Exploring the rural parts of the countries you visit is something you shold definitely do! I always recommend to visit rural areas as you really get to know a country and its people there. I love to explore rural Philippines, so on my road trip all around Cebu island I also had to drive trough the rural areas in northern Cebu.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia. It is my goal here on the channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see many tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.

Pan de sal :D (Sp. "bread of salt")
Great to see areas like where you are in the northern-most part of Cebu already have most-deserved concreted streets.
If/when you traveled in rice-producing areas (Southern Tagalog, Central Luzon for example), you would see rice being dried on the streets as well; you might encounter fisherfolk (seaside) communities in Cebu and the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao that also dry fish, but they'd be in more remote villages away from beaches for swimming ü True, those are fighting cocks, prized and well-cared for by their owner/s because they bring in the money.
You quite got that correct-cock fights ("derby") are attended not only by those from neighboring villages but farther, depending on how big it is and the prize money.
Omg, you found yourself in a really remote part of the island, a "sitio," smaller than a Barangay-you might as well have tracked and pinned it on Google Maps ü Check your fuel, though.
"Kamusta ka?"-the lady replied "Maayo" (I'm) well/good"
Rural areas: Ceby/Visayas is mostly safe to travel; some parts of Mindanao [may] need more caution. Just the same, you too, stay healthy, stay safe ü
they cant tell you anything about cockfight because you're stranger because they will think you are an spy agent of pulis because some cockfights is iligal
Hello Ken. The kid that grabbed your hand to touch his forehead while you were looking at the dried coconuts, we call that gesture "Mano". We do that while saying "Mano po". We do that especially children as a sign of respect to older people. It is part of the Filipino culture.
Awwww….so beautiful!! I feel overwhelmed with joy reading this. Wanna hug that sweet kid so bad. Love to Philippines From Thailand.
@@daa1635 the boy was just showing a welcoming respect. You're judging someone you don't know personally. Did you hear or see that boy asking money?
@@daa1635 No sport, he was asking for Ken's hand so that he could touch it to his forehead as a gesture of respect.
@@daa1635 😆
@@daa1635 it is a filipino culture the kid is trying to grab Ken's hand to touch his forehead as a sign of respect to Ken
I am Thai. I just read many Filipinos comment on the boy’s MANO PO. Awwww….I feel overwhelmed with joy reading this. My heart is melting for this beautiful culture. Wanna hug that sweet kid so bad.

You're right, rural areas can really get to know a country and the people there!
It was another very leisurely and joyful day, thank you for sharing!👍😃🙌
I'm proud of that young boy he showed a respect to you as an elder person . You can do that also if you met somebody who is older than you . " Mano Po " is sign of respect.
That kid is so respectful for doing "Mano or bless " for someone older he didn't know.. such a good boy , here in the Ph we teach our kids to do "Mano" or sometimes we call it bless to older people that is coming like to their parents ,grandparents or uncle and aunt or even someone that is not family related to them as long as they are elder people, that is a sign of respect.
I feel overwhelmed with joy reading this. My heart melts. ❤ Love to Philippines From Thailand.
@@jomontanee I was delighted too, to see that the generations today are still doing that gesture , children should always be taught on how to be respectful to the elder , in that way our nations will be a better place to live in. ♥️ Thailand as well
So proud of that boy doing mano po, it shows how Filipino kids are respectful to their elders
So sweet so cultural. ❤❤
@@jomontanee thank you
Ken that boy in the dried coconut did 'Mano po' to you, that's a sign of respect to elders
They burn the dry leaves in the late afternoon to reduce mosquitos and also good for fruit trees to get rid of other insect eating fruits..
I first saw you in Malaysia and I commented in your channel to visit Philippines and I'm glad you did it but I never expected how adventourous you are when you started exploring here.
When kid come up to you to bring your hand to his forehead is called blessing, kids must do this to any older person as of respect so next time you will know 😊
that boy did to you hand is to show respect to the elders ,we called it MANO or MANO PO.❤️😍
So proud of that boy who has shown one of our Philippine custom to show respect to our elders- ‘mano’
Ken- Germans don’t do that .. just saying
Dried coconuts kernels which are called copra, from which coconut oil is obtained. Excellent Ken, loved this style of video, exploring places where hardly any tourists would visit. My favourites. I always look forward to your videos. You bring joy into my life. Thanks for posting, Ken.
