    A refreshing change to be so honest and spontaneous with comments. .... I would much rather learn about faults in advance than during ownership and after all you guys drive many more vehicles than we ever will so despite some degree of subjectiveness it was one of the best on this channel and indeed you tube overall. It is after all a review not an advertisement and as such I think it's great you had the balance of pros and cons as you went along .It certainly encourages us to be more aware in our own pre purchase evaluation so that can only be a good thing...a very worthwhile watch,thanks again guys.

    Excellent review as always.
    Some people here do not like to see the bad points highlighted and I understand that.
    I personally like to see the weak points singled out.
    Buying a car is as rational as it is an act of passion sometimes.
    If you know beforehand the weak points and you still move forward to buy the car, then you are not being fooled, it is a choice you made.
    This is where I believe Autogefühl it is extremely useful, because it assists you in making a conscious choice by enlisting both the strong points and, most important for me, the weak ones. When I discover a good quality in a car it is a pleasant surprise. When I discover a fault, pleasure is nowhere in sight.
    Besides, I find this channel entertaining, quite so indeed.

    Nice review! So many complaints and downvotes; I wonder, would this video's stats be different if Thomas had said the same exact things? Probably. Come on people, enough of the fanboiism - AJ is the most articulate presenter by a long shot because his english is so good, and he seems like a charming dude. I'd grab a beer with him any day.

    Nice review, Autogefühl. I looked at this today in showroom and I was a little disappointed with the second row seats. Yes there is room but thighs feel unsupported when your feet are flat on the floor. I too noticed the small fixtures were not as tight as other manufacturers. So Autogefühl/Thomas, what would you take if you had to pick: LR Discovery 5, Audi SQ7, Volvo XC 90 or Mercedes GLE?? Thanks for your insights and for the great reviews!

    I (with 11 other drivers) was lucky enough to drive all JLR models supplied from the factory for a major sports event (to drive VIP’s around). Drove everything from the Discovery Sport, XJL, P400E RR, Velar, Discovery 5.....
    After driving all models and getting over the ‘WOW’ factor, the car I would choose (if reliability wasn’t a problem) would be this, the Discovery 5.
    Plenty of room (I have Grandchildren), decent trim level, handles ok for an SUV. Just a pity that reliability sucks. Every car in the supplied fleet had some ‘minor’ / intermittent electrical issue!

  • @peterelsner

    You keep complaining about the air suspension ?!? In your opinion the car "rolls" to much when cornering ?!? Sorry, but the problem is the guy behind the wheel, not the car. I have been driving the car in almost every thinkable condition, as well as on German Autobahn at high speeds. I can not confirm too much of "rolling" or so. I think your approach of curves is the problem, at least what I can see by watching your video. I think you enter the curve at a wrong angle, which causes you problems at the middle of the curve.

    Many viewers are saying that this review is too focused on negative elements about this car. Isn't this the point of a review? Aren't critics supposed to point out the bads? If he only praises the car, wouldn't that be an advertisement? I personnaly really enjoyed the review, I like to know about the details.

    Very fair review, showed the good and the not so good rather than just gush about how great the car is. Land Rover has a marketing department for that. Still must be one of most practical SUVs in the world right now.

  • @cathichang7782
    @cathichang7782 6 лет назад

    Just got this car 2018 and I wish he explained the electronic display little more. The rolling during cornering is something all true SUVs will do due to high setting to allow off roading. This raises the center of gravity of the car higher. It is much quieter car than what it was before. I like the older boxy esthetics of previous generations but we do more of highway driving than off roading. Therefore, it may have been a logical choice to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. He is not a Discovery fan but he does a great job reviewing all aspects of the car and yes we do drive by ourself or with one other person most of time so it would be a waste unless one has a huge family. It was really enjoyable and educational to watch this and I look forward to get more kicks out of this vehicle.

