The end of a spanner is offset for a reason. The right way has a servo effect which helps keep the slot on the nut. The wrong way allows it to peel off the nut. When taking out the plug it was the wrong way round (mostly) and that is why it kept coming off. Putting plug back in had the spanner the right way right up until the very last tug when you reversed the spanner. Review footage to see what I mean. You can usually find a ring spanner that fits the square plug and that does make the job easier. There are of course spanners that fit the plugs and are worth looking for at jumbles for cheap. Allegro uses more oil because it has to do the gearbox as well just like the Mini.
Grease is less messy than spray glue & o d school I was an apprentice at the Standard when these were still being built. I know this one is in great hands with your attention to detail 👍🏻
That was a great video Alex 😊 Really enjoyed it all, but especially when you were setting/checking the tappet clearances. Who the heck tightened everything to an inch of its life??? Heavy handed whoever they were lol 😜 Thank you again for another great video 👍🏻😁
Hi Alex, Yay! The Triumph started! When you get the new plugs in it should be job done...a combination of patience and tenacity. 😁 A friend of mine has one of those which I have ridden in. They do motor well when running right. There is a company that is bringing retro design versions of the old names back. They have already introduced the Morris Minor 1000 and today I found they have now introduced the Triumph Spitfire Nd it looks very sleek and stylish. Your Herald video was a joy to watch, especially when undoing that sump plug...😁 Take care, Jon B. 🤓
@ghunt9146 Oh? Surely something should be done about that? Gross misrepresentation! Thank goodness for OUR Alex, we at least know she is real... Thanks for the tip off... Jon B. PS, your first name wouldn't be Gene would it? 😁
Hi Alex, the rule of 9 when doing tappets only applies to engines with a firing order of 1342, some older fords had a firing order of 1243 so the rule of 9 would not work 😊
A lot of French stuff is set ‘on the rock’, even with a 1-3-4-2 firing order. When cylinder 1’s valves are both rocking, adjust cylinder 4’s valve clearances. I thunk that’s how old Fords are set as well. Rule of nine only seems to be a BMC/Leyland thing in my experience
Anyone opening a book on how long Alex's garage stays tidy? PTFE tape, wonderful stuff. I never observes tappets being adjusted in such a classy manner. Another set of jobs well done..
I must have given you that oil filter remover! Wondered where it had gone lol. I still use my old strap remover. Works every time even on filters not greased before fitting. Screw driver bad idea only used by bodgers.
Those cordless ratchets are a blessing but.......I have heard and found that they are best used as a speedy tool for removing nuts and bolts that are already "broken back off" (ie use an ordinary ratchet or breaker bar to start) and shouldn't used to start on a tight fitting nut or bolt if you follow me. So break them loose first then "speed" them off. I went and irdered a milwaukee one and bugga me if lidl didn't have them a week later! so now I have two....oh well......😂 edit: shoulda watched another two minutes and you indicated that you knew this......I'll get me coat.....
Nice video Alex, I was going to mention the "rule of nine" but somebody has done so already. You want to try Wellseal for gaskets, especially on older cars. i think you may have trouble removing that oil filter next time!
Great to see you getting the Herald running properly! Fingers crossed re the plugs. Last video I thought you were dissatisfied with the running? What was the carb problem in the end?
Well done, watching you do things most people will not bother to do their selves, keep it up.
What a lovely cat! 🐈
Looks like the Triumph is getting some much needed attention. Really good explanation of what you are doing and why, and a good car to teach on

Good job well done. Will be good to see the Triumph running nicely.
Nice to see you & the Herald bonding 😉❤️

20:04 Oh! Rule of 9.Rule of 9! I did this the other week when we did the headgasket in the MGB
You must always fill the oil filter with oil or as much as it'll take as its side mounted on older vehicles
Doesn’t it just run back out when you tilt the filter over?
Im more of a classic triumph motorcycle guy, loved yer video , always good to see a woman getting stuck in! X
I've never been on a bike

Sorry jaybe, those vids are just Ai rubbish. The cars don't exist.

And now I know what the P in BP6ES stands for. I wondered. ;-) great video, enjoyed it very much.
How’s Lindon getting on after the workshop fire?
Has he still got his sierra?
He swapped the Sierra for the mustang. He seems ok. . . .but deep down he is not great in the mental health department 😕

Good to know. I always check the workshop manuals anyway 🙂

Give it a few weeks and you’ll love the Herald Alex 😁
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 I'm still waiting.
Great vid Alex, its running just a bit of tweaking now.
If only it were that simple 😆
I must have given you that oil filter remover! Wondered where it had gone lol. I still use my old strap remover. Works every time even on filters not greased before fitting. Screw driver bad idea only used by bodgers.
Also put a big elastic band around those filter remover legs will stop you having to try and stop it undoing while you turn the lever.
Great idea x thank you
I like the spanner extention where did you get that .
Not sure, my dad got it for me 😄

That 7/16 spanner looked like it was opening up when you booted it !
It's a rubbish spanner

Well it should work now
Go Alex x
It's Richard and am in my lounge 😂
Alex what is the diameter of the oil filter on the Herald? I really want one of those ratchet tools it would make things much easier on the wrists.
No idea! Small lol .like the Allegro one. The P6 is much fatter and my tool fits that too.
The 3 arms auto adjust to suit the size of the filter.
Cats have evolved without opposable thumbs so they can supervise rather than actually helping.
He's only got three feet anyway. Useless cat . Lol
🧙♂️
That was interesting?
Alex - was that, “I’ll get my ratchet” or, “this car is rat-shit!”? 😂😂
Just Shit. 😆😆😆
Have you bought that su carb yet 😆
Not spending my money on this car! It's up to the owner lol
You really don't like that car do you? 😃
😆😆
