Blackie is among the greatests lyricists in Metal. Think about how many songs he has written, not just for WASP but as a "shadow writer" for Capital Records, not to mention the Killer Kane material.
Sori, I was shedding tears with you and then Lead Guitarist Doug Blair's ability to draw out so much Emotion in his solos... amazing.
No band, and I mean not one single band on the face of this earth, displays more emotion in their music like W.A.S.P. Blackie is an absolute genius!
WASP was a fun band when he was all about the party life. But when the band got serious? Blackie became a lyrical genius. I love both old and new WASP. My favorite is still I'm blind in Texas.

Some of you may have noticed, over the last several tours, we no longer play ANIMAL. I'd like to address that now.
I became a Born Again Christian when I was 11 years old. All throughout my teens I went to church. Nobody made me go, I went because I wanted to. As I got into my later teens, I started to become driven by my own ego, but also I felt like something was missing. I felt like I was being indoctrinated by other people's thinking. In other words, I was listening to the "Gospel" according to "them". I thought in many ways it was hypocritical, and I became really confused.
So I left the church, and for years I went as far away as you could go. I even studied the occult. Now where I come from, that's a million miles away from the church!! After about 3 years I stopped messing around with all that "magic junk", because I realized I was just swapping one form of religion for another. I'll explain more later.
So I left that, and started down a path that would take me the next 20 years to figure out. In that time, circumstances happened where someone was trying to really hurt my father. These people were in effect, attempting to take away everything in the world he had. Not just his money, but his dignity. They were also trying to publicly humiliate him. This I could NOT stand by and just watch. After repeated attempts to try and get these people to go away, they WOULD NOT LISTEN!!
I was in the middle of making an album when a decision had to be made that would change my life. I had put into motion a plan to go after the main person responsible for all of this misery to my father. After several months, it came to a point where a decision had to be made, and I was to make that phone call to make that plan happen. Everything was ready to go, all I had to do was make that call.
It was on a Sunday night, 9·30 in the evening. I was driving and stopped at a stoplight. I DID NOT want to make that phone call!! I sat there at that stoplight. I slowly started to do something I had not done for 20 years - I started to pray. I asked God to "take this cup from me, for I DO NOT want it". I truly did not want to be responsible for that person's "blood on my hands". If you've ever loved someone so much (which I do my father), then I hope you can understand how desperate I had become. I think though, most people, if they're pushed far enough, can become capable of doing things they would never even think of. This is where I was.
The next morning the phone rang about 10 AM. It was my father's lawyer. He says, "I don't know what you did to these people, but they are dropping EVERYTHING against your father!"
I laid there in the bed... stunned!! No phone call was made, no threats were attempted against them. I did do something to them alright ; I PRAYED!!
Over the next few years, I started slowly coming back to my faith, to where I am now.
I thank God for that miracle!!
But that wasn't the only thing that happened. There were many, many other things, although seemingly not as dramatic to the outside world, but nonetheless, really important to me that slowly started bringing me back to my Christian faith.
I then realized, in all those years I was going around thinking I was mad at God because of what I had referred to earlier as hypocrisy in the church. Then I realized, I was not mad at God, I was mad at MAN!!
Mad at all the indoctrination BECAUSE, I was not thinking AND reading the Bible for myself!! So that's what I started doing. I'm much, much happier now because I'm truly at peace.
I don't want to preach to anyone here. I'm just sharing with you what happened to me. If you've ever read any interviews I've done, you know I've said over and over again, THINK FOR YOURSELF, and, the person you are today IS NOT the person you will be 5 years from now.
