The reason for the weirdness with the independence wars is because Paradox hasn't updated most non 1444 starts dates since EU4's release. Colonial nations weren't a thing in the game until the release of the first DLC. To simulate the independence wars Paradox just made them already independent for this start date.

Since I am spanish and we get taught this in school I can share some of the history behind this. Basically Spain was a french ally, the gave them military access to invade Portugal since they were a Brittish ally but Napoleon betrayed Spain and invaded it. Fernando VII and his father gave away the crown to Napoleon's brother in exchange for some palaces in France. The spanish didn´t like the french at all at this time and weren´t happy a french was ruling them (quite ironic taking into account the kings were from house Bourbon). In 1812 Spainhad its first constitution made by the Cortes of Cadiz (who were opposing the French). Fernando VII promised to mantain the constitution if he got back in power after the revolts. The Spanish independence war had a important rol on the Napoleonic defeat. It was also at this time that the colonies seized the opportunity to become independent. After Napoleon was defeated Fernando VII returned to power, and stablished an absolutist rule, thus, breaking his promise to mantain the constitution, and this is how he became the most hated king in spanish history (and is still like that today).
PD: Some of the things have more depth but it already is quite a long comment. Any corrections or additional context is welcome :)

In fact, Napoleon took the crown of Spain for his brother, it was to more easily apply the continental blockade because the King and the Prince of Spain did nothing and there were problems with the inheritance of the crown. Napoleon thought he had the support of the elites, which he partly did. But the very powerful clergy in Spain managed to stir up the people, they were afraid that the church would be muzzled like in France. They portrayed him as Satan's envoy.
In fact, these revolts didn't make much sense, there would have been only a minor control of Spain, Napoleon had no ambition to make a vassal state. In addition, these brothers paradoxically always tended to favor the countries they ruled rather than France, which had the gift of greatly annoying Napoleon. The King of Holland (another brother) had also been dismissed for this reason since he refused, among other things, to apply the continental blockade. To favor the economy of the Netherlands.
Going back to Napoleon, he said himself after all that, that it had been a mistake and if he had known he simply wouldn't have done it.

A cool historical note would be that term "guerrilla" has it's roots coming from this exact rebellion. Spanish called this guerilla, (guer=war, guerrilla=little war) , since usually they couldn't decisively fight against napoleons battalions in battlefield but they tired them down with cutting supply and picking skirmishes here and there until British and Portoguese armies gain stronger stance and French driven away for good.

Fernando VII was one of the biggest jerks in Spanish history. During the napoleonic ocupation he was imprisoned in Valençay, France and when the Cortes created the Constitution of 1812, they were expecting him to come back after the war to swear the Constitution, which would establish a constitutional monarchy and even saw him as a hero, calling him Fernando "the wished". But, since he wanted to be an absolutist monarch, instead of going to Madrid, he went to Valencia, where the monarchist were waiting for him and abolished the Constitution, destroying one of our earliest efforts of modernisation and democratisation and submerging Spain in almost 20 years of poverty, unrest, feudalism, illiteracy and sorrow, and many more to come. He was also one of the main reasons we lost our colonies.

He was so beloved that when he died, one of the villages he occupied erected a statue to that stands to this day. Think about it, someone enforcing the will of another nation was beloved enough to get a statue of his own!

Because of the drain on resources the fighting caused, Napoleon referred to the war as his "Spanish ulcer."

  • @khurtex9113
    @khurtex9113 Год назад +3

All starts with a petition from Napoleon for crossing through Spain to conquer Portugal. Fernando VII (Spanish Ruler) accepted, then the french started conquering spanish land instead Portugal's.
Obviusly, french army was way better and bigger than the spanish one at this period of time, so the french occupied the majority of Spain and Napoleon forced Fernando VII to abdicate in favor of his brother (Jose Bonaparte). The idea of being betrayed and controlled by french people didn't like to the majority of spanish people (except a small group of people, called "Afrancesados" here in Spain).
The result of this unrest was the start of something called "guerrillas" here in Spain (small groups of spanish peasants ambushing french armies and cutting off their suplies). During that years the french army lost their first battle (during the Napoleon period) and it was the start of the Independence War.

On top of that, it's GOOD to kill mercs, because regular troops have a reinforce cost, mercs DO NOT, if 90% of a merc army dies... they cost 9 times less money, AND they'll still recover, but unlike normal troups it costs them nothing to recover! So mercs should really be thrown at the enemy like trash, the more they die, the less you have to pay them

The general that was helping Zlewikk fight the pretenders in Spain, Field Marshal Suchet, was so highly regarded by Emperor Napoleon that he once stated: "If I had two generals like Suchet, I would have won the war in Spain."
When asked who his finest commander was after his final exile, he said "It is difficult for me to say, but it seems to me that it is Suchet."
Suchet was the Governor of Aragon during the Peninsular War, and was the only French commander establish and maintain order within his province and within his army. He forbade his troops from looting and pillaging, even when such actions were commonplace throughout the rest of French occupied Spain. After his death, a prayer service was held for him by the people of Aragon, so highly respected he was even there.

A bit late to the party but would you be interested in saving Hungary from the Ottomans in 1526 August?
    A bit of historical context:
Just before the battle of Mohács which left the nation in two (and a bit later three) pieces: Royal Hungary controlled by the Habsburgs (western Hungary and most of modern day Slovakia) and The Ottoman occupied territories (Central Hungary, in hungarian Hódoltság) (And a bit later on the principality of Transylvania as an Ottoman vassal). It is one of the biggest disasters in the history of Hungary as it is esentially Hungary's fall from grace, not long before it was the golden years under king Mathias Corvinus and after it Hungary became a subject of the Habsburgs up until 1918.
The hungarians had fought several independence wars against the Habsburgs if you are interested, such as between 1703 and 1711 (if I recall correctly) with Ferenc Rákóczy II as leader in an anti-Habsburg insurgency (although I am unsure if this can be found in EU 4).

Generally pretender rebels enforce independence on the country if the nation is in a PU, i. e. if Aragon was a PU under Castile and the pretender rebels enforced demands on Aragon, then Aragon would be free. I'm not sure if Spain was a PU or a direct subject of France in this save.

And jokes aside, it's literally either dealing with rebels or French. These rebels enforce in 18 months if you do not kill majority of them, so I personally prefered to deal with rebels->colonies->french and it's a matter of strategy, not a braidead challenge approach. Personally I think it's better to take care of all 3 instead of just 2, isnt it?
