Understanding yourself and your calling is absolutely OK, regardless if you have to take a backwards, diagonal, whatever direction is needed, whatever timeline is needed. That's OK. The only argument I have with Vaynerchuk is that he's a Jets fan. EXACTLY. Do not worry about others' expectations. We may be in different spots right now, with what I have responsibility for, so it's a bit different. But still seeing where I can make passions into realities. You are WONDERFULLY brave in sharing this, too. YOU MATTER. And you will help someone with this. Big time.
Thank you for being honest and open about your journey! I think in reality there is no step backward, because even if you fail or succeed at something, you don't really start back at the beginning. To me, there's only opportunities (whether we see them or not). The rest are fear-based assessments to keep humans productive and/or compliant, but the human spirit is expressed in so many beautiful and unquantifiable ways. One of the great artists whom I respect so dearly, Wayne Shorter, was asked what he felt was most important in life, and he responded very quickly "Imagination," and when asked why not family, or love, and so on, he said "Without imagination, you wouldn't appreciate those things anyway." As creative people, we deal in imagination, but I think it's up to us to infuse every other person we encounter with the creative spirit.
That is such a good way to think!! We really don’t start back at the beginning. We have simply gathered more data, more life experience, more lessons learned, and more wisdom along the way! Thank you so much for sharing all of this!
@@melaniegriesemer Well said! Everything I've been doing the last decade or more (and I mean everything) is being utilized in some way for the job I have now. It can be easy to want to impress an employer with something you think they want to see, but when I talk to friends about applying for jobs, I aways say it's more important to express yourself authentically, and more often than not, they will want to work with you for who you are, not simply fulfilling a role. I think the same is true of all relationships.
The “one step back” idea is very interesting. Have never heard it before. I went from owning to renting, and I always thought it was the smartest move ever.
Take this how you will, you’re a smart, funny, creative beautiful and thoughtful woman. You are a woman of faith and you come from a good family with solid core values…
you get into a mental funk and start thinking about where you are in life and wonder if what would have happened if you ended up getting that job you applied and interviewed for or if a teacher you had in high school saw the potential in you and encouraged/motived you in right direction. you start to think about what you could have changed in your past that would have led you down a different path.
Ohh so true I used to do that all the time but I’ve learned to just appreciate the journey exactly as it is and all the lessons I’ve learned/am learning. We can’t control the past or future we can only control our actions and decisions in this moment and going forward! We just have to keep moving forward with intention. (Mostly just advice to myself😂)
I know we have different lives, but I feel similar to your position given we're the same age. I didn't go to college for four years, I did graduated with an associate's level degree and chose to pursue IT. I ended up hating my career choice, before that it was a wasted year at art college when I was 19. I am fortunate that I have an office job that pays my mortgage and bills, but anything extra I'm going to have to settle for either Uber Eats or a wage job. I can relate to the comments about our egos preventing us from working these jobs. I had to accept the fact that I am not entitled and maybe I am gonna have to return to Dunkin Donuts like I did 11 years ago and start over. I am single with no kids, I just feel like I'm going to take a big risk going to college and getting into debt again.
The good thing is there are so many ways to make money now that don’t require a college degree! Also I am actively trying not to think of any years as wasted but rather lessons learned and data collected. Experiencing art school is such an amazing part of your journey, it’s sad to hear you think it was a wasted year - it makes for an interesting and well rounded, creatively inspired person! Uber eats, minimum wage jobs, the way I see it is nothing has to be permanent, it’s just all part of the process to make some money to get us through and learn along the way.
@@melaniegriesemer I'm maintaining my funds, but still in paycheck to paycheck mode. I am single and have to support myself in my house, which I can manage, but putting money away is the challenging part. Right now I can only put away $1200 a month from my Wal-Mart job. My primary job feels like a bill machine which I hate.
I should have added, I actually don’t choose to surround myself with people who say what I do or who I am is corny anymore and I intentionally choose what energy I allow into my life now. I used to live a boundary-less life in the past!

Yes for sure!! So many lessons learned/still learning! Good things coming for us, if we just keep going

You are far from corny and far from a failure. I admire your willingness to try something and pivot where necessary…
