These purple DC08s always give me nostalgia. When I was little I had a toy dc08 in purple from casdon brand new i loved it but it got threw away long ago...
I'd say it has more of a case of Glass Turbopower disease - and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Seems certain colours of ABS plastic are affected more than others due to the dyes used in the plastic's manufacture. The purple "Animal" variant of these machines made in the 2000's seem to be the most prone to brittleness as they aged, and the DC07 Animal also in that lilac purple colour was just as brittle. The older 1990s grey plastics used were also problematic but Dyson re-formulated the grey plastic in the late 2000s making it more bendy and flexible, which stopped the problem of fractured plastics, they just then appeared more "flimsy" instead. The DC08 in question here looks an old one, probably made in around 2003 - 2005, so in terms of age, its getting on a bit now, and Dyson have long since stopped supporting the DC08, as they never really intended their machines to last as long as 15 - 20 years, especially now the cordless are the main range, and they last about 3 - 5 years, depending on how long the battery lasts usually as they are out of warranty after 2 years. The fact is that these days, no-one wants the old pre 2010 Dysons any more, they all want cordless these days, so the old DC08 is as you say, worth diddly-squat.
My DC08 died from brittleness. The grey housing became so brittle it cracked when lifted and hit the ground breaking into multiple pieces. Literally any component on the housing could be broken off with minor bending. I saved the motor and repaired my parents DC08. My parents motor in excellent eletrical condition failed by bearing failure. Wasn't aware is was so common.

I don't know why people want cordless Dysons. They aren't as powerful as a corded one.
Have you ever found a DC01 to become brittle like this? I once found a dc14 that was so brittle that just putting the floor head down caused cracking.
