I started to train consistently when I purchased my GPS watch. It also helped me fix many issues like my cadence that was too slow or it make me slow down when I start a run too fast. I bought some recovery tools and never used them lol
Loved this conversation with Kofuzi! i don't use recovery tools to help me recover after a run! a good night sleep within the eight hour-ten hour will make me feel ready for the next workout, i only use one shoe for daily training and one shoe for racing, don't have a gym membership when i have one for free at home, don't really use gels or anything like that other than when training for a race, use running clothing till they are actually in no use and the only thing that i spend alot on is just race fees lol!
Oh, wow, you are just like me. My main running expense is race fees. I have two pair of running shoes only, one for roads, one for dirt trails. I also wear my running clothes until a few months after they are worn out! My "gym" is a Central Park lawn for sit-ups, etc., or my living room floor if the lawn is too wet or snowy.

Believe me you need all the shoes, once they wear off you can rotate to another ones, I made the mistake that I only needed two pairs but in reality you need them all.
Speaking as a 67 year old runner (2:46 marathoner) I suspect that the older you are the more you will be working on your recovery from runs, whether with a massage gun, roller or something as simple as yoga. As a retiree I enjoy the luxury of getting the sleep I need most days.
I love this video. It shows the true authenticity of Kofuzi. I've been a physio and a runner for over 20yrs. This advice is backed up by a large body of evidence which is strange from a running influencer. 8hrs sleep is the scientifically proven best recovery tool all other attempts are useless if you aren't sleeping well.
Once again Kofuzi is dead on.... sometimes buying that "fun" thing makes running more fun and makes it stick. Buying the Garmin was a game changer for me. Seeing all my stats and various measurements keep me motivated. Throw in a pair of exciting supershoes and I WANT to run.
Love my Garmin Fenix 7 Solar Saphire. The stats and maps are a game changer. But I really love the sleep monitor. It really helps with wanting to get great sleep and recovery. Didn’t buy the watch for the sleep monitor, but i do find myself getting very excited every single morning to see how my sleep went. Really reflects how my day is gonna go.
I was also surprised by this answer. As someone who just can’t get on board with massage guns, rollers, recovery slides, etc, I’m glad to know I’m not alone. 8 hours of sleep and 2 minutes of stretching post-run has honestly been enough.
Haha, Kofuzi always being classy and trying not to be negative. Sometimes, you just have to read between the lines to really find out what he dislikes.
I have a hard time just paying my registration fees for races, much less the stuff!! I am CHEAP!! 🤣🤣🤣 Looking forward to your interviews with Kofuzi! Did my Half Marathon in San Antonio on Sunday! Not even close to getting near 1:55:00, but I did get a new PB in the Half Marathon by 18 seconds! I pulled a 1:59:39 with a negative split! Will do light workouts this week, plan ahead for my next Half Marathon on February 25th, in my small town of Cuero, TX. Talk again soon, Kori!
I got to test the boots after a long run once, a physio brought them for us. Never again! Painful, cramp inducing! Stretching and rolling with rest works for me.
I think it depends on the runner. I can say that the recovery tools have definitely helped. He said that maybe he “doesn’t work as hard to need em”, maybe that’s it. Because of my occupation, I’m required to run upwards of 40-50 miles a week, and walk upwards of hundreds of miles, and I can definitely say that the recovery tools have helped amazingly. I didn’t use em before and after using them, it changed everything. Especially the lacrosse ball and foam roller. To include the type of shoe. I used random shoes that looked good and felt good, and ran however many miles I had to that day, and after a while it began to hurt my legs and feet. After diagnosing the problem, and getting the right shoes, it also changed everything for me. I think the way we spend our money and the categories we deem as fit or unfit for us and what is a waste, all depends on the runner.
The real plonkers are the ones who needlessly upgrade Garmins etc for next slightly improved iteration adds nothing to your running but must have it...their money to waste but consumerism gone mad, always makes me chuckle when they mock my 8 year old watch..time,pace and distance is all i need😄
This reminds me of George Carlin’s famous shtick about “Stuff”! It’s a classic that will never become irrelevant. I’m with Kofuzi on recovery tools, but then I’m spoiled. My husband (aka “Run Caddy”) is also naturally a great massage therapist and so I don’t use my foam roller much. And that + tennis balls do fine if you don’t have the luxury of a good massage.