As far as faith goes, things you may not even want to think about now, may become a huge part of your life later on down the line. It was for me!!
I mentioned studying the occult earlier. This is something I'd like to address, as in this genre of metal music, there are a phenomenal amount of references to the occult. What seems harmless on the surface can sometimes have tragic consequences. One thing I've learned from both my faith (and life in general) is that there are only 2 forces in this world. They are either positive or negative, and there is NOTHING in between. Some refer to them as either good or evil. Whatever you wish to call it, that's the ONLY two choices we have in life.
In my time studying the occult, I found it to be incredibly destructive, because you're dealing with a negative force. I had a friend of mine who came to me and asked if he could use some of the occult symbols I had used in the group Sister. They were symbols that we used in our logo, and he wanted to know if I was going to use them anymore, and if not, could he use them. I told him that I would never again use those symbols, and that he could use whatever he liked, BUT, it was important for him to understand what he was dealing with and the power behind that negativity. He said he did not care, and I said, "Okay, but you've been warned, because nobody messes with this stuff without paying the price."
But he used those symbols anyway, and his band would go on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, BUT, devastating tragedy followed them from the very beginning, and continued throughout their entire career.
The famous blues guitarist Robert Johnson wrote a song called CROSSROADS, where he sold his soul to the Devil for fame. I don't need to exaggerate here. Stories like this have been told a million times... and for good reason!!
Just something for you to think about. Try it on.... see if it fits!!
It's been a strange journey, this crazy life of mine. In the song MY WAY, Frank Sinatra says, "Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention". That sums up pretty well how I feel about my life.
I look back on a couple of my ancestors and wonder what they thought about their lives in relationship to their fame. My great, great Grandfather was General Sam Houston. For those of you outside the United States, he was one of the founders of the Republic of Texas before it became a state. It's where the city of Houston gets its name. My great Grandfather too, was an artist. He painted the first Coca-Cola sign. It's the trademark logo you now see EVERYWHERE! Anywhere I go in any part of the world, I can see his work. I must say it makes me proud.
I often times think about what they may have thought concerning the things they accomplished and the fame they acquired. I do not see myself with their level of notoriety, but I do feel that sometimes I can get a glimpse of what they may have been thinking.
I've spent much of my career asking the same question, and it's what I believe creates the single greatest bond between me and all of you which is : Who am I, and where am I going?
Even from the beginning I was asking with I WANNA BE SOMEBODY, and then "Who am I" in THE INVISIBLE BOY. I believe it's that ONE common thread why W·A·S·P fans are attracted to my writings. You can see this question is asked on every album we ever made.
It's all about the journey. The "quest", if you like!! For me... I've found it. I hope you can too!
So for now, this journey has come to an end. It's been a privilege sharing all this with you over the last year or so. Some people still ask me, "Hey, why don't you write a book?"
Well, in some ways here, I have. Honestly, to go any further into detail of other people's lives (which is what you have to do to write a book) is not something I'm interested in, because it could possibly end up hurting them. I figure, if it's anybody you'd be interested in reading about anyway, then they can write their own book and tell you whatever sordid, intimate details they want you to know about themselves!!
I now find myself asking what the next 30 years will bring? What will be next? How long will it last?
God ONLY knows. And I figure, He'll let me know when He's ready!

