    Who else edits their photos on the iPad? 🙋🏻‍♂️

      I do. 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ I love that I can take it with me anywhere I go. It fits perfect on my book bag when I’m on the way to do shoots and want to edit at least one to post it. And I also do a lot of behind the scenes videos for Instagram. Love that I can edit right away on my iPad.

      On my desktop, I manage photos with a lightroom catalog per event, per year. Each event has an ingest, output and catalog photos. I use the os to organize. On a laptop, I can replicate the same system, exchanging only the catalog.
      How do I do the same on an iPad? Is there a catalog file that I can transfer from iPad to desktop? What’s the point of being so fast on the iPad if it disrupts a reliable system that I’ve used for 15 years?
      The iPad is only good for my Fuji’s ooc jpgs that need a basic tweak and boardering and posting to Instagram. Then I copy the edited jpgs to my main rig as ooc jpg.
      There is no workflow on the iPad, it’s a stand alone system that has not been thought out.
      Any “iPad photo workflow” tips or video are glib. There is no long term strategy with iPad photo editing. In fact, starting a “workflow” on an iPad is dangerous as a noobie because it teaches nothing about organizing, backing up, cataloging via the os and metadata. It’s just buzzwords like “cloud” and images of people with an iPad in a remote area editing photos.... but again it’s a dead end. It starts and ends on an iPad.
      You can’t even cull on an iPad and then tag for later select import on a laptop. Useless!
      I still recommend:
      1) create an event based cataloging of your photos based on each year on your desktop.
      2) develop a back up system that preferably has TWO back up solutions.
      3) use small laptops like the new Apple silicon to create a remote workstation that mirrors your desktop system to work remotely. Don’t forget about backing that up to a portable ssd!
      4) use iPads for jpg imports only where you do basic touch ups (often just in the photo app) to post in social media to promote you and/or your clients. Save to an album organization label the same as your desktop events. When you get home, airdrop them to your desktop workstation as an out of camera jpgs that you edited for social media on the go. iPad serves as an instant social media editing platform for your photos. It exists as an adjunct to your workflow. In this case the social media end. The work you do on it will be saved to your main desktop as social media jpgs.
      That’s it. That’s all the iPad is useful for in photo editing unless you plan to live in a volatile environment like the ipad: not a real file system, no reliable back up, no flexibility in organization, app based proprietary app storage 🤮. Nothing there is conducive to the needs of a working professional to match their workflow. You are CHANGING your workflow to work with iPad. Period.
      In conclusion: develop a solid system on a desktop or laptop that works with the os as much as possible (dir structure) to avoid a proprietary obsolescence. Make it robust with 2 backups. This can work with both windows and Mac. Once that is solid, see how an iPad can COMPLIMENT YOUR workflow. DO NOT change your workflow to be able to use a new iPad toy like the stylus. Do not fall for cloud storage bullshit, because it’s bullshit. Where before I needed only to duplicate my photo files from my desktop to laptop, now I need to “sync” thru a proprietary scheme like Adobe and use a program that is just different enough from lightroom classic to gut my workflow, I.e. event based catalogs.
      It’s not worth it. Don’t start your photo journey with this in-flexible, yet seductive, “workflow” using an iPad and adobe cloud. It’s bullshit. Instead, use it as a social media bridge to your already solid desktop workflow. Hard drives are cheap, cloud are flakey and a security risk. The last thing you want is your boudoir photography business compromised when your clients photos are grabbed from a cloud security leak and your neck is on the line for their privacy.
      Great honest video you posted. But 🖕to Adobe cloud and 🖕to iPad “workflows”. They are a huge distraction to young photographers and have failed to deliver meaningful solutions to the working photographer.
      Thanks for reading.

      @TheVFXbyArt You have some valid points but your comment makes me think that you didn't actually watch the video through.
      I'm not sure why you are so angry 😂
      The ipad and lightroom for the ipad are just tools. If they don't work for you, then don't use them.
      I have found a way that It works for me and it actually enhances my workflow rather than it being a compromise so I thought I'd share that with anyone else who was thinking of using the iPad in the same way.
      The iPad is a hundred times more convenient to use when on the road and traveling and a hundred time more fun too.
      All you need to do is turn on sync on your desktop and the photos transfer to your active catalog and you can go your merry way with backing up and storing them correctly.
      Like I say in the video, the iPad for me is a culling and quick edit tool. Don't know about you but I always hated importing photos to Lightroom on the desktop and had to leave it to build previews and add my preset and convert to DNGs etc just so I could then go one by one slowly to reject the pics I didn't like. This process is so much faster on the iPad.
      Anyway this workflow isn't for everyone, I get it, but whether you like it or not, it's the way adobe is going and soon Lightroom Classic will be obsolete so might as well get comfortable with the bullshit cloud as you call it 😆👌

