These doesn't sound weird to me in any way shape or form. From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. The difference between the two is that jack o lanterns have gills underneath in a yellowish color, while chicken of the woods have pores and, usually, a white underside. Chicken of the woods grows on fallen logs and stumps of trees. Try to only take from the stumps of deciduous trees, as coniferous trees can cause the mushrooms to be toxic. And yes, chicken of the woods has a texture and taste similar to actual chicken, or sometimes lobster or crab. Remember to forage safely and only take something if you know 100% what it is!

(yes, i typed all of this myself. my mushroom hyperfixation can come in handy sometimes :D)

how to identify this mushroom: 1, if it has lines or “gills” underneath then it is no good 2, is it orange and yellowish? then it’s probably it 3, is it hard or soft? if it is hard, throw it away! 4, is it growing at the stump of a moist tree? then it’s good 5, use google lens just to be sure 6, it’s scary to promote mushroom hunting so don’t do this without a proper guide (cook the mushroom don’t eat it raw or 20 minutes in the toilet, some people are allergic to this because not everyone eats funguses every day so you might still end up in the toilet even after cooking)

Chicken of the Woods is apart of the genus Laetiporus and contains many species of edible mushroom which interchangeable common names. It doesn't have many lookalikes and is considered a "beginner friendly" mushroom because it is pretty easy to indentify, but always BE CAREFUL!!
