First video with a reasonable take on the value of CPU and Memory upgrades - most others warn about spending a few hundred bucks as if it’s tens of thousands of dollars. Buying time for an extra $600 or $1000 is an incredible deal. Plus these things won’t even lose 50% of their value in two years so net cost is almost nothing. Upgrade!
I know right I must've watched 30 videos and nobody seems to have addressed us like he did I'm for sure gonna do a video soon when mine comes in! It's like most RUclipsrs just talk about the exact same crap. 😤
For under $2k you get a little box, let anyone complain about its design and flaws, it’s mind boggling the power that is here now and what the next 3 years will brings us coming, just look at the numbers.
If you care about sound quality though, you won’t use it, and use a external DAC instead. Even the relatively cheap THX Onyx Dongle DAC plugged into the USB port would be a huge improvement with your wired IEMs.
I wanted to buy a base mac mini but after testing it and comparing it to my pc it's not faster than my built pc. However, for my wife's photo editing it's pretty good. For the size and power of the mac mini m4 it's a crazy good deal. I can't built a more powerful pc for $599
Don't do it! I've been a professional editor for over 2 decades. ALWAYS use external storage for your media files. Don't put the internal drive through that wear and tear. I just got a mini Pro myself: base SoC, 48 RAM, 2 TB storage.
I just got same specs he did but opted for 24GB of memory should I have gone for 48GB at least? Everyone I spoke with at Apple and more seem to say 24 is more than enough for a video editing more concerned with GPU but I don't know hence asking.
Comforting to hear another editor went for the mini instead of waiting for a studio. I’m about switch back to Apple from my PC after 6 years. Windows is wearing me out.
well of course its going to be mindblowing with the model you got I would expect that since the base model mini does pretty good with my video editing on the M1 with the 8gb and 256HD
While using my original iPhone 16 Pro Max charger, I experienced an electric shock and tingling sensation around camera ring and capture button. Is this potentially harmful to my iPhone?
Apple’s internal SSDs are VERY expensive and difficult to replace. Fortunately the one in the mini is no longer soldered to the motherboard but… if you are on deadline and something bad happens to your Mac you can take your externals to another computer and be going again quickly. If everything is IN the Mac…
@TomRich how have you found editing 4K footage even HD while using colour grade plugins, LUTS, animated titles or elements and say maybe 3 motion tracking callouts on one clip? Does it cook the mini and stutter on FCPX? Also what Display setup would you recommend? Nice vid, thank you mate 👍
Ok so it seems that I do similar to what you do with editing client videos, RUclips etc. and bought the exact same Mini but left the memory at 24GB should I have gone to 48GB at least? Everyone seems to say 24GB is more than enough but what do you think? I knew I didn't need 64GB but 24 or 48 were my two I wasn't sure about. Like that rendering speed you showed is that memory or cpu? It's cpu right?! Thanks!
Rendering is CPU reliant not as much memory, though I believe if your memory is too low it could have an impact on rendering speeds. I will do further tests in a future upload compared to the baseline Mac mini
@@ItsTomRichsee with that though I was told memory doesn't really help with that it's all cpu where does the memory come into play just if you have tons of other apps open at the same time which I would never do?
how long would it have taken to render out a full video like this 11 min video, Im trying to find a video with real world application and no one seems to be doing it. I have an 2017 i mac with 5k display i5 intel with 24 gbram and 1 tb storage and it took me 25 min to render out a 16 min 4 k video, in premiere pro.
got mine yesterday, put it to sleep last night, woke up this morning front usb ports dead, no keyboard to log in, switched to rear lightning port worked fine, had to reboot to get front usb working, this was with phone support Apple
@ Hi tom.. could you also test other topaz video ai feature ie upscaling 1080p to 4k, slow motion.. it takes me almost an hour to slow down a few seconds of a 1080p clip on my mac air M1
From the title of the video i thought you had gone for the base model for video editing. I am wanting to edit a lot of 4K video workloads and seeing if the m4 mini base model was enough for it
New sub here. Great channel. Would you be so kind as to answer a few questions. I mostly use Final Cut Pro & Photoshop to create videos on my Billy Luna Crime Stories YT channel. I am working in 1080p, but plan to start working in 4k. Currently I am Using a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD (2TB & 4TB) to edit off whilst using FCP. I like to use Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and 40 web browser tabs open simultaneously. 1) For my needs, which exact configuration of the new M4 Mac Mini should I get? (Pro or no, RAM, SSD) These are the two configurations that I have been mulling: $1,079.00 Apple M4 chip with 10‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 32GB unified memory Or $1,799.00 512GB SSD storage Apple M4 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine 48GB unified memory 512GB SSD storage 2) Is there any speed or performance advantage in going with a 1 TB SSD vs 512? 3) Do I need to worry about fan noise when I’m recording on camera video or voice over?
Mac mini PRO is actually pretty bad when it comes to performance in relation to value. Your spec already costs more than Mac Studio, which offers better performance and value. Your mac mini pro costs almost just as much as five base models, which insanely terrible value in general. Of course, if you're looking for portability and performance this thing will deliver, but I doubt you'll be able to make a use out of 64GB by doing video editing. You need to run about 40 chrome tabs, blender and run virtual windows 11 at the same time to hit the limit with the base 16GB model. Imho, the best value is in the most basic and Studio Max models. Since you use a lot of AI and effects in your video editing, you're be better off with more GPU cores than RAM. M4 Max with it's 32-40 cores would be killing it in your case.
@@ItsTomRich could you also elaborate or make a video on the other advantages of the Mac Mini M4 Pro compared to your Mac Studio like the new Thunderbolt 5 ports for fast external storage? And what about the fan noise compared to your Mac Studio?
I don’t do video. I do intense editing on 90 mp close-up/macro individual images at a time. Currently I use Affinity Photo for general editing and my M1pro 16 gb is not remotely impacted by that, unless I do a 45 mb each 100 image focus merge(which can take 4-12 minutes each). However Topaz Photo AI De-Noise, Upscale, and Sharpening can take a bit of time. Unfortunately no one is testing topaz or testing Focus merging with the new machines. I’m not willing to part with $3000 just for a 30 seconds increase in speed. That’s nothing.
I wish it had an SD card slot in the front like the studio. But that may be what apple wants to set these apart aside the size. But do I want to pay studio prices for an SD car slot? Huuuum.
Hey Tom, you could just take the 512gb version and internally change the SSD. This year the storage is easily upgradeable and so you can safe a lot of money.
When I ordered it this sadly wasn’t known, and I’ll probably end up sticking with this since I tend to sell my macs later down the road - but this is a great suggestion and cool it’s the first Mac for a while to be able to do this!
It’s extremely hard to upgrade as the videos show. Virtually nobody can do that themselves. Until someone figures out how to sell clip in upgrades that ‘news flash’ is a mirage.