      I already did import some JPGs from my Fuji and gave them a tweak in Snapseed for Instagram. I plan to do more (want to travel light yet edit on a daily basis), but am not happy about loosing my workflow of tagging while importing to dedicated folders. I think I want to keep this for archiving and editing at home.
      Having said that, your video gave me some very good input on what to try next. Maybe I’l find “my solution” some day. 🤩 Thank you. 🙏

    Hey man, thanks to your video i am really doubt to buy a ipad pro. I am not sure how many GB i need, also wondeirng to wait untill to march to get the new version? I am a hobby photographer with a expensive taste (Sony A7III). I am a bit confused about the workflow between lightroom CC en classic. You import your files to CC and how you made a sync with classic? After you got everything in classic you export them as a DNG file and put it on your ssd? If you do want to make some changes you need to upload the DNG back to lightroom CC? Did you ever used photoshop on the ipad? I hope 1 day we can skip the macbook/laptop and go full edit on the ipad pro with an SSD, you think this wil be in the near future? I read something about that the ipad pro has to little RAM GB (6 GB), and this is to less to do some multi tasks in lightroom en photoshop... Can u confirm this? Thx from the Netherlands! @Meletispix

    • @meletispix
      @meletispix  3 года назад +4

      Hey man thanks for watching! So I’d definitely suggest a minimum 512gb storage of you are going for the pro. At this point yeah probably wait a couple months for the next version. So when you have a CC subscription, the photos you put in Lightroom CC automatically sync with the Adobe cloud. This doesn’t happen automatically when you import to a Classic Library, there you have to drag your photos into the All Synced section. In any case if you import to CC and they sync to a classic library, the original Raw files are what get synced and downloaded to a pre-determined folder that you can choose from the settings. So you have the original files and the edits you’ve made synced. Hope that makes sense. You don’t need to export anything if you don’t want to. Then you just backup the entire catalog and if you want to make edits in the future you can just connect the hard drive that has that catalog in it and open it to make changes. I’ve not used photoshop much on the iPad but yeah it’s nowhere near as feature complete as the desktop version is. However both lightroom and photoshop run great on my 2018 iPad Pro. So I wouldn’t worry about ram. Hope this helps! 🙌🏼

    I was hoping for a simpler workflow, you talk about exporting jpegs to Photos, is that the Apple Photo cloud library?, also, what apple desktop/laptop are you using,? editing pics in your desktop/lap top seem to be too slow, I have the M1 MBP and Studio (Max) and there is no lag or waiting period, and I am talking about huge RAW files from my Sony A7RIV, my question is, how fast is really the process of importing the pics to the iPAD, compared with your desktop?...I m looking for an alternative for light traveling (my MPB 16" is great but heavy), have you evaluated the Macbook Air and compared with the iPAD Pro ?

    Once you’ve imported your photos onto iPad lightroom they upload to the Adobe cloud. Then do they get replaced on the iPad with smart previews? If you import 10gb of images is that going to take up 10gb of your iPad storage?

    • @meletispix
      @meletispix  3 года назад +2

      Hey Jake! So there’s no easy way of doing this because once you delete the photos from the iPad, they go from the cloud too and unless you’ve switched on your pc to sync the raws, you lose them. I guess this is to prevent you from losing the raws but I’m not sure why they don’t just stick around in the cloud, it’s a bit weird and there might be a way to do this but I don’t know it. If I want to do what you are asking, first make sure the raws have synced to my computer, then delete the photos from the iPad, and then re-sync them from the computer. This way they come back to the iPad as smart previews. However be aware that doing this will prevent you from being able to edit the photos unless you are connected to the internet which kinda sucks. So what I do when I’m low on space is keep all my raws in an external hard drive and edit them in chunks, make sure they sync up and download on my Mac, and delete from the iPad. Hope this answers your question 🙌🏼😊

      @@JakeCoventry I don't have an iPad yet (this video makes me want one!) but supposedly the iPad storage is handled "intelligently." It'll remove originals that are synced and it determines are not needed locally (e.g., not edited after some period of time). Original on iPad is replaced with a smart preview, and original can be downloaded again if needed. Can someone confirm this? Either way, I think @meletispix has the right idea of moving all the originals via LR Classic to another hard drive and cloud backup rather than paying for even more Adobe cloud space.

