Shaun, you ate some of the best cheesesteaks Philly has to offer! Your viewers gave you great recommendations. I'm also so glad you got to try DiNic's famous roast pork sandwich. It's often overlooked by tourists, but to us locals, this is a great sandwich. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Philly!
As a Philadelphian, I won't fault you for not liking the roast pork. It can be an acquired taste. The fact that you tailgated in 40 degree weather makes up for not liking the pork sandwich. lol
I have some Philly residents backing me up on this, that the best sandwich in Philly isn't a cheesesteak. It's the Dinic's in Reading terminal with the roast pork and broccoli rabe you tried
Never has a cheesesteak in Philly, but I like the idea of the mincing. I hate it when you bite into a sandwich and half the contents come out with your bite.
Dalessandro's is in my old neighborhood! Their steaks helped me pass Calculus and Trigonometry in high school. I'm glad you got to visit Philadelphia! Seems like you had a great time. As for chopping the meat, I don't like if it's chopped too fine. The meat needs to have a little substance to it or else the meat flavor is lost in the cheeses, onions, etc. I like American or Provolone cheese, never whiz.
Rocky seems like a great guy and a fantastic tour guide. Hopefully, the next time you're in the states you can do another series with Rocky and Tekka. He does a great job of explaining Americana or is it Americanisms. It's great to see Tekka included in your videos now. Where will the next trip be taking you? I would love to see you head back to New Orleans again. You never see enough in just one visit.
You haven't tailgated until you have done it at a Kansas City Chiefs football game. A cloud of smoke hangs over the parking lots and surrounds the stadium from all of the tailgaters cooking their food before the game. It is a blast.
I give you credit for trying cheesesteaks from four different places. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and to be honest the first one looked the best to me because it looked nice and juicy, but I would never have went into that neighborhood. We would have gotten out of there as quickly as possible. The last place looks pretty good also and it seems like a nice clean place in a much better area. Thanks for showing!
You always have to melt the cheese in w/ the meat. I'm not a wizz fan but prov or amer is the best. We had a a shop in Quakertown, "J's subs" north of Philly that made the best cheese steaks. I know its the 80's but you never had to ask for extra meat. That 1 sub they ate looked like zero meat. You could order a 12 w/ onions/mushrooms/cheese maybe marinara and pickles on top. Moved to FL. in the late 80's and found Buffalo wing company. They had wings from many places and had subs from 12 different cities. Owner was from Pittsburgh but alas all of the good ones disappear. Nobody in FL makes a good cheese steak except for yourself. Wizz comes in a can, I'll take sliced from the deli.
Random about Philly; William Penn has a statue on top of the original City Hall.Pennsylvania basically translates into Penn's quiet woods. Now the tallest building in the city (Comcast) also has a figure of William (Billy) Penn on top to just so he can keep an eye across those woods.
I like the meat chopped (no choppy, no eaty) and Delassandro's is my favorite place. You went to great places. Come back to Philly in the Summer and catch a Phillies game.
You should try Philippe's famous french dip sandwiches in Low Aneles. He sure to get sides of food slaw, potato salad and not horse radish mustard. When you're done with that visit nearby Olvero Street to see historic Los Angekes with its shops, restaurants and historic buildings including the Pueblo church dating back to the 1700s.
Walking around in kilts….one would think that would grounds to get the shit kicked out of you in Philly, but any true Philly native knows, “real recognize real”.
You have to put hot peppers on it! My favorite is Steve’s Steaks which is fried up in square slices! I really love Geno’s and Pats because they’re open 24/7 ! Many parties - late nights - ended up in one of these places. But, if you get a chance get the Italian roast pork sandwich in Philly - John’s in South Philly or DiNic’s at the Reading Market!
Cheesesteak should be chopped up, thinly sliced meat. Thicker chunks would be more a steak sandwich (with or without cheese), not an actual cheesesteak. Some places do a rough chop of the thin slices and some do a finer chop. I’m fine with either chop, but prefer provolone and a good amount of black pepper (no onions/peppers).
