    I think Cindy being all the popular fairytale girls in one and hiding the will in Pinocchio's nose were really clever ideas. It's just unfortunate that the movie doesn't know how to execute those ideas. Btw, I think Cindy kissing and crying on the wooden dwarves to restore them is a reference to The Frog Prince and Rapunzel, respectively. And it makes sense that wedding bells would turn them back to wood, because in German folklore, dwarves and trolls hate the sound of church bells and generally they turn to wood/stone in full sunlight.

    Cindy's outfit is white, and her mask is made of Snow....

    I find it hard to believe that common female fashion in whatever time this takes place consisted of off-shoulder crop tops and booty-enhancing skinny jeans. Neither were red, fitting, low-cut dresses.
    Wait, what if this movie actually takes place in more modern times, when those fashions WERE popular? What if this entire movie is just the Narrator having delusions due to dementia or something? It would explain why she gets Fairy Tales, which she claims to love, so mixed up. It's like Don Quixote, where he read so many Knight tales, and that combined with his wavering mental state due to his old age (50 was considered old then), he got confused with his books, and real life.
    So like what if this movie is all about the Narrator trying to find her recently deceased husband's will, his death alerting her that she, too, is inching closer to her end as well. She needs to find it in order for her granddaughter (probably) to inherit her belongings. However, her husband only told the Narrator where the will was. While the Riddle was blatantly obvious (it was in a Pinocchio doll's nose), the Narrator has trouble understanding, and gets that confused along with the Fairy Tales she read so often. It's a story about an aging woman who tries to find a will, whilst struggling with separating reality from fantasy. The will is found, as the Dwarves turning back into wood signify that the Narrators delusions are finally going away, as are her worries.
    *Or maybe it's just a shitty movie that doesn't know what it wants to be.*

    This movie was made in 1991, yet it looks like it was made way back in the 70s with its quality of animation. Not to mention, Yoram Gross was the same person who gave us the Dot series of films. One of the films I remember most fondly from my childhood being "Dot and the Bunny" which came out in 1983.

    One thing I noticed was the plotpoint of the Widow fooling Pinnochio into believing she was his mother. All the dwarves were carved out of wood blocks by Cindy's grandfather and they know that so how could Pinnochio even think he was born by a human? He's made of wood and strings! Either he's really stupid or the writers didn't think that one fully out.

    Little fact: Seven months after you originally uploaded this video, Yoram Gross (The Producer/Director/Writer of this movie) died.
    Additional fact: He was born in Poland and fled the Nazis. His family were actually on Oskar Schindler's List, but decided to escape on their own instead. They changed hiding places over 70 times.

  • @kathyh4610
    @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +38

    I love doing theories/AUs for horrible movies!
    Grandma is actually in the same nursing home as Grandpa mouse. She does have a grandaughter named Cindy who lives with her stepmother and stepsisters after her father died, but Cindy is kind of blowing their cruelty out of proportion because she was kind of spoiled, and is dealing with the death of her father.
    In reality they all do the same amount of chores, but her stepfamily doesn't have a chance to defend themselves, as stepmom kind of drops Cindy off at the nursing home every Saturday because she doesn't feel like her daughters (or her) really need to visit with Grandma now that her husband is dead. Stepmom also doesn't look that bad, if not maybe a little plain, but the last time Grandma saw her was at the funeral, where she was sort of a mess because she was still grieving.
    the "prince" stand in is actually the ex-boyfriend of one of her stepsisters. Cindy is pretty insistent that they "stole" this poor guy from her (even though he's actually a little too old for her) which hasn't helped her opinion of her "lazy" stepsisters, which is also probably the reason Grandma thinks they are also kinda ugly, as she only has what they looked like as 12 year olds and her grand daughter's word to go on.

    • @kathyh4610
      @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +8

      The scene where she is being chased around by stepmom is after grandma has escaped from the nursing home to try to "help" Cindy. Stepmom doesn't realize it's her at first, because she just sees someone standing in her kitchen that she doesn't recognize, but when the penny drops, she starts attacking and chasing her around because she thinks Grandma is dangerous because she probably hurt someone escaping

    • @kathyh4610
      @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +7

      after she is chased out of the house, stepmom realizes what actually just happened and everyone is worried because grandma is literally a little old lady with a very loose grip on reality who has run off into the woods in bad weather.
      Stepmom has called the cops and told everyone to stay inside because she's not entirely convinced that grandma isn't dangerous, and she doesn't want any of the kids getting hurt.
      The woods near their house are pretty dangerous and easy to get lost in, and Cindy is worried that (with grandma's state of mind being what it is) sending cops in after her is a great way to get the old lady to panic and hurt herself. Cindy's younger stepsister suggests that she should try looking herself, which leads to stepmom threatening to lock her in her room until the cops show up for her own safety.