  • @vjay4297

    I reckon you don't know about cloud sync feature of lightroom classic. You can pick which library to upload to cloud by doing so, you get all the cloud features, and you know where your files are. Once you open lrcc, it sync the edits and you can progress from that.

    The video, while having plenty of info, is a little misleading. The iPad limitations you speak of are two-fold - limitations by the iPad itself whether hardware or OS, and limitations of Lightroom (CC). Can you confirm that all of the edits made on your iPad Pro with Lightroom CC are present on the files transferred from the Files Folder from the iPad Pro?

    • @meletispix

      Hey Creg! Yeah all edits get passed on to the Raw files that sync over the cloud to your PC and stay with them through whatever you do to them in Classic. If they are still synced then the changes you so in Classic will also transfer to the iPad. My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Thanks for the review,. Once you're done editing on an ipad for example, can you still need to go back and reedit photos in lightroom CC app? just like you normally would when you open catalog where your edits are stored in lightroom classic?

    • @meletispix
      @meletispix  3 года назад

      You’re welcome! As long as your photos are synced up to the cloud or you’ve downloaded the photos to a Lightroom Classic Catalog, you can always continue editing them there or drag them back to your All Synced Photos abs that will get them back to your iPad to edit again. Hope that makes sense cause you don’t have catalogs on the iPad, only on the desktop.

    I've had an 11" iPad Pro 2018 and have generally had no problems with overheating (for the most part, unless I've done layered composites in Affinity Photo, but it didn't cause the screen to dim). This week I tried out a 12.9" 2020 and while the extra screen real estate was great, I did notice a tendency for it to get a lot hotter faster, and not only did the screen dim (which I didn't understand why until you mentioned it was tied to overheating), but Lightroom tended to crash repeatedly as I did more and more edits. Ultimately I decided to stay with the 11" as it's a much more convenient size, while the 12.9" tended to feel unwieldy handheld (which is how I would use it most of the time). Has anyone else noticed the 12.9" overheats faster?

    I use the same work flow of you : IPad Pro + Mac mini M1 + benq SW270C monitor but I notice some color difference from Lightroom CC and Lightroom classic in my mac. I try to explain me better: I use the iPad to modify the color, WB etc… but when I open the same picture in the desktop version the color grading are different and with more sature color. In the IPad Pro screen the color are more natural. This create confusion in my work flow because I don’t know how color version is corrected. The monitor is calibrate and the profile that I used is sRGB ( I tried to use the P3 mode also). Nothings is changed. Have you never notice this difference during your works?

    • @meletispix
      @meletispix  3 года назад

      Hey Riccardo, my Mac screen is so bad I don’t even pay attention to what the colours look like on it 😂. At the end of the day the colours I see on the iPad are the same I see on my iPhone which is what I use to post to Instagram which is where most people see my images so that’s the only place I care how the colours look. My suggestion to you would be to post an image online and view it from a few different devices abs see what looks best and then edit with that in mind. Keep in mind though too that most people view our images on tiny phone screens. If you are going to print your images then that’s totally different you’d have to run tests from each device and calibrate accordingly. Hope this helps 👍🏼

    • @lewifransiscusho
      @lewifransiscusho 3 года назад

      @@auldzbuzz3374 I don’t think so. Eventhough it’s using the M1 chip, all electronic devices will come to that overheated condition sooner or later. Later for sure. Especially when given tasks that used to be for “laptop or pc” only. And given that facts, I change my mind with the iPad Pro then purchased the M1 Pro instead. They’re quite on the same price strangely. The next big question is how the M1 Air handle that situation. Without the fan, theoretically it’s iPad with built in keyboard. While iPad dims its screen when overheated, quite not sure what will M1 Air do. And it sure sounds ridiculous if the M1 Air also dims it’s screen. LOL.

    • @meletispix
      @meletispix  3 года назад

      You have to remember the laptops have all their parts and batteries separate from the screen so even if they overheat, there’s no reason to dim the display

      Are we talking pc/Mac or iPad? Cause there are a few alternatives for computers.
