- John Constable Grave, Dracula and Peter Pan - The cemetery at St. John at Hampstead is the final resting place of many famous people. The Llewelyn Davies brother were the ones who inspired J.M.Barrie to write Peter Pan and their family tomb is there along with John Constable who painted The Haywain. In Bram Stoker's Dracula Lucy is entombed here also.
Then you can walk up Church Row to see how a street might have looked in the 17th century as it hasn't changed!
Louis Patisserie - In the 60s Louis Permayer opened his Hungarian patisserie in Hampstead and it still retains its original features today and a lovely selection of cakes!
There are several nice pubs, my favourite being The Holly Bush, an old coaching inn.
Goldfinger - at number 2 Willow Road is Erno Goldfinger's house. He was an architect who didn't get on with his neighbour Ian Fleming who based his most famous James Bond villain on him!
You can even go inside as it's a museum.
Julian McDonnell takes you on a beautiful and nostalgic walk around this beautiful village including Flask Walk, Well Walk,Whitestone Pond
and all the places mentioned above which make a wonderful day trip from London.

Thanks everyone....one of these days I'll be a star!!!!!!!
You are already a star! I hope I meet you some day (not in a pub, of course)
Maybe I saw you there with mine!
Would you do one on Kilburn and Harrow on The Hill please?
Sorry mate I tried telling my friends about your channel. Because I find it absolutely fascinating. The only problem is julian... I haven't got any friends. But I will say this I spent 4 hours on your channel so what does that say?? I think I have a new friend.🤢
What about the house where De Gaulle lived in during the war? And di you say Ian Fleming lived in Hampstead? That would have been worth a visit.
I was born and bred in Hampstead and it's still my favourite part of London. I'd move back if I could afford to! Spent 23 happy years here.
Yes, it's lovely up there. When I'm a bit more rich I'll buy a house there!!
@Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films
It is a lovely place. It is still so well kept and well maintained after so many centuries. I think one need not be rich to live there.
So you're a good old-fashioned English proof ?
'Ampstead!! Luv the heef me ol' china used to trot my plates of meat up there with her indoors! 'Ampstead is gone now bought over by yuppies and incomers more money than brains! Could not buy a gaff here now! Can't clasp your mince pies on good 'Larndon' grub!! No jelly eels, mash, cockles, mussels, egg pies, gravy in sight anymore!!
@@kenneththompson8933 as an American that sounds disgusting
During the early days of WW2 I lived in Hampstead. On a Sunday morning my dad used to take me out for a walk while my mum got the dinner ready. Sometimes we would walk up to the whitestone pond, and very often the air raid siren would go off as we reached it. The siren itself was just across the road from the pond. We used to stand close to the siren and look out over London (the trees were much smaller then and we had a good view) and watch the bombers coming towards us. The nearest we got to the enemy planes was once when a Me110 swooped low over the vale of health.
@Berliner Stadtschloss I too would like to see WW2 in todays history books, just to see if they tally with my recollections.
Wow, what a romantic story of Hampstead, lol.
It’s a beautiful part of London . I love both of the George’s . Thanks for sharing RIP George Michael 😢
I was in Hampstead today
It is one of my favourite places in London 🙂❤
Mate I love the Holly Bush, last time there met the founders/owners of the Pie Mash Club, bloody marvellous, Splendid my good man
Spent two great years in Hampstead between 1992 and 1994. Working at the Taj Mahal on Rosslyn Hill. Lovely people in Hampstead.
I hope this channel reaches 1 million subscribers...
I'm Italian and when I was 15 years old I saw Clive Griffith's videos about London on tv. YOU ARE GREAT!
Really? I haven't seen that. My mum is Italian. Maybe we're related!
Just found your channel! I was a foreign student at a College in Hampstead in the early 1970´s. As a residential student. we ate all meals in the dining room in the school. Food there was, well, not so good. Sometimes, even not eatable....So at 6:08, I saw that cake shop, I couldnot believe it. It is still there! My only consolation during on and off 3 years in school -.was their chocolate cake!!! Thank you for uploading!!!
Loved this tour as I used to live on Frognal Gardens by the church in early 1980s.
These are so pleasant to watch. Thanks for making them. You hit on a great mix of history and informal chat. Good length. It is far more fun for people around the world to wander aimlessly around Hamstead with you and your friends than it is to watch a tourist video.
Thanks. I know what you mean. That said, these are my own stye of tourist videos!
Thanks Joolz, I loved it as usual! In the movie "Bunny Lake is missing" you can see how Cannon Lane and the Du Maurier villa were back in 1965. It's the main location of the movie, which is one of my favourite Otto Preminger's.
Great stuff Joolz. You were standing outside the house owned by Peter Cook in Church Row. The East End Victorians called it 'Appy Ampstead' and then they walked down the hill to the Bull and Bush pub. You mention the water. Just past Whitestone Pond there is the Vale of Health where people in the 17th century went to escape the plague.
