coast along and see how it all turns out. Best wishes for a successful renovation of this area.
Howdy Jayne, Judy was eyeing the Meissen china and I just about had a fit! Lol... We want to thank you for being one of our biggest fans and for making comments and supporting our journey. Our love from France, Mark and Phillip

Thanks. That was really interesting.
Corinne, Thank you for watching and commenting!
I love watching y'alls vlog! I love the humor! The plans for the "kitchens" is amazing!! But a suggestion is that you have another laundry somewhere, so you don't have to bring all the dirty clothes thru the lovely kitchen areas. Just a suggestion. Take care Judy and Marc!
Crocheting, gardening, chatea-u-niverse watcher, you are right, we probably should, and there is a whole room devoted to linen storage, but we cannot get plumbing to it without destroying a beautiful ceiling below. Sigh... But we like to say "that is what servants staircases are for and we have two of them!!" LOL thank you for watching and commenting!
Fab! It will be amazing when finished, your looking a lot happier Marc, its good to see.
Creative Cottage... seeing Mark... ha ha ha haaaaa! As always Thank you for watching and commenting!
Those beautiful Cornue ranges cost thousands of dollars. They are beautiful! You might want to consider a dumb waiter in the laundry room that goes to the bedrooms so you don't have to carry linens down several flights of stairs. Would be handy for other things, too.
Linda, we looked at a laundry chute option, but nowhere to put it that made the job easier, and we like to say "that is what servants staircases are for and we have two of them!!" LOL thank you for watching and commenting!
Love the humor! Love the comments placed over the video! Hooks could be used to dry herbs. The aroma should be wonderful! Thank you for the vlog that is unique!! Magnifique!!
Pat, Thank you for your kind words, and the herbs on the hooks is a super good idea!! Thank you for watching and commenting!

Also, how is the library coming along??
Also, how is Mark coming along with his physio??
Good idea to hang herbs etc on the hooks.
Hi Leslie, thank you for asking about the work going on in the other rooms... This happens to be the topic of our next video so you must wait just a little bit. But I can give you a hint... It is horrifying!!!! Lol

We're so happy we found your channel!
Wishing the both of you good health, happiness, love and success in however you define it. 💞
Hi Millie, Welcome to our crazy family!! we thank you for your kind wishes and wish all the same to you! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Personally, I would want the dishwasher by the dish storage cupboards. And most of your laundry will be from the bedrooms, linens, towels, etc. Why not have a washer/dryer on the same floor unless you like carrying laundry up and down steps. Love your chateau!
Dennis, we did try really hard to add additional washing machines upstairs, as well as a sink for a potential bar, unfortunately there is not a way to get drainage into the two rooms that were being considered without filling in ceilings below. I could not have the ceilings destroyed so it is the stairs for the laundry. 🤣🤣🤣
The dishwashers are only 15 feet away from the storage, and in a place this big that is right next-door. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for the comment !! ❤️
Hahahah! Oh Judy! Hahaha ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Hee hee hee, Judy sends her love!
You need a library ladder for that beautiful cabinet1?
Donna, or a really really tall butler!! lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@atthechateau just look for a basketball player!!! LOL
The bell!!! Love them. I grew up in a old neighborhood in Philadelphia, PA. The favorite Aunt Ellen's house was across a drive way from the local Catholic Church which was at the time, very well attended. I heard them and loved listening to them everytime they tolled. They always were sending some message as to the time of day or special times to attend to a Mass or a prayer time. Those were the days of old. Most old churches no longer maintain their church bells because of the cost of maintenance and the diminished attendance and church members to support the cost. It's quaint and a big throwback to sweeter times for me. Please don't "damn" the bells. I love your layout description and can not wait to see it into the finish.
Maureen, fear not, the comment was about the timing of the bells!! Lol... the local Church rings the bells throughout the day and they are very old-world charming!!

At 22:22, I was thinking, could you ultra finish and clean the beautiful stone wall and then put multiple clear coat sealers on it? This would make for easy cleaning of the wall. I was just wondering about this idea. Beauty, shine, and easy cleaning.
Hi Kathy, thank you for watching and commenting! Unfortunately moisture is a huge issue in a stone house, and putting a sealant on the stone would trap moisture inside the stones. However, there are some breathable finishes and perhaps we will look at using one to bring out the colors. Thank you!
Your chataeu is huge...and such history...any ghosts yet...its so old there must be...the stone is incredible, And that is what you expect to see in a castle in France...but is it dusty? do you seal it...Judy your hair looked lovely, very bouncy curly...oh... And the superman run...well done, now I did LOL...I hope that was your intention...I see this was a year ago..I'm working through your introductions,, really nice guys
Diane, not to disappoint, but, no ghosts.... she is silent as a graveyard ! 👀👀🤔 And of course the run was for humor, but not superman, think more Steve Austin, the 6 million dollar man! 😆😆

as to our former careers, we still have them and are working, unfortunately 😂 Phillip is in high level technology and I am a Graphic artist.

I’m curious, since that staircase is coming out, can a possible laundry chute go in? So you can drop down clothes and bedding, without the need to bring them down and through the kitchen.
Hi Terra, we actually looked for a good spot for a laundry chute, and nothing really worked. The ne we realized that is what servants staircases are for, and we have two of them! Now I just have t find some servant!! Lol Thank you for watching and commenting!
And a hot press for laundry room you don't want Judy hand ironing 😅

Newfiedogmom, Never too long in the tooth! I believe they used to say, Keep on trucking! Lol Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment.
Love those enormous kitchen storage cabinets -- glad they come apart, I wondered how they could be moved otherwise (early "Ikea"??). You are (re-) building a truly professional chef's kitchen! Being from Louisiana (USA) where we take pride in cooking, and hospitality with food, I surely have an appreciation for it (let's make some roux first!). We live in a plantation-style home build in 1932, and believed this is really "old" .. however, seeing the traces of history and the 14th century tower in your chateau, it now feels like a brand-new house in comparison! All the very best to you guys, and much success in getting it finished soon! Surely, you will be overrun with bookings, once it becomes available for the privilege to spend time in your home! Marshall (Coyo)
Marshall, Phillip actually call them the original flat pack 🤣, and it is a good thing they come apart. We were worried briefly that they had been built in place.
Phillips brother and sister in law live in New Orleans. We have been many times and adore it. We were on the verge of buying a house there... Katrina put an end to that. Literally happened 2 weeks after we had spent 9 days looking at homes and we had chosen one. We were in the "do we seriously want to live in New Orleans" stage when... big blowing winds made us decide no.
But I do adore it. I can imagine that a same sex couple has its challenges in Louisiana, but we all find our crew.
Our best from the south of France and you must come to visit!! Judy is waiting 🤣🤣
PS, that practically brand new house of yours sounds wonderful !

Hi Susan... We discussed an elevator (We are so American hee hee) but, there is not a gray pace for one without a major sacrifice. However, we have three ground floor guest rooms! as well as eight upstairs. I think the three below should suffice. Lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@atthechateau oh that is perfect then!! Who wants to go upstairs, It only means you have to clean 🤪🤪🤪In all seriousness, I love your chateau, just beautiful layout of the rooms. I really like the flow of the rooms and epically the grand entrance!! What large town are you closest to! It would help me see in my minds eye what area
You are in.
Big hug to you both, and Aunt Judy too 💗
