My employer and personal policy for a system like that is to advise the customer that while it only needs a capacitor, it's old, in real rough shape and should be replaced. We can't warranty anything but the part and we might be back out real soon for something else. Want a 2nd opinion? No hard feelings, I put everything back the way I found it. Sometimes I'll flip the disconnect because I have a safety concern but I always tell the customer exactly that and they can put it back if they want. Huge difference between disabling and sabotaging a machine. I would never ever ever just take parts. Would love to see you testify against that guy in court.
Multiply the full load amps by 2,650. Divide this number by the supply voltage. The full load amps and the supply voltage can be found on the units tag. The resulting number is the MicroFarad of the capacitor you need. An MFD is a unit of electrical capacitance and will be written on the capacitor or its packaging. You can round up or down 10 percent to match the number to a capacitor size that is available. (This is a general estimate, not an exact figure.)
No, this is not correct. If one used this method, you would dramatically oversize the run capacitor and would cause premature failure of the motor. Use the manufacturer's label to determine proper size or check the service facts.
This formula gives you the capacitance of whatever capacitor is installed. It’s how I test one under load. It doesn’t give you what the unit requires though. Go by manufacturer spec.
@@fidelmireles6044 You measure amp draw from the compressor wire connected to "herm" on the capacitor. Then you measure voltage from "herm" to "c" on the capacitor. Now multiply the Amp draw by 2,652. Then take that number and divide it by the measured voltage. That will give you the measured capacitance under load.

Hey Steve, you know this, but just a word of advice to the young guys out there. When I was working, I would make it a point to take a sharpie and mark the inside of the panel with the cap specs. The company that I retired from used the R Michel co. for a primary supplier, a few times I didn't know what size the run cap was. Called them and they were able to look it up. Good job, I think we all have run across this at one point or another.
Steve you could have sold him the fan motor also , but you chose to be an upstanding person and just replaced the fan blade that was bad. You gained a customer for life. honest people will always win.
This hack tried to screw the customer over big time to make just one big dollar sale. That guy will never get that persons business again. And when the customer goes to breakfast at the local diner he's going to let it be known to all the grumpy old men what a hack the guy is. The best advice for every business owner is to be honest and fair. When you live and work with that principal, customers will come back time and time again. That is where your business succeeds long term. Great job Steve!

"you need a whole new unit".... that's why they live in big homes and drive the latest work vehicles.... some trades people are just in it for the money and when they know the customer has no idea then they get on that gravy train and ride it.
Unbelieveable what people will do to make a sale I run into this crap ALL THE TIME working behind the local Motorola dealer here. They condemn a whole radio system over a blown fuse hoping the customer is gullible enough to NOT get a second opinion and to buy their newest thing.. It's ridiculous. And they do the same shit here too, steal the blown fuse or whatever so I have to go dig up a service manual and HOPE it's the right revision to get the proper fuse in and then start working on the system..
Crooks in the industry is why I'm a DIY'er. Watched RUclips videos for a year and then installed two 3.5 ton units in my house. Saved myself about $10k.
Nice! I was thinking throw a 40-45 in it and see what happens. I thought my neighbor was using a power saw building something in his garage for a month or so. Turns out an animal must have gotten into my unit and bent the refrigerant lines and they were vibrating together sounding like a circular saw until it ate a hole in my lines. My next step is to get me a set of gauges and a tank so I can top off my own systems.
Hey I know this is random... I have this exact same unit and I literally need a new fan blade. Do you remember what the part number was for the blade? My units model number is so sun faded I can't figure it out. I know this is a hail Mary but kenmore is no help to me
First the fan motor next is the compressor . Once it starts leaking it toast .not worth fixing . Besides R22 is not being used or very expensive now . The same thing happing with R410A the price and supply's is low at supply houses . No piston A coils just TXV coils . And some of the condensers are hard too find now too .
That condenser coil was a mess. What did the contactor terminals look like? That unit looks old. Good thing it was just the fan blade. You're gonna be back there soon for more parts. Hope you ready for the after hours calls on that one.
Just looked at a commercial unit,10 ton unit, company told the woman it was done, nothing they could do,so after I got it back up and running,I told her she needed to do some pm work, but it's gonna last a few more years! They wanted 15 grand to replace it
Some of these companies train their employees to upsell , they have to or they wont meet their overhead lifestyle especially if they have office sitting owners . The margin for profit for repairs you did is profitable for you but alotta these other companies with multiple techs its not enough profit for time spent especially on that older unit So if its not a cap replacement hit and run its not worth it for them so techs are coached size up situation quickly and offer a complete change and move to next customers Sad but true and most wont admit it
Sad but true about just trying to sell new equipment rather than fix older stuff. Several companies in my area that advertise like crazy on tv and are know for this kind of mode of operation. Sell rather than fix.
Steve you do great work and it was definitely wrong for the last company to take the cap but in this specific instance I wouldn’t say someone is trying to rip off that guy by selling him a new system. I make more money doing repairs than installs less time & less aggravation.
Also if it's a Copeland just give them the model serial number they can tell you what size capacitor to use.(of the compressor)

