It was Metallica's guitarist, Dave Mustaine, and he went on to form Megadeth, so you had it close, Matara, but no dice 😂

Yep, if you watch Metallica history stuff, basically Dave Mustaine was an angry drunk while the other guys were just normal drunk…

    • @cygnus987
      @cygnus987 7 месяцев назад +2

Yes, I was immediately thinking Mustaine was who she meant.
Also on a related note, Marty Friedman the lead guitarist for Megadeth through most of the 90s moved to Japan in the 2000s and has had a fascinating Solo career since; turning out great albums like Music for Speeding and Tokyo Jukebox, having a TV show for a while, plus a bunch of collaboration work.

I've always been interested in idols, but I never took the time to check them out myself. Now, with vtubers kind of bridging the gap between the two communities a little, I feel like it's a lot easier for someone who's in to vtubers to get into idols.
I'll be going to Japan next month, so I'll check if there's any taiban going on!

My oshi is Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. His voice and songwriting mesh perfectly with the melodies and have captivated me since my highschool days. Even after all these years, their album Houses of the Holy is my favorite album (followed closely by Gorillaz - Plastic Beach). Just listening to the first song of the album "The Song Remains the Same", one can really see why they have such a dedicated following. Anyway, just wanted to express my devotion, my red hot passion for Led Zeppelin and their iconic singer. Thanks for the stream and HAGS!

This reminded me of a show u should finish "OshiBudo" or If my Oshi ever went to the Budokan. Many things about the underground idols seems to be reflected there from the fan pov to the idol pov. Very interested. It is like.... poetry... in many places. Very fun show as usual I hope I'll be able to catch up to the latest episode before it ends.

FROM A KPOP FAN FOR 5 YEARS :
    STAN ZEROBASEONE(ZB1)🩵🌹 💙🌹🩵🌹💙🌹🩵
7:42 I find it funny the kpop equivalent of dakimakura is a cardboard cut out of their favorite member🧍‍♂️
16:13 Theres alot of stuff going on at the kpop venues, theres merch and merch freebies that the fans have made and you can see people doing dance challenges and trading photocards
19:30 In kpop there's something thats kinda similar like that but its an award show like mcountdown, music mank, show champion and Inkigayo and its for groups to promote their new comeback (and another thing kpop idols are the MCs for these shows and a member of my ult group Zerobaseones Sung Hanbin is the mc for mcountdown and since his representative emoji is a hamster so he is called a Hamc)
21:40 In kpop thats called a solostan, they are known for being toxic and weird so people grown to REALLY dislike them and bias is different, you like a member more then other members but still being OT(whatever how many members in the group) but solostans are different they dont care for for the other members besides one member
(also theres been some recent drama in the TXT community with yeon1uv for being weird and being a solostan)
22:15 Reminds me of the H.O.T vs SECHSKIES fight that happened in first gen
26:00 In kpop we have unique lightsticks for a group but i guess theres group colours like for NCT its green and for ZB1(Zerobaseone) is blue but never assigned colours for the members
(we assigned animals to the members its like oshi marks)
42:54 for Idols under the age of 19 they can’t stream past 10pm
And a funny thing is for ZB1, they were formed by a survival show so when the finals came around to see what contestants get to be in the group, the announcers had to go quick for the 9th member(Han Yujin) to be announced because he was a minor since in was gonna be 10 soon.
Also something super cute for the same group, when it was award season and one of the award shows was on new years and all the groups were on stage counting down to the new year
But Yujin had to be left behind at the tables, and his groupmates were at aged to be on tv but they decided to stay with their maknae(the youngest person in the group) Yujin. So thats why ZB1 wasn't in the group photo for that award show even tho they were there
47:17 It was more common to see for kpop groups to replace members in earlier generations like Brave girls
1:05:44 she was once a star now she's hated by the whole kpop community (dating a guy that was in the burning sun scandal and if you don't know what it is i recommend a video that stephanie soo (rotten mango) did on it)
    1:06:09 i love suzy’s song I love you boy
1:12:45 actually Kim Jiwoong from ZB1 was actually was in 3 other groups before zb1.INX and ATEEN that the companies treated him and his members horribly and B.I.T had to disband because of lack of promotions so he started to do acting and that is were he got fans from his roles in BL dramas
so he joined boys planet to continue his dream to be an idol (thinking it was his last chance since hes was an older guy) but then he debuted and his group Zerobaseone gained lots of popularity and success and when award season came around and they attended MAMA(Mnet asian music awards) his group won 3 awards so they posted it on instagram to show off their achievements and one of the members of jiwoongs old group said “thank you for achieving my dreams” or something like that
so Jiwoong won his first roty(rookie of the year) after 7 years also his group winning after 4 months of being active
Also sorry if there was any typos

