There is a famous Amtrak line called the California Zephyr that I hear is a beautiful trip. It starts in Chicago and ends in San Francisco. It's a 3 day ride and covers 2438 miles (3924 km) through mountains and wilderness. They have lounge cars that are all glass so you have unobstructed views.
I think some full brates who have worked with us here on the East Coast for one year have used their savings at the end of the year to make that trip. Others simply want to fly to Vegas or California. But 1 who was more frugal did that with a group.
All 4 of the major cross country Amtrak lines are a great scenic (although quite slow) journey across the US. The Empire Builder goes Chicago to Seattle/Portland (They literally split/combine the train in Spokane) by way of Montana and North Dakota, the California Zephyr is Chicago to San Francisco via Colorado, Utah, Nevada (great Rockies and Sierra Nevada views), the Southwest Chief is Chicago to LA via northern New Mexico and Arizona, and the Texas Eagle is Chicago to LA via Texas and southern New Mexico and Arizona. If this list didn't make it clear, Chicago is Chicago because it was the nexus of every major railroad coming from the East and West of the US.
I second this; I’ve taken the Zephyr across the country a couple times, and it’s wonderful! Especially the Rockies. I’ve been on the Empire Builder, from Portland to Minneapolis, once. It’s lovely too, but avoids the Rockies. You get the Columbia River gorge, and then the high plains of Montana and North Dakota, that were scraped almost flat by the last glaciation.
George Vancouver was a British naval officer who had sailed with Captain Cook. He was later sent to the Pacific Northwest during a dispute over the area between the UK and Spain. Later the British Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post called Fort Vancouver that later became Vancouver, Washington. The British lost that part of the Oregon Country to America and later established a new Vancouver in the part they kept, now called British Columbia.
It’s an experience for sure. Lots of scenery and no worries about rental cars , gas , or stopping for food. Just sit back and watch and enjoy America go by🇺🇸
Amtrak is a really nice alternative to flying or driving when you want to do long trips around the US. I've done several cross-country trips on Amtrak over the years.
@@robertewalt7789 But the UK isn't as large as the US is. Y'all have the ability to turn trains more into a luxury than anywhere else, especially with all the US safety regulations on trains.
@@robertewalt7789 "Really nice" is exactly what I meant. You are allowed a different opinion. I have enjoyed my trips on Amtrak. It's a wonderful, leisurely way to travel long distance across the country, and a great alternative to just flying over it and seeing nothing. I can sit and read, listen to music, work on my computer, eat when I want to, look at the landscape across this beautiful country pass by outside the window, talk to other travelers from all over the world who are on the train with me. It's a "really nice" way to travel across the US. I'm sorry if the fact that some people like Amtrak irritates you.
@@robert-joshuamcfaddin7041 Except that there is very little incentive to put up the money to do so. Right now we have bad airline delays and cancellations. Nor does the Caledonia Sleeper offer any roomettes which are preferable in America over sharing a European couchette. Amtrak does offer a ensuite bedroom just like the Caledonia Sleeper...
Hi Shaun. Welcome to the beautiful northwest of the USA!!! I love the Pendleton shirt and hat you bought. The town of Pendleton is located in Oregon and is famous for their woolen mill products, whiskey and the Pendleton Rodeo. Hope you enjoy/enjoyed your trip in the states!!
The AMTRAK Cascades you're on runs between Vancouver BC all the way down to Eugene, OR, the Coast Starlight runs between Seattle and Los Angeles, Empire Builder #7 & #8 runs east and west between Seattle and Chicago.
The better one is from Anacortes WA, about 80 miles north of Seattle, to Sydney on Vancouver Island. It goes right through the gorgeous San Juan Islands.
Great video. Glad you have some cool weather. It's been 108°F here in Tennessee the last few days. I am almost 70 and have never experienced temperatures this hot. Enjoy your trip.
I'm so glad you had a good experience on Amtrak! I've only been on Amtrak once. About 4 years ago, we took a vacation from Medford Oregon to Seattle and rode the train. We got to Steilacoom (about 1 hour south of Seattle) and the train derailed! One of the bridges that crosses Puget Sound hadn't fully opened and the train had to slam on its brakes to stop. The engine and the first 4 cars turned over. We were at the back of the train and we were ok. Miraculously, I think there were only 2 people injured. Needless to say, it was the last Amtrak train we have ridden on.
