In the NHL you can question and argue with the referee’s all day as long as you don’t get personal, the referee’s will even give it back to you! In the NBA you question or argue and you get a technical or your gone. The NHL understands that the fans pay to see the players!
While not at all their responsibility, the players could take some of the power away from the refs by tanking the free throws. Just roll the ball out of bounds or something just as a show of support for a clearly bad call.

If these refs want to be involved in deciding the outcome of games with their selective calls, then they should be required to do a short presser with the media at the end of games and if there are questionable calls, they should have to explain why the call was made (perhaps the NBA home office could prepare video that supports a ref's call) and if they made a bad call, they should ADMIT they f'ed up - just like any player would if, for example, he missed free throws to win a game. Make them wear their work.
