  • From the Radiolab podcast: How much in life is random, and how much of what we do and what we are is simply chance?
    Stochasticity - a wonderfully slippery and smarty-pants word for randomness - may be at the very foundation of our lives. To understand how big a role it plays, we look at chance and patterns in sports, lottery tickets, and even the cells in our own body.
    Along the way, we talk to a woman suddenly consumed by a frenzied gambling addiction, meet two friends whose meeting seems to defy pure chance, and take a close look at some very noisy bacteria.

    I am with you JAD. The data geeks are changing the aspects of how they are looking at these events. They are “pulling back” to the whole world if’s…they are saying “practically in a streak”, etc. You are right JAD. These are not random…as all things…it’s in the eye of the beholder..the data geeks say..IF you look at from this aspect” which the same as when you cay…it’s random because of the emotional aspect that makes the playe hot…I am a firm believer that nothing is random…but it can be thought as not random…IF you look at it from a different aspect. You are changing the rules to fit your arguement. Thanks as always for the thought provoking projects. BTW…Robert is the Data Bully” LOL

    26:00 "Marilyn Set Me Free" is the song playing. It just so happens to be one of my favorites of all time, and is somewhat of an obscure piece of music.... Is it coincidence?

    I don't really care for the basketball to coin flip comparison. I completely understand using statistics to guess the likely outcome of a series of a portion of coin flips and how coin flip can be considered random but that's not the same as a professional basketball player shooting the ball.
    If you were to make simple machine with an arm that you place a coin onto and then the machine flips the coin the outcome will still be completely random but if you were to make a machine that can be fine tuned to shoot a basketball into the hoop it's no longer random.

    Almost every beginning online poker player thinks the RNG is rigged against them. They don't understand what randomness really is when they've a losing or winning streak.

    Soooo it’s totally random if the player will make the shot. So practice is canceled

    • @mentalmelt
      @mentalmelt 2 года назад +1

      Guess you missed the point. Each player has a certain chance of making the shot. Their chances are based on their skill levels. Each shot may be a miss or a hit, but when you add them up they will reflect the player's level of skill.

    Ah, lads, I'm about 47minutes in and It's the first time I have to leave it at that... For the past 10min, ALL I'm hearing are these annoying sound effects. Is it really necessary to interrupt every sentence with some weird clicking and screeching? It's a podcast, not an experimental music art piece. So distracting that I completely lost the plot at this point. :(

    • @TitanicDundee
      @TitanicDundee 2 года назад

      If you stick with it, the "weird clicking and screeching" actually help you to remember the content. Think about it and try it.
