They got great technical skill, but they focused on the wrong aspects. They should have just made an easy simulation of how it is supposed to work instead of actually making it work. A Video Demo like the one the Dropbox founder did would have done a better job than what they possibly could have had to present. That way they would have also saved plenty of time to work on the buisness model and presentation. You have all the time in the world to make your product work in a real way after the pitch. You actually never want to invest to much time in to a functional product unless you know through emperical testing, that it has a consumer target group
Really its inspiring to me as a beginner programmer ... I hope one day I will also attend hackathon ! But I loved that drone ..and it's just I can't believe they didn't won..
you don't have to be professional to join a hackathon, even if you know nothing about programming. There will be workshops to guide you, you can join to gain experiences.
Wow these look like so much fun!! I would bet the problem was the megaphone in the background was too loud. Maybe producing too much bass input, and the program was thrown off by that on stage. Maybe a fix would have been to add a high-pass filter to the program and have not as complex voice commands.
Great tips! Yeah, we had it working backstage but there was some sort of malfunction when we got up there. Perhaps the high-pass filter would have saved our bacon? Not sure.
No, this is taking place at hackathon. People come to these and try to tackle a problem in the time that they're there. You then present your project on stage in the hopes of winning, usually for sponsor prizes (in this case it was 5000$). Sometime they are sponsored by large companies and offer money in exchange for the solution that you've come up.
It's been several years, but I believe we were connecting to the drone via a wifi connection. I believe it has an on-board AP and it actually hosts its own wifi network for use with the official remote control app.
Put a Raspberry Pi 3 on it, SSH Tunnel it to a laptop and use it as a mobile IMSI catcher. That would be cool. Then map all the cell users and data on Maltego. :) And...move on to the next step...enumeration
No, I don't attend hackathons, but I am interested in attending one sometime. The idea was really cool and it's so frustrating that it didn't work on stage. Still, you can't expect everything to work perfectly if you are creating a high-level project with a two person team in a short and crunched timeline!
Zeyad Moustafa thanks, man! I wish you the best of luck with your future hackathons. I find that they are a ton of fun and it's a great way to learn a lot in a short amount of time. If you get filmed, send me the link!
Check dated 2012, video posted 2014, youtube recommended 2018
The amazing of 'late' machine learning. The recommendation is out of whacked.
yeah so true wtf
reading this comment 2021
It got recommended to me in 2021!
It would be crazy if someone hacked their drone and then they were the next up on stage and just presented the hack that hacked their drone
It's real, check out skyjack on GitHub
"Yo dawg, I heard you like to hack drones..."

Y did i get this recommended after 8 years?
Are they trying to hack to the drone on the spot or improve it?
Because shouldn't they prepare everything before being on camera?