Very happy to hear that chaw 😊

Mano or amen in bisaya
Good Day Ken. You may visit Bantayan Island. It is very near to your present location. By the way, I saw a kid get your hand and place it on his head. We call that in Tagalog "Pagmamano" ,in Bisaya "Pangamen". It is our tradition to show respect to older people.
I like this kind of vlog of yours... It is good to see that you immerse yourself deeper into rural areas. Makes me smile all the way
THIS is travelling!
Thank you for making these videos in English!
7:24 very good boy ,showing respect to the elder..MANO is a filipino culture 👍
Salamat te di ko nakita ang pag mano 😅
You are so nice to everyone your a good man
You should go to BANTAYAN or MALAPASCUA island. The beaches and sunset there are amazing.
The boy is so sweet! he did a Mano Po gesture. 👍
That little boy who just held your hand is showing a respect to you. We say "Mano Po" to the elders and put hand on our forehead. And you answer back should be "Bless You" or in Tagalog "Kaawaan ka ng Diyos"..This is one of our Filipino culture.
Hello, Ken! I think the burning you saw is for mosquitos. Usually, in provinces, they burn grass and dried leaves to make the mosquitos away, they don't like smoke, as we are told. That is why they do it every afternoon because a lot of mosquitos come during the evening.
Btw, I enjoy watching your adventure here in the Philippines. Take care!
Ken, nice video of your trip to Northern Cebu.I prefer the provinces or villages to the cities. people are so friendly ! be safe and enjoy your ride back to Cebu City
those little shop that full different snacks and drinks called "sari-sari store" for our daily needs as don't really store some groceries that boy just grab your hands is so nice as he did this "mano" it means to show soem respect for elder like a wai in thai ... like your video for today w/ full of interesting people and as always the vibes & and the wonder of each villages ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
super cool 👍✨🇵🇭🇵🇭
Ken those chickens you saw in the backyard were fighting roosters. The triangle shape or the small hut beside it are their houses.
😊😊😊🤗🤗 That coconut been dried scene is a much valued Filipino culture & tradition : MANO PO - taking ones hand into your forehead with a liittle bend on your neck to bow . Its a sign of respect generally to elders / or even younger but you respect , likewise giving your hand to someone who took your hand to his forehead is a sign your giving him a blessing .
Oh the little boy was raised nicely , he's so respectful....
Another interesting video once again. Loved it too. Thanks Ken.👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Hey ken, you should take the ferry and go to BANTAYAN ISLAND,STA.FE. .. it's so beautiful there you won't regret it.. enjoy your travel at northern cebu❤️
I love the organic way of respect to elders. Thank you for sharing your walking tour in the Rural Areas.
My mother is from this area. It was nice to get an idea where she came from through your experiences. Wholesome video man
THE KID SHOWS RESPECT FOR FOREIGN 👍👍😘👏👏👏👏
Fascinating video. 😀 Great to see and learn about the rural areas. Everyone seems very welcoming.🥰
I normally view your trip log on TV. Got to use my laptop to subscribed. Kudos for being respectful and nice to everyone that you meet. Going to rural places is also an eyeopener for me. Using motorcycle gives you more freedom to your travel. Be careful if you have to do inland travels in Mindanao. Get in touch with local government offices to know which places are safe to go. I enjoyed viewing your visit to your German hometown. Good to know. Be well. Be safe.
The boy get your hand and put it on his forehead is a sign of respect for the older ...
Boy : nano po or bless
Malapascua Island known for Thresher Shark is a known tourist diving destination and Bantayan Island because of its white sand beach and prestine water. These 2 are the tourist destinations in the northern part of Cebu.
Proud Kandayanon here, from Calape, Daanbantayn..currently working here in Riyadh, KSA...see u Daanbantayn nxt year February.. ❤️❤️ thnx ken for a ride...
The best beaches in Cebu province are in Bantayan Island.. I hope you can visit that place. It's worth the trip.
What a lovely gesture that boy had showed you and the rests of the world. He did “Amin” or “Mano” to show respect.
