- The CAPITAL of SAAREMAA - KURESSAARE we’re finally exploring the island after the pandemic QUARANTINE!
In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we explore Kuressaare the capital of Saaremaa which during the height of the pandemic in March was labeled the ’CORONA ISLAND’ after half of it’s population were thought to have contracted COVID19 and the island was completely shut off from the Estonian mainland. This island is beautiful and is the island that many Estonians head to for the summer and many own summer houses in Saaremaa. Whilst we were locked down in Tallinn during the pandemic we discussed the idea of travelling here one day when the island was open again, so during our summer tour how could we not go and check out this place?
Kuressaare is full of charm and beauty and it was clear to see that the island, just as we thought, had handled the pandemic incredibly well, everyone seemed happy, safe and perfectly back to normal much like the rest of Estonia. We spent the day wandering through Kuressaare looking in shops and we visited the market stalls which are full of lovingly made Estonian items for tourists and one very kind market vendor gave us a special little gift after Craig commented on how cool the item with a carving of the island of Saaremaa was. We stopped for lunch at Chameleon Cafe Lounge which is tucked just off the main centre of Kuressaare near to the multi coloured fountains. After lunch we take a little look inside the Kalev chocolate store full of handmade chocolates and marzipan! On our way towards the famous Kuressaare Castle we head over to the monument for the Inhabitants of Saaremaa who have lost their lives in the war of independence (1918-1920).

It's such a beautiful island. This might be one of my favorites so far :) All the shops and stores were lovely. I'd especially like the visit that chocolate shop :) Happy the community is doing better now.

Yes we heard that, crazy that there’s 2222. Estonia got all the little Baltic islands🙃
To be asolutely fair Latvia has got some river and lake islands, but true, no sea islands at all. Actually, back in the 1920s Latvia made a futile attempt at gaining the island of Ruhnu from Estonia, citing the fact that it was closer to the Latvian mainland than it was to Estonia's. Their true reason was an economical one - to gain access to the fish-rich waters surrounding the island. As a countermeasure Estonia held a referendum on the island, asking its people wether they would like to become subjects of Latvia. The result of the popular vote was a resounding No. That was the end of that.

@@TideKnotTravellers We got a summer home bc my grandpa lives there and we have a pretty small home but i have swings, trampoline and a barrel sauna. And my grandfather lives near people who own sheep and in March lambs were born and they are soooo cute! My favourites name is Fluffy. She likes getting pet and very friendly :D

We tried their beer, coffee and lemonade (they seem to all make their own delicious lemonade throughout Estonia)but don’t think we had wine whilst we were there in Saaremaa, in Tallinn we’ve had some great wine there! I was hoping you'd cover the bishop's castle in this video. There is a museum inside and you can easily spend a few hours in there. It's not as epic as the Royal Armories at Leeds but still worth visiting.

The best time to visit Kuressaare is during "merepäevad" (sea days) in August. Food, music, happy people! :-D

Oh really? That’s interesting. We tend to go to Rimi and Selver simply because we have the discount cards and they were the first supermarkets we found. Are Corona numbers quite high for you still?
@@TideKnotTravellers oops, I might be different in Estonia, I don't really know their supermarkets... But in Lithuania Rimi is one of the most pricey. Yes its getting really bad again more than 4k a day... We had our tests done today 😕 hope it's just a cold 😬