Love this guy. We make the sport harder than it is. It is just one foot after another. On the other hand some may need this stuff for reasons I will never understand. We all have our own pace and the = our race. Best!
I still have running gloves that are 5 years old. Running tops that are 10 years old. I even have a high-vis gillet I bought in 2008, I still fits and looks fine.
I'm with Mike on the recovery tools. The empirical evidence is actually extremely slim on their benefit. I'd also add the custom nutrition just based on price. I've started making my own-- more money for shoes!
I think gadgets like the Whoop with monthly subscription fees are a complete waste of money. A Garmin watch can give you all the data points- sleep, HRV, etc with no monthly fee, and besides... who even takes these metrics too seriously?
I use a whoop and am interested in the best running watches. I was gifted an Apple Watch and it’s fine but I know the battery is not good. Heard about the garmins, which would track my sleep and be good. Also I do use the Nike Run Club app and want to keep doing so. Can I connect that to the garmins?
When it comes to recovery tools, as you get older i think they become more necessary to help you recover so you can run the next day with out sore legs... in saying that sleep is the king of recovery tools
I completely stopped using roller and doing stretching a couple of years ago. No specific warmups, no physio and other bs like this. Just run/jog/cycle/swim everyday - have not known any running related injuries since then 🤷🏻♂️
As a cyclist and runner, biggest wastes of money for me have been specialized energy snacks and drinks, and dietary supplements. Now I just buy cookies or whatever from the dollar store, anything that doesn't melt in my jersey pocket. If I want a caffeine boost toward the end of a long, hard ride or run, I'll add cheap energy drink powered mixes from Kroger. While I've tried almost every supplement recommended, I cant say most of them had any consistent benefit. The latest was alpha lipoic acid for chronic nerve pain from injuries and being hit by cars while cycling or running. Can't say it had any benefit after six weeks. If a supplement claims to need 2-8 weeks to be effective, they're probably attributing the real healing benefits of time and rest to some placebo effect associated with the supplement.
Every hobby has its share of products that are a waste of money. Running is by no means the worst of most expensive. Hobbies like hi-fi, golf, drumming, surfing are much more costly.
I buy too many running shoes. It is so tempting to buy all these shoes that I see on RUclips with all these runners I follow that give their opinion on these shoes. From trainers to race day shoes, I have so many. It drives my wife nuts, as she tells me that I don't need all these shoes, but I can't help it. This is my weakness and my love for running.
We have sore muscles and want to feel better. I have a crap ton of different rolers that don't work for me and I don't use. I have one massage gun I use a ton.
Heavy disagree on the massage gun. Well, I'm a cyclist and only running occasionally but after both 8h rides or short intense intervals this thing has proven itself to be a game changer for me.
I have too many fast day shoes. It's a problem & a waste of money because One, I'm not fast. And Two, I own more fast day shoes than there are days in the week! I also have too many hats, caps, gloves, sunglasses, and BT earbuds. I own WAY too many BT earbuds!
I was thinking the same thing I used to run when I was younger and lighter. My legs are sore all the time now from running and thinking about getting a massage gun. Does it help?
GPS is great for running (whether by watch or phone), because it helps you log your runs. Before I had a consistent running log I lied to myself a lot. The GPS doesn't lie.
I absolutely am a sucker for gadgets - and I have "All" the recovery tools 😆 That being said I do think gadgets can be a hook in Kofuzi's words to get you out there and doing things. I was a cyclists for years before becoming a runner, my first Fenix watch was the "hook" that started my running journey 10 years ago. Many marathons/halfs/10k's later - I say if it works for you, buy it 🤪
This is important. One of the things that buoyed getting back into running was when I bought my Garmin. It helped getting to see HR, and all the data it has available. Seeing the progress on my watch helped me keep at it.
I am not convinced by massage guns, foam rollers, massage in general for anything other than short term relief. If you have a muscle that is really spazaminmg than maybe triger point or dry needling can help you relax enough to regain a normal posture and break that cycle. Really, a runner needs shoes and a stopwatch, and tjose are not 100% essential
Massage gun can be really cheap, and works well getting the hard to massage area to be relief of strains, especially the back 3 to 4 inches under the neck and shoulders. Then there are the shoes. You Don't need running shoes to get strong. You can run in cheap barefoot shoes $40 a piece which get you strong on all parts of your body, or you can even run in water shoes which cost you $15 at most, and they work your whole body more than any shoes you can imagine. Which back to massage gun, you probably need it sometimes for that much strains running almost barefoot. And also heat therapy helps too, i find a hand warmer heating up to 145℉ for hours and heat up those strained, cold muscle pretty effective. rechargeable ones cost about $30 to $50 a set. I do need clothes to run though, and socks, those cost $15 to $35 a piece. but since i run 6 days a week, and sweat during runs, I need exactly 6 of them each. That's about $300 to $400. And for gps, a very small bacpack with phone will do, so i don't need to write my records down every day. About $65. Now with all these, it amounts to about $600 and Since I use them 300 days of a year, that's $2 a day.
