Barry Sanders and OJ Simpson. Only RB's to put up 2000 yards in 14 consecutive games. Sanders did it at 29 years old, with an average at best offensive line and a subpar QB. Most impressive feat any RB has achieved in my opinion.
Jim Brown is the greatest. Barry Sanders is great and possibly the most amazing combination of balance, speed and instinct. Jim Brown was physically gifted, but was also the most willful player to play the game. He understood on-field psychology better than any other player and dominated his opponents by forcing them to play his game.
I'm really surprised that nobody mentioned Walter Payton. He was a TRUE running back! Like Jim Brown, he was a combination of speed, power, toughness, and heart, a real competitor! Those other backs were great, but not like Payton! And unlike Jim Brown, who wouldn't block, Walter could put a blitzing linebacker on his back! He was a ferocious blocker! I have never been a Bears fan, but how could any football fan not be a Walter Payton fan?
Jim Brown has an interesting point about true running backs. He mentions John Riggins FIRST, who in his thirties finally got his chance to carry the ball like he wanted carrying his team to a super bowl, one of few backs to do so. Brown says that flashy 80 yard run with jukes to score 6 points is not as destructive to a defense than what Riggins did. Just 4 yards every carry, 12 minute drives, controlling the clock and game. The other team cant score if they dont get the ball. That wins titles.
The best analysts know this; Brown was an excellent announcer but wasn’t on the air very long, unfortunately. He was on with Vin Scully and George Allen which was a great team
Deciding who is the all time best running back is impossible but talking about your favorites is a lot of fun. There are just so many in the past and they keep coming non-stop.
Donu Duty Couldn't agree more. It is fun to theorize who you would take. Everyone would say something different. Some would take Barry, some would take Brown. I would take Walter ;-)
Emmitt Smith should be mentioned, he was a dominate back whose line was terrible before he arrived. In the words of Jim Brown, "A great back makes his line..."
many great backs with many skills over the years, the only one i ever saw that had the ability like jim brown "to control the game", was maybe earl campbell in his prime, jerome bettis for a while, a guy named christian okoye was a phenom but completely misused, so many time the k.c. chiefs tried to spread around the ball when they should have been just giving it to okoye, dude was unstoppable for a brief time.
I saw Jim Brown and I've seen every other runner. I never saw any human being that could run like Jim Brown. The man was unstoppable and was a freak of nature. He could run over you, break your neck, and run away from you if he wanted to. He was inhuman and beyond anything we have ever seen and maybe...ever will see. Just imagine him playing with the extra games that the modern backs have??? He would have had at least six seasons with over 2,000 yards each year.
Jim Brown: There Are Many Great Running Backs In The History Of Pro Football, But I Truly Must Say That Number 32 For The Cleveland Browns Is An Unique, Ultimate Running Sensational Athlete!!!! GOD-GIVEN
The only one who was truly comparable was cookie Gilchrist, who ironically spoke with brown one on one in Cleveland but never played there. Look him up on RUclips
Brown has always been the last word on backs, dating back decades. Pithy and straight to the truth. Totally agree on Sanders, always believed that. Sanders did not deliver when it counted, including putrid playoff performances.
@ron2ce This is true. I think Barry is overall, the most "overall" natural runner in history. Emmit cannot be compared to anyone else because he had the best line ever. Barry would have shattered all records with that line. 1. Jim Brown (he average 100 yards per game and 5 yards per carry for his CAREER). 2. Barry Sanders (watch the highlights). 3. Payton (broke Jims all time record). 4. Juice (2000 yards in a 14 game season). 5. Emmitt (he one dancing with the stars). In the top ten- Thurman
Very few people remember him, in part because it’s so long ago, in part because it wasn’t highly publicized on TV, and now because there’s not much video evidence. There is something now on RUclips which will give you an idea why he was actually comparable. Ironically, Gilchrist almost played in Cleveland
+first last emmitt smith played behind arguably the greatest offensive line in history. nate newton, erik williams, larry allen, mark stepnoski, mark tuinei, i remember many times emmitt running for 12 yards before he had to make a move.
And for anyone who thinks Jim Brown isn't the best remember these numbers that will never be touched. 104.3 yards per game. 5.2 yards per carry. And the most remarkable 0 games missed. Never missed a game and was way ahead of his time, backs in those days weren't even close statistically. Payton is the most complete back ever, and Sanders the most fun to watch, and not to forget Campbell, Dickerson, Smith, Sayers, but Brown was better, hands down.
@cbrowninbuffalo Football is the ULTIMATE team game. Barry CARRIED the Lions every year. Thurman and Emmitt had talented teams with great coaching staffs. Barry was like Jordan in '85. If Barry had Mike Martz or someone to use him more as a receiver and management who got some protection, Barry would have numbers that dwarf the game itself. 1. Barry 2. Jim Brown 3. Sweetness 4. O J 5. Emmitt
Nope… He’s a data nerds dream but was greatly missing key ingredients brown touched upon with Riggins… Sanders didn’t do short yards, Sanders wasn’t physical, Sanders didn’t move the chains, and take a look at his playoff stats
@@hardcorehouse Sanders was the smallest back in the league, and had no offensive line or Quarterback. He was the team other than a little offensive relief from Herman Moore.
@@j-remy9832 You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about because he had two pro Players on the offensive line; instead, you bought the popular and incorrect Internet gossip. The run n shoot gimmick that he played in was perfect for accumulating yardage between the 20s. Data nerds love Sanders, who was not better than OJ in accumulating yardage by the way
No, Manny with agree with his comments that are more accurate than most. I liked him as an announcer late 70s with George Allen Vin Scully; they were a great team. The truth is, Barry had great stats but couldn’t move the chains, couldn’t get short yards, wasn’t consistent and wasn’t physical. His playoff stats were fairly horrible
Typical Jim Brown bull on great running backs making the line. Its the other way round. There have been many good running backs that were a product of a O line and Fullback. They get traded to a team with crappy line and they all of a sudden are terrible. Barry had NO FULLBACK and NO O LINE. Look how Barry did in college with a decent team.
Barry Sanders was not as good as Gale Sayers, or OJ, IMO. Sanders was useless on third down and consistently ran for negative yardage; I can´t remember him breaking any tackles.
Agreed; those who are in love with Sanders stats never account for his nonexistent contributions for short yardage, moving the chains, playoffs, blocking
These guys will say whatever Jim Brown tells them to say.
Jim Brown will always be the best.
He was power that ran over entire defenses.
He could not be stopped.
George Vreeland Hill

This is hilarious. Brown is crapping on everyone on the panel..he's basically saying "I played with garbage and still stomped all of you."
I always found Brown quite accurate in his football acumen.
