@The RightStuff Dale was bleeding out profusely from his nose, mouth, and ears. A common feature of a basilar skull fracture is massive hemorrhaging in the brain and it has to go somewhere. Don't believe me look up pictures of the interior of the car, it's a bloody mess in there. The seat was soaked in it. The steering wheel was bent inwards and one of the spokes was broken too from his head and chest hitting it.

Funny how Darrel Waltrip seems to be the only one who realized that wreck was bad. Listen to his commentary, soon as he saw the replay he was deeply concerned for Dale. Those sudden head on stops in the wall like that may not look dramatic, but they are extremely dangerous hits. Even other experienced drivers didn't think it was a big deal at first. Apparently DW knew something about wrecks.

    • @captainnebulous2918
      @captainnebulous2918 3 года назад +11

I never understood how people could say the wreck didn't look bad enough to kill someone at the time. It was obviously a very serious wreck. You could see the roof warp as well as portions of the car opposite from any impact. The wheel came off which, while not unheard of, was fairly rare by 2001 for a "simple" wall impact unless it was a big hit. Plus we had just lost two drivers in 2000 from similar wrecks with similar angles-of-contact at much slower speeds, as well as Neil Bonnet's death in '94 which was very similar. Tony Roper is another example of a similar impact angle that resulted in death. I dunno, I was extremely worried from the second it happened. Had been watching NASCAR for 13 years by that point and I just never understood how any observant fan could find the wreck not immediately concerning.
Whenever you see g-force damage and roll cage shift on the complete opposite side of the car, and/or you see the roof warp even a tiny bit..... that's always a sign that the driver took the brunt of the impact.
And don't ever get complacent. We WILL have another fatality in NASCAR's big leagues, it's just a fact of motorsports. Only a matter of time. So I'd also like to see all the nosepickers stop wishing for drivers they don't like to crash.

i remember seeing this as a kid and now im an engineer and know physics...... that crash..... was as bad as it could be nearly.... why he turned sideways almost all the momentum and components of motion transitioned towards the wall..... and then came to a stop instantly... essentially the physics is (Impulse = Force average x change in time) when something happens in a very small period of time...... the force is extremely high..... think of catching an egg. if you catch it with a flat hand and not motion it will splat. but if you move your hand with the egg, you can catch it safely.

There's 1 major factor that you left out in the equation...Dale's seat belt had ripped on left side.
How do I know this?...I was one of the safety crew that extricated him! I even was asked to sit down with the lawyer's to explain why the EMT thought that the 4 point harness was in tact. When I told them that he had pulled the belts from Dale's right to left, he didn't pull the left side of the harness system.
Once I gave them my theory, I saw a light bulb 💡 above their heads.

As a NASCAR fan, I just watched the full episode and... hoo boy there's a lot of problems:
Out of all the racing footage used in this video, ZERO PERCENT came from the 2001 Daytona 500.
What's worse is that some of the footage is actually from Talladega Nights. It's sometimes used as filler leading up to the events of Earnhardt's crash.
Not even the actual commentary is used; they just recreate it with voiceovers.
The actors don't even come close to looking like the real drivers they're portraying. They should've been used for just the on board-styled footage.
Michael Waltrip's firesuit is really a Chase Elliott jacket. Just about every one of them the actors are wearing is laughable.
Ken Schrader's car replica is just a Pinty's Series car with part of his front wrap on.
Dale Earnhardt's car has Nextel Cup contingency decals.
The CGI. DEAR GOD, THE CGI. This is quite possibly the worst part of the whole video. It looks like it was done on iRacing, Gen 6 cars are being used, the animation is rough throughout, Tony Stewart's wreck is not realistic in the slightest, most of the paint schemes and number fonts are totally wrong (Dale Earnhardt's 3 is just a Dale Jr. 8 decal sliced in half), and the wheels from Earnhardt's car come to a complete stop as he wrecks. Again, why not use footage from the actual race and not this and just pictures of the crash?
They make all these accusations before getting to the point of the real cause of his death.
The people being interviewed aren't even at a track that hosts Cup Series races.
I don't have any more words to describe how awful this documentary is. Reelz barely looked like they did any serious research about NASCAR in general and airing this is a complete slap in the face to all of its fans. The number of inaccuracies that were made throughout would make Dale Earnhardt roll over in his grave. Very dissatisfied. Would not recommend.

Nothing is absorbed. Maybe a little now with the safer barriers. But when the cars is barrel rolling a lot of the energy and g forces are absorbed so its not as bad not that its not dangerous but its not as bad as a head on collision at 180 mph like Dale's was.

He had a clear view of Schrader when Schrader went to check on Dale and from the look on Schrader's face he knew that Dale was gone. He said 2 years later he went to one of Schrader's businesses and Schrader was there and he asked Schrader what exactly did he see. Said Kenny said Dale was sitting up, his eyes were open and blood was coming from his eyes, mouth, nose and ears. And he could see bones coming from the back of Dale's head. He knew immediately. Today, Dale probably would have walked away from that crash with barely a scratch, although when one loosens their belts while still racing, no amount of safety devices will save them.
At least part of his legacy is that safety became paramount in NASCAR after his death, and that many of his fellow drivers and future stars are much safer today due to his loss. RIP#3!

Not a bad hit ? Man that is crazy he went
from 160mph to 0 in too short of a distance to survive!! 1000 pounds of GeForce is to much stress on the body!!
I know what Ken Schrader saw because
I talked to a women who brother was a Emt that day!!

160mph sideways. when the wheels caught traction, the car went from 0 to maybe 70mph to 0 (wall). The bottom line is the man wasn't wearing his seatbelt 🙁 so his chin hit the steering wheel cracking his skull and for some reason the ambulance took a dead body to the hospital😒. His friend probably saw a black face with bugged eyes wide open.