Don't thank me, and definitely do not "God bless" me. I do not subscribe to that nonsense.
I posted this testimony form BL because I thought Vin & Sori would find it of interest, not only the fact BL went back to his religious upbringing but especially circumstances of how. I personally found it interesting and a little fascinating, but it was nothing but a strange coincidence that BL "prayed" and then his father's problems all just went away like magic.
For all anyone knows, word got out to the scumbags that BL had his "plan" in place and it was just one phone call away from being put into action, and that is why the scumbags backed off BL's father. It was no reason to go back to a pack of lies like religion.
I personally find myself extremely disappointed that more and more "rebels" in the rock & roll field (especially the articulate and intelligent ones who have demonstrated more intellectual insight and objectivity than anyone else, including an bunch of hoity-toity "highly educated" types) are getting sucked back into such blatant propaganda as religion.
People who turn to a crutch like religion ultimately fail at life - and I am not talking of success like careers and acquisition of wealth & fame (that's an entirely different form of "success/failure"), I am talking about finding one's way through this hazardous existence from cradle to grave without becoming just another sadistic predator or perpetual victim - so when they fail to figure out how to maintain such a balance and be content with contentment in lieu of outright blissful happiness, they sell out, and turn (back) to some form of organized religion. Cos it's "safe". Cos it's "familiar". Cos it's "comfortable". Cos it's "easy" (easier than finding strength within one's own self and persevering on one's own rather than seeking it from outside sources that have their own insidious agendas).
Cos it's a CRUTCH.
Safe. Familiar. Comfy. Easy.
It's also weak and pathetic.
It's no different than numbing emotional/psychological/physical pain with drugs and alcohol. It's a CRUTCH, and crutches are for CRIPPLES. Not strong independent people who can stand on their own two feet. It doesn't really do or accomplish anything beyond self-deception. Bullshitting oneself into bliss.
For me, NO THANKS. I'd rather be miserable in UGLY TRUTH than hiding behind false gods and believing in silly fairy tales, simply cos it's "easier".
Life is hard. I'm not gonna retreat into self-deception via religious doctrine that instructs people to go against every natural instinct and impulse that are NOT destructive or harmful, yet abiding and even condoning the ones that are. There ARE NO SAFE SPACES in life.
I do not see the point in worshipping hypocrites and sadistic liars, and it's even more insane when such beings do not even actually exist to begin with.
I already ranted about this foolishness in my previous comment before this "BL return to faith" story.
But one last point : I don't know why people are in such desperate need to have something "beyond this life" to look forward to? To require some deep and profound "meaning" to life? What is so great about this life? It's nothing but pain and suffering, evil and wickedness (thanks to the weak human condition and its penchant for believing in fairy tales and perpetuating those beliefs so as to control/manipulate others), not to mention hypocrisy and deception to boot (that's religion).
We live, we die, that's IT. There's nothing more. The best you can hope for is that your animistic ENERGY (not "soul", not "spirit") will be transferred into another conception of life and you get to do this nightmare all over again. Or maybe you'll just haunt a house. Or maybe you'll come back as animal or insect and be mistreated even worse than we humans mistreat each other.
We live, we die, that's IT. And I'm FINE with that. In fact, I sincerely hope MY energy will be the first to genuinely "fizzle out" and END, and NOT transfer anywhere (although that haunting thing might be alright - poltergeist level). I never wanna do this "life" thing ever again in any form, let alone some bullshit "everlasting life".
No matter how much of a "bad place" I find myself in, I will NEVER turn to some "God". I either help myself, help from other tangible sources, or get no help at all. THAT is REAL LIFE.
Praying does not work. It's a pacifying deception of the self.

