    The Kapaleeswarar Temple initially was constructed in the 7th century CE by the Pallavas and the older temple once stood where the current Sathome Church in Chennai is located. The original Kapaleeswarar Temple was demolished during the Portuguese invasion of Madras. Later in 1566 CE the Vijayanagara Kings reconstructed the present day temple.
    Kapaleeswarar temple is one of the 276 paadal Petra sthalams.
