► THE WHARFEDALE EVO 4.1 REVIEW
The entry level and budget audio market is a competitive one. Nowadays it’s pretty easy to find a decent bookshelf speaker. If you are on the hunt for bookshelf speakers under 1000, you could do worse than starting your search with a pair of Wharfedale speakers. The beautifully made Wharfedale Evo 4.1 bookshelf speakers would make a fantastic addition to any budding audiophile system. Their use of an AMT tweeter may not be for everyone but I admit they finally made me like a speaker with one!

I think AMTs do great to add definition to sounds that live on the mids adding environmental sounds. String scratches, rim hits that kind of thing. They seem to do best at a low to moderate volume to me. Mostly they make up for some really muddy woofers and bad crossover designs. As you get older, a little spice is needed in that top range to cut through the ear damage and might be why you see a particular demographic that raves about them. This might just be why Andrew is starting to change his opinion. Just poking fun. #socksandsandels

@Douglas Blake I agree with the idea that they can sound unmatched in the cabinet. I lived with a Simi horn loaded pair for a couple of weeks and it seems to lessen the bite while giving a better horizontal off-axis. I don't own a pair so I guess I didn't like it that much.

The AMT is polyurethane coated aramid paper, colour tints can be added but the cost is exponential, I personally like it as it's a clear hint at the mechanics and engineering that has gone into the component

I was lucky enough to audition the EVO 4.3 and Lumina III back to back in NYC. In the end the midrange and bass (in addition to dare I say a more elegant finish) pushed the EVO to be my winner. Evo and Lumina are so similar in treble, clarity, and soundstage that in the end paying $500 more the Sonus Faber felt downright silly. I have had the Evo 4.3 for 2 months now and I am completely floored and in love with them. Love them!!
What about my amp you say? After I settled on the Evo 4.3 I bought , demoed at home, and returning the Marantz 8006, Audiolab 6000a, Musical Fidelity m2si, Musical Fidelity m3si, and Yamaha 801. Finally I have settled on the Cambridge CXA81 and find its sound to be an incredible match to the Wharfdale Evo 4.3. The CXA 81 has now replaced my old Rega Brio (also a good amp). The soundstage, detail, and way the CXA 81 drives the Evo 4.3 is totally what I have been looking for. I listen through my node 2i and Rega RP6, mostly Jazz, Rock, and R&B. If you can afford the CXA 81 and Evo 4.3, stop looking and buy them and DON'T spend more. :-)
Thanks for the great reviews Andrew! Reviews are always engaging and insightful. Appreciate ya

4.1s are maybe the best value in the series, I was going to get them for too small room. Apparently they have better coherence and blend between the drivers ( it's hard to blend in the midrange dome properly, and it can sound to aggressive on some songs).

Loved your review of the EVO 4.1. I have Diamond 10.2 now and am considering the EVO 4.2. I like the AMT and used to own ESS Heil PS-8a in the 80s. I liked them. I actually bi-wire my current Wharfedales, for my room, it adds depth to the sound stage. Subjective, hard to measure for sure, but my room and my ears. I'm also using a Schiit Loki to tune the EQ for certain recordings. Especially ones that are really bright. Happy listening!

Just taken delivery of a pair of Evo 4.3s (2 days ago), and after the 2 day "burn - in" period, i've got to say that i'm loving the AMT. The Evos have replaced a pair of Mission MX3s, that, apart from the tweeter and the dedicated midrange driver of the Wharfedales, have very similar specs to the Evos. But the Evo 4.3s win the argument hands down.

2 reviewers is always better than one! It is fun to have a conversation about the esthetics of audio products. Most companies don't care about esthetic or pay too much attention to it . Sonus Faber always looks fabulous but I also want the best sound with the high price tag. The best tweeter I heard was made by Philips for a Telefunken speaker. It was the perfect mix of clarity and extension without harshness or sibilance. I never heard an AMT tweeter yet. I'm an AMT virgin!

  • @terryyee4271

I just bought these a few months ago for my first setup. With a sub, they're excellent for me. I personally like AMT tweeters, as some aluminum ones can have harsh highs. I never noticed the color. I think it provides good contrast (at least for the black/white models), but maybe it's because I'm not a veteran audiophile that looks at a ton of speakers. The best speakers I've ever heard were the Monitor Audio Gold 100, which also have AMT's and pushed me in that direction.

I love ribbon and AMT tweeters. The most resolving high end drivers IMHO. A good dome is nice too, but nothing provides the clear, clean high end of a ribbon. I have Wharfedale EVO 4.2's and love them. The soft-dome mid mates with the AMT like butter.

