    Could somebody give me a good reason why the RN/MOD got rid of the much better, longer ranged and harder hitting 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS and replaced it with the 20mm Phalanx CIWS ?
    God I hope it was not another Bloody money issue !!!

      Ronnie Farnsworth It's probably down to changing the 'envelope' of cover that each warship or group of warships provide, now that the type 45 carries the Sea Viper and Sea Ceptor missiles which are far superior to the Sea Dart and Sea Wolf combination, a 30mm CIWS is more than likely deemed unnecessary.
      Ironic being as the Royal Navy bought the 30mm Goalkeeper straight after the Falklands War, to provide adequate anti-air firepower for ships that were fitted with air defence systems that frequently failed those that they were designed to protect!

      @@simon26westlands It's two bad really, especially if our RN has to "Really" fight in the Gulf or the South China Sea in the future !!!
      Look at the USN, I know that money is never really a issue for them, and weather it's a CBG or ARG they always have 1 CG, 3 or 4 DDG and all the great weapons they have .....they still protect their major ships CVN, LHD, LHA, LPD & LSD with ESSM, RAM, 20mm CIWS three of these classes have all three in multiples !!! They really protect their Ships, Sailors & Marines what ever the costs !! Escorts can get hit and knocked out, they have layers of defense, I wish the RN did.

    Why does a ship need to be towed to leave a port or bay?

    • @WarshipTV
      @WarshipTV  4 года назад +2

      Because out of Devonport there are SEVEN treacherous currents and it is a very shallow and narrow channel. At high tide on a ship like HMS Albion I am told there is just 6 feet (just under 2 metres) between the bottom of the keel and the river bed!! In fact both HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal both grounded on this stretch of river!

      Oh, and plus HMS Albion is 22,000 tons!

      Warship TV Many years ago HMS Eagle apparently, lost one of her 4 props on entering the naval base on this stretch of water. Further upstream the little ferry that crosses the river on chains would have to wait each side of the crossing to give the chain chance to sink low enough for the ships to pass over it.

      At Devil's Point apparently Don, and I am told allegedly that the Captain involved at the time had the unfortunate initials I.G.W which was jokingly referred to as "I Ground Warships" lol. However there will be a lot more to it than that ofcourse!
