Honestly a very fun way to play the game, especially when you dock onto a ship with your rowboat and they get a little notification that says "treasure aboard ship" while they're doing something.
I do the same thing and if you want to have fun use the skeleton krampus skin then row up to them offer "gifts" of food bow and go back on to the dinky rowboat rowing away being the sea's creepy santa

I played music for them while they unloaded some treasure and then snatched me to come along. I designated myself as the ship’s cook and repairman, as well as the lookout while they were away on islands. After each voyage I would help load all the treasure and prepare the ship for departure. After a couple hours we ended going to sell all the loot and while they were unloading they told me to start selling. I told them I didn’t want to take away their loot since we weren’t in an alliance, but they scoffed at that and told to just sell whatever I wanted. I played them a tune and then swam off into the waters. Easily one of my favorite adventures on the Sea!

5:22 That spot. I've fallen into that exact cluster of rocks and got banished several islands away during a Voyage, only to get sunk two minutes later. It is so validating to know I'm not the only one who suffered at the hand of portal rock.
In the Athena crew's defense, one of the biggest trends in this game is stealing a Chest of Legends from a crew that has probably been grinding for it for quite a while. Paranoia is the best defense. Shoot first, ask questions as their soul floats away.
To quote my first mate after encountering one too many Tryhard crews only to have them leave with our loot: “There is no such thing as Karma in this game” right as the tryhards got Kraken'd... then they fled the kraken.
Here's my 'Rare said no fun' story: It was the 2nd to last day for the emissary rewards and I was minding my own business, doing a gold hoarders voyage with a grade 5 emissary up, and I was happily sailing to the last island, which was snake island. *This is where the Rare'd begins.* As I was sailing, a meg spawns. No big deal, just a normal meg, and while I didn't go out of my way for supplies (since I was just doing normal hoarder maps), I didn't think I had enough for the fight (keep this in mind), and I wasn't really going for megs anyway. Still, I carried on, got to Snake island, and the meg despawns. I hoped this was the last of Rare saying no fun, *but the 'no fun' had just begun.* Suddenly, as I was getting the 2nd clue, Rare decides that the most fun I could've had was to fight 20 phantoms, 5 of each Ocean crawler, and enough gun skeletons, powder keg skeletons, and skeleton captains to make the FOTD blush, and that's *lowballing* it. As I deal with ALL of that, I manage to finish the riddle, and even got 2 Sorrow chests out of it! (although 1 was on the sands). As I start on the 2nd map, a skeleton sloop decides to spawn on me. I don't mind fighting skele sloops, mind you, but considering how low I was on supplies, I knew I'd lose the fight. So, I don't fight it and focus on my map and bucketing, hoping it would tire itself out and leave. To put what I'm about to say in perspective, I'm level 64 during this, and the map had about 5-8 marks spanning all 3 sections of snake island. I'd also admit I'm pretty sub par when it comes to marker maps, I have to wait for the ferry since Rare said *"MORE FLINTLOCK SKELETONS"* and all the while, I have to make pitstops to bucket and repair my ship. The Skele sloop was there THE WHOLE TIME, circling the whole island, taking pot shots at my ship as I do ALL OF THAT, PUT ALL MY LOOT (~70k gold total) ON MY SHIP, REPAIR, BUCKET, AND LEAVE. As I finally decided to fight back and get to open water, I get 1 balled by them. My ship was completely dry, and fully repaired I lost 1 Sorrow chest trying to cheese them, and I left the other on land, just in case. There were no rocks, no water kegs, *N O T H I N G* in front of my ship. I lost it all. I quit for the day, and never got that emissary reward TL:DR Rare decides to Rare me so hard I lost an emissary reward

A crew that anchors with the sails down while clearing a fort most us know is not worth the effort screams one thing. Easy Prey. This line scared me and I love it.
a tip for being an absolute rowboat chad, going into the ‘Use Oars’ animation hides anything you were holding before you started rowing, meaning you can hide extremely valuable loot (such as athenas, although I’m not sure why you’d have those) or - as you would expect this to be used for - KEGS. :)

