That bit about how attack patterns stick with you forever is so true. I replayed Sekiro recently after not touching it for like 3 years, and I was still getting every boss on my first or second try. Kind of a shame, honestly, because one of my favorite memories is how much I struggled with Isshin on my first playthrough. I gave him a couple hours every night for a week. Then on Friday I sat down, said "Either you break or I do," then gamed for 6 hours straight and finally got him. Beating him first try all these years later was a real "Huh" moment.

Same here my dude. Sekiro was my first FromSoft game, I used to be more of a casual player, so needless to say it was quite the challenge.
Beating Isshin took me like 3 days, and when I finally did I was kneeling on the floor, ecstatic, my hands shaking, finally able to say I had done it.
Truly an amazing experience that I don't think I'll ever experience again with another game.
Sure, Malenia and Sister Friede are crazy hard challenges too, but Sekiro is just.. too unique and great.

@@joesheridan9451 Well, in my experience at least, Sekiro is a pursuit of perfection sort of game. Mastering it is basically you embarking on a journey to perfection. This basically means getting to a point where you can flawless every single boss fight in the game consistently. And to me, that journey was never stale. I started my first playthrough, struggled through it, and still learned to appreciate it. I then had an easier time till NG+4 where I focused on getting all the achievements for the game. At this point, I was still learning, and nowhere close to that perfection mark. NG+5, I did a bell demon+charmless run with all bosses and minibosses, and it was brutally difficult, almost like I was playing the game for the first time again. But I persevered through it. Then, I managed to easily do a deathless run Immortal severance ending for NG+6. And then NG+7, I did a charmless all bosses and mini bosses, with no revive run. And after completing that, I came ever so close to that perfection milestone. And then, not too long after that, I completed Mortal Journey bell demon + charmless. And now I just go back and fight the bosses when I'm bored. I pursued perfection and I reached it, and there are very few games like Sekiro that revolve around it.

I absolutely love this game. I have reinstalled it and played it all the way through a couple more times since it first came out and it never disappoints. I'll never forget the first time I took down Genichiro (without realizing I could explore and find more prayer beads) and feeling like I finally comprehended the parry mechanics and the flow of Sekiro's combat. It gave me a huge adrenaline rush. As a veteran of FromSoft action/RPGs, it felt like they intentionally designed this game to punish players who had already mastered the dodge roll mechanic of Demon's/Dark Souls (as well as Bloodborne's dash) and forced you to hold your ground and learn to deflect/parry each enemy. It totally changed the playstyle for me and started to feel like a rhythm game where I was essentially engaging in a form of dance with each enemy/boss encounter. I LOVE Elden Ring, but I hope they try some more new stuff in their next game like they did with Sekiro.

Can't wait to get to the other inner bosses. I really enjoyed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order before I played Sekiro. That parrying style of combat just appeals much more to me than the Dark Souls roll. Even in Monster Hunter, my favorite weapons are lance, longsword and chargeblade, because they give so much opportunity for continuing your attack while dodging/blocking at the same time. It's so sad that people seem to forget about Sekiro, especially since it's what got me into FromSoft games and I also (probably quite biased) think it's the best one. I do have good reason to think so however. I believe that a game can be designed a lot more tightly when it's being designed around only one specific playstyle instead of trying to make many viable.
People also complain about the fact that you play as Sekiro/Wolf when in almost all other FromSoft games you play as an unnamed character of your choosing. I love the fact that you get to be a specific character with a backstory and motivations though and his design is really cool so I wouldn't wanna customize it anyway. And finally, people complain that you don't get any new swords or anything, but like that's the coolest part to me. It's not about finding the best sword for the job, it's about the skill of learning how to play it better and better. You don't need a shiny new weapon after every boss if the one you have can kill a boss instantly the moment you stagger them. Such a good, underrated game, man

I've forgotten all the locations and forgotten most enemies but I've most definitely forgotten all their movesets. I can and am ready to experience Sekiro again. Hesitation Is Defeat, boys. Wish me luck.

I think one thing that’s important that wasn’t mentioned is the story. There are several different endings depending on the decisions you make and that gives a huge reason to replay the game a few times. Plus the lore you get while doing so makes the game so much more intriguing.