    I must say I really appreciate that you and Thomas always mention that there is no need for animal skin on car seats. I hope someday it will be heard by many carmakers like Mercedes Benz and Tesla already did, they propose good quality vegan leather options in their ranges. Also cloth eats should be available at any range level you choose even the highest end. And finally I hope this will increase public consciousness and demand for more creative and elegant cloth upholstery

    I saw one of these recently, Corris Grey with black pack and dynamic pack, it looked great. I remember when the Q7 was released it received a lot of negativity for it's looks. Audi even sacked the designer and it had to be delayed for a redesign. The Volvo is only 2 litre and it suffers from motorway overtaking, it moves like shit of a spade. I don't think there is one out right winner in this segment at the moment, they all have their good bad points. I agree with this reviewer, quality is an issue, I am always extra careful when I wash my wife's Evoque. Rattlely grill too.

    Good review. Been thinking about getting one of these and considering that the HSE Luxury TD6 is $126K in Australia it is pretty important that the finish inside the Disco is impeccable. If the buttons are not very responsive and door trims are rough it is an important item to mention. This seems like something that could become very annoying after the "honeymoon" period is over. As far as reliability of LR, my friend has had a few Discos. Changes them as soon as the warranty runs out. Never really had any problems with them. When something did happen the dealership fixed under warranty and he had a courtesy car. Overall, his LR is more reliable than my Jeep Grand Cherokee and on par with my wife's Lexus. Not bad if you ask me.

    a big chin, a big rear end and number plate positioning that makes it look like its been slapped from one side with a boxing glove. i understand the heritage of that positioning but it works better, imo, with the square format plate not the regular long one. good work AJ

    Nothing will ever look as good as the original Discovery and Discovery 2 shapes, but you can see the original discovery is still in there somewhere in terms of shape and design. I don't think the car is ugly, but they have softened it round the corners maybe too much compared to the previous Discovery's. Far as it being like a boat, probably an apt description. They are big cars and if you wiggle the steering yeah, it is going to shake. Any proper 4x4 will do that.

  • @vakhtangrekhviashvili3073

    The previous model - Disco LR4 was the best in class and the bestseller after it's release. It was the best family car available. They've made serious mistake by abandoning the classic shape (unlike the Jeep Wrangler). The new LR5 is a conceptual failure with minimal technological improvement and cosmetic disappointment. The rear end is really ugly, missing split trunk door is a disappointment. Missing command seating position is a pity. The car is as expensive as Merc GLS? What have you done Land Rover team?

    • @davidwhitehouse3243
      @davidwhitehouse3243 6 лет назад

      here in uk this disco starts at £47,000 which is over £2000 more than the very pretty range rover velar, i agree they have messed up big time with this 1, i own a LR4 but i wouldnt trade it for the LR5 no way

    Looks good. And one of the best off roaders for the money! If the haters are talking about reliability, lets not talk about Audi, VW and Benz which more than have their issues. The Velar is a thing of beauty, however with LR being the way they are, leasing will be just as bad as buying. Head for the Atlas instead

    I personally prefer the visual identity of old models which were all very distinguishable and different. This new model of Discovery looks like awkward Range Rover... Couple of years a go there was no chance you would mix Freelander, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover...

    • @johnpitcher8451
      @johnpitcher8451 7 лет назад +3

      Audi Q3/Q5/Q7, BMW X1/X3/X5, they all look the same but no one ever criticises them for having a close family look. Why is it OK for them but not Land Rover?

    • @PraviSlobodan
      @PraviSlobodan 7 лет назад

      John Pitcher I didn't say it is okay. Enough with this German vs British criticism... I don't like ALL consumer/corporate driven designs today. There are some good examples like Aston, Jaguar, Morgan, Peugeot, Kia... but most of the cars today show that manufacturers have no courage to step away and experiment with design so you get Audi and Bmw where you have the same exact face on a different body. Unfortunately this goes for LR now too... which never had the quality but at least had the design.

