  • Struggling to balance when cross-stepping?
A common mistake we see people make when learning to cross-step is hinging or bending the body at the hips and running forwards toward the nose.
To keep balanced and smoothly cross-step we must keep our body upright. We want to lead with our feet, then our hips, then our upper body.
Rolling our weight forward on the hip also helps to unload weight from the back foot which in turn allows us to step forward more easily and with better balance. The same concept applies when stepping back towards the tail we just want to roll our weight to the back trailing hip instead.
Keep your eyes up! We should be looking forward to how the wave is developing. The wave steepness will dictate whether we can continue stepping forward or if we need to step back. If the section is too soft we will nosedive.
Many factors come into successfully cross-stepping and noseriding such as timing, positioning on the wave, and trim but learning the correct stance is a good place to start.