While out reviewing Elac Ref speakers I came across your Evo's and found that I actually liked their looks and especially the AMT's. The AMT Evos I saw were not bright yellow but more of a beigey brown color. They seem to blend in with the walnut cabinets and added character that I found not only pleasing but added more of a dynamic look that is missing on most book shelf speakers. I think that your comment " AMT's demand that one looks at me" actually adds to the attractiveness of these speakers! What happened to me is when looking at speakers with round dome tweeters, they became rather non event and lacked character. I didn't care if the grills were on or off? The Evo's definitely look better with the grills off! Nothing like a little dynamic character that is added at no extra cost!

To your question regarding AMT tweeters, I absolutely love them. I find them to be airy; in that they allow for great high end detail retrieval and transparency without being fatiguing to my ears. Mind you, my experience with AMT tweeters have been with Adam, Eve, and HEDD AMT tweeters. I did try ELAC FS 407 towers as well but they were definitely a bit harsh. Adam speakers are known to have more pronounced highs while Eve monitors are less aggressive but neither sounded fatiguing to me. Actually, quite the opposite. The specific tweeter design I dislike are horn-loaded tweeters. Mind you, my sample size is 5 or so speakers with this design so maybe my sample size isn’t large enough.

I would compare the EVO 4.1 speakers to the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ speakers. The both have kevlar drivers and AMT tweeters, and they have a similar sound signature. The EVOs have a richer sound and better bass. I didn't feel like I am missing anything without a sub. The Emotivas have a big bump around 50Hz, they need to be behind a high pass crossover to fix that, especially when paired with a sub. The EVOs pair with well with the Keces E40 integrated amp (search RUclips for reviews). I run the EVO, Keces combo with Topping DACs E30, D70s and D90. The sound is very good with any of those DACs, but it does noticeably improve as the quality of the DAC improves. I have too much brown toned wood, so the white oak really pops in my room.

    Hi Andrew, good review.
Regarding AMT tweeters, they are one of the best I have heard, of course not all of them are perfect, but if they are properly implemented and coupled with correct mid drivers, cabinet and X-overs, then you will be treated with beautiful sound and presentation. 🙂

I ended up buying the Wharfedale Evo 4.1's about 12 months ago, and I am really happy with them. They still have that Wharfedale signature I like, but they are a little more lively on the top end, I think a lot was borrowed from the Elysian range in the Evo range. They are really great. I am considering getting a set of Evo 4.2's to go on the front and move the 4.1's to surround. I have found with most music, a sub woofer is not needed, but in movie use a sub woofer would be advantageous. I have paired these with a Wharfedale Diamond Sub 150 that I have had for many years and they just work well together. I find the 4.1's do disappear into the room and don't sound like sound coming from and between two speakers. The vertical axis drops off quickly, but the horizontal is pretty wide, and if you speakers are placed correctly, they really image beautifully and just disappear. I am still on the fence about buying a centre speaker, as these center image so well.
I agree they look better without the grill, but that yellow is a bit ..... distracting. amt tweeters need to be a ribbon, and on the walnut finish they are least distracting, but that colour will always distract I feel.

  • @amdenis
    @amdenis 3 года назад +3

Many AMT’s are poorly implanted, virtually all dome tweeters are even less musical. However EMT has the potential for much better range, dispersion, phase coherence and overall musicality than most other designs. We now use several types of EMT style monitors in our studio and some in my home, including some Monitor Audio PL200 II and a pair of Elysian’s- both of which replaced some more expensive traditional dome tweeter monitors that I had for years. The issue with EMT is generally the implementation and integration, not the core architecture of EMT, while the issue with most tradition tweeters IS the core architecture. And I still do have traditional monitor designs as well, including Focal and Barefoot. However, their strength is not their HF implementation.

Nice review Andrew. Remember that most solid state amps with power up to 35 watts RMS will drive these speakers at modest volumes. It’s just that when you want to really hear well recorded music with large dynamic peaks they may struggle to bring out the best in them, or any similarly specced speakers.

Great video, as usual..........BUT! The complaining about the AMT was a bit much; I get it, they are weird looking, but it is what it is. I was a big fan of AMTs back in the day when a speaker company named ESS made the Heil Air Motion Driver..........basically an AMT. It sounded great, especially in a three-way system with a 15 inch woofer. I haven't heard any new ones lately, but I'm sure they have improved since 1980. I have a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 11.2 speakers of a similar design to the Evo, and they are built really well, and sound great. Keep up the great work, and show some love for those AMTs!

The bigger Evo 4.4 seem to have a slighter darker walnut finish which I loved but for the 4.1 it seems like the walnut finish was lighter. Really wanted the white finish to go with my black and white setup but it's not available in my region. Using a NAD 3020 v1 with a edifies T5 sub as of now.