    Some facts that no-one in these car reviews mention. Compared to the previous model. 1) The load space is a lot SMALLER. With all seats folded it is 2400l vs 2550 for the old model. This is because the floor to ceiling measures 10cm less; You could get a bike upright in the old one if you took off the front wheel; You CANT in this 2) The old one has five full size comfortable seats in rows 2 and 3 with good access to row 3. In order to be able to fold the seats flat with electric motors they have ruined the comfort. The seats are very thinly padded and set way too low so that for a 1m80 adult your knees are up by your ears and to give the illusion of leg room the seat squabs are 5cm shorter in the new model. They are NOT ADULT SEATS and terribly uncomfortable. They are suitable only for children 3) Access to row 3 is terrible compared to the old model 4) the middle seat on row 2 is not a proper seat like in the old model; It is as hard as a plank of wood and only suitable for short journeys. Comfort has been sacrificed to make it into a fold down armrest.
    I regularly travel long distances with 5 or more adults in perfect comfort in my Disco 4. You couldn't in this car. It is designed and priced for wealthy people who live in urban environments who want to take the kids to school. Needless to say i won't be buying one

    If you really want a perspective on how this car performs then you need to hitch a 2-animal horsebox to it, load it with 3 teenagers and all the accoutrements needed for eventing, drive it for 90 miles, spend a day at a competition then drive it back again. The outcome? Flawless. Easily the most competent and comfortable vehicle in Europe for the job it was designed for.

    There are several other cars on the European market around the same size or bigger. I suggest you get somebody who likes big cars to test big cars - this guy makes it sound like this Discovery is the biggest thing on the road - I've driven it and it is perfectly fine in town, as long as you're used to driving big cars.

    • @patrickb827
      @patrickb827 7 лет назад

      Also, in the UK Discos are usually bought by active families, especially outside cities, so little chance of them beng driven with just one or two persons. As for all the power points, if you knew what it was like with 4 teenagers and their friends in the car, you would know how vital those powerpoints actually are today to keep the peace on a long journey!

    I like your channel a lot and I liked some of the reviews that this guy have done, but I don't think he was too inspired in this one: very focused on bad points (and not very important ones) and he could touch the screen and buttons more carefully :D I've tested this car, by the way, but it is just my opinion. Excellent channel, anyway! ;)

      Tomás García Martínez Built quality is important for a car that is over 100000 euro with the 300hp diesel and most options. That's a price point where you expect built quality. I couldn't live with this car. I would pick the XC90 in this price range it has a way better built quality or spend a little more on a Q7.

    • @Tomygarmar
      @Tomygarmar 7 лет назад +3

      I'm totally agree with you (my father owns a new S90 and the quality and assistant system tech are better , equal to the XC90), but I mean, if you are so strict with one model, you should be so strict with others (I don't remember being so strict in the Infiniti Q60 test, for example). However, as I said, I have tested this car and the quality in general is good. But just my opinion

    • @johnpitcher8451
      @johnpitcher8451 7 лет назад +6

      The XC90 and Q7 are very different cars inasmuch as they have zero off-roading capability. Hence unless you intend to go off road, the Discovery will be wasted on you. Having established that, the real competitors for the XC90/Q7 are the Mazda CX9, Hyundai SanteFe, Kia Sorento, and other jacked-up estate cars. However, if you want a real off-road vehicle that can drive on sanding mud on beaches and forest trails, then the Disco is the best of the bunch.

    • @Tomygarmar

      Agree with you too, no luxury-4x4 better than the Discovery

    I was looking forward to this review as I have one of these on order. But this isnt the best review by Autogefuhl. I really dont think we need to be told why we should or shouldnt buy the car. For me, I've got 4 kids and 2 dogs and need this size of car. I think it would have been better if the reviewer had been a family man/woman. I wish they could do the review again with Thomas.

    • @autogefuehl

      his point was that very often nowadays, huge cars are being used by single drivers, an understandable point. Of course it looks different with a family.