We haven’t visited Bantayan and Malapascua but we have friends who live in Cebu and showed their holidays in Bantayan Island and Malapascua. They highly recommend those places. Please try to visit Davao too it’s nice there including the chocolate hills in Bohol. Enjoy your stay in Pinas and stay safe always.
Let me say, what i like most about your travel is that you are very careful in maintaining respect to Cebuano culture.
Anyhow since you are there, you might want to cross to bantayan island. It has nice beaches there if you want to go for a dip. Malapascua and kinatarcan are nice too.
You're so very kind sir Ken salute. You discover a lot of things here in the Philippines and i think you enjoyed so much like the people, hospitality, languages, cultures, foods, beaches, tourist places, rural areas and even leisures. Goodjob and goodluck to your next adventure drive safe!💙☝
@ Ken Abroad: the place, where they asked you for 10 Peso is Maya, from where you can take a boat to beautiful Malapascua Island, which you shouldn't miss. It is like Boracay many years ago, but now already also touristy.
Hi Ken, @7:21 is the straditional sign of respect to visitors and elders. It feels great to have that kind of respect. Usually eleders who receive that goodngesture touches the head of the child as a gesture of God bless you or blessed child.
The quality of your videos are truly amazing dear friend 😊
Really enjoyed watching every of your videos
Thanks for sharing this with us giving another a big Big like thumbs up 👍👍👍
See you again take care
God bless 🙏🙏
Keep intouch ❤️🤗
LuiZ here again 🤗🎸🎸
Despite late to catch your vlogs after a long days work, i'll never miss it... Great to continue up in the rural area when there are not many tourists.... You might be probably the first tourist in a long time to wander over there... Always nice of you to support the local businesses in every way.....Even getting lost in the middle of nowhere can be quite an adventure .....So far, really loving the whole experience exploring the island ..... As always stay safe, ride safely , mate...Cheers!!...
Ken, it is okay for you to see cockfights which happens every Sundays and special holidays here in the Philippines. You can also video the cockfight but there is going to be many spectators (bettors)inside the arena.
RUclips frowns on such videos
I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you!
7:24 the kid take your hand and 'mano' its a filipino sign of respect to the elderly, kala q kalabit penge.
Hi Ken! As far as I know, what happens in chicken fights is that they fight it 1 vs 1. But before that, they let their chicken wear something called "Tare"(like a very sharp sword) in they feet. And the last standing chicken in the battle wins. Good luck in your travels here in Philippines, stay safe and enjoy.
Good evening ken stay safe always and God bless you. Have a safe travel in cebu. 😍✌🙏👍
Nice video. It was fun to watch. I also Enjoyed the green view of nature.
Oh man that boy who tried to put your hand on his forehead is showing a big sign of humanity. I understand you did not know about it because it is a Filipino culture but man he is showing RESPECT to a visitor.
These coconuts being dried are called copra and they are being sold which in turn will be made into variety of products such as soap, cooking oil, etc.
Thanks Ken for your Cebu adventures. I might as well visit and tour around Cebu in the future. Greetings from Oman. Take care and may God bless you in your many more adventures. Cheers
20 years ago when I lived there the road to Maya was a torture track. No RORO wharf, you had to walk out to the pump boats or get a small boat to take you out to them. Lots of changes. They burn rubbish every day around dusk, usually. It is interesting to watch you discover stuff I took for granted. We'll be back Xmas 2024 to visit wife's family in Calape so watching your videos has been magic.
07:25 "mano po" this is how we respect someone older than us.
Thanks for showing my place. It's been 7 years i didn't go home. Proud to be mayanhon (Brgy. Maya, Northern Cebu.
Happy trip man. Mabuhay Philippines 🤩👍
Those dried coconut meats ( from which cooking oil is extracted) is called “copra”
Man I hope you'll be back in the Philippines and explore other regions. I really like your honest review and the uncommon places you visit.
Bantayan Island is the known tourist spot of Northern Cebu.
Finally d drone shots .... Nice view frm d shots indeed ....
Love your vlogs Ken! Looking forward to every next episode of your adventures!
It's a lot of fun watching you learn all the things about the Philippines that are so common to me and I'll tell you Google Maps ain't gonna show you everywhere they definitely haven't mapped every dirt road in the philippi.
Ya your right, that place where you stop and got the areal view of the land is perfectly beautiful and peaceful.
wow great video of north rural cebu
Refreshing vlogg Ken💖 enjoyed it!
