As I see many people commenting on the moral correctness of the residence association's decision, let me throw light on a similar situation. Everyone now wants their children to get a job in a good IT company. It's a matter of great pride for parents if their child get an onsite assignment in US or Europe. Now, most IT companies take only a single apartment for their onsite employees in a city. Both men and women employees share the accomodation. Almost every employee avail the company facility as taking an individual apartment is a large financial burden. As the IT sector is highly professional, employees find nothing wrong in it and this professionalism character has led to our country being an IT power. Men and women generally use different rooms in the same apartment.
The hypocrisy is that our residence association members wouldn't allow the neighbouring flats to be occupied by young bachelors, but have no issue (or even be proud of) with their daughter sharing an apartment with men in New York or London during on-site assignments. Hypocrisy.

The law in the country has not given any power to Residence association for law making for all people in the area. Only the members of the residence association ( & not all residents) are bound by the by laws of a flat, and the maximum you can do to a member is to dismiss a member from the association.