A trip through the northern Rocky Mountains by train is an experience that will stay with you for life. The scenery is unbelievable, it is easy to see why the mountain men were so taken by the Rockies.
So glad you enjoyed your initial Amtrak experience! Business class was a good choice. It is high praise to hear your compliments of Pendleton Woolen Mills. We love the quality but it was certainly nice to hear you feel it is on par with UK wool shirts. Please give us an update after you've worn it for a while.
I've taken the Amtrak Cascades on that exact route from Seattle to Vancouver many times. It beats driving. My daughter will be going to a University in Bellingham this Fall and we'll be using Amtrak a lot.
Train is my favorite way to travel. It's comfortable and roomy, the scenery is beautiful, and the sound of the horns makes me smile every time. Good choice!
They have done a great remodel of King Street Station, my son and I traveled by train from Denver to Seattle to visit with family (like you). I was raised in the Seattle area and when I visited Scotland in my 20s it reminded me of western Washington.
Thanks Shaun! My oldest daughter and her husband did the Starlight train from LA to Seattle for part one of their honeymoon. That is the most beautiful train station! She sent me lots of pictures from there. We do have a high speed commuter train in Utah, but you can also take the Amtrak from Salt Lake City to Sacramento California. Your Pendleton shirt and hat are beautiful! Pendleton was the only brand my Dad would buy for shirts, coats and hats. They are excellent quality! I have two Pendleton coats. Washington and Oregon coast is so beautiful! I'm so glad you got to visit your relatives and see some different places this trip. Next trip you need to do the National Parks! Especially here in Utah plus Yellowstone, Yosemite. We have about 50 State Parks in Utah that have some amazing geology and Native American history. Only time I ever leave the state is to go to Yellowstone or to San Diego. There's so much variety here. Love to you and Teka💙 🏴

Watching your train trip brought back good memories for me, as my Mom & I used to travel that same route up & back between Portland & Seattle, back when we first moved to Oregon from Washington back in the 1970s. Still have vivid memories of a very nice elderly lady seated just behind us, on one trip, who went out of her way at the end of the journey, to comment on how " very well-behaved" I was! That kind comment has stayed with me to this day -- and made me want to continue being a good person, to never let people down. Hopefully, you can return soon to the Northwest -- perhaps to visit Pendleton itself (in Eastern Oregon), in your very handsome cowboy duds -- maybe see the famous Pendleton Rodeo -- and pick up some cowboy boots, to complete the look! Thanks very much for your always enjoyable videos!

Oh I'm so glad you got to see the beautiful Seattle King Street Station! It has recently been remodeled to reflect it's splendor of yesteryear, as it was originally built. If I remember correctly, those beautiful ceiling panels had been covered up (in the 70's maybe?) and discovered prior to the remodel. It has a great 1920's appeal :) Usually we have more sun this time of year, so I'm glad you found a bit of it in Vancouver ;) Now, on the first day of summer, it looks like we are in for some nice warm real summer weather. Enjoy your tour through our great Pacific Northwest, and wherever your American travels take you. I'm sure America will love you!
I've just finished a month long trip across America using the 30 day rail pass, I'm also from Scotland! It was awesome - I took the empire builder from Minneapolis to Seattle, then worked my way down the west coast and returned to Chicago by the Southwest Chief with a stop in Flagstaff. What a great way to see parts of the States you wouldn't usually see and great value for money!
@@ronclark9724 Flagstaff has always been a place I've been interested to visit, due to it's place as a high altitude training camp for many athletes! I also managed to visit the Grand Canyon while I was there which was fantastic. I must go back one day and visit Texas!

You can see a lot of scenery during the daylight hours. I have heard that amtraks is very nice experience and there are even small rooms available for long trips to be able to sleep, etc. So glad you enjoyed this experience in America. It’s been 2(8 yrs since I’ve traveled on them but, that also went well for me as well.
My husband and I did several cross-country trips on AMTRAK a few years ago, and we spent the extra money for sleeper rooms--well worth it for 3 days on a train! Some rooms have private toilets and showers, and the sofa seats convert to beds at night. If you get a sleeper without a shower, there are public showers on the train to use on the lower level of the sleeper cars. Meals in the dining car USED to be included if you paid for a sleeper, but I can't say if that is still true. The food was great. The glass-enclosed lounge cars are awesome to see the scenery our west.
