7 years on and your videos are still hitting the sweet spot. Within a few hours I changed the filters, cleaned the radix assembly, cleaned the contact head and repaired the cord retract on my DC08 and it is now operating beautifully with excellent suction. Many thanks Alec!
I've owned my DC08 for about 16 years and I did clean the Radix once, but Never to this level. But even then, I noticed a drastic change in performance. Now that I've done it properly, I think it'll be like new. Also upgraded to Hepa Filter. thanks for the tutorials!
Every couple of years, I watch this video to remind me how to clean my 20 year old DC08's gizzards. This advice & changing the filters at the same time, has ensured it works every bit as well now as when I bought it. Thanks mate.
I absolutely needed this. Didn't know my Dyson had to be reassembled that much. I did it all, just like you showed, which is very clear. I also put in two new filters and my Dysons power is back. Thank you so much.
I think I have the dc08 for about 20 years now and it still goes perfectly. Thanks for the video I just cleaned the entire machine and it was really dirty.
Thank you. Helped a lot. Without your info I wouldn't have managed to disassemble the radix. Very good, that there are people out there, who share their knowledge.
Really helpful ! I started Dysoning at 4:00 am (!!!) and, for any reason, decided it deserved cleaning. Dismantling was a nightmare till I found your tutorial... The parts are drying. 👏👏👏
My DC08 had a motor failure that the shop where I bought it wanted like 120 EUR to fix. I found motors on the net for half of that price, but I wanted to see what the real problem was. Just dissembled the machine and found that one carbon had given up. Bought a pair of new carbons for 10 EUR and installed as of your excellent instructions. The machine started to work properly again. I saw then you explanations about cleaning the whole thing which was very easy again with your perfect instructions!!! Thanks a lot mate! You are a true champion!
I thought my 15 year old Dyson DC08 was at the end of its' life! Followed this tutorial and it is sucking like it was brand new again. Wonderful, easy to follow directions. Thank you.
Maaaate, Ive had my Dyson for 14 yrs, all I've ever done was clean the filter, and blown out this part with my compressor. Today I pulled it apart. OMG the build up of dirt was incredible. Now its sparkling clean, and I thank you for this video. The only thing I have to say is with the manifold, that also came apart, and was so clogged up. Cheers
Alex I would have never had attempted to service my Dyson if it hadn't been for your video. As a result I have saved a lot of money sending my Dyson to the Dyson Doctor plus I am now my wifes new hero - Thanks
Absolutely brilliant video. My boyfriend was trying to get someone in to repair our old DC08 and then I found you and went ahead and pulled the hoover apart! Simple and easy to follow :) Thank you for saving us a chunk of cash.
A brilliant how to Alec. Thanks for making and posting it. Your search for a title could also read 'how to get rid of 'vacuum stink'. Worked a treat on our old DC29!!
Excellent video, thorough but to the point, I had my DC08 disassembled in 10 minutes, and it took about 45 minutes to clear away nearly 15 years of grime. Now just waiting for it to dry, but am sure the cleaning will do the trick as about 1/2 of the cyclones were blocked by long twisted and clumped hair. And finally found a use for the Torx drivers that have been taking up space in my tool kit. Many thanks and greetings from Prague, Czech Republic!
I just found this video. It saved me buying a new Dyson. I have a Dyson DC08 "Animal" (originally purchased in the UK). Just the same as your Dyson (just that mine is purple). I followed everything in your video, there was only minor dirt build up in the Radix assembly, and changed the filters (they were really dirty, and nothing could be seen thru them. Anyway, it is all working better than ever now :) Thanks for the very helpful and instructive video.
Thanks mate! Just added some new life to my 16 year old vacuum which, with a set of new filters plus your instructions on how to clean it now almost runs like on day one. Before that I've been cleaning the assembly mostly with a compressor. Great little machine Dyson has put out there.
Thank you for this guide! I took our DC08 apart following these instructions. The hardest part for me was getting the handle off but I used a hair dryer to make it a tiny bit more flexible and that did the trick. Thanks!
Dear Alec, thank you so much for this very useful video! You are my Dyson's GURU and you made me save money, plus the fun to make it! The harder part was to find a suitable long-reach Torx 15 key. Thanks a lot again and greetings from Italy!!!
Great video. After googling and washing/replacing filters I was still getting no improvement. None of the Google suggestions mentioned the radix cyclone until I specifically searched for that and found your video. Great stuff. My DC05 is almost like new again.