Probably the smallest and most fulfilling W I’ve had was when I was being sunk as a solo sloop. I sunk, but had a rowboat and all my loot floating so I take my fallen emissary flag far enough away so the other sloop couldn’t see it to get it, swim back to the rowboat, wait for them to get some treasure aboard the rowboat and kill the one loading it. Afterwards I safely navigated my way to a neighboring outpost and left the opposition behind selling just a few chests before logging off.
Well, a story of Bad Luck (yes, with capitals), if I may: I usually play with a friend of mine with a sloop, so did we this time as well. We set sail with some kind of emissary (I don't remember which one though) and had a couple of hours plundering around, we had quite some loot and a level 5 emissary flag. We got into some fight, which we managed to win and then we decided that as the cherry on the top we're going to loot a sea fortress. Phantoms eliminated, vault door opened, I started to stack the loot right next to our ship when I realized, with a chest in my hand that the only thing I see of my ship is its "nose" standing out of the water as it was sinking. We had a sneaky hole (we call the holes in the back of the sloop, which are easy to miss and fill up the ship with water very slowly sneaky holes). So, we tried to save as much of our loot as we could to the sea fortress before they get sank as well, which was successful. We agreed, that this loot is soo good that we don't want to lose it, so I remained on the fortress, my friend got our ship, sailed back (of course from the other end of the map, where else from...), we stacked our loot to the ship and we decided to get back our lvl 5 emissary flag once more. So we did. And at this point -we were about 5-6 hours in the game, it was evening in real life, so we were tired- a galleon appeared on the horizon. We were paying attention to it, but very soon it became very clear that they want our heads. So the chasing begins. We're pretty bad at PvP, and according to the Ancient Greek Philosophers, fighting with a sloop against a full crew galleon isn't a life insurance. I tried to flee away the chicken I am, using the game mechanics that the sloop is the fastest in frontal wind. But after a long chase I had to realize that the frontal wind leads us to the red waters. At that point, I was super tired, frustrated so I did what I never do: I headed right into the red waters saying "If it ain't mine, it ain't yours.". I saw that the galleon is stopping, it does not dare to come to the red waters. I found the line, where the water is red-ish, but the ship doesn't start to break yet. We waited for some time and tried to maneuver along that line as our last hope, but the galleon started to follow us in a parallel line. And then, another galleon appeared and attacked the galleon which was chasing us, this is our chance! While the 2 giants were fighting each other, we sneaked out of the situation and with full speed were heading as far as we could towards where we could sell. We had an enormous amount of loot. From the distance we saw that one of the galleons was sank. We did not see which one, because we were far away and we hoped that the surviving galleon wasn't going to chase us. But the sunken galleon was spawned to an island very close to us, started to chase us, harpooned us and in that time when we were trying to fight for our puny lives, the other galleon appeared as well so between the 2 galleons we lasted as long as a mosquito between 2 palms... 6-7 hours of game, maybe even more, enormous loot, all gone in a blink of an eye.
Hi, It's really fun to watch your storytells. I think playing SoT it is about storytelling. When you live those pirate life in couple of hours during the session is like you are the pirate in that time. You feel it, you live it, you feel the emotions. And looking into your vids is like reading someone diaries or a good book. I would like to see your story about Shores of Gold as long as you haven't played it yet or maybe completing some challanges - skeleton trones or unblocking some curse. Now I'm tempted to combine a thing I saw in a Phuzzybond video with this idea of sailing in just a rowboat. Just collect tons of Skeleton Orders and row from island to island collecting a hoard on my rowboat. A shame this happened to you Cliff but hey, not all voyages are successful ones. Hell, I tend to rage quit this game when my ship gets attacked by another player ship for reasons everyone can probably relate to. So this whole rowboat thing sounds incredibly awesome for someone like me who wants to avoid all possible interactions if possible.