Stay safe.
Retired (werk'n)keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses.
FYI. You can take a cold chisel and notch the hub in three places to the blade to get through on a weekend. I’ve done it many times in an emergency.
That’s just messed up! All it needed was a fan blade and cap? We’ll the cap wasn’t his fault so really just a blade. Thanks Steve I watch your videos a lot because I notice you fix what needs to be fixed and let the costumer make a choice if they just want a new product. Good stuff, and it teaches me what to look for if someone is trying to rip me off. "It’s gonna cost more in parts and labor" what the flip!!!!
You are an honest good person Steve. You just earned a customer for life and anyone they speak to for a reference.
The old Kenmore took a beating and keep on ticking good honest job steve.
Good enough for this neighborhood 😂
Your puppy and you have a wonderful bond! You didn’t secure that capacitor so hot Steve.
I would have used a cable tie, at least
I hope MJ Heating & Air gets ripped off worse than they tried to rip off that home owner. Stealing a capacitor and telling the guy he needs a new unit. How low!
Good, honest job Steve and Miss Molly. This guy is going to be a repeat customer. Well done.
Love your channel brother, I do route work too, in the telecomm industry, some of the things I see other industry "professionals" do astounds me when I go behind them to fix their shitty work.
Your honesty is refreshing.
MJ heating and air conditioning are bastards
Hey Steve, you know this, but just a word of advice to the young guys out there. When I was working, I would make it a point to take a sharpie and mark the inside of the panel with the cap specs. The company that I retired from used the R Michel co. for a primary supplier, a few times I didn't know what size the run cap was. Called them and they were able to look it up. Good job, I think we all have run across this at one point or another.
Steve you could have sold him the fan motor also , but you chose to be an upstanding person and just replaced the fan blade that was bad. You gained a customer for life. honest people will always win.
We need more business man like you.
I do my my best to have a customer happy before I leave a call. My advice to you is NEVER bad talk any company...period. even if you are the best, you don't do that! Bad business.
"you need a whole new unit".... that's why they live in big homes and drive the latest work vehicles.... some trades people are just in it for the money and when they know the customer has no idea then they get on that gravy train and ride it.
I do electrical service work and sometimes I don't charge like the big companies do -- I guess that's why I drive a 16 year old van. Lol
Yes spray a server strong cleaner and not wash off will help destroy it to aid in the sell of a new unit! Take parts so have to call them back BS!
With the aluminum fan, you can use brazing for it to repair the piece that’s broken
Unbelieveable what people will do to make a sale
I run into this crap ALL THE TIME working behind the local Motorola dealer here.
All you had to do was drill two holes then put two screws from the blades to the bushing and fixed.
It would be possible to braze that aluminum pieces. Braze is stronger than weld but it could be TIG welded.
Steve came straight thru again. God bless.
I'm going to HVAC school in the fall I'm going to be a honest technician
Come on at least cable tie the capacitor in place!
Your a good man Steve I don’t try and sell someone something if it’s not needed.
Fan motor went bad from trying to run without a start capacitor?
Hey I know this is random... I have this exact same unit and I literally need a new fan blade. Do you remember what the part number was for the blade? My units model number is so sun faded I can't figure it out. I know this is a hail Mary but kenmore is no help to me
Lifesaver Steve to the rescue. Unreal... the companies out there.
Your honesty and forthrightness has just won you a customer for life (and probably a few friends and neighbors too!).
Amen, Barack
That condenser coil was a mess. What did the contactor terminals look like? That unit looks old. Good thing it was just the fan blade. You're gonna be back there soon for more parts. Hope you ready for the after hours calls on that one.
Just looked at a commercial unit,10 ton unit, company told the woman it was done, nothing they could do,so after I got it back up and running,I told her she needed to do some pm work, but it's gonna last a few more years! They wanted 15 grand to replace it
Whoever made it, call the distributor and give them the model/serial number and they can look up the Capacitor rating.
That condenser coil is in rough shape. Glad you fixed it but she could become “a leaka” by the time you get home.
Honest man Steve. Good work.
Looks like fluffy has been eating at Taco Bell 😂
I hope the customer contacted MJ Heating and Air Conditioning and asked what happened to his capacitor.
