Wearing Glasses with a Motorcycle Helmet

  • I recently got new glasses and wanted to see if they might fit my helmet. Although I don't want to wear them while riding (because I wear contacts and can see much better in them), I know that many riders do.
In this video, I'll touch on why sometimes your glasses may not fit in a helmet; what kinds of helmets to look at to get a better fit, and Ill show you whether or not glasses fit in my RF-1200

I'm a new motorcycle rider. That wears glasses all the time. Never realised how much of a pain in the ass this really is.

The main thing is not to worry. Even if you have to go and buy another cheap pair of frames that are light, comfortable and maybe even flexible that you can use just while riding. There are many ways to make it work so don't let it stop you from riding. Good video.

Heeey... Genuinely that sliding them up and then down movement... saved me.... thank you so, so much! I know this may sound like a dumb person and for sure I can be... but I'm a newbie when it comes to full face helmets and never realized how much of a pain they can be for glasses wearers. Cheers!

I've been lucky with the fit of Arai helmets. My chunky wayfarers have always fit well. Currently sporting an Arai Defiant. Fogging still sucks with glasses though. Not a contacts fan. You guys coming to MotoGP at COTA?

I was looking for a way to fit sunglasses with my new helmet without the provision for glasses. Dark shield is expensive, you video shows helmet with cutout for glasses. Geez no extra tips?

Sadly in my country I can't use contacts ones. I can get a fine, because in my licence says that I use glasses, so if I don't use them, they can fine me even if I have contacts on

My problem is a narrow head, with a bit more peaked top. than the average. I have been using eyeglasses since I was 12, over 2/3 of my life. Some helmets allow the bows to pass through the cheek pads, but not many. I have very thin bows (thickness from my face) which is a plus. Some pads that have provision for bows have the slot in the wrong place, which basically jiggles the glasses over every bump and knocks the vision around. The only other solution is using contacts which I've done, but usually my eyes dry too much due to ventilation in the helmet.
Any recommendations for long-oval helmets that are affordable besides Icon? Even on closeout prices, Arai Signet-X are still half a thousand. Still waiting for HJC or Scorpion to make a long-oval shell. Even Shoei would be more affordable. Guess I'll have to settle for a very good helmet and Dremel out some EPS around the forehead? hahaha
Btw, I've enjoyed your podcasts. I'm sure you're very busy at Revzilla but are you releasing a new podcast soon?

Lifted_Above hey!! Thanks so much, I have been so lazy. I will be starting season 2 soon. For long ovals at less than 500, try bell! The SRT, the Stars, and the RS2 are great options.

Lifted_Above also forgot Shoei, but one size up, specifically the RFSR for $399

Hey you're welcome. Podcasting is a lot of work.
Thanks for the recommendations. I've tried Bell Star at the store and they aren't as immediately comfortable in overall fit around my face, jaw, ears, cheeks as an HJC or Shoei, but the shape is supposedly closer to my noggin'. I've had as many as 10 different helmets shipped to my address on a rotation from an in-state supplier with free shipping, and all of them got sent back due to my frustration with fitment ultimately. I've watched Revzilla videos on helmets for years, done research, know what I'm to expect and what to look for, and have used lidpicker.com as a guide to point me into the right direction. I've tried Signet-X at the stores and found it comfortable, but the eye port was restrictive in the downward gaze. I know Arai uses a wider chin bar for safety but I didn't find it acceptable (nor the cost acceptable). I've tried LS2, they fit like a saddle on a turtle. The two I haven't tried are AGV and Nexx. I've tried Shoei RF-SR and after about a half hour my forehead was starting to ache.

@@exothermal.sprocket More questions: 1/ what size do you fit the Signet? 2/ what size did you try the Shoei? 3/ what specific Star model did you try? Bell Star or Bell Race Star. Also, writing a reply to this issue is also only based on what you've written above, helmet fitment in writing is much harder than doing it in person. I hope these questions aren't annoying!

@@Gearchic Aw no worries, I understand perfectly what you mean and I agree.
I'm historically a true large in most every brand. XL just runs too loose in most helmets and L usually runs a bit snug but breaks in comfortably over some time, aside from fitting an oval peg in a round hole. Something I started noticing with trying various models is the difference in how the pads fit my jawline and around my ears, especially the strap anchor points and the strap angle under my jaw/chin. It's a lot more different than one would think, from model to model. I know cheek pad thickness can be swapped in various brands, depending on shell size. I learned about that too. The greater the shell sizes, the better the fit because manufacturers don't need to use liner pads to make up for the differences at the high end of one size or the low end of the next up-size.
Bell Star with MIPS in L.
      Signet-X in L.
      Shoei RF-SR in L.
I've tried 2 Icon models and bought an Airmada. The newer Airflite nearly shears my ears off to put it on. Very narrow opening.
The sizes were correct, but the pressure point showed up later. I made sure to wear the helmets at least 45-60 minutes around the house before making up my mind about things. I wish I wasn't such an outlier in body shapes. It's frustrating. AIrmada is cheap, loud, offers no neck role or chin curtain, has a retardedly frustrating shield latch pin. But it's cheap enough I don't feel like I wasted too much money.
Ironically enough I've enjoyed an HJC FG-17 as it fits like a glove around my face, but is NOT an oval fit shape. Had to trim EPS a little around forehead center to make it work. It's also not the most ventilated helmet, or the most aerodynamic. I have used HJC over the years and am quite impressed with their quality, fit, lens latches, etc. for the price. Yet no one makes long-oval. Tried RPHA helmets that are rated as "longer" according to lidpicker. Wasn't happy with jawline and strap issues around the ears. But I'm ready to pitch both helmets (FG-17 and Airmada) for one lid that ticks the boxes for under 500.
Oh, and I normally ride sporty naked bikes, with a slight forward lean. I dislike windscreens that send dirty buffeting around my neck and face. A good chin coverage is mandatory for noise reduction. I live in the upper-central USA where riding season is limited and colder weather riding is the only option for extended season.

IF you are having trouble getting your glasses to fit and you don't want to buy an expensive new helmet. Try buying a cheap pair of frames that are comfortable and just for riding. Get your lenses put into those and just bring them any time you go out on the bike. Safe riding.

Oh, Ha. They're really strong, I have terrible vision. They're extremely uncomfortable for me to ride in so I wear contacts EVERY time I ride.