LOL I row boat adventure semi often! It really tests your island recognition and working out your position with just the compass and what you can remember of the map is a hell of a challenge. Combat...apart from the finding and getting to someone....is surpisingly in effecient. Very glass cannon, you're very exposed to sniper shots but man you can pump those cannon balls out!! I've sunk several sloops and a brig purely in the row boat...it's amazing. Galleons......too many people paying attention :) Honestly...great fun, try it!
This afternoon I joined an open crew and for the first time in forever my crewmate was above Pirate Legen. He had raised an Athena emissary and just made an alliance with a brigantine crew starting a Fort of Fortune. It took a while but we finally completed it. After we finished splitting up the loot on our ships a duo sloop reaper shows up and we just decide to make way to an outpost. The problem was they cut us off and the only way we could get to the outpost was try to board and anchor them. They were camping the ladders and just killed us with blunderbusses. Eventually we just turned to fight them since the friendly brigantine was nearby also. My teammate left to board them at a crucial moment and I got hit in the face with a cannonball. He died, I died, we sunk. Lovely stuff. Yeah I immediately clicked ‘Exit to Desktop’
I basically just had this exact experience with trying to do things from just a rowboat. minus the pvp. Seems rare hates it when you dont use their ships. Started off lucky, found everything i needed for my voyage, including a few boxes of food. Then I find an ashen key skele on the first island I row to. Get chased by 2 storms, the first double lightning strike insta kills me without me being able to heal. The second much later, sinks my rowboat after striking me with lightning. The typical getting sucked into the void due to careless jumping and a random crash that forced me to respawn. Yeah, i cashed in the captain chest, the ashen key, a villainous bounty skull, two boxes of fruit and one box of ammo and called it a night.
I know the feeling of having a great idea for conten- I mean… stories… but then things don’t go your way because the seas simply had other plans for you 😅 oh well, this was still fun to watch! Thanks for making videos every week ☺️
One time my crew were in the middle of a Fort of Fortune event and we had just wrapped up and were reveling in our spoils. As we were taking the time to haul our loot into a harpoon position, a small sloop pulled up on us. We were a galleon so we had relatively nothing to fear, and the sloop looked friendly enough as their crew was talking to us. However as they were trying to distract us with their words, we noticed they were trying to put their ship into a position to fire upon us without us fighting back. We all jumped onto the anchor and began turning out wheel to sail into a combat position. As it turns out, one of us had left the chest of rage in the water, which happened to be located right in front of our ship. We crashed into it, and it detonated the chest of rage (at least we're assuming that's what happened, and not a gunpowder barrel.). To make matters worse, as we re spawned and sailed back to maybe catch the sloop in the act. They had vanished with the chest of fortunes and the other high tier loot. We decided to settle for what scraps remained, but because of the way we parked our ship on the island, the ship auto scuttled after awhile, leaving us stranded on the fort with no more ship, and a completely ruined evening out on the seas.
Chests of rage don't actually explode, they just spew fire. But, lesson learned! Never underestimate Sloops. They were the most popular historical pirate ship for a reason.