I loved hearing about both of your passions for live music and how much Matara enjoyed seeing an idol live! I've so far only been able to see "true/professional" idols live once, and in the US no less, when BPM15Q performed at AWA 2022. I enjoyed the music and figured I liked idols well enough before then, but the impact of seeing it live was totally different, they both had titanic stage presence (which is funny given both nicamoq and rinahamu are quite tiny) and I was just completely taken by it. It's funny hearing Mint talk about how the real crazy wota stuff happens in the back, when I'm super used to the most energetic parts of the crowd (and not just moshing) are near the front. I wonder if that's any different at chika shows that get rowdy and have stage diving?
Anyway, I could write poetry about how much I love live music and seeing other people getting excited about, and how I've fallen in love with bands I was lukewarm on before after awesome concerts, but I'd really love some day to hear about your favorite or most memorable live show experiences!

    Hello M&M, long-time listener, first-time commenter XD
To answer Matara's question about "band switching" and Metallica - originally, Dave Mustaine was a guitarist for Metallica, but before they even released their first album "Kill 'Em All", he was ejected from the band for his, uhm, inebriated antics. He still was credited for a few songs on that album, as well as two more on their second album, "Ride The Lightning"; the most famous one being "The Four Horsemen", from which Mustaine then reprised its "main riff" and accelerated it to create the song "Mechanix", which was featured on Dave Mustaine's new band's first album, "Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!". That band being... Megadeth!
So you were in the right ballpark all along, but the details were eluding you. Hope it helped quench your thirst for knowledge, and as always, HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

    Edit:
Funny that Mint mention DD's as being a part of the vtuber space now. I'm glad it's starting to be less negative in the idol industry. Currently I think it's still kind of a negative term in some vtuber circles and fans. Even I have an Oshi who treats her most loyal fans diferently from DD's. She just thinks people who only have her oshi mark and follow her should be put to a different standard. I dont know... it's interesting for sure.
I know already that this episode is gonna be full of awesome yapping about cute girls and their music!

Was off and on for a long time but been a consistent viewer of him and Joel since 2017. I didn't actually know about Limealicious for all that time, but once she got a Vtuber model I started watching her too. There was a clip of Vinny talking about it. And now, through Limes, one of my favorite Vtubers is playing games with Vinny, and another of my favorites is being roped in here too. It's trippy, I never would have expected this, and it makes me smile like an idiot. Thank you Matara and Limes!

You two mentioned idols that were more like a rock or metal group but also mixed it with more cute things and one of the groups I was introduced to this year was HANABIE. Just going through their stuff has become one of my Monday habits (especially Be the GAL since it's a summer-themed song and my head relates it with the podcast).
The way the group can switch the rhythm and vibe multiple times on a single song is like pure poetry, or like a full concert perfectly packed on a single song.

I'm definitely of the mind of supporting specific talents, and not just the group as a whole. This applies even to the way I deal with corpo VTuber agencies, as well. Because, at the end of the day, those groups or agencies are in it for acclaim and money... more often than not, their talent is just a cog in their machine, which they can just continue replacing. And besides, it is inevitable that there may be individuals in that group you either don't like, or even outright despise.

    "well until... it hasnt"
    lmao😭😭
I think of groups with graduation sistem as like sports team where you keep rooting for the same side even if old players leave, but it doesnt work quite as well if you dont promote new idols for the fans of the idols that are leaving. and even if you do it some ppl only follow the group because of their oshi and if she graduates they also do. Nogizaka and Morning musume are still doing well even withouth all of the original graduated, but they are not as popular as they used to be. I think the sistems still works for big groups, but 5-12 member groups should just stay with a fixed line up

As far as the crowd not cheering for everyone and only for their Oshii, I wonder what the idols think of that.
I could see it actually being kind of nice because you can clearly see who in the crowd is there specifically for YOU and who isn't. But IDK, I guess I can see how others might feel upset if they don't see anyone cheering for them.