Greetings from Riga! Love Hampstead.❤
Thanks so much x sharing your video ...I actually lived a few weeks one summer time
in Hampstead ...so I told my Angel look were we been years ago ...
All the best from northSardinia !
Just discovered your channel and I love it! Your walks bring back so many great memories! I lived in your country for 7 1/2 years in the mid 80"s through the early 90"s. What a blessed time to be in england. I'm a yank ,but England is the only place that felt like home. Keep up the vids. Take care and be safe!
Very amusing, and likeable fellow.light hearted but informative.......oh dear,I hope the parting shot of tally ho doesn't indicate a penchant for fox hunting....if so,then I take back my positive remarks.
Yes they were called "PEELERS" Please keep your You Tube going, I was born in St John's Wood and lived in Stafford Terrace Kensington now in Sydney AU. I am learning so much and loving it.
We sailed our little boat on the pond. I had my tonsils removed at the hospital. Elizabeth Taylor was (chauffeured in her white RR just missed running over my mother) and I remember seeing Oliver Reid and his entourage walking about.
Joolz, you are a class act!
I've just discovered your historian walkabout videos. Love them! Keep them coming!
Thanks. Yes, I'm not much of a historian but I do take an interest in the history. I try my best!
Holly Bush My favourite pub in London! I've come down from Scotland for a London break a couple of times in recent years. I brought a book from my local library - 32 London Walks. I must have now done c 25 of them. So I recognise a lot of locations Jools visits, e.g. Goldfinger's flats, Smithfields etc.
Very enjoyable series.
When I win the Euromillions I'll buy a place in Hampstead - out of the way a bit, but easy access to the centre.
I will too.On Swains Lane
Hello from Paris lockdown during the virus it is lovely to walk around London with you thanks so much
If I ever get you to show me around London I think a coffee shop will do let's leave the pub. 😬 love and peace to everyone at this time. 🙏✌
We lived at 5 Willow Road. I used to babysit for the family at 3 that is now a museum. Can’t afford to live in Hampstead now.....😢
OMG I was an idiot and once took the hampstead station stairs. Totally regretted it. (over 300 narrow stairs! :O)
Much like the steps at, although not as far, Covent Garden.
320. I did it last month - you should get a certificate. 😂
That was so much fun, I live in Gospel Oak and it has opened my eyes to Hampstead, will have to take a walk with my cameras!
Great video seeing the various architecture and urban lanes and plenty of trees and ponds nice area 😁☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland ace coverage
I was hoping for a quick visit at Keats ' house, been there and loved it together with the whole area. Thanks for your super informative and witty vids.
I used to date a girl back in the early 80's who lived next to to Boy George's house in Hampstead. Thanks for the little bit of history of a much favoured location in London.
I used to get Boy George's mail delivered to my home accidentally as I lived around the corner from him with the same house number.
Mostly in plain brown packaging
I absolutely love your videos! I’m currently watching them all over again for the third or fourth time lol
Went there today for the first time , beautiful place , saw snappy snaps, and so many porches
Thanks for these videos Joolz! Will be crossing the pond to London later in the week. Your cheeky Brit wit will make my stay a lot easier! Again, thanks a bunch!
and did you ?
I am desperate to visit Hampstead and Highgate. You'd think I lived in Australia, but no, just Lancashire. It's just too expensive so I love these virtual tours.
Thanks. Yes, there's much more to see of course.
I have lived at three addresses in Hampstead. 18 Gardnor Rd. 59 Flask Walk, and 37 Christchurch Hill. All during the war. (WW2)
Tell us more??? A video with yourself in it would be ace!!!
Flask walk is lovely, was up there 3 weeks ago and so friendly considering you are in London.
I watch these one after another some afternoons ideal during the lockdown especially if like me you love London and history very entertaining great sense of humour
Was waiting for the visit to the beautiful invaluable Keats House.🏛
Fenton House has a marvelous collection of old instruments, especially old keyboards. You can apply to play one of these old harpsichords or early pianos. There is also a beautiful walled garden behind the house, and as I recall a nice collection of beautiful dishes in every room
You and your crew were having way too much fun in this one! Ha! This area is really beautiful! Your knowledge of London and narration are superb! ❤️❤️
Interesting and fascinating tour, enjoyed and thanks for sharing your video
Great video. My father worked night shifts in Hampstead and used take the early morning (first) tube. The lift / elevator wasn’t always ready at that time of day and he used to walk down the stairs (.. and yes, it is a long flight of stairs .. he made me walk up them !)
Good excercise, lad!
Return the favour once he’s in an old people’s home 👺
Super video @Joolz Guides I have a soft spot for this part of London, the historic houses, the Holly Bush pub. I enjoyed your informative strolling! Thank you.
okay, i gotta say your channel may attract others of my fellow deadheads-today i saw the one on grosvenor square, mayfair and now with jack straw’s place-im loving these synchronicities not to mention just the pure historical value of this channel. well done, joolz!!✌️🎸👏👏
These are helping my procrastination. Watching on a loop.