This is a good solid video to all the people who cry about PVP in this game thinking it's sea a friend's. Just get back up dust yourself off and keep getting better and learn from the experiences that happen. It's not everyone's day on the sea of Thieves but it could be if you keep trying and you keep getting better.
Yesterday I got 5 FoFs in one night because while server hopping and got 0 steals because it takes so long for people to complete which adds more time for everything to go wrong
Hmm. I have had great success running without a ship. Getting a storage crate and an ammo crate and preferably a harpoon boat, not a cannon boat (as shore batteries and skellie ships now agro on cannon rowboats.) I have come out with a couple hundred thousand gold worth of loot in a few hours using only a row boat and what I find on islands. The biggest issue is you need to juggle everything every hour or so as things start to despawn since they aren't on your ship and will disappear eventually like a chest left on a dock or beach.
It seems you're luck was given to mine. Just yesterday me and an open crew stolen a fof from another reaper... That hardly even resisted. Not one cannon shot because I'd already boarded and killed them. Grade 5 and an easy 300.000 or so.
I must be a Rare(ltd) case then, because even solo slooping as an Athena Emissary I usually wont run, except if I have valuable cargo or little time left.

Me and a friend did a FOF once, and we saw far in distance two skelly gally who literally run over each other then start to agro us, and ofc u can't f with 2 skelly gallies, f. SOT.
Just yesterday I had basically that same luck what happened to me started when me and my crew were chasing a sloop but then they attacked and sunk us but then from our new ship we decided to try and go to a siren shrine and my crew had to go afk and right after they did a kraken spawned, we got sunk again THEN we managed to make it to one but it didn’t have much loot and we spent wayyyy too long
I made the worst mistake the other day! We 2 man slooped a FoF, took us around 45 minutes to kill all the waves, the Skelly Lords & the Ashen Lord at the end, sooo much loot for us both to carry, which then took a further 30 minutes to bring to the ship.....Our mistake was we took so long and a rank 5 reaper Brig turned up and destroyed us and stole all our loot....so sad lol
i completely agree with your enjoyment of cooking food at islands, and using what little supplies and quests you had. there’s a certain feeling to it that makes it that much more enjoyable
Omg this is crazy I just did a vault then a skele came and destroyed our boat but we had a rowboat so then we rowed to reapers and on the way grabbed a reapers bounty and managed to sell everything
to be fair you can fix it, im new to the game, literally bought it yesterday and you know what happened? i picked a quest to slain some skelly Captain i set Sail, two inches and i get attacked by the freaking Kraken, a crewmate spawn thank god and we manage to wound the dam thing and send it away, soon after we get attacked by a skelly ship, no problem we destroy that too, THEN we manage to kill 1 of 3 of the Skelly captain for the quest, we move on get the 2 at the third one we get attacked by another sloop of two players, no problem we sinked them aswell, they had no loot so we just took the stacks of food and ammo. then we finished the dam quest. And i was like "wow if this is my second seession of sea of thives i wonder my third"
My unluckys thing was when me and my friend were on a sloop while a skeleton galleon atacked us while this there were a megalodon atacking us and the skelettons

When you live those pirate life in couple of hours during the session is like you are the pirate in that time. You feel it, you live it, you feel the emotions. And looking into your vids is like reading someone diaries or a good book. I would like to see your story about Shores of Gold as long as you haven't played it yet or maybe completing some challanges - skeleton trones or unblocking some curse. Now I'm tempted to combine a thing I saw in a Phuzzybond video with this idea of sailing in just a rowboat. Just collect tons of Skeleton Orders and row from island to island collecting a hoard on my rowboat. A shame this happened to you Cliff but hey, not all voyages are successful ones. Hell, I tend to rage quit this game when my ship gets attacked by another player ship for reasons everyone can probably relate to. So this whole rowboat thing sounds incredibly awesome for someone like me who wants to avoid all possible interactions if possible.

It really tests your island recognition and working out your position with just the compass and what you can remember of the map is a hell of a challenge.
Combat...apart from the finding and getting to someone....is surpisingly in effecient. Very glass cannon, you're very exposed to sniper shots but man you can pump those cannon balls out!!
I've sunk several sloops and a brig purely in the row boat...it's amazing. Galleons......too many people paying attention :)

This afternoon I joined an open crew and for the first time in forever my crewmate was above Pirate Legen. He had raised an Athena emissary and just made an alliance with a brigantine crew starting a Fort of Fortune. It took a while but we finally completed it. After we finished splitting up the loot on our ships a duo sloop reaper shows up and we just decide to make way to an outpost. The problem was they cut us off and the only way we could get to the outpost was try to board and anchor them. They were camping the ladders and just killed us with blunderbusses. Eventually we just turned to fight them since the friendly brigantine was nearby also. My teammate left to board them at a crucial moment and I got hit in the face with a cannonball. He died, I died, we sunk. Lovely stuff.

One thing I like about the Sea of Thieves is a universal hatred for Skeleton Galleons.

I feel like if I encounter Cliff the Story Guy on Sea of Theives I will be on the verge of being scared for my loot or really excited 😂
I basically just had this exact experience with trying to do things from just a rowboat. minus the pvp. Seems rare hates it when you dont use their ships. Started off lucky, found everything i needed for my voyage, including a few boxes of food. Then I find an ashen key skele on the first island I row to. Get chased by 2 storms, the first double lightning strike insta kills me without me being able to heal. The second much later, sinks my rowboat after striking me with lightning. The typical getting sucked into the void due to careless jumping and a random crash that forced me to respawn. Yeah, i cashed in the captain chest, the ashen key, a villainous bounty skull, two boxes of fruit and one box of ammo and called it a night.
2:27 at least he got his comeuppance in a small way
I know the feeling of having a great idea for conten- I mean… stories… but then things don’t go your way because the seas simply had other plans for you 😅 oh well, this was still fun to watch! Thanks for making videos every week ☺️