@@shaunvlog get their roast pork wet, with sharp cheese, broccoli rabe & peppers. You can try their cheesesteaks, but they suck. Jim’s is the best cheesesteak (order extra whiz & light on the grilled onions)
Angelo’s and John’s Roast Pork are my two go to cheesteaks. I’m a sharp provolone guy. My only beef with Angelo’s is they push Cooper sharp and made it a fad, I’d much rather have sharp provolone. They get very busy and don’t want to spend the extra time to allow provolone to melt. Ricci’s Old Italian would be a great option for an Italian hoagie among a lot of great options in south Philly. A Philly Roast Pork is my favorite. Tommy DiNic’s and John’s Roast Pork are both great. I will say this, they do need some kind of green on them. Peppers don’t hurt either. Rapini is the traditional green, but spinach can offer a better balance, tends to be more tender and allows the pork to come forward. That can be a point of contention for traditionalists along the lines of whiz versus sharp provolone, but at least between spinach and rapini, both are actually food and intended for human consumption. Philly is a great city, a great food town, there’s way more than just cheesesteaks worth checking out. Elsewhere in the comments someone mentioned returning for a Phillies game, that is a very good time and if it’s the right game at the right time, off the charts.
For me the deal breaker on a cheesesteak is whether it's been seasoned right. Doesn't matter if it's shredded or minced. Regular Fanta is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. I'd rather drink the aspartame in a diet drink. Fructose is a nightmare. It really messes with cholesterol and a huge contributor to NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). To each his own I suppose.
For the record: I've never ever had a bad philly cheesesteak no matter where it was from. The best I had was in NY, but PROPS to PHILLY all the way on this uber delicious creation. P.S. I've had Pat's and Geno's -both are good, far from the best, but IMHO, Pat's was better.
I haven't hd one in yrs, Shaun, so I'm probably the wrong one to ask.. But we always had thinly shaved steak on ours. And it's weird to hear people call it simply "whiz". Soynds like a bodily emission of some sort 😅
I love it when food-adventurers from other lands like you enjoy our many unique dishes. I think that American food is very much underrated in the wider world. That' because our food was terrible from 1930 (the Great Depression) thru 1991 (the end of the cold war). Those were lean times for us food-wise, but also a great period of immigration, when we were enriched by the cuisines of many immigrant cultures without realizing it. Then, since 1991, America began to focus on its own indigenous cuisine again, fusing it with our immigrant foods as well as our historic dishes, like your BBQ. And I think we've done this well. But the rest of the world hasn't realized this yet. But now, in 2023, I think that the USA has one of the most delicious cuisines in the world. Thank you for giving it a try.
I think the only way I’ve had a cheesesteak was with thin sliced meat that was at least a little chopped, and orange cheese that was possibly whiz but could have been the restaurant’s own version of whiz. But I’d always rather have a nice big sub sandwich or an oven fired pizza. Cheesesteaks always felt too heavy with limited flavors.
No wonder you guys are freezing in 40 degrees, wearing skirts 😂Love this show. Americans need a foreigner to show us the whole country with fresh eyes, as we just take it all for granted. Love you and your cool accent
It's already sliced deli thin. Different places do this differently. The meat should be stirred and separated, by I prefer not chopping it up. Livin' the Philly dream. I gotta love it. My go to is American cheese, fried onions and mushrooms. Also cheeseteak hoagie, cheese optional, raw onions, mayo or pizza steak with onions, mushrooms, pepperoni.
To set the record straight: Most good Philly shops use Liscio rolls, not Amorosos. Most locals order with American cheese, not Whiz. The best (subjectively) are the chopped ones like Dallessandro’s. There’s no aspartame in regular American sodas, it is high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar. DiNic’s and John’s are the best pork sandwiches but it is imperative it is ordered with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe (John’s only does spinach). Pat’s and Geno’s are in fact tourist traps but the main reason to avoid them is they’re crap.
Dude I gotta stop watching or you’re going to make me want to eat. Good for y’all for trying all those sandwiches! I vote for beef. It’s what’s for dinner. I’m gonna watch y’all’s exploration of the south when I get a chance.
