Absolutely! Even with the background music dropping to the low, ominous tone, it's Joyce's groan in terror and her facial expression of her heart just sinking.
It was way creepier at the time I first watched it because we knew barely anything about the upside down. So my imagination was running when it blinked twice. Along with the creepy music it was definitely disturbing

Personally season 1 has a special charm because you don't know what's happening so you are figuring it out with the characters which makes it much scarier , I remember watching this scene and had no idea what was going on lol
I love this scene because it shows the strength and determination of a mother's love for her child. Joyce is doubted by everyone around her, including Jonathan, but she won't give up on what she believes to be true: Will is communicating with her. It's exactly how I know my mom would act and how I would feel towards my child. Winona Ryder's acting is so fierce and devoted in this scene and shows this side of parenthood: doing whatever it takes for your kids.

Every interaction Joyce has with Will in the first season gives me chills and almost makes me cry, like tears well up in my eyes and- ugh I just love stranger things 😫
@@xlantboi do you have to say this to every person! In one of the last episode when Joyce and Hopper are in the upside down, Joyce is walking in the house and the christmas lights turn on. So most likely that's what Will did
Golu Ka game yeah I agree with @vintage Virgo. With more info about that later on in the show they explain that it uses a lot of energy so that most likely is how when will touched or was around lights it would mean it flickered it turned on due to the large amount of energy used. And this goes for anything in the upside down. Demogorgon, Will, Hopper, Joyce etc. So yeah it’s not necessarily will or anyone in particular doing that it is the energy used.
Winona Ryder's performance was the factor in the show, that really pulled me into the story. I craved to see more scenes with her because her performance was just so good. Joyce, is one of best modern examples of a fantastically well written female character, right alongside the likes of Ellen Ripley, and Sarah Connor. Though she doesn't pick up a gun or flame thrower, you know Joyce would do anything to protect and defend those who she loves, using her maternal instincts as a mother as her greatest strengths.
dude, getting to see steve, robin, nancy and eddie interacting with the lights in the upside down was such an amazing moment, because of how much it reminded me of this perfect scene. they even brought back the "one blink for yes" track from the season 1 ost, such a full circle moment
Season one was the *BEST* season and no one can change my mind. I’m season one we didn’t know anything, and that just made it even more creepy and mysterious. It went from saving Will to saving the world in the next two seasons.
This is the most iconic thing in the show: The Christmas lights with the alphabet letters. Joyce used it to communicate with her son, Will, after he went missing while riding on his bike.
Before the show even aired, the main selling point of it for me was that I was gonna get to watch Winona Ryder act again lol. She’s the whole reason I got interested in the first place, loved her since Beetlejuice
This was one of the freakiest scenes in the show i think. What i loved, is that it really felt like the audience were discovering about these otherworldly threats along with the main characters, and had no idea at all what to do. Ill never forget the chills that the "run" gave
Bro Winona Ryders performance in S1 is sooo good and they portrayed a mother who's child is missing soo well and realistic season 1 will always have a special place on my heart ❤
The fact that we have a woman talking to Christmas lights and the lights just shine for each question while she sits inside of a cupboard-the idea without context and set up can look absurd, yet it’s executed so perfectly because of the acting, the plot, music, everything is done correctly. This show is amazing.
This scene was one of my favorites- it almost brought me to tears how far Joyce was taking things without caring what people thought of her- I felt like I was going crazy with her 😭 This episode was finally a confirmation that she wasn’t going insane
the moment when will spelled out RUN with the camera focus on each letter and rising intensity, was just phenomenal...sends chills down my spine everytime
This scene literally became a major flaw after Season 4, despite how chillingly iconic it is. According to Season 4, The Upside Down is frozen, still-standing in time when El opened the gate and Will went missing. While here Joyce uses the christmas lights along with alphabet markings to decode the message from Will, who's still lurking in that frozen time-space. No changes would've happened in Upside Down, including that christmas light wall setup, hehe.
I was thinking the same thing but technically Joyce could have told him which lights correspond to which letter. the paint would not have showed up you're right, but we know that light (or light sources rather) seem to transcend the time/dimension gap like in the Lite-Brite scene in S4. the whole thing is kinda flawed but as a plot hole i've seen worse. we didnt hear Joyce explaining it but that can be hand waved as unnecessary detail/part of the lights montage.