Mm.. I dunno about all that... I'm not "one of" anyone/anything.
I am and have always been a lone wolf who never fit in anywhere or with anyone.
It took a long time for me to finally accept that and come to terms with it, but I got there. I suspect a lot more people are the same way - maybe not meant to be complete loners all the way, but definitely not meant to be just another cog in a machine, either.
I see too many people being consumed by whatever identity group they align themselves with, and they completely lose all sense of who they are (or were) as individuals, cos they becomes "one of" something. They forget how to think for themselves. They forget how to disagree. They forget how to recognize when something is simply not right and PROTEST it, no matter WHAT group proclaims or preaches it. They forget how to self-examine and check themselves. They assume they belong to a can-do-no-wrong club and so critical & objective thinking is not required. And then I begin to wonder how much is genuine "forgetting" and how much is consciously CHOOSING... cos if they fuck up or get caught, they just "blame it" on their groupthink... whether it's "I was following orders" or "I was doing God's work!", or whatever - all these identity groups come with a convenient "it wasn't my fault / get out of responsibility / avoid accountability" card.
That just makes me all the more resolved NOT to belong anywhere. I reject all labels except the occasional ones I choose myself. for comparative purposes ; and that's only to give people an IDEA of who/what I am and where I stand on things (cos apparently to claim being completely independent of any identity is beyond their scope of comprehension). I will say I am LIKE a certain group or I LEAN TOWARD their philosophies, but I am NOT "one of" them.
The only group I cannot deny being "one of" is human beings, or the human race... but even THAT, I want to separate from, cos humans disgust me more and more every day. So stupid and gullible and naive, so selfish and destructive (to themselves as well as others)... I don't wanna be any part of that.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Lawless is referring to Mötley Crüe.
One of the symbols that Sister used was the pentagram (I did not see many others), and in the beginning (if not all their career), Crüe also used the pentagram. Not a Seal of Baphomet with any other symbols around it (at the 5 points, and the goat's face fitted within the star), but just the inverted star in a circle.
And we ALL know how much "devastating tragedy" Crüe had, with all the drugs and the booze and the arrests and other "decadent debauchery" & insanity, and that was partly what made them one of the "biggest bands" worldwide. Even if you did not listen to their music, or even metal in general, you heard of the band and their exploits.
I resent the hell out of blaming any (use of) stupid symbols on all that. That "tragedy" was not the result of using occult symbols, that was the result of POOR CHOICES. Fuck I hate when people blame outside elements and forces for their own stupidity and recklessness, for their own CHOICES.
I could be wrong, and maybe it was not Crüe he was referring to, but that doesn't even matter. Who the band is/was, is NOT important. The point I made about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY for one's own choices and actions (and NOT attributing any fortune or misfortune to anything else) is what is important.
I could start a band whose entire image consists of devils and demons and occult symbology, but that does NOT prevent me from doing kindnesses and/or being a GOOD person wit ha strong moral compass. It also does NOT compel me to commit acts of harm and destruction. I CHOOSE. I always have the power to choose. WE ALL have that power. But so many SURRENDER that power to some pack of superstitious horseshit. Why? To avoid being held accountable, when/if things turn to shit, when/if a "mistake" is made.
Lawless was right about one thing, that there are 2 definite energies/forces in the world ; positive and negative. But he was wrong to say there is no in-between. There is ALWAYS a spectrum in between two poles, two extremes, two definitives. That is what is called BALANCE. And all that this-side/that-side, all-or-nothing absolutism is what is wrong with so many religions and belief systems ; they never offer nor provide for any BALANCE. You are either all-in or all-out - no "in between".
I say fuck that noise.
Giving up one's power to choose (apart for choosing what "side" to go "all-in" with) is what happens from having no balance. Suddenly there is no more careful consideration of choices, no cautious contemplation of consequences ; everything is pre-packed from a cookie-cutter concept, and it's "one size fits all", one answer for everything. No consideration for (extenuating) circumstances, no exceptions. Just "black & white" with "no in-between" (shades of gray).
Again, I say fuck that noise.
Perhaps on some deep, sub-conscious level, that's why/how I chose my name... I am FAR from being any kind of "white light" of positivity, but despite heavy leanings to the contrary, I am also not completely pitch black darkness... I am just "black enough".
It must have been an amazing moment when his father realized that the suffering he went through had a purpose, that it helped to bring his son back to Christ. We know that all things work together for good to those that love God.