Good day! Superb video thanks mate, I owe you a cold one 😀! You Aussies are the best at instructional videos. So far this week I've fixed my hoover and changed the battery on my BMW all thanks to you guys, Cheers! From your cousin in England 😎
What a fantastic vid. I knew my Dyson was blocked up somewhere but couldn't work out how it came apart until I watched the vid. Took it apart this morning, cleaned it up and reassembled it. It's now as good as new and all it cost me was five quid for a Torque 15 screwdriver! Well done mate you deserve a medal for putting these vids on here. Thanks a bunch.
I just wanted to say thanks for your video, it was very clear and useful. It has taken me hours to do what you demonstrated in 5 minutes and I had to borrow some Torx screwdrivers but I think it's well worth it as someone just told me they paid nearly £100 to get their machine serviced and all I've had to buy was a new HEPA filter which arrived this morning! :)
Really nice: Clear and efficient... I received this vacuum from a friend but when I turned it on it was smelling very bad. I disassemble it clean it and Voilà! Thanks, man!...
Thank you Alec. I am very appreciative of the good people like yourself who help us less technically talented folk find our way with such machinery :-) I have an old DC08 (has old Matsushita motor) that I washed the whole radix assembly (before I saw your great tutorial....doh!). Alot later, when it was fully dry, I took the radix apart as you directed and saw that the gasket is a little warped in a couple of places. Do I need to get another? If so do you know from where I can get one? Thanks for your help. J
Thanks for that Alec. After vacuuming plaster dust my machine is well and truly buggered, but now I will be able to fix it really cheaply, and not get ripped off.
Bought the DC08 15 years ago, NEVER cleaned it, today i did. It was no fun but tomorrow it will be like new. That vacuum is still running without issue, until today i sucked about 800 gramm of flour, that was just to much, well i just needed to clean the filters but still i disassambled it and just washed it all out. If this vacuum will stop working i will surely buy again a dyson and will pay premium price, because it is worth it!
Great video. Just ordered some filters for our Dyson cleaners. Question - is there a video showing how to dismantle a yellow DC8 Contact Head so as the complete the “service”?
Many thanks this was a brilliant guide. Another tip. we put all of the components through the dishwasher by themselves then out in the sun for an afternoon. Spotless and its like new
Great tutorial ! I got my 10 year old DC21 cleaned up like new. I ordered both filters and put them in. I would never have figured the radix out on my own. The problem persists, however! The sound of a blockage comes as a whoosh "pop" noise if started with the canister on. With it off, the suction is good and the motor sounds great. I'm at my wits end- if there is a cat toy in there I can't find it...ever encountered this?
Thanks so much for posting this. The DC08 had its first clean in 15 years. Had no idea how to change the filters either. Frankly I'm impressed with the Dyson holding out for so long. Hope the cleaning and filter replacement gives it a new lease on life. I used an extra long T15 torxdriver but 150mm long would do the trick I think. 😊
Hiya, was looking up dc08 stripping down videos and found yours. I’ll use your hints and tips. It’s for the vac at my parents church and I love to clean out vacuums (it’s a hobby). I really enjoyed your presentation. I know it’s years old. Hey, I like fixing things!
I stripped my DC 8 this weekend and after a flush through with warm water , I put most of the components in the dishwasher on the lowest temp (45C) and the results were excellent. With clean filters fitted , the vacuum was almost as good as new. (P.s The dishwasher had a cleaning agent used on the highest temp(75C) afterwards. Didn't want to upset the missus).
Thank you for such an easy to follow video! Just took everything apart and couldn't believe the mess! Looking forward to a stronger more reliable performance once it's reassembled! Thanks again!
Great video! Thanks - really helped a lot - easy to follow and covered all the steps. Do you have a video for dis-assembling and cleaning DC08 Contact head brush? Thanks
Fantastic video but I'm stuck trying to get the outlet filter open. It won't budge and I can't work out what direction to pull it as you do it very quickly and easily in the video. Should I wedge a screwdriver in the join and prise them apart? Thanks
great video mate. You explained it all perfectly and whoever was working the camera did a great job too. Will look out for more of your tutorials. Thanks heaps for your help.
Thanks so much, really clear presentation, I watched, I bought a set of torque screwdrivers (long handled) for 4.99 and the most usefull tip was the part of the filter that you need to see light through...I couldn't even after washing. so I bought a new one for £3.50 and now 2 days later I am like one of the commenters below filthy... but my Dyson is clean and as good as new. Amazing difference.
Thank you followed these clear instructions and my Dyson is working properly again (I was thinking it was time to scrap it but have now changed my mind)
On the Newer DC08's the exit ports of the conical tubes have a little "saturn shaped" air-restrictor. (would be in the places you can see at 5:57) I do not know why they changed the machines to this design but I drilled mine out with a 10mm drill bit and it dramatically improved suction. Seems the old design was good and they shouldn't have messed with it.
