Thank you Abhi for your devotion to our lifestyle. I’m not sure why, but unlike manufacture reps I can more easily grasp the your convenience of the tire tech.
Thank you very much mate, I think that’s exactly why I do these videos , it’s more about cutting the jargon out and simplifying it for the masses , I am no rider coach or a out and out rapid rider but I do endurance and I go through different phases of the tire from optimum grip to consistent grip to when the tire starts to slide so I find it easy to convert that feel into words :)
Thanks for the appreciation
I have the Metzeler TD tires and I love them if I was really fast I may want something better but they work great.... and I love the fact that you can switch the rear tire. Thanks for these videos they help a lot.
No problem , I am glad they are great tyres for you. I'll be honest, I used them for 3 years in a row and I never had any complaints.
You can switch the rear of any brand. Folks are doing it for years and years on track without problems
@@lillnemo1 I know mate, I agree, that’s why I didn’t discuss it in the video , I know everyone does it but I can’t promote stuff which isn’t recommended by manufacturers on a public forum like RUclips
Finally tried the td's. No warmers on a cold day here in Qld and they were brilliant. Knocked 5 seconds off my Pb within 5 sessions. They inspired confidence compared to the metzeler m9s I had on before. Don't think I'll bother with warmers just yet. Happy to do a warm up lap or 2 until I get quick enough to join the fast group when my warm-up lap may screw with other riders.
That’s absolutely brilliant
So glad it all worked out for you so brilliantly… love the comment
I personally only used them once without warmers but I am glad they warmed up so quick for you and gave you brilliant laptimes . Thanks for the constructive comment
Abhi another cracking VLOG !! so helpful as I’ve bought the Metz for Spain in a few weeks !!
Thank you mate , I am very curious, please do tell me which track , how they performed and what your pressures were and the ambient temperatures there.
@@ChasingTenths I’m off to cartagena on the 23rd so I’ll definitely let you know my thoughts as it’s the first time of used these 👍
@@superbikejunky4671 fantastic. Great track plenty of bends , a bit abrasive
Have a lovely time
@ChasingTenths Hi Abhi, thanks for another useful video.
On your final point about 55/60/65 'widths' I'm sure that you would want to be accurate. So 180, 190, 200 is the tyre width, and 55/60/65 is the aspect ratio. So three different aspect ratios in the same 200 width means that they have different heights so aspect ratios.
The height is important for your setup both suspension, ground clearance and rear swing-arm length, so steering geometry.
The height also deliberately affects the profile of the tyres so how much area is available for side grip. The 55 aspect will be closer to a round arc which makes it very consistent with grip from upright to fully lent over. The 65 will offer more side grip with a larger area at the side so not consistent but more suitable for racers who want to get off the corners with early throttle for example. The 60 somewhere in between.
Not everyone will be comfortable with the 65 that is willing to drop into the turn to full lean, so may prefer the 55 that doesn't drop in rather rolls in consistently. Speed of steering inputs and results are a personal choice.
Well that's my 10c so feel free to correct any errors..
You are superbly accurate and this is really well written .. when I mentioned width in the video verbally I think I remember putting star correct in worded edits *aspect ratio, so yes definitely 👍🏽 I meant aspect ratio
But you have explained that really well
I have plans to make a Separate video on aspect ratio as I feel I left the subject here a bit unfinished
Thank you ever so much
@@ChasingTenths Thank you, and I look forward to that.
I would offer to help but believe you have more knowledgeable contacts in the paddock including the manufacturers technicians themselves. Presumably they would be delighted to help to put their insights and advantages in plain sight.

Lol cheers matey , I guess I’ll take that as a compliment ;)
Interesting. I am running SC2 and I have always reversed rear without problem or diminished grip. On Portimao blistering tyre appears on the left side. A local guy told me to close preload on the shock and it healed my tyre. On the second set with more preload there was no blistering at all.
I totally understand, I have heard many people reversing a Pirelli but official Pirelli fitters don’t do it in U.K.
and I was not going to promote the same on a public forum
I have come across many racers who do it though :)
Nice video again.
I use Pirelli on my TUONO, Metzeler on my Multistrada
Both lovely choices , I used M9RR on a road bike 4 years ago , amazing tyre that was but for fast road riding I loved the Metzeler Racetec K3 RR
Great vid!