    • @thepurplesband
      @thepurplesband 7 лет назад

      Sure. But I havent come to this video to be lectured. Given it is a family car, I would have appreciated a review more based on that. Your sports car reviews (and I also own sports cars) dont say - "Its ridiculous that you can only get two people into this car and that its not able to carry 10"

    • @thepurplesband

    • @TChighbury
      @TChighbury 7 лет назад +19

      jaymulli - Yes but that's because the quality control of most german cars wouldn't have cleared the faults shown in the LR. The design of Jaguar and Land Rover is superb, but the finish is way behind most German and Japanese brands. Even in the Range Rover when you sit in it there are always aspects that make you think "This feels cheap".

    • @jaymulli
      @jaymulli 7 лет назад +6

      There are definitely some cheaper elements inside this car but that happens with all cars to save cost but when German cars are reviewed on this channel they tend to talk about the overall quality which is generally very good as is the case with German cars but this review seemed to pick fault with little details without telling you how it was overall whereas other reviews I have seen praise the quality of the cabin

    I am owning a LR Discovery 3 and I think this is a great car. In terms of built quality in the interior I thinks this car was on the same level as the German competitors. The down-sides of the car is of cause after no 8-9 years there are more often repairs also on things that are just coming after that time and some really unplanned. And this is at LR really expensive. Nevertheless I love this car very much and enjoy driving it very much especially if you think how practically this car is. With the new one I just miss a bit the rugged view of the LR3 and 4.

    One thing is this review puzzles me. Why is AJ reviewing the Discovery when he says he doesn't generally like big cars? It makes him kind of biased in my opinion.

  • @Phos9

    This new discovery is a collision between house styling cues and interior volume requirements not seen since the first generation cayenne. It's especially galling that a brand that makes only SUV s have this problem.
    The problem in my view is the shrunken greenhouse. The belt line is crazy high for a car like this, and they managed to also make it look front drive even with the front wheels so far forward. There's also a crazy amount of metal between the top of the rear tire and the bottom of the windows. That's the pointlessly high belt line at work again.
    And you can see the unfinished, unprotected rear muffler just standing behind the thing!

    Not sure about this review, some of the comments are not accurate and quite biased, he admits he doesn't like large cars. Also when he says about the size of the car if you look at it against the size of a BMW X5, although it is 16mm wider and 120mm higher, the BMW X5 is 57mm longer with a 108mm longer wheelbase.

    Pretty biased review. Thomas did a much better job. Here’s a tip. People watching this review are looking for a family SUV that is large enough to carry their stuff. Complaining about the size of the car is kinda stating the obvious.if you ever have kids you will know they need the USB outlets to charge their stuff.

    Complaining about the size is ridiculous. SUV’s in this segment have their eyes not only on the FAMILY market (this is a English school-run SUV) but also on the American market (See A7 & A8 et al.) where to justify the price one must produce a car that has a “presence”. My other gripe about this detailed review is the USB comments. Again this is a family car. One parent with two kids and a couple of their friends and suddenly the USB option is useful if not critical on long journeys. Otherwise, good detail as ever - reason I subscribe. Ps: my wife wants one because we have two girls (in baby chairs) and frequently also a grandparent... but your air suspension warning is useful. Maybe we’ll hold out to look to compare it to the 2021 (7 seat) Grand Jeep Cherokee which comes out in a few months.

    Whatcar true mpg tests say the 2L derv Disco 5 does just 26mpg. .. yes you read that right just 26mpg, the worst mismatch of claimed mpg to real mpg of any vehicle available today. So it's not just ugly it's also hopelessly inefficient.

    Haha AJ, at minute 25:00 you said that the car is too large for EU roads and at 31:30 I saw what you mean.
    But have you tried driving this in the United Kingdom? Haha that's the homeland of narrow roads in or out of the city (the ones that do not have dual carriageway)
    Other than that great review, though I would take the Range Rover Sport any time over this. Or the GLE.