W.A.S.P. has been a long time favorite. They have epic concept albums, and this is another! Blackie Lawless was raised in a Christian home, but left it behind until 2010. They aren't a "Christian" band, but as you can see, their faith is expressed in their song writing. Sori you are so right, love your emotion and insight on the ultimate sacrifice.
The greatest gospel verse in the bible 2nd Corinthians 5:21 says “He made Him who knew no sin…sin for us, so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him”
In so many words God treated Jesus like He had committed every sin ever committed by every person who would ever believe though, in fact, He committed none of them!
Hanging on the cross He was Holy, harmless, undefiled. Hanging on the cross He was a spotless lamb. He was never for a split second a sinner. He was Holy God on a cross. God is treating Him, to put it more practically, like he was living my life! God punished Jesus for my sin then turns around and treats me as if I lived His life!
What you get is complete forgiveness covered by the righteousness of Jesus Christ. When God looks at the cross he sees you, when He looks at you he sees Christ!

One of my favorite songs from Blackie. It's 9/11 that got Blackie to rethink what he wanted to be.
The only worthwhile thing to think about with regard to 9/11 is the evidence gathered by ae911truth.org. Once we can get our collective heads around the truth, then we can start writing songs about the event. Until then, it's all just based on lies and propaganda.

W.A.S.P. is an interesting band that has gone through a lot of different phases throughout their career. Their first three albums was pretty much straight up party records that caused a lot of controversy in the 1980's. Including the song "F**k like a Beast" you mentioned in the video. Since then most of their albums have been more serious, many of them tackling politics and social issues. The singer and songwriter, Blackie, is a very intelligent guy with a lot of interesting things to say.
I really think you guys would appreciate the songs Unholy Terror and Charisma. The two songs are tied together, with Unholy Terror acting like an intro to Charisma. Someone made a lyrical video that combines them called "The truth behind the lyrics". It's really well made and it would be cool to see your reaction to it.
Rasmus Eklund you nailed it. I've seen WASP four or five times starting from 1984 and knew they was something different about them. Blackie is a very talented musician and songwriter. Through all of the changes and band members he has kept progressing. I read that he doesn't tour in the US anymore, so it will be a slim chance to see them live again, but I feel very fortunate to have seen them from the beginning.

@@FreeMTrider Wow! I'm very jealous that you got to see them in the 80's! That's awesome! I was born in 1986 so I missed out on that time period. I have, however, seen them multiple times since 2004. They put on a great show every time. The highlight was probably in 2007 when they played the whole Crimson Idol record. It's kind of crazy that he's still going after all those years!
Yeah, I've also heard that he doesn't tour the US anymore. From what I understand it has to do with low ticket sales and being screwed by a couple of promoters. It's a shame if that's true. And kind of weird since they are still very popular here in Europe.
Blackie makes music after where he is at the moment. Never been afraid to take a risk with his lyrics and direction of the music. Love and admire that so much about Blackie. Imagine Hearing Golgotha live with the music video playing on 3 screens behind the band at stage . So powerful,moving and magical. ❤❤

I gotta say, I never thought I'd see someone cry because of a W.A.S.P. song, but it is a very passionate song! Its curious Vin. You and I seem to see the world pretty much the same: its a cesspool. Somehow you find a way to love people in spite of all the shit they do. Me, I just hate them, lol. Anyway, great review for a song that even as a non-Christian Ive always loved.

Try ”The Horror” by WASP as a comparison. I find it to be one of the darkest and most unpleasant songs ever written. Something special about that song for sure.

I love this young ladies passion when it comes to this song. I was raised in a very religious home and Herb every sermon possible but when she made that comment about how Jesus said today you will be with me in Paradise well being crucified, that hit me. I always feel too busy to do some things and I tend to put people to the side but some reason her words really spoke to me

remembering when I first heard this epic life changing song, just 6 months ago. "Golgotha" means "hill of the skull" just so you know. this is where "king david" buried "goliath's skull", and later where Jesus was crucified. So the verse about Jesus bruising his heel crushing the serpents head has a bigger meaning. this is also why he said show me all Golgotha is mine in the song. Christ sacrificing His all at the alter of freedom giving us salvation. thank you for reviewing this, thanks to wasp for performing, and thank you God for all you did, and that finally there is great Christian metal song.

This song always brings me to tears,
Blackie was raised as a Christian by Christian parents but revolted against them as teenagers do. He lost his faith and became one of the most outrageous rockstars there was in the eightiees eating raw meat on stage, threw take blood on the audience and sang songs about f### like a beast. He has since a few years back found his way back to his faith and never performs the worst songs live anymore. He even rewrote the whole album The Crimson Idol and re realeased it without the swearing and other bad words. This whole album "Golgotha" is by the way the best album they put out in over 25 years. It is a fantastic album from start to finish.

This was really surprising to me. All I've ever known of Wasp was their song "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" and only because of the PMRC's "filthy fifteen" in the 80's. Obviously they got a lot deeper than I ever gave them credit for.

I've been listening to W.A.S.P. since I discovered them back in the 80's and they have always been one of my favorite bands. Blackie Lawless was actually raised Christian. He came from a strict fundamentalist Baptist family in Staten Island and was very active in the church until his late teens when he when he strayed and became interested in the occult, but has returned to his Christian faith in recent years and considers himself born again. He got into a fight and was stabbed at age thirteen and was sent to a military academy as punishment for a two year sentence. He was expelled from the academy 18 months later when he assaulted a sergeant major. He started his music career in 1975 and the band W.A.S.P. in 1982. I've watched several interviews of him in the past and present and he always seems to be very personable and easy going. Other songs to react to would be "The Headless Children", "On Your Knees", and "The Idol".