@Happy_2_Wheels thank you very much
Really nice video with very useful info
Thank you very much mate
Great videos around the tyres and various compounds! I always felt like the tds felt a bit wooden and dead on heavy trail braking. Curious how the sc3s compare 👍
Interesting point that , the front TD is definitely a bit on the hard side , less deflection , very firm but works well on low to medium temperatures. it doesn't move around in braking, I have always used Pirelli SC1 slick in the front and Metzeler TD in the rear for trackdays and Pirelli front and back for racing
@@ChasingTenths yeah I think that's what it is for me. The sc has that bit more flex in the sidewall which my brain translates into "feel" while the td stays quite firm. Very much a personal choice sort of thing but I like feeling how much pressure is running through the front so I can ease off if needed. The tds never failed me grip wise but I always got the impression that if they did it would be quickly and without much warning 🙈
@@SimonTheSquid hahaha true , that’s why for my fronts I use the SC1 slick and rear TD slick.. I always thought have a more softer and aggressive race front slick is safer :)
Hi Abhi ,I found your channel recently and it is very good channel, I watch a lot of your videos already and I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers.Definitely one of my favorites channels .Now what is your opinion on Michelin tires if you ever used them,so far I only used Michelin and now this season I am planning on switching to Pirelli to check it out?
Thanks very much Vlad , apologies for coming back to you a bit late, I’ll be honest , I have never made a video on Michelin as I never tried them , their road rubber is amazing though , however all the friends I have who have tried Michelin speak very highly of them also in our championship we only are allowed Pirelli or Metzeler… I’ll be honest if you have the funds to buy Pirelli slicks then it’s the best one out there, they get a lot of data from British Superstock , British superbikes and world super bikes which trickles down to their slicks which us mortals use. On the otherside Michelin is in motogp and motogp tires are super specialised , design with a different blue print in mind . So I reckon , Pirelli is better from a theoretical point of view
@@ChasingTenths No problem Abhi, for second I was thinking that you don’t like me (joke 😂),yea I switch to Pirelli to try them so we will see ,a lot of people use them here in California and I should be fine too especially for my trac lap times 😆, thank you for response and keep up good work 👍

Abhi you have long experience with the Metzeler we can really trust on you. I have TD's in my garage im gonna test them this year I may use them in Cremona Circuit with my friends as they want to start the season there. Curious to feel how they behave.👍
Thanks very much mate, I think I was one of the first ones to try the Metzeler TD in the uk and first one to really trust them and use them 3 years in a row. They have never let me down and kept my tyres cost low and lasted very well. Let me know how you get on with them, I am curious. And thank you for the kind words :)
@@ChasingTenths several years later have you got practical data around the swingarm vibration damper? how is your experience in reality with the damper. Great video as always, thank you
@@FirstLast-tx3yj so, I don’t really have data in the form of something measurable with a device as such but from a personal point of view, I can confirm , I had 6 times where I nearly highsided but only high sided once (but I take that with a pinch of salt as bike as electronics too but older version), I have much less tire wear , consistent wear and less movement of bike coming out of the corner
So it’s absolutely ok
But it’s so hard to really quantify the benefits of that device or pin point the exact benefits , but these were my before and after observations
@@ChasingTenths i ride a k8 gsxr and dont have any electronic intervention so help in tire wear is a really good indicator. I will be willing to try it to see how it helps me because there are too many things going on we cannot pipoint which variable is responsible. so tire wear is a genuinely good objective indicator. cheers and ride safely
@@FirstLast-tx3yj ahh ok , understandable that’s nicely worded :)
What is your preferred rear size and aspect ratio? I just bought a 2016 rsv4 rf yesterday for track duty, stock suspension. I forgot to look at the tire sizes and it comes later this week. A buddy says that 200/60 is the best size and profile, I don't know what suits the bike best however? I believe the bike comes with a 190 rear tire.
@@MarinaraTrackDays if you have a 2016 RSV4 rf. First of all congratulations you just bought the best Bike ever, I am biased of course I’m secondly your bike comes with a 200 rear tire and the best balance between Road And Race aspect ratio is it 200/60 Even a 200/55 is pretty good if you are mainly going to do Road Miles , if majority of your riding is going to be on the race track then 200/60 is a better option..
@@ChasingTenths Yeah I bought it as a dedicated track bike. I was using an older Ducati Hypermotard, definitely not a track oriented but it was great fun. I was looking at the Panigale V4s for a while, I just couldn't justify the prices. So I found a 2016 rsv4 rf with 4067 miles in great shape from a guy in New Hampshire (USA). 200/60 was the idea, thanks for the feedback! Can't wait to get it out next season. Not many people make content with these bikes, very glad I found your channel.