I have the normal head for the DC08 and would like to do a thorough cleaning. I only find two screws. Have you disassembled the brush head for hard and carpeted floors?
What a brilliant tutorial video! I Our cleaner is as clean now as when it was new, and working so much better than it has for a long time - the only expense was a cheap T15 screwdriver - thanks for mentioning the size.
The white manifold assembly is two parts and can be taken apart to get inside all the air channels. Gently prise all the way round slowly and gently working inwards until the cover pops off. Be gentle as its fairly delicate. Wash and push fit to reassemble.
Helpful 10 years later. Cheers! Would like to know the screwdriver definition to open the main section - looks like a torx or hex, what size? Anyways, cheers
Thanks a lot. Now I know why the upper piece shouldn't get wet (also according to the manual). Hopefully this will safe my vacuum. I think you just saved me 400 EUR.
Hi Dave, There is very little that can be done with the turbo brush unfortunately. The best thing you can do is remove the base plate, and then pull the rollers off the head (pull away from the centre) once off you can clean the steel spindle where loads of muck seems to accumulate. It is important to do this often as this is how the bearings get blocked. Apart from that there is nothing you can actually do for your turbo head.
I have one of these but someone has lost the cone part off of the cyclone unit. The part you said you are not sure what it is called. I cannot find that part seems I have to buy the whole cyclone unit. Good video though thanks !
Thanks for this old but still great video. Unfortunately the (paper?) gasket of the radix assembly is broken in my DC08 and I can't find a new one anywhere - I'm already thinking about 3d printing one. Does anyone have an idea, where those gaskets might be available?
Hi Alex, i saw your video a few months ago & got filters & about to take the old dc08 apart 2 try & clean but noticed a post saying they used a Torx driver. Cant i disassemble all the parts with a philips head screwdriver or flat edge screw driver? I dont know if ive got a Torx driver or what it even is! Is it like an Alan key? Cheers from out the back of the black stump.
I was recently given a Dc08 and have followed your instructions to clean the top bit. But can the head be pulled apart to clean? I can see the internal hose is very dirty
I am fixing DC 08 for a friend. All clean now & motor replaced. But the manifold gasket (the one you say not to wash) looks in less than ideal shape. Can't locate a replacement. Should I reassemble anyway, or maybe use one of the silicone gasket sealants in conjunction with the old gasket?
Hey, this is the first video that is realy made by professional! Awesome! One question: At time 4:23 of the video, you are saying this seal cannot be washed. Now scince we have the Dyson DC29, near 4 months now, I washed the dyson with water, shaking, near 4 times. I just took the canister away, then began washing, didnt took parts off. So, do i need to get a new seal, the one from 4:23 or if not unmounted, it will be fine?
Hi Alec I have a dc08t that I bought second hand. I followed your tutorial and thanks by the way. There used to be a bad smell but it's now gone. Anyway I'm not sure how good the suction should be with the turbo head but is there a way I can test it? Or how can I tell if I'm sucking at full potential lol
its important that any plastic is bone dry before reassembly. This is because any water that would be left in the cyclone assembly would mix with the dust and because the dust is so fine; it would dry like rock hard cement. if there were a lump of this 'cement' left in the cyclone then it would change the shape of the cyclone and change the suction path from a cyclone to a straight suction path; causing the dust to travel further towards the motor like a conventional vacuum cleaner. Dyson dosnt mention this for fear of making their cleaners seem unreliable. just make sure that no water enters this part of the cleaner whatsoever. consider using rinse aid to make sure that no water is left; or maybe drying the cyclones in an airing cupboard.
Hello, the part that is not allowed to get wet, is totally out of shape, is it possible to buy a new one? Cannot find anything about it in Dutch stores.
The dc 29 is almost exactly the same except It has a "lifetime" hepa filter. How long is a life time in vacuum years? Mine is 2 years old and is charcoal black/grey. Should I replace this? If so where do you get replacements from?? I'm from Adelaide SA.
Hi. I tried to buy the concertina filter thats made of some cardboard type msterial but only saw foam filters for both filters. Can you get the old type original filter at all & are they better than the foam one? Still from bak o' Black stump ;)
The amount of times I have watched this alongside cleaning my own dyson has been been a lifesaver! This is gold!
7 years on and your videos are still hitting the sweet spot. Within a few hours I changed the filters, cleaned the radix assembly, cleaned the contact head and repaired the cord retract on my DC08 and it is now operating beautifully with excellent suction. Many thanks Alec!