@@KoriRuns Yes, that is valid advice .... but ... I think some of these younger people are so hung up on gadgets and gizmos that they are missing the point of just simply living! [The only running gimmick I need is to have some of Eliud Kipchoge's leg speed injected into my legs. 😀]
Buy the most expensive bed/mattress you can that will give you the highest quality sleep. 6 hours of high quality sleep is superior to 8 hours of “ok sleep”. And don’t drink alcohol 6 hours prior to sleeping……just one drink can foul up your HRV while sleeping. Sleep is KING!
My pet peeve... energy gels. Way too expensive and disgusting! A great alternative: I get a 100-pack of raw-honey sticks for a fraction of the cost (if you search right) and take a bunch with me during long runs. Don't forget to bring a sandwich bag or so as they get pretty sticky when used and you don't want to just throw them aside (you shouldn't do that with gel packages, too, you dirty litterers!) 😁
Well, I can honestly say that I still wear the same basic digital watch I bought YEARS AGO - every run, every race. A few years ago I was given a fancy Samsung running watch (think it was about $300) and it's still in the box. I simply don't need it. Over the years I've taught/trained myself to know most of the metrics that these new watches provide. And it's funny, because sometimes I see people losing their minds because something has gone wrong with their watch and I just think to myself "well, that will teach you for being so dependent on technology".
I agree with you. I actually think if would spoil the joy of running for me if I had one of those super-advanced watched that gives me every possible statistic it can and even "grades" my effort. I would just throw it in the river out of annoyance. I have a cheap plastic digital watch I bought on Amazon years ago for $19.95 with a huge face with large numbers, easy to read while running. When I stop the run, I take my pulse to see what my heart rate is. That's it. Nothing fancy.
@@cathynewyork7918 For sure, and that's all you need. As the saying goes "the more connected we are, the more disconnected we become". Too many professional runners chasing times and performance, and at what cost? Taking drugs! It's just getting stupid. Time to go back to basics I say.
@@thepsychologist8159 I completely agree with you! I am an older, very simple, UN-sophisticated person, in both my running and my life -- and I think I am much happier for it. A simple run on the dirt bridle path in all weather, rain, snow, heat, fog, in Central Park truly brings me joy. Much more joy than the artificial environment of "high society." You would laugh at my "high-tech" running watch -- a simple digital watch bought for $19.95 on Amazon. I can afford more -- I just don't want it!
@@thepsychologist8159 Yes, the pro runners taking drugs to chase record race times perhaps is similar to the corporate rat race of people striving to climb the corporate ladder. I am very happy at where I am in my career but I am not working myself to death trying to get to the very top.
Very true. Often times I'll buy a recovery tool, think it's amazing then use it progressively less and less until it's in the back of a closet somewhere.
i don't get why people go through this. maybe it's because im not a runner and i dont understand the mindset. i only do jogs and sprints as part of my cross training. i thought the obvious mindset was to just get running kits for winter/rain and warm/normal in order to transition accordingly to the weather but people are buying all those things? what the hell for? does it even work? are they just saying it works because they don't want to be embarrassed? the only thing that i use and i know it works is puffing CBD vape if my muscles are killing me that bad. followed by a nice session of stretching or yoga if im motivated. works everythyme. thats my recovery tool. go drugs. lol
I think if you love something (running, photography, whatever) you're going to automatically be inclined to always be looking for that next greatest thing.
Kofuzi...the ultimate nice guy. "Are runners suckers?" I love the way he refused to agree with you because it might insult someone. You sound sick. I hope you're ok.
I wouldnt say that. Real serious runners having there split times saved every workout helps a whole lot. Not everyone trains with a coach that tracks sessions with splits so the watch really helps for lots
As someone that's spent hundreds of £$€ on recovery tools.. the ball, the roller, the massage gun, the boots.. totally agree with Mike.. nothing better than good old sleep!!

