Argentinian here, The proposal is not technically "dollarization" but an open currency market, but in the reality most argentinians will choose dollars
Don't forget to mention that Argentina, prior to its mismanagement and hyperinflation, was a high-income oil-producing country with a stable Peso. Their hyper-government of the socialist variety failed in every imaginable way.

I'm from Uruguay but I lived in Argentina for many years, also due to my job I've been in every country in Latin America. The reality is that the dollar is the currency of choice in most of the countries in LATAM (except Brazil) for large items (cars, houses, etc.). Everyone save money in usd dollars and this is because we had to endure many, many hyperinflations in our history, so people know better. The usd dollar is not going anywhere, at least in the foreseeable future.

This is a VERY positive development for the world. Anytime a communist government is taken down and replaced with capitalism, it’s a victory for the people of that country. Rapid economic development can follow if they manage the transition to the dollar effectively.

@uria702 As with any populist, I seriously doubt you will see any kind of Dollarization in Argentina. He already backpedalled on the Dollarization and the Central Bank nonsense. Milei used incendiary rhetoric to win elections knowing full well once in power he will have to deal with parliament and hawkish lawyers that will not allow the implementation of such policies. Milei's cabinet picks look more like Macri, Menem or De La Rua than anything else. He back pedalled the Central back nonsense he ran on along with backpedalling on what he said about the Pope and has now asked him for forgiveness and extended an olive branch and an invitation.
This is a huge win for the whole world, history will be talking about this moment!

Libertarianism is as viable as Communism. It's not a real political system. It's an ideal that is no better than Communism where the powerful government rules. In pure free market Libertarianism, the powerful super rich rule. Which is already pretty much what we have today in America. So if you like 90% of society without education and poor, then you'll like where Argentina ends up.

In reality, Milei proposes free competition of currencies, but we Argentinians prefer the dollar.
Keep in mind gentlemen, back in 1999-2002 the Argentinian peso was 1:1 with the US dollar.

It was actually the 1992/2001 period.
Actually, it was 1991-2001.... which led to the crash of Dec2001. Argentine goods had become too expensive, same as tourism. These "dollarization" and heavy privatization measures are the exact same one that Menem did after the hyper-inflation of the late 80s.

Argentina has a very respectful quantity of oil and gas, which is now State Owned. Milei is gonna privatize those State Owned Companies, that’s why you see Wall Street went crazy after Milei won. As an example, Repsol was the owner of YPF (State Owned). Now Argentina found Vaca Muerta which is the 2nd largest shale of natural gas in the world, and also has the 4th biggest oil reserve in the world. So turning the official currency to a Dollar US is gonna be great for them.

Ecuador went through this in 2000. It isn't a very easy transition. Argentineans are used to paying hundreds of pesos for the value of $1USD. It is difficult mentally to transition into learning to pay with coins for their goods and services. There also a difficult transition of calculating a fair value for goods and services based on the conversion of their wages to the USD. When items were hundreds or even thousands of pesos, $1USD sounds incredibly cheap but it actually isn't given the current value of the peso. I hope it stabilizes their economy but don't expect it to cure inflation woes overnight.
Never been to Argentina. Don’t know anything about Argentina. Except for Messi. Lol but I’m happy for them. Any country that has a president that cares about its people and truly wants to clean up the mess is a good thing. I hope they can make a comeback and get back on track economically.
I live in Argentina and I want to give you a little glimpse of what the rate of inflation means to us. Our economy is based on the US dollar, so we constantly calculate the value of the peso over the dollar. In July, 1 dollar was equal to 500 pesos. In October 1 dollar was equal to 1050 pesos and our income stayed the same. This is why majority of the people voted for a change. I´m sick of socialism and populism, but the sad thing is that nearly all of the goverments that ruled here were socialists and ruined a lot of people´s brains, and they live of corruption so they will always be against someone like Milei, they´re already threatening of protesting and marching, and the sindicates are also threatening of stopping production and stuff. It´ll be rough but I trully believe that is the right way.

Just take in to account that what Milei said is that he will keep the currency market open, meaning any currency will be welcomed and most likely the dollar will prevail, this of course if the dollar can maintain its value.
That also means that lacks of dollars in the future can be solved by just using other currency, as it was said , you can use whatever currency as long as the person who you are buying a product from accepts it

I don’t know anything about Argentinian politics besides Messi Messi Messi Messi, but if a country ruins its credit and starts using a different credit line that is virtually “cash only” then that country is headed for a huge depression.

Actually, dollarization is a means to close the central bank... from then it will be free choice of currency. Mostly argentinians have already choose the USD but industries will be free to choose the most convenient (for example, agriculture may choose BRL to fight against Brazil devaluations like happened in the 90s, everyone will be free to choose the best fit for their business)

I´m Argentine and we save in dollars if we can, because it´s annually less devalued than the peso. As far as I know Javier Milei talks about "a basket of currencies" to choose for the Argentine ppl and since the American dollar is very popular it will probably be the one to be chosen. Even though Javier didn´t convince me very much, I voted for him as I didn´t want Mr. Massa to win. I think Javier is more trustworthy. I will totally believe in the candidate who can succeed in lowering the inflation rate.

Ecuador went to the US Dollar back in 2000. Worked out well compared to where they were at . Panama did over a 100 years ago. Where it has worked even better.

Clarification: Milei’s proposal isn’t dollarization but “coin competition”. He will use the dollar to liquidate the state debt in pesos, but people would be able to use whatever they want for private transactions.