3:21 I love that pub ! Went there last November 2018. Going to back to London this December because it was wonderful.
Great stuff Joolz , ive watching loads of your videos all informative and given you mention Minder in a few of them you are one of our own. Gawd bless you.
The eloquence, the suave voice, ahhh what took me so long to find this clip? You ought to sing more, you have magnificent vocals.
Thanks Mandee. You have a beautiful voice too!
Another cracking video production, Joolz. Totally interesting about this London suburb, and a lot of facts and history that we wouldn't have known about. Many thanks.
I was born there in St Marys maternity hospital opposite Whitestone pond, now apartments.
Hampstead Heath was our playground.Happy days.
I really like the way you take us on a tour around Hampstead...thank you
I walked around the Vale of Health. Lovely quiet place. DH Lawrence lived there for a while
Always loved Hampstead best part of London.
As usual, wonderful banter and interesting facts.
Brilliant!!! Great Work Joolz
I used to drink in Jack Straw's Castle in the 80s and 90s when it was a pub. It is now luxury flats. Opposite it and behind the war memorial, is Heath House, which from 1790 was the home of Sir Samuel Hoare, a wealthy Quaker banker, who was one of the prime campaigners for the abolition of slavery. William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry were often at Heath House.
Correct sir. Jack Straws castle was owned at one time by Marie Lloyd if my memory serves me well
Great video. I was in hampstead this spring and in fact I took the stairs... Down only ;)...
It was an... Experience ;)
Yes...down is ok but you get very dizzy!
mrdjv2 I've had to walk UP the stairs when the lifts weren't working. The groans from the other travelers were hilarious.
good show ..greatest
Hi Julian, I just found your channel, and just want to mention that your films are excellent. Well produced, excellent subject, relaxed and informative fun presentation. Entertaining!! I attempted something similar in Amsterdam and understand how hard it is to film in public, and so resorted to sneaky camera work and narration. I take my hat off to you sir. Wonderful success and best wishes, keep it up. Simon Amsterdam.
Thanks Simon.. Yes, you feel my pain! It's very hard work making it looked relaxed when people are hassling you the whole time.
Love Hampstead bought up round here . Hoping to move back
My favourite part of London, love a walk round there feels such a special place, wish i could afford to live there
sounds dangerous could slip an breakyer neck, on all those used joeys
Great editing and sound! All of your videos have wonderful sound tracking
i've been to London oh, perhaps 15 times and enjoyed every minute of it.
I think that Jools is very good at what he does. What he does is he " knows things".
I particularly like his choice of music, I always hear the refrain " cause I'm a Londoner" in my imagination....
Love this channel and have recommended it to many!
Brilliant! That's to be encouraged.
beautiful district the architecture makes you dream .....thank you !!
Yes, it's very old style. Lovely.
you really have to experience that !! soon !!
These videos are delightful.
My all time favorite vlog. Cheers Joolz
Must say.... 2nd viewing of one of this guys uploads and completely thoroughly enjoyed it.

I hope to visit my teacher ,gannich family ,Thanks dear you make me cry, memory nice time ,friends ,teacher, and Mr Gandhi.
These vids are great and full of knowledge about London this should have 100 thousands of scribes. keep up the good work bud.
Thanks. Yes, I'll never understand the youtube algorythm or indeed how TV companies select people. My worry is that I'll run out of places to feature or simply get tired of making them before I reach the level when it becomes really profitable, but it's lovely to know people are enjoying my work. Thanks for your kind words.
Quite pleasant and entertaining. Thank you.
Hampstead is my native home town, too, where I was born and raised... I really think about it a lot, there are so many great memories of my childhood here, and I miss it. Not just because I'm from Hampstead, but it's always been one of my most favourite ever areas of London and all. I used to attend services at St. John-at-Hampstead Parish Church with my mum (rest her good soul) - not l'm religious in any way (which l'm not whatsoever), but my mum did a lot of helping out in the community with friends she knew at the church, and she herself did have quite a religious background and upbringing.
But she never ever forced it down my throat, or anyone else's...
May you rest in peace Mum.😢
You are so upbeat & fun.
I enjoy your videos...so much research put into each one!
I know a bit more about hampstead now! 😀
Oh thanks. Well, I didn't need to research this one too much as I knew it pretty well. But yes, some of them are much harder than others. Harry Potter took me ages!
Very interesting, Thanks.
Credit where credit is due this is pure class. It's my first time and will watch more. It's interesting with a fun element- what's not to like. Although based on this episode there is no way I'm buying you a pint....
Well, quite! those pubs certainly seem to have something about them..my friend got ill after this too!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING US 🌎🔥
It s beautiful and looks so quiet
Just love this!!
That was great. Thanks

Thanks for you interesting videos. Hampstead is my favourite part of London.
You missed the Vale of Health where the great plague ceased because Hampstead is high up.
Loved your tour, thank you
