This happened to me when I paced my 12 year old daughter to her first 10km race last summer. I let her go ahead of me at the start and we ran together. I ended up 1 second faster and finished 50th and she finished 51st overall. Not intentional but it has given me the ability to consistently remind her about the time I crushed her in the 10km we did in Toronto :)
I had a similar experience in a 10k race last November. It was a complete stranger who had no intentions toward me at all. I was stalking him the whole race and passed him with about 600m to go. Finished 14 seconds ahead of him, so I thought I had won the masters division. I found out later that the medals were awarded on chip time and he edged me by 1 second!
I ran with my brother at the Manchester marathon and we both ran 2:58:09 exactly. That’s when I hatched a plan that the next marathon we ran I was going to let him cross the start line just a little bit before me for this exact reason 😉😭
@@l3138 aye, and i based my comment based on her time being 2 minutes from ''elite'' level. maybe i was spiteful bcz her short wasted a minute of my life. if she's capable, good for her.
The race number normally has a sensor, at certain intervals on the race there are, well "timing mat" across the road that detects when you the sensor you're wearing crosses it. Normally in races you have 2times, chip time based on the mat crossings (accurate). And gun time which is only pretty much accurate for those in the front rows
In big races you can't have everybody line up and start at the exact same spot, so when the 'gun' goes off, some people cross the sensor immediately and others a minute later. But if the person that started a minute later finishes at the same time (as in clock) as the person that started immediately, they will have ran 1 minute faster. So by holding back 1 second at the start and finishing at the exact same time, you will have ran 1 second faster.
There are 2 timing mats in the races I've done. Apparently, there is an antenna by them, I haven't noticed it, I'll look next time. The mat is to protect the power cord.
Timing mat has two purposes: 1) Get your precise time during race (on events like marathons sometimes the last person starts 10-15 minutes after the first one, so in theory you can win a marathon (or any other race) even if you cross finish line second or third. 2) It keeps tracking if you are not cheating, taking shortcut. If you miss timing mat, then you are automatically disqualified. For that reason timing mats are often put in places where is high risk of cheating, on U turns for example.
Both ended at same time, 1 held back by 1 second at the start and caught up to the other. Meaning the entire race they were 1 second ahead of the other, even though they ended on the finish line at the exact same time.

It’s not cheating- he ran the same distance!
Evil Genius! 😂 love the gamesmanship !
Definitely not cheating. Superior tactics wins the race here.
I don't know if it's cheating, but it's definitely funny 😂
I did think 'don't worry you'll have beaten him on gun time' but I checked the results and Sarah didn't. This guy was just a smart cookie!

MY FRIEND DID THE SAME THING😂 so funny
Totally ok!!’😂
Lol, not cheating, but a bit of a dog act. I approve.
That is brilliant!
Definitely not me watching this clip over 5 times to gain understanding of this method. 👀
I just did this yesterday 😂
lol, I’ve done that 😂
I've done the same to my mate😂
Tactics right there.
Totally ok! lol
That is what i do every time!!!

Cheating? No
Is this worth loosing a friendship over? Yep
😅😅😅
He would have to make up that one second catching up to you so there is no cheating
Made me laugh
He and she. Different races. So not cheating. Both in different categories 😊
Can someone explain this to me? How can you get a faster time if you set off later than your partner?
He started a second later and crossed the line with her so was technically faster
@@runningchannel thank you.
Thanks! I was trying to figure that out too.
Glad I wasn't the only one 😂
she's never run 10km in 45mins.
You're new to the channel, huh...

This is going to result in people holding behind the line in a stalemate until someone blinks.
That's genius. How could anyone be angry and not impressed with it.
Ive never done a big race. This is the first time ive heard of a timing mat. Does that keep track of who starts when?

Oh I should have done that at the start at the half marathon after I was pipped
😂🤣😆
Interesting that you have a story on cheating with the current Kate cheating drama out there…
Just thinking the same thing. I probably would’ve sat on this clip for a while until that story is better understood.
Has andy had a hair transplant?
It’s not cheating on the condition, that that person doesn’t slow you down during the race.
So ok :-D
She took a head start though so... who's the cheater?
Ask Kate, she knows all about cheating.
I don’t get it?

How about asking Kate Carter who knows first hand what cheating is all about in a race
Not ok
Rat!!! 😂😂😂
I'm fairly sure he did it to make you and others laugh.
It’s a skunk move.
😂😂😂😂😂
I have no opinion on this.