@@MarinaraTrackDays thanks very much for the kind words mate.. honestly, I have ridden the Ducati v4 , this Aprilia is so easy to handle , the front of the bike is extremely planted even when you push it beyond certain limits .. and don’t worry about chasing power . Your bike will make around 175 bhp to 182 bhp on the back wheel, and that’s plenty as you will make plenty of time up under braking and mid corner
@@ChasingTenths awesome, the bike should suit my strong points then. A lot of that I got through your videos, if I hadn’t found your channel I may not have ended up with this bike. I wanted something that wasn’t ballistic and un-ridable. 175-180 hp is plenty enough for me at the current moment. I like to carry high entry speeds (high compared to other novice/intermediate riders in my groups at track days) and leave it late on the brakes. I’m new to the track so I’m still learning, but I’d consider myself on the faster end for my skill level. You’ve been an excellent reference. A bike that was easy to ride with good stability was absolutely the #1 priority.
@@MarinaraTrackDays I am really happy for you honestly and so glad you found my channel useful .. I need to make a few more videos then lol
Just make sure valve clearances and service intervals are met according to the TRACK miles schedule on the manual and the bike will pay you dividends
Great video Abhi.
I’m a huge Metzeler fanboi, have been since the 80’s 😊
Metzeler are brilliant, so sensibly priced and so so good.. thanks for the appreciation:)
As always, encyclopaedic 👌
Thanks mate, knowledge only comes from trying constantly :)
@@ChasingTenths Yes indeed! If you don't mind, a quick question: a friend of mine was asking about the difference in side to side transition. How different was the profile, and the resultant side side transition/turn in "fall" rate for you?
@@greyanaroth the Pirelli is much more aggressive side to side transition then metzelerTD
@@ChasingTenths thank you friend. I, too, suspected as much.
How do these tyres compare to treaded supercorsa? All comparisons are made to slicks
It was a slicks comparison as it was a slick oriented video between two compounds from two companies.
Supercorsa’s profile is very different to metzeler or sc3 Pirelli slick , supercorsa profile has less aggressive side profile, slicks always have more side contact patch but supercorsa is an amazing tyre for anyone who isn’t ready to move to slicks. Or wants to stick with road rubber . Supercorsas warm up very quick, especially the SP Supercorsa, the SC supercorsa is more track orientated , take a lap longer to warm up well, the SP supercorsa lasts really long and very versatile tyre. There’s a different between SP and SC supercorsa, I will do a dedicated video comparing metzeler slicks with supercorsa and sp and sc too in a week
What about Metzeler K3? Did you try it?
@@mojcaa.9647 yes, absolutely excellent tire
No issues with it
Will do a video soon
Have you tried a sc1 cut slick front and a td rear slick combo
yes, I have , its a brilliant combo , never had an issue, it's all about having the right pressures on the right day and the right compound for the right ambient and track temperatures. :)
Have you come across riders with irregular tire wear, and still performed well ?
Absolutely, to be honest , you only know about irregular wear when you come into the pits/garage lol , until then you are on track giving it everything ;)..... I just hate when a ridge starts to build on the rear because then your contact patch is reduced on the side.
I been running dunlop slicks for trackdays on my superduke. Same tire the moto america series runs. With good results....does pirelli have the stiff sidewall like dunlops?
Pirelli and Metzeler are softer than Dunlop and Bridgestone, but not less effective. It's mostly a matter of taste, just like sugar in coffee ;)
Hi Daryl , Pirelli Metzeler are softer , Dunlops definitely have more life , more durable . In my endurance racing series we can only use Pirelli or Metzeler
Hi Daryl , Pirelli Metzeler are softer , Dunlops definitely have more life , more durable . In my endurance racing series we can only use Pirelli or Metzeler
@@Tacgibs nicely worded :)
@Chasing Tenths the superduke kills rear tires.. dunlops have been best at tire life...i may try the metzeler td this season....
I think TD/sc3 are decent for people beginning to try slicks. Move to Sc1 Front and Sc2 Rear later. For 1000cc bikes goes on the budget. Sc2 can be done in a day or so . Always use warmers, even on TD tires. Too many 1st lap heros drop their bikes, specially front wash out.
@@adzventurerider very well said that
Hi Abhi. Looks like in the US we don't have that many retailers for Metzler TD. This means I need to buy a few sets at a time to saving on shipping. What is the Front to Rear ratio wear for this tire? 1 to 1 or 3 to 5?