I do think the fact that sekiro requires that perfect but shorter performance is why people don't recommend it. Especially with how much more punishing death is in Sekiro.
Punishing to a new player*** I guess I should clarify because I can agree that once you know what to do, it's a LOT less punishing than other souls games.

I’ll say this boys, you can only play Sekiro one way and no multiplayer. The amount of sh*t you can do with 2 buddies in DS 1, DS3 and Elden will give you memories of a lifetime. Teaming up on bosses, finding sick gear and getting invaded by ppl wearing whatever tf they’re wearing leading to a multi freak battle with ppl fat rolling all around the place leads to amazing online moments you can’t do with Sekiro.
You’re all entitled to your opinions, not trying to knock you guys. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if these comments won’t hold up over time because you guys won’t get the same joy out of playing Sekiro for the 1000th time *the exact same way* like 6 years from now. If you still feel that way about Sekiro, that’s awesome! But again wouldn’t surprise me if you find yourselves thinking “I could play Sekiro again.. or I could try a new run on Whatever Souls and attempt a dagger only build or something.
You kinda need _a bit_ more than solid combat to keep players coming back again and again. Fashion Souls alone is its own community lol

    • @icebox1954
      @icebox1954 9 месяцев назад +9

@@Josh.JustJosh. Teaming up is for weakling cowards and usually when I invade the host is incompetent and wouldn't be able to defeat a Godrick Soldier without help much less a boss. Being carried through the game is as close as most hosts get to actually playing the game, which is about as much as watching a video of someone else playing.
I definitely play Sekiro the least but it's still the best game. Elden Ring is based around mediocrity at its core but because it's so mediocre there's a lot of builds you can make. Elden Ring is an inferior product in terms of quality and it's not even close but its mediocre quality is also what lets it have a big quantity. Elden Ring also has PvP.
If it were up to me when it comes to PvP in From games summoning wouldn't be possible for bosses and there should be as many invaders as summons for the host.

You can get pretty far while basically not respecting deflecting or any of the mechanics that you eventually realize completely control the pace of battle if you get good at them. Of course you will get shit on eventually, but I never felt the brick wall so much as a feeling that the enemies were just getting way more limited in terms of being exposed to damage, and the game naturally compelled me to be a bit more desperate to use the advanced moves over time even though I wasn't in the first half of the game very much, and by the time I climbed to the top of the tower, I'd just barely gotten the hang of consistently deflecting multi hit combos while properly mixing in the correct response to the heavy moves.

I think one of the important ways to fix Sekiro 2 is to include more weapons that encourage more playstyles. The trick would be to maintain the same combat system, just in different ways. For example, including a spear for a more passive build. Parrying with the spear depleats the opponents posture more than the Katana, but the players recovery from attacks/parry is much slower, encouraging a more strategic playstyle. I hope we get Sekrio 2.

I think it is an oversimplification to state sekiro is all about deflecting. Yes deflecting is very important but the game also rewards you for being strategically aggressive, for instance in the lady butterfly battle there are many opportunities to push her and make her stumble or cancel out one of her illusion abilities. It rewards you for being smart and not hesitating, whether you are aggressive or defensive.

That doesn't set you up for destroying the game in NG+ lol.

Perhaps the lack of variety in character build and multiplayer/PvP options were a part of the reason for players not clinging to Sekiro as they did other FromSoftware games, but I'd like to believe that's intentional. The PvP element _could_ be implemented, had they wanted to, but they chose not to. In my experience, having a seriously deep and engaging solo experience come to a close as the credits start rolling, leaving you both wanting more and feeling proud of what you've accomplished is an incredibly gratifying thing. Sekiro nailed it. If anything, it proves that there's still an insane amount of entertainment value to be found in these kinds of games.