The train is actually less frenetic than air travel and it's more relaxing to me. You must allow more time for it, and it changes your attitude as a result.
I really miss those foot rests on airplanes. Bygone days. I did a lot of trains when I was growing up. Cross country. A lot of those destinations have been discontinued. Great Australian style cowboy hat! Looks good on you.
just before your stop in Vancouver... was Longview/Kelso... the Kelso High school mascot is the "Highlanders".. as you know.. Americans are very fond of the Sots and Irish.. best wishes on your next stop....PS Seattle had to rain as you left.. to be Seattle proper.. come back in 2026.. for the World Cup.. and you can finally go to that stadium in Seattle (Lumen Field).. . cheers..
So glad you had a positive experience on Amtrak. Nice that you avoided driving in rain and you had comfortable seats. I’m a longtime member of the Rail Passengers Assoc. and have taken A LOT of Amtrak trips, including the California Zephyr on a trip from San Francisco to DC. We’ve taken our car with us on the auto-train from Virginia to Florida twice, gone from NYC to Montreal and DC to Burlington Vermont, plus too many trips on the Acela from DC to NYC to count. Train travel isn’t for everyone but if the journey is something you enjoy as much as the destination, there’s no better way to go. Does anyone really enjoy flying now?

This is one of the few former BN locomotives that kept it's number when BNSF was created.
It is a General Motors locomotive. 2000 hp.
The hat is perfect. Hopefully you will enjoy the rest of your trip.
This spring has been cold and wet - even for Seattle.
I'm so glad that you are enjoying your visit!
LOVE the shirt and hat! Have fun!
Love the colors in that shirt❤️
I love, love , love a train ride!!!!!!!!
Oh my! What a rinkydink station in Vancouver! You have to cross the tracks & no level platform! Got to use a stepstool!
Glad you enjoyed your trip
Thanks! 😃
Something very few of us have likely done, and should. I've only been from RI to NYC
it was a good experience :)
Great hat!🐝🤗❤️ I love Pendleton. They sell high quality things🤗
If you get as far east as Colorado, the Silverton train is a beautiful ride!
That drone footage at the river was awesome!
Why did you stop in Flagstaff? Did you see the Grand Canyon? Sorry you missed Texas. San Antonio, deep in the heart of Texas, should not be missed...
@@ronclark9724 Flagstaff has always been a place I've been interested to visit, due to it's place as a high altitude training camp for many athletes! I also managed to visit the Grand Canyon while I was there which was fantastic. I must go back one day and visit Texas!
11:30. You wore a wool shirt in Texas?? I am curious how that played out in future videos--hahaha. A "Cool" day in any part of Texas in June is 90 degrees Fahrenheit/32 degrees Celsius--hahaha. Thanks for the upload, Shaun. Great video as usual.
Good looking shirt and very nice hat. Both fit you well, just right. Thanks for the video.
It’s pretty there too!
WOW you've been everywhere very impressive
Welcome to Seattle cold/rainy...Scotland in America!!
it was so similar to home!
Our teen daughter sometimes takes the train from Portland to Seattle to visit her older sisters.
All the old train stations look like that most in the east are 10x that size
The train is actually less frenetic than air travel and it's more relaxing to me. You must allow more time for it, and it changes your attitude as a result.
I’ve done L.A. to Seattle a couple of times. Lovely.
I really miss those foot rests on airplanes. Bygone days. I did a lot of trains when I was growing up. Cross country. A lot of those destinations have been discontinued. Great Australian style cowboy hat! Looks good on you.
I laughed when I saw that you had coffee from Zeitgeist - I stop there any time that I go to the train station.
just before your stop in Vancouver... was Longview/Kelso... the Kelso High school mascot is the "Highlanders".. as you know.. Americans are very fond of the Sots and Irish.. best wishes on your next stop....PS Seattle had to rain as you left.. to be Seattle proper.. come back in 2026.. for the World Cup.. and you can finally go to that stadium in Seattle (Lumen Field).. . cheers..
Yay for trains!
Train travel is an interesting way to go. I traveled from Memphis to Seattle (two train) It took three days. I want to do it again. I hope you enjoyed your wee ride.
That hat really suits you.
Shaun, love your shirt and hat.