Really nice adventure around cebu province. More video and Godbless
Trivia: The one you noticed they burning something during the end of the day or evening, it's part of some culture here in Asia. They believed by creating smoke before dark would chase away or would negate bad things or creatures from that day and also during the evening. Somehow to deflect unwanted negativities that day. Also to chase away insects that might bite or enter in bed or in the house, to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
It saddens me, the idea of burning or making smoke everyday because it really destroys environment not to mention the pollution it creates in the air and would be stuck during the night.
By the way, thanks for going around Cebu. You didn't just stick to some mostly touristy place but you also really explored those unexpectedly aesthetic place.
Hey Ken! Make sure you come visit Davao City, southern part of the Philippines before you leave the country, Your might regret it! Keep safe!
Hello Ken good evening i always support you God bless you ❤️😀😀🇵🇭
Hey Ken,North Cebu looks very like North Europe,Thailand has 711 and Philippines has Sari-Sari stores,in UK we call motorbike sidecar,we call the guys who collect the refuse "bin men".
There's also a lot of 711 in Philippines but situated in the cities not the village side
I love the country side so peaceful
You should also visit Siquijor island, it's so beautiful and full of friendly people.
smoke in the countryside, are for making charcoal, not for burning trash. fire woods are from tree branches, its been buried in the soil , lighted it, to have it smoke in order to dry the wood, into charcoal. Charcoal making is a normal livelihood in the villagers. Charcoals are used for roastings, esp. lechon .
lovely travel Ken, have fun and keep safe always. :-)
The purpose of the burning thing is to remove the insects and flies. Also we have this belief that the smokes help the tree to grow nice.
Ken your a really nice Guy 👦!... Be careful on what your doing as you travel on every city your doing?
They're not really burning their rubbish, they are piles of dried leaves. It helps controlling the mosquitoes.
try explore marawi city to Mindanao. the people there are friendly and welcome foreigners. you can find beautiful beaches and islands there.
You must try visit
Since you are in North of cebu try to go in camotes Island before you back in cebu city
And some part of mindanao
Camiguin Island
Siargao island
Dinagat island
And sohoton cove swimming in the jellyfish sanctuary.
Oh they dry rice on the streets in Philippines too.. usually wider roads. They also make charcoal from coconut shells too.
It's amazing that your cell service works in such rural areas to power your Google maps.
There was a kid who took your hand brought it to his forehead. I was sure that you thought that was odd. It was a greeting or gesture of respect. I thought it was delightful to see.
We don’t see much of that in Manila anymore.
Yeah I was curious to know why he did that
Yes, “Mano po” is a traditional gesture of Filipino culture, a respect for elder person than him, “ if a younger lad draw your hand out and put it on his forehead, then you say, “GOD bless you”. He wants you to bless him!
Hi bro nice beautiful video clip
Im loving these videos in cebu you are doing. I subscribed because of the cebu videos
They also burn leaves and branches to get rid of insects from the trees or to help mangoes trees bear more fruit.
7:23 The kid was trying to put your hand on his forehead as sign of respect called "Amin or Bless" in Visayan or "Mano Po" in Tagalog which literally translates "Hand, please" (Mano - Hand in Spanish, Po - Sir, Maam). Filipino's traditionally do this gesture to people much more older than them. In a way, it's like asking, "Please bless me for protection." Similar to how Christian priests put their hand on somone's head and pray for them or to bless them.
takecare khen enjoy and keep vlogging
very cool Ken! Would love to be there right about now! Thanks for sharing!
You should have visited Bantayan Island the last island part of Cebu.. so many Europeans living there.
Hi ken, how are you! Since you like to explore yourself in the Philippines. You should try to visit the Camiguin island and Palawan island.
As you drive through different towns you're going to see these round houses they are called gallera or Galleria that is where they have chicken fight every Wednesday or Sunday and people bring their chickens there and pit them against other chickens for money. They tie little sharp knives to their leg one knife on one leg of the chicken and they fight to the death
If you noticed all that wide open land that you're riding through that is because it has been used to grow sugar cane that is the tall thick grass that you're driving past some of it is still fellow but some is sugar cane
There’s a certain place where there’s cockfighting .. usually on weekends and it is called “sabungan”
