I think the argument "there was an attempt to play the ball" is given too much weight in some of these clips. At 9:36 the player reaches in from the away side of the ball and simply holds out his arm until the offensive player runs into him. In my mind he is "not legitimately attempting to directly play the ball within the spirit and intent of the rules". Also, even ruling out C1 there is still C3, "an unecessary contact in order to stop a transition", which maybe could apply here. Unfortunately the rules are a bit vague, but I found them to be sometimes interpreted strangely.
I totally agree with you on this one, he is not trying to make a correct defense he just grabs the body of the blue to stop the transition, which is C3 criteria.