Yes mate, I totally understand, I have a few people from the U.S saying the same thing
The front lasts really really long
Too long infact
I gauge it by track time rather than wear
Cause the damn tire keeps lasting long
So I would say front and back
Maximum 6 days on track
You normally have the best out of the tire by then anyways
So base on your experience, how many rears do you burn through for a front? Or do you prefer to just change them together so you get fresh rubbers to be consistent?@gTenths
@@HangOnHangOff SC1 Pirelli slick is heat cycle sensitive so I don’t use it for more that 3 Trackdays no matter how much grip is left on it .. SC3 rear can take more heat cycles so that’s also 3 trackdays maximum as that starts to go off anyways , metzeler TD can last many many trackdays but I wouldn’t use it for more than 4 days
It’s a reasonably priced tires
It’s worth changing it after 4 days when if the grip is there
But you can reserve the rear too
Change the sides
Abhi, after changing my own tyres recently and upgrading some wheels to lightweight Magnesium Marchesini, a question came to mind. It seems to me that the different tyre brands can weigh quite a lot different to each other... considering this mass is on the outside of the wheel, that's where most of the gyroscopic effect is. What's you opinion on this, and do you think you'll make another video like you did for the other bits you weighed off your bikes? Thanks for the great content.
you know I often wondered to make a video on various tyres in terms of their weights as in unsprung mass but then I thought if a particular tyre turns out to be lighter than others , a lot of people might just choose that to save weight as a lot of people are very bothered about weight. But if that happens they might ignore many other factors like conditions and temperatures and that can lead to a crash... I think racing tyres or slicks for trackdays should be chosen on what weather conditions are doing to be , otherwise trackday road tyres like SUPERCORSA SP is great for everything . but yes, I deliberately didnt do a video. Tyres are the most important aspect along with suspension and brakes and if people started choosing tyres just for weight , they might end up in big trouble , I hope that made sense matey
@@ChasingTenths Absolutely makes sense, it never crossed my mind. For me I'd only pick one tyre over another based on weight if the two were similar purpose, like S22s vs Rosso IV, or maybe the Metz TD vs Pirelli SC3? 😁Thanks mate.
@@TheOriginalCoda good point that actually
I agree
I generally do 4 trackdays a year. Just picked up an S1000rr after riding a Duke 690 for 2 seasons so still getting a feel for it, I'd say I'm a slow inters pace. Do you think a single set of TD's would see me through the season? Or would I be better off going for something like Supercorsa SP's?
PS - I don't run tyre warmers.
Hey Chris, if the bike is road and track then definitely stick with Supercorsa SP. Are we mortals better than a Supoercorsa SP, no way , absolutely not. They warm up quick, they don't have a super aggressive profile like a Slick and are consistent too. As long as your pressures are ok , you will be absolutely fine with those SP. I used them a lot before moving on to the slicks. They are fantastic, 100 percent stick with Supercosa SP Chris
Thanks Abhi, as I suspected 👍 Bring on Mallory in April! 😁
@@everclear1984 brilliant stuff, I absolutely love Mallory, one of my all time favourite tracks to practice relentlessly , as its such a short lap full of quirky bits

hahaha, thats proper funny
I run TD’s on my s1000rr turns rotation after every two track days, got around 6days from it, what life you get out for yours? And one of the Metz rep suggested to run 75degrees on them as higher temperature can overcook the compound, have you heard anything like that?
Hey Abbin, I also get 5 to 7 days out of it

@@ChasingTenths eveey track is different so I cannot go by the trackdays. Thats why i ask id i should clear out the wear marks or change before. If you are not sure with the answer its okay.
@@zhuliyanzhekov9706 5 days was a generic average to give you an idea so you know roughly about the amount of heat cycles , i am aware every track is different but mainly what’s more important is that how many sessions you put the warmers on and off the tyres and the ambient temps and track temps of the track … it’s a broader subject but as a trackday enthusiast 5 days was an average , for example:
in the U.K. my front has last 7 days and rear 5 days but in Spain it lasted 3 days only front and back .. so it’s all about heat cycles and ambient temperatures .. I write down the amount of heat cycles the tire has been through on the tire with a chalk … 5 days is a good average for that particular tire compound .

Appreciate going for 1 size for the TD slick keeps those prices down.
Thats true , the whole point of the TD is to attract new slick riders in and they kept a very modular manufacturing approach , kept it simple , but I have heard that more aspect ratios will be available , at least a 60 soon
Track days are expensive, tyres too. So the td slick wins on cost alone and I'm not at the pointy end so it'll be plenty fast enough for me.