That and protein powder, recovery drinks, packaged food in general. Save bars, gels and sports drinks to runs. Otherwise, real food.
Excessive running shoe collection.
I just had 4 pairs delivered today…Ya, I have a problem
Running watches are the biggest waste. But we NEEEED them 😂🏃♂️🏃♂️
We buy into buying into it.
I trail run. No phone, no watch. I just run. Most running stuff is just a waste of time.
Guilty 🙋🏼♂️I am that brother😂
Kori, how do I follow you on Strava?
Be your own hero dude
Is that a coros Kofuzi is wearing?
Kofizi is in his early 40s and weighs 145ish. Those of us over 50 carrying a little more baggage can’t stay in the game without a massage gun.
I'm thirty years older than he is, and I don't own a massage gun. Just a cool-down walk and then gentle stretching after a run works just fine for me.
I think he makes the point that everyone is different. If it works for you, do it!
@@KoriRuns Yes, that is valid advice .... but ... I think some of these younger people are so hung up on gadgets and gizmos that they are missing the point of just simply living! [The only running gimmick I need is to have some of Eliud Kipchoge's leg speed injected into my legs. 😀]
He's skinny
Buy the most expensive bed/mattress you can that will give you the highest quality sleep. 6 hours of high quality sleep is superior to 8 hours of “ok sleep”. And don’t drink alcohol 6 hours prior to sleeping……just one drink can foul up your HRV while sleeping. Sleep is KING!
Honestly I don't use anything to recover and I don't even stretch before or after a run . 🤷♂️😂
💸 My Normatec boots! I opt for my $30 car buffer every time.
Hahaha, I also have a car buffer lol. When things get REALLY bad I put the massage gun away and pull that out 🤣
Well, I can honestly say that I still wear the same basic digital watch I bought YEARS AGO - every run, every race.
@@thepsychologist8159 Are you a psychologist? Or is that just your screen name?
@@thepsychologist8159 Yes, the pro runners taking drugs to chase record race times perhaps is similar to the corporate rat race of people striving to climb the corporate ladder. I am very happy at where I am in my career but I am not working myself to death trying to get to the very top.
Actually I'm not a Runner.
I just a Stuff Buyer who Run. Ha ha
Imagine using a starter gun every time you start a run.🤣😂🤣😂
I buy things for mandatory gears rules 😭😭
Runners are much better off than cyclists
The BEST thing to buy is Food, and time to Sleep
Things are only a waste of money if you dont use them.
I love bass fishing as well as running and I think that all hobbies have a bunch of bull shit that you don’t really need. Easy to fall for it tho
Glad to view you're going against the grain, Kori.
This was a short video. I’m still going to buy unnecessary things.
Is it your money? If it makes you happy buy it.

what took youtube so long to show me this channel?
If 80% runs are e easy and your sleeping is good you shouldn’t need recovery tools. I’m almost never sore unless it’s a sprint day
Lol, don't get into cycling. Now that is a money pit
J'avoue, mon Coros pod, pas vraimenrt utile, en plus,vu le prix....
You buy useful and useless stuff. But it is hard to distinguish, before you have the respective item for some time.
Very true. Often times I'll buy a recovery tool, think it's amazing then use it progressively less and less until it's in the back of a closet somewhere.
Common sense speaking right there.
i don't get why people go through this. maybe it's because im not a runner and i dont understand the mindset. i only do jogs and sprints as part of my cross training. i thought the obvious mindset was to just get running kits for winter/rain and warm/normal in order to transition accordingly to the weather but people are buying all those things? what the hell for? does it even work? are they just saying it works because they don't want to be embarrassed? the only thing that i use and i know it works is puffing CBD vape if my muscles are killing me that bad. followed by a nice session of stretching or yoga if im motivated. works everythyme. thats my recovery tool. go drugs.
I'm fine, just jammed out the record at the end of a long day. Yes, he's definitely a nice guy!
GPS watches, couldnt care less about my splits etc or sleep cycle. The amount of sport watches on online market places in January says it all really!
I wouldnt say that. Real serious runners having there split times saved every workout helps a whole lot. Not everyone trains with a coach that tracks sessions with splits so the watch really helps for lots
I like to know how far I’ve run
wait until you get older man.
have spray On ⛸ 🥾 review? kofuzi🎉