    Just wanted to give the input you asked for. I hate the look of this vehicle. I love the look of the LR4 and I'm really not happy that they did away with the trademark split tailgate. As far as styling goes I think Land Rover consumers totally love the boxier look. The boxier look makes it more truck-like and less mini-van like. (I'm trying to avoid the terms masculine and feminine, but you get the idea. This look makes the car look neutered). This thing really just looks like an over-sized honda-pilot 2017 now and I think it's a huge mistake. So many dumb styling options here.

    I don't like this new Discovery look, especially the tail, it lost a lot of its character. People are complaining about the reviewer, however I think he pointed very valid points. You buy a luxury brand, you throw tons of money into it, but the you get these low quality buttons. It just spoils all the joy of buying such a car. In regard to other complains about weight, roll of air suspension, etc - I don't think you can really complain about laws of physics. You have to accept it with this car. It's like buying a tank and complaining its tracks are noisy, and it is hard to park in the city.

      I totally share his opinion. It's about you can build a Full-Size-SUV in a sporty way or in a boat-feeling-alike way. Its about what you prefer, but he states the general driving characteristic of that car. /Thomas

      The issue is that in Germany you have very smooth roads and off-roading is virtually non-existent, so your carmakers fit very stiff suspension that doesn't roll but transmits every bump into the cabin. In the rest of the world roads are far rougher and we do go off-road so the smoothness of the Disco air suspension is a delight. No one buys a Disco for sports-car handling and I applaud LR for opting for comfort over sportiness. Its one of the reasons why you never see a BMW/Audi/Merc on forest trails or beaches, they are very uncomfortable and simply can't cope with the rough stuff.

      Hi John
      you make some very good points. Perhaps i came off as being too harsh on the car.. i certainly like the disco.. in fact, im a big fan of the defender.. and LRs are amazing off-road, as we saw in the test in the mine.. build quality has come a long way, but still has some ways to go.. and the air suspension, size, and driving dynamics are certainly not going to please everyone..statistically, most off-roaders spend most of their time on road instead.. hence, on road manners in daily driving conditions are more important overall.. although a major USP of the disco is its off-road capability..
      We always try to arm our viewers with as much information and observations as we can with the limited time we get, so that they can make a more educated decision.. and we very much appreciate you sharing your first hand experience with owning and running this car.. stay tuned to autogefuehl and stay active in the community.

      I am on my 3rd Disco, and after 4 years ownership (from new) of my previous two I got 70% of the purchase price back. My current Disco is 3 years old, and if I sold it today I would get 80% of my purchase price back. Hence I can't agree with your depreciation story, I am amazed at how Discos hold their value. Maybe you should try selling yours privately instead of trading them in and giving the dealer all the profit. Similarly, I have had minimal issues in 11 years of Land Rover ownership and regularly take mine off road. Sure, maybe Toyotas are more reliable but they are so horrible to drive, and require 6 monthly servicing, I'll take a Land Rover any day.

      Now thqt's a totally outdated statement. They definitely were unreliable in the 90s and early 00s. But since they got away from Ford, LRs are much more relialble and getting better by the year. I'm on my 4th LR and, apart from a cracked windscreen, have never had one single problem. The important thing is to always service on time and look after them, then they'll look after you. Best family car ever!

    • @patrickb827
      @patrickb827 7 лет назад +2

      John, I'm on my 4th LR, had the same trouble-free experience. Totally agree, it's pub talk about old reliability problems that's completely out of date. Sure, a few unfortunate people have had problems and make a lot of noise about them, but the majority of people are delighted with their LRs. But then, haven't you heard of the recent abysmal reliability of Audis and Mercedes? Audi and BMW are right down the bottom of reliability tables both in the UK and the US, not to mention VW. They make great cars, but they're not problem free. In my experience, LRs hold their value really well in some countries. Maybe not in Germany, as they weren't big sellers there until recently... As for Discos, in the UK they might be [understated] status symbols for some members of the middle classes, but then we're looked down on by Range Rover drivers lol