    • @kathyh4610
      @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +7

      The shit about "only Pinocchio knows" is actually because (once Cindy catches up to her and finds her hanging out at grandpa's old hunting cabin/worksop) Grandma has somehow gotten it into her head that Stepmom has hidden/destroyed Grandpa's will that reveals that Cindy has inherited quite a bit of money (as well as the house and the land it's on) so that Stepmom can continue to live on the property and leach off her dead son's money. This of course is untrue, as Cindy tries to explain that everyone knows about the will, but the money and the house aren't actually hers until she turns 18, but Grandma doesn't seem to understand.
      Grandma knows that Grandpa was kind of paranoid, and thinks he hid a copy of his will inside a puppet, Cindy goes along with it because she thinks that as long as she's with grandma, she can make sure she doesn't hurt herself until the police arrive

    • @kathyh4610
      @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +6

      However Grandma gets separated from Cindy, and is taken by a concerned bystander to a hospital, who puts her in their mental health wing until she can be ID or the family/nursing homes shows up. Stepmom finds Cindy wandering around in the woods and grounds her.

    • @kathyh4610
      @kathyh4610 7 лет назад +7

      Cindy does eventually find the puppet in question, but the family goes on with life for months under the impression that grandma is dead because they couldn't find any trace of her. Eventually some of Grandpa's buddies are visiting a friend in the same ward grandma is in and recognize her, and they contact the family, who in turn contacts the nursing home. Grandma sees this as the dwarves her husband made saving her, because Grandpa used photos of them to base the dwarves off of.

    It took me a few watches to get this, during the riddle song she says "he carries the secret wherever he goes" (referring to Pinocchio). The secret refers to the will and seeing as how he carries the will in his nose, so he does technically "carry the will wherever he goes". I think that is the riddle part of it?

    • @edisonmichael6345
      @edisonmichael6345 5 лет назад +2

      Yeah, I mean, at first I didn't thought it even was a riddle at all: as Bobsheaux says, "Pinnochio knows" is not a riddle, is information, but than again, it IS a riddle because Pinochio does not know, so it is a play in words Pinnochio knows = Pinnochio's nose.
      It is kinda clever, even if a tad convoluted.

    Before the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio entered the story, I found Cindy's situation relatable. I know what it's like to live under an abusive 'guardian'. At 7:05. Right there. That's what I used to look like almost every night after getting a mouthful of condescending insults and shoved around by my jackass of a step father, and my enabling mother doing nothing but pouring herself another drink. I felt trapped and powerless. And despite having pretty normal features for a young lady, I was made to feel ugly, just like Cindy was. All I had to wear were oversized t-shirts and old jeans that hid my curves, and my hair was always cut into a short, shitty mushroom top against my will. And it's hard to have proper time-management skills when your low on energy. Insomnia and malnutrition caused by my abusive situation made me tired all the time.
    But I do highly disagree with the ending where all of Cindy's problems were solved by getting married to some guy (How old is she anyway? She looks 14 or 15.). When I turned 21, my biological father came to my rescue. When I was legally an adult, and my mom's stupid lawyers couldn't do anything anymore, my Dad was able to convince me to go with him and he got me set up in my own home and living the independent life I always wanted.

    Concerning Pinocchio, I'm not sure if you're referring to the original book or the Disney movie, but in the Disney movie at least, he doesn't find out about the lying-nose thing until AFTER he tries becoming an actor, and in Stromboli's puppet theatre, he just sings a song that (technically) really doesn't have any lies in it. Yoram Gross' animation is often called the Disney of Australia because he's great at what he does as director and producer, his wife Sandra is a executive producer and his son Guy is a music composer. Flying Bark Stan ftw. Doesn't help this video was uploaded a few months before he sadly passed away in his late 80s (1 day before the Blinky Bill movie in 2015). 15:18 If I remember correctly, in the original story of Pinocchio his nose didn't always grow, it was just a one-time thing that happened when he tried lying to the fairy in blue. Later adaptations took the scene and ran with it, making Pinocchio's nose growing a permanent thing that happened every single time he lied, and now that's what people remember. But in the original, Pinocchio should have been able to be an actor without any issues.

    First of all: the Riddler opening was hilarious.
    Second of all: on the one hand, as an aspiring actor, I personally believe there is a lot more to acting than "professional lying." On the other hand...yeah...Pinocchio's not an especially good liar NOR an especially good actor, and the nose does give it away, so... (shrugs) Search me how that plan would succeed.
    Third of all: I'm pretty sure skinny jeans weren't available in medieval times, or whatever "ye olde time era" this bloody film is supposed to take place in...heck, I don't think even SHREK had characters in such modern clothing...
    This is all.

    I also noticed how it's hard to tell when it takes place, but I think it's probably what stands out most in this movie. I know it's just an animated kids movie, based on multiple fairy tales told by a woman who we see mixing them, so I can see how something like that can happen, but all these stories where supposedly set around the same time period - say the 1500's or 1600's. Here, the fashion and style is all over the place; to put it bluntly, Phillip looks like someone you expect to be in those stories, widow and her daughters are in early 20th century attire, and don't tell me you seen a woman dressed like Cindy prior to the 1980's.