I don't think the role of the powerful story of this game should be downplayed. The epic setting and more open dialogue - when compared to previous FromSoft games - serve to potentially draw a reluctant player in and motivate them to keep playing. I was intrigued by Okami's (Sekiro's) journey and the characters he encountered along the way, and finding out what happened next made me want to push through those tough boss fights. Additionally, in typical FromSoft fashion, the story is not as concrete as a standard video game's might be; with hidden lore tidbits sprinkled throughout the world for one willing to look. This may not be everyone's enjoyment, but I got excited when I would have a new "aha" moment in subsequent playthroughs. That being said, I'm one of those nuts with 600 hours in the game, so what do I know ;)

Out of fifteen people I’ve gifted this game to, only three beat the first miniboss. Out of those three, only one beat the game. I'll never understand why replayability is considered so important to a game's quality. Some of my favorite games of all time have literally no replayability (Outer Wilds (outside of getting the surprirsingly creative trophies, Return of the Obra Dinn, Ghost Trick) There's nothing wrong with a one and done experience. But that's just my opinion. There's nothing wrong with a game having replayability, (I've done like 8 runs of Elden Ring, including a Spongebob run where I can only use bubble spells and the jellyfish summon and a Wolverine run where I can only use the claws and passive regen but no flasks. But I only did Sekiro 2 times, once for my blind playthrough, and once for trophy cleanup using a save backup to get the Shura ending and then keep going. And I'm fully satisfied.
TL;DR: Lack of replayability is not a detriment to a game and can even improve it.

    • @DemonLordRaiden

I think it's more a value per dollar thing. Obra Dinn, for example, is $20 for approx. 5 hours of gameplay, whereas Sekiro is $60 for approx. 30 hours. You're literally getting more value per dollar in Sekrio, but Obra Dinn is 1/3 the price, so it doesn't feel as bad to have a shorter or a one-off experience. Now obviously that doesn't bother everyone, I'd wager it's closer to a 50/50, but it is a fair concert given economic instability these days.

I feel like the reason why most people don't recommend Sekiro to Elden Ring players is because the game is nothing like Elden Ring. There are some similarities, but the game is essentially not even the same genre as Elden Ring. If someone wants more Elden Ring, you'll recommend Souls and Souls-likes, but Sekiro is not really a Souls-like.

Aaaaa rlly need to mention the Shinobi prosthetic, it incentivizes a second playthrough or so as it’s a crucial part of the combat system that can really transform a fight beyond just rhythmic deflects and attacks….turns that rhythm into a rock song.
Also yes, Sekiro is more of a eastern mythology Zelda game more than a RPG that SoulsBorne games are. I keep coming back for the world as it’s so engrossing, the level design, so many secrets & quest lines I’d miss, the lore and the story….a spectacle like Owl, just can’t get this fix elsewhere ❤️🙏

After watching the whole thing, i agree with i think every point made, I only differ on the fact that i don't personally mind being able to have easier successive playthroughs, because I've already put in the work. It makes it feel more like being the hero in a book you've already read, knowing the journey doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

It also fits the lore more that you're actually beating everyone and not just dying 50 times to Genichiro or Demon of Hatred hahaha

So with your first point, I can concede that you never get that same first game again, but you can still get unique experiences with things like the demon bell, kuro's charm, and the boss rushes

I do wanna say the reason most people are pointed towards Dark Souls instead of Sekiro after Elden Ring is because Dark Souls is more like Elden in mechanics than Sekiro is

This was my first FromSoft game. And I’m merely waiting for the right time to play through it again. Feeling like a ninja badass never gets old

For me the replayvalue came from the boss and enemy designs. Sekiro has easily From's best bosses so far, especially once the final updates dropped, and the game is rather satisfying to play on the highest NG+ cycle without Kuro's charm. It further reinforces that idea of focused play. But you do replay Ashina Castle 3 times every full playthrough, and even redo the early area again too, making the game feel rather short. The combat arts and tools give a bit of variety to the gameplay, the spear being my favourite, but they're still not full on secondary movesets and instead just cool extra moves. That small player moveset does affect the overall replayability too.

having just beat the game recently myself, this game is great and deserves more recognition... this is the definition of get good and will give you the best rush when you beat each boss.

Sekiro's verticality and the deflects are so enjoyable! I'm having a blast playing it. Dying a lot (Genichiro took me 37 tries :D) but still enjoying just as much hehe
Does anyone know of games with similar mechanics? Like being able to deflect (almost) everything?

And then there's me, with more than 2000+ hours of gametime
and I keep coming back to Sekiro every 2-3 months to start it allover again.
And it never gets old tbh.

Sekiro is the real Git Gud video game. In Dark Soul/Elden Ring, the fastest you kill the enemy is the better. In Sekiro, consistency to response the enemy is better feeling.