I enjoy your videos and your positivity about the U.S. By the way, I've been told that if you wake up a Brit, including a Scot , suddenly in the middle of the night, they will speak like a normal person. Is there any truth to this?
Also, aspartame’s just for diet drinks, so don’t drink those. And from what I understand, european orange Fanta is more like what we would call an Orangina (do you guys have that there?). Fanta is all heavily dyed and sugared and with fake flavoring. Don’t get hooked on it!
The advice to avoid Pat's and Geno's is wise. I've never understood the roast pork sandwich. Broccoli rabe is bitter and nasty, imo. - A Philadelphian.
To sone extent the rapini is an acquired taste. It can be tough if not done right. Spinach is often offered too and as a general rule, offers better balance, it’s not going to over power the pork.
I don’t know if anyone told you, but you can add to your cheesesteak. Mayo/ ketchup/ hot peppers/ sweet peppers/ pickles. I don’t know a lot of people that have plain.
That’s sacrilege. Meat, cheese (Cheez Whiz or provolone) & grilled onions in an Amoroso roll (or as close as you can get to Amoroso) are the only acceptable ingredients.
Never been to Philly, but was under the impression that a cheese steak was supposed to have fried onions and green bell peppers on it. Did not appear that ANY of your sandwiches were so adorned. My personal impression of a San Diego cheese steak is that it SOUNDS much better than it actually TASTES. I'll pass from now on.
Philly cheesesteaks have onions cooked on a griddle (not fried), and do not have bell peppers at all. Fried onions & bell peppers is like saying sushi should have basmati rice & be dipped in ketchup.
@@bobsmith5185 - LOL. So sue San Diego for putting those on what THEY called a "Philly Cheese Steak" sandwich. Griddle = frying pan, IMHO; that's how they fry eggs in restaurants, and they don't call them "griddled eggs." I hate sushi. Ketchup goes on hash browns and hamburgers. There are three majorly overrated stand-foods in the USA. One is the Phili-Cheesesteak. And another is the New York street-hot-dog. And last is the standard New York pizza slice. Chicago has 10x better versions of each.
No one thinks New York street hotdogs are good. And Philly cheesesteaks are amazing if you order correctly at the right place (Jim’s: extra whiz, light on the onions). Most NY slices are mediocre, but you can find excellent ones. The best NY pizzas are serve full pies instead of slices, like Lucali, Kesté, Montesacro, etc.

@@StarShine-Ranch you’re the one who’s needlessly continuing this conversation. I courteously informed you how Philly cheesesteaks are prepared, yet you keep arguing back. Try using a mirror sometime…
Steve's Prince of Steaks is the best
My comment?
There are three majorly overrated stand-foods in the USA. One is the Phili-Cheesesteak. And another is the New York street-hot-dog. And last is the standard New York pizza slice. Chicago has 10x better versions of each.
No one thinks New York street hotdogs are good. And Philly cheesesteaks are amazing if you order correctly at the right place (Jim’s: extra whiz, light on the onions). Most NY slices are mediocre, but you can find excellent ones. The best NY pizzas are serve full pies instead of slices, like Lucali, Kesté, Montesacro, etc.
it's a crying shame ur dude that took ya to the game didn't get you Yuengling beers... oldest operating brewery in the states nd a banging brewhaha
Dellisandros is overrated imo. Angelos, Johns Roast Pork are the kings of steaks in Philly.
I don't care what anyone says, Pat's is STILL the best steak in Philly.
Wrong. It’s Jim’s. Pat’s is one of the worst steaks. The meat is sliced too thick. It’s chewy.
Both wrong they are the worst.
@@ladyschatze9159 what do you like?
Dalessandro's and Jim's are the worst steak shops .Most Pizza shops have the best Cheese steaks.
Cheese whiz would not be my first choice. Philadelphia cheese or Swiss cheese sounds better.
Two mistakes boyo. Ordering past 5 pm and in the ghetto. An invitation to food poisoning. It looked a sloppy mess.
Cheez Whiz is disgusting. I don't know how you can eat it.