Still watch this video when servicing my Dyson. Easy to follow
great video mate. You explained it all perfectly and whoever was working the camera did a great job too. Will look out for more of your tutorials. Thanks heaps for your help.
Fantastic: Clear, efficient and really appreciated the reassembly part!!!
I have a Dc02 which is slightly different but I found this video very useful. Thanks Alex.
Thank you followed these clear instructions and my Dyson is working properly again (I was thinking it was time to scrap it but have now changed my mind)
Brilliant video. I had a torx bit on a driver so struggled with the recessed screws. I used a long small allen key to undo these.
On the Newer DC08's the exit ports of the conical tubes have a little "saturn shaped" air-restrictor. (would be in the places you can see at 5:57)
I do not know why they changed the machines to this design but I drilled mine out with a 10mm drill bit and it dramatically improved suction.
Seems the old design was good and they shouldn't have messed with it.
Perfect demonstration & description. Well done sir. Any tips for doing the same on a DC39 maybe?
Hi Matzen, They have made some models to be "non serviceable" but also have also improved the manifold system so it is not necessary.
Just followed these instructions, and they were brilliant.
This video is just great... perfect! Now..can you show us how to take a DC29 apart?
The white manifold assembly is two parts and can be taken apart to get inside all the air channels. Gently prise all the way round slowly and gently working inwards until the cover pops off. Be gentle as its fairly delicate. Wash and push fit to reassemble.
Hi Ian,
Yea it is very common I made a living for a few years off just fixing dysons in my town. So easy to fix yet so many needed it.
Are you in the UK or Oz Alec? Do you still work on vac cleaners or sell parts for old cleaners?
Before I watched your video, I was struggling to find some of the screws in the assembly. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Great videos Alec. Im having trouble getting access to the Hepa filter. I cannot get the cover off! Any advice please
Helpful 10 years later. Cheers! Would like to know the screwdriver definition to open the main section - looks like a torx or hex, what size? Anyways, cheers
15 torx. cheers
Thanks a lot. Now I know why the upper piece shouldn't get wet (also according to the manual). Hopefully this will safe my vacuum. I think you just saved me 400 EUR.
Hi Dave,
There is very little that can be done with the turbo brush unfortunately.
Alec you Legend ! I'm a guy who happens to love vacuuming ...😆 Your vids are so helpful. Cheers!
I have one of these but someone has lost the cone part off of the cyclone unit. The part you said you are not sure what it is called. I cannot find that part seems I have to buy the whole cyclone unit. Good video though thanks !
Excellent video, do you have experience with a DC22 radix?
Did it all in under an hour and now my Dyson is brand new again :D Cheers
2022 & this vid is still spot on! 👍 Cheers bud, jus wat I needed 2 know 👌
Thank you so much. My one is 16 years old. Now it works like it is brand new.
Bloody awesome instructional video and yes my dyson was blocked where you said they would be - blown away - thanks so much for your great videos :-)
Great video! How long a torx-driver do I need?
Excellent. Thank you. I have cleaned the succession head as well as replaced the motor. Great video angles and easy to follow language. Thank you.
the video has helped keep my Dyson DC08 going for 12?! years
Bloody marvellous video.
I’ve often wondered if I needed to pull mine apart.
Thanks.
It is Torx 10!
Hi Alec
I have a dc08t that I bought second hand. I followed your tutorial and thanks by the way.
There used to be a bad smell but it's now gone. Anyway I'm not sure how good the suction should be with the turbo head but is there a way I can test it? Or how can I tell if I'm sucking at full potential lol
Not sure if it was mentioned, but I did mine today and all the screws were torx head, so you might need to buy a set of torx screwdrivers first.
Is it the same procedure you use, If you clean a Dyson DC08 animalpro?
Great tutorial! I tried this and it really does work.
its important that any plastic is bone dry before reassembly.
Thanks Alec. The suction is much improved.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Now my dyson works much better than before.
Brilliant! Easy to understand and follow. My Dyson works so much better now. Thank you.
The dc 29 is almost exactly the same except It has a "lifetime" hepa filter. How long is a life time in vacuum years? Mine is 2 years old and is charcoal black/grey. Should I replace this? If so where do you get replacements from?? I'm from Adelaide SA.
+pillyab You will find some on Ebay
Awesome! Now I understand why it lost suction - six years of same filter and no cleaning = horrible. Thanks from Sweden!
This is one of the best videos mate thanks
Is it the same procedure you use, If you clean a Dyson DC08 origin please?
Hi. I tried to buy the concertina filter thats made of some cardboard type msterial but only saw foam filters for both filters.
Can you get the old type original filter at all & are they better than the foam one? Still from bak o' Black stump ;)