I was a longtime AKB fan and finally stopped following them when my oshi (non Kami 7) left, I also still like some of their songs but it's just not the same anymore. So I definitely agree with Mint on that aspect, although I think this might be something that's more common in jpop idol fandoms. The Western j-idol community has always been small and close knit, especially among girl fans so sometimes I wonder if I've interacted with Mint at some point in another life lol.

100% When a member leaves it could be creative differences entirely, they don't vibe with the new direction and the sound of the band changes entirely. The difference between being in a band and being on tour with the band for 10 years, you just straight up get sick of people sometimes. Like they pick up new habits, get addicted to things and the classic; not a song writer but decides to pick up poetry and tries to get it featured in the next album.

On the topic of the Ship of Theseus idol groups, this comparison might be off-base because I’m not really an idol fan, but I know of a Western group that does do this that might be helpful as a mental frame of reference to think about these different idol groups: Celtic Women. Then again, they also don’t make the group about the individual women themselves but *the group*, like a smaller-sized chorus group.

When Mint started talking about pei pa koa without fully describing it I just knew what it was!! I thought the reference was gonna be linked to Zayn since he recently brought it up in an interview too. 😂Fortunately the pronounciation is not butchered because the spelling has become westernised. In Chinese it's pipagao.

Thank you Mint for the insight today!! From someone that's not very informed this episode is incredible to learn a about idols.
To me it's commendable to dedicate yourself to the whole sphere of strellato and what comes with it.
The work, the effort that is not always rewarded would be in my eyes when I look up but not many stop to admire. And I'd genuinely hope, when they get popular, to get the chance to apologize for not being earlier with them.
    Your previous life is past,
but here a new life starts!
    I promise no tomorrow,
    because today will always last
and since each day is the same,
there will be no longing for the past.

Each of these episodes brightens my day every week. It's been a troubled time today- in both scheduled and unscheduled ways. Bah, emergencies. Thanks for doing so much for us fans.
And it would be delightful if you read some cool poetry you like for us sometime.
As for the question of following individuals versus the group when one person leaves- I haven't really followed any musical group in that way yet. But for vtubers- I think I'm a bit of a "follow my oshis out the door" person. Maybe if a group or corpa has proven it's still a good place, and there aint bad blood, and they still have the same vision of what success sounds like, I'd look in on talents I hadn't watched before except in collabs, or take a chance on new ones. But I definely watch for the individual vibes people cultivate.

Never really got into idol stuff beyond some songs and more or less related stuff like some anime and vtubers, but hope I might get a chance to go to some small idol concert next time I'm able to go to Japan, would really like to experience it at least once.

Ninjiom getting popular around the Vtuber circle is so wild to me as a Hong Konger lol.
For us it used to be just another "Old Man's Chinese Medicine"
We take it if we get a sore throat but some don't like the taste. Now its the most iconic Hong Kong export (which admittedly we hardly have any). Its so wild lol.

1:00:18 I don't follow idol groups, just tuber comedians XD, but I did start watching Josh from Lets Game It Out after Anthony left and the channel blew up. I can only imagine how gut-wrenching it might be for the members that leave before success. Would it be as if your imposter syndrome is being validated?

I'm one of those normie rock guys but if I had to land on a musical oshi in that sphere, it'd be Alice in Chains. Yep, grunge rock. Even though they stayed in that rock wheelhouse, they were always experimenting with a lot of styles within it. A mix of hard rock, melodic poetry, and they harmonize SO MUCH in their music. I still remember where I was when I heard the news that Layne Staley had passed (RIP legend). William DuVall, the guy they eventually landed on to take over lead vocals, has been filling the shoes pretty well and the music style hasn't changed (which is rare in lineup changes).

I think the industrial band that really embodies the whole idol revolving door thing is Pigface. Literally an industrial genre supergroup that even had Trent Reznor in it.