One time my crew were in the middle of a Fort of Fortune event and we had just wrapped up and were reveling in our spoils. As we were taking the time to haul our loot into a harpoon position, a small sloop pulled up on us. We were a galleon so we had relatively nothing to fear, and the sloop looked friendly enough as their crew was talking to us.
However as they were trying to distract us with their words, we noticed they were trying to put their ship into a position to fire upon us without us fighting back. We all jumped onto the anchor and began turning out wheel to sail into a combat position.
As it turns out, one of us had left the chest of rage in the water, which happened to be located right in front of our ship. We crashed into it, and it detonated the chest of rage (at least we're assuming that's what happened, and not a gunpowder barrel.).
To make matters worse, as we re spawned and sailed back to maybe catch the sloop in the act. They had vanished with the chest of fortunes and the other high tier loot. We decided to settle for what scraps remained, but because of the way we parked our ship on the island, the ship auto scuttled after awhile, leaving us stranded on the fort with no more ship, and a completely ruined evening out on the seas.

Chests of rage don't actually explode, they just spew fire.
But, lesson learned! Never underestimate Sloops. They were the most popular historical pirate ship for a reason.

This is a good solid video to all the people who cry about PVP in this game thinking it's sea a friend's. Just get back up dust yourself off and keep getting better and learn from the experiences that happen. Yesterday I got 5 FoFs in one night because while server hopping and got 0 steals because it takes so long for people to complete which adds more time for everything to go wrong

What do you use to record/edit your videos
Hmm. I have had great success running without a ship. Getting a storage crate and an ammo crate and preferably a harpoon boat, not a cannon boat (as shore batteries and skellie ships now agro on cannon rowboats.)
I have come out with a couple hundred thousand gold worth of loot in a few hours using only a row boat and what I find on islands. The biggest issue is you need to juggle everything every hour or so as things start to despawn since they aren't on your ship and will disappear eventually like a chest left on a dock or beach.

It seems you're luck was given to mine. Just yesterday me and an open crew stolen a fof from another reaper... That hardly even resisted. Not one cannon shot because I'd already boarded and killed them. Grade 5 and an easy 300.000 or so.

I must be a Rare(ltd) case then, because even solo slooping as an Athena Emissary I usually wont run, except if I have valuable cargo or little time left.

Me and a friend did a FOF once, and we saw far in distance two skelly gally who literally run over each other then start to agro us, and ofc u can't f with 2 skelly gallies, f. SOT.

Just yesterday I had basically that same luck what happened to me started when me and my crew were chasing a sloop but then they attacked and sunk us but then from our new ship we decided to try and go to a siren shrine and my crew had to go afk and right after they did a kraken spawned, we got sunk again THEN we managed to make it to one but it didn’t have much loot and we spent wayyyy too long
I ought to try the rowboat challenge for fishing those hunter's call commendations........
As a pirate legend I can say we're not cowards what is paranoid to the point of schizophrenia because one out of 10 people isn't out to get us

I made the worst mistake the other day! We 2 man slooped a FoF, took us around 45 minutes to kill all the waves, the Skelly Lords & the Ashen Lord at the end, sooo much loot for us both to carry, which then took a further 30 minutes to bring to the ship.....Our mistake was we took so long and a rank 5 reaper Brig turned up and destroyed us and stole all our loot....so sad lol
i completely agree with your enjoyment of cooking food at islands, and using what little supplies and quests you had. there’s a certain feeling to it that makes it that much more enjoyable
Everytime I do a vault my ship gets suck before I’m ever able to get to it
Omg this is crazy I just did a vault then a skele came and destroyed our boat but we had a rowboat so then we rowed to reapers and on the way grabbed a reapers bounty and managed to sell everything
to be fair you can fix it, im new to the game, literally bought it yesterday and you know what happened? i picked a quest to slain some skelly Captain i set Sail, two inches and i get attacked by the freaking Kraken, a crewmate spawn thank god and we manage to wound the dam thing and send it away, soon after we get attacked by a skelly ship, no problem we destroy that too, THEN we manage to kill 1 of 3 of the Skelly captain for the quest, we move on get the 2 at the third one we get attacked by another sloop of two players, no problem we sinked them aswell, they had no loot so we just took the stacks of food and ammo. then we finished the dam quest. And i was like "wow if this is my second seession of sea of thives i wonder my third"
My unluckys thing was when me and my friend were on a sloop while a skeleton galleon atacked us while this there were a megalodon atacking us and the skelettons
