おばあさんにははじめまして! i lost my mom over 35 years ago (just after graduating high school) and this video was both a sadness and glee. i could pretty much understand everything you both said - i am SO glad she let you continue speaking japanese, as mine didn't because she'd been told if i did i'd never learn english. It's a lovely glimpse into how my mom may have been - thank you for that! (and the おいしそうきゅうざん!) 銅像よろしく!

Domo arigatou Niki no okasama! Watashi, wa-kyuri no kyu chan, hontoni daisuki desu! Sister, watching your okasama cook, makes me miss my mama so much! So many of your mama’s mannerisms’ remind me of my mama-right down to how she tasted the kyuri no su. I know that I tell you that all the time, so thank you for sharing your okasama with us! I happen to have 3 kyuri from Japan, in my fridge, along with all of the ingredients, so guess what I’ll be making today? YES! Thank you!
My okasama used to make nasubi no nimono all the time. It’s so oishi with hot gohan. Niki no okasama, kore tsukute kudasai. Onegaishimasu. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Your mum is adorable, loving her head scarf& her recipes.Ive booked my first trip to Honolulu next June as cheap airfare, if I waited for a month for friends to decide flights would be expensive. If I can manage Japan solo then Hawaii should be ok I hope. Will seek out budget eats as our dollar is low. Aragato for mamma for recipe, looks yum, Cheers

Hello, Nickey! Hello to your wonderful mother, also! Thanks to both of you for sharing this delicious kyu-chan recipe! Have you ever shopped at Trader Joe's? It looks like there is one in Honolulu. At our local Trader Joe's, they sell packs of Persian cucumbers, and they are small and delicious, similar to Japanese cucumbers. The price is really good. I've used them to make kyu-chan before and it worked well. I hope you will have a good holiday weekend. Sending hugs and good wishes from Northern California. :-) PS Please tell your mother that her blouse is pretty!

Erin Uber Sadly there are no Trader Joe's in Hawaii. We would be celebrating if there were! We have those Persian cucumbers here at Don Quijote and Costco and you're right that they would work very well in this recipe. Whenever I see your name I think of anko...I love anko, too😄.

@4ever808 Thanks for your message! I'm sorry there are no Trader Joe's in Hawaii. I wish that they would come there soon. Meanwhile, I'm glad the Persian cucumbers are at Don Quijote and Costco. I think they are delicious! It's so great you love anko, too. It's really yummy, isn't it? Sending best wishes your way. :-)

yes Erin Uber, we don't have Trader Joe's here. We dream of that store... you have all the great shops.. My mom has made the cucumbers 3 times already....Have you are having a wonderful labor day.... lots of love from Hawaii!!

@Niki Niki It's so funny. I looked up Trader Joe's, and it said there was one in Honolulu! That is so crazy! Maybe they will bring Trader Joe's there one of these days. I hope so. I'm so glad your mother is enjoying the cucumbers. I just love cucumbers, even plain! They are so refreshing. I hope you two are doing well, and enjoying the holiday today. Sending love to you from California!

Ahh I cook like your mom too 😂 Constantly tasting and tweaking ingredients lol! I love these 'pickles' btw, I made a version without the mirin. I miss having mirin in my kitchen, it's hard to get where I live! Although if I can find an open grocery that sells any Asian cooking wine at this point, I would be pleased to try mom's recipe 💖

Yuuummm! I love tsukemono. Every time we visit Hawai'i, I gotta eat some. No can find any where I live. Can't wait to try this. Do you know if she has a recipe for the really crunchy purple eggplant one? I've been searching for a recipe for years now but haven't found one close to what I'm looking for.

Many are quite easy to make yourself at a fraction of the cost. That's what I do despite the availability of plenty of Japanese markets in my area. There are plenty of recipes on RUclips. You can substitute hothouse cucumbers or Persian cucumbers if Japanese cucumbers are not available in your area. They are a little different but work quite well.
