    I am a hunter trained in Germany and I have enjoyed the company and support of may dogs, including German Shorthaired pointers, Longhaired Pointers, Wirehaired Pointers. Over the last 30 years I owned and enjoyed the compamy of a Weimaraner, a German Wirehaired Pointer, and a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. I and my wife loved them all, but by far our favorite was the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. His name was Lorbas. We just lost him about a month ago at age 12.
    He was an incredibly understanding, perceptive and sensitive dog, allways ensuring thet he did the right thing. I only had to tell him once, not to go on the road from our 10 acre property, and he never did. We originally got him as a companion to our ageing Wirehaired Pointer Fritz, who initially did not enjoy the young dog's company at all. But when Fritz got old, deaf and blind, Lorbas initiated a routine - unasked - to take the old dog around the property every day, leading him on, caring for him.
    Lorbas was an absolutely amazing dog.
    I summarized his life in a video available on RUclips:

    I had a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon for 13 years when he passed. I miss him, but also miss the breed. And I agree, you need to have space to exercise the breed. I initially had him on the farm for the first part of his life and he grew up knowing the outdoors. As he aged and slowed down, he actually preferred to stay closer to me. If he was mad at me for some reason he'd keep his distance, but overall loved to be right beside me. Ultimately, he had kidney issues that couldn't be addressed. I have so many great memories with him.

    My wife and I are getting a Wirehair Griffon pup end of June from a local breeder. We hunt birds but we also work, not yet retired . Breeder seemed fine with that he stated people have to work for a living, not everyone is retired or self employed.

    Easy to train and love their owners, they can be a bit emotional but they are amazing. Ours does over 5miles of constant ocean swimming everyday around NS. The non barking aspect is also a bonus, please don’t get one unless you give them 3 hours of hard work a day (hunting or frisbee) and spend plenty of time with em.

    • @DogNerdShow
      @DogNerdShow  13 дней назад

      @coskier1969 We would suggest starting with the national breed group. See if there are Facebook groups for the breed and join those. You can ask group members about breeders in your area. You can also attend local dog shows to meet breeders or those who are owners & would have helpful suggestions. As always, you want to visit the breeder at home & meet the mom dog to make sure you're visiting a reputable breeder vs. a backyard breeder/puppy mill. 😊 Keep us posted!

    To be honest you have pretty much covered it all there. I am writing from North Wales & we one of the very few Griffons in the U.K Much more common around the "Med" They are stunning dogs. BUT they are not for first time dog owners. They are subtle, crafty & will pick out any weakness within the owner. We would not be without ours & we have always had dogs over the last 40 Yrs. Stunning breed ...... but please do get one of these if you not grown up around dogs. Griffons are "Special"

    J’ai deux Korthals et ce sont des chiens extraordinaires, et une race formidablement préservée en France grâce à la vigilance des professionnels et des amoureux des Korthals. En France, on dit: Korthals un jour, Korthals toujours!
    En revanche, je suis choquée par l’utilisation du collier étrangleur, une simple corde qui coulisse dans un anneau pour serrer son cou si le chien tire. C’est un véritable outil de torture, qui est interdit chez nous maintenant. Utiliser des outils coercitifs pour remplacer l’éducation du chien, c’est une drôle de façon de les aimer…

    The coat is hardly a "teflon coat!!!" My Griff is a velcro. Everything sticks to her. This is actually my least favorite part of the breed.

    • @kscate1
      @kscate1 2 года назад +2

      Many griffs have an incorrect coat that is soft. What you are describing is typical of an incorrect coat. Incorrect coats require a lot of work. The griff in the interview has a correct coarse coat and it does not collect a lot of debris when out. If your griff doesn’t have the puppy coat stripped out, it may help to strip your griff. You should contact your breeder for help. However, many griffs unfortunately are bred with incorrect coat. It is a problem in the breed. Coats are not uniform.

    • @loniaustin1101
      @loniaustin1101 2 года назад

      @@kscate1 Her coat is coarse. It is a breed standard coat. But burrs stick to her. I am on a FB group for Griffs and I would say this is the norm. When they get back from the field they are sometimes covered head to toe with burrs.

      I am an AKC Breeder of Merit for Wire-haired Pointing griffons and one of the top breeders in the country by any measure. From the AKC Breed standard. "They're known for an extremely harsh and bristly coat that gives them a natural, unkempt appearance." Any griff without a harsh bristly coat has an incorrect coat for the breed. I have two griffs with a medium coat. That is not optimal and not what I breed for. Again if you strip you griffs coat it may improve. As I mentioned in the video, griff breeders have not been able to set the coat because of the gene mixture form the past but we are working on it.

      Hi Loni - Thanks for watching and for your input on the breed! I'm wondering if it's genetics and grooming. We had border terriers and they have wirehaired coats as well...but the difference in our Finlay and Riley was like night and day! The breeder told us Fin had a softer coat, he was "pet quality" not show quality. Riley was show quality from the same breeder and her coat was so much more dirt and weather/water resistant. I've heard mixed things from Border terrier owners too. Some have coats that hardly shed and are very easy to keep up with and others shed like crazy. We stripped both our dogs, but Finlay didn't tolerate it as much due to his softer coat, so we ended up clipping him and that changed his coat even more, making it even softer and less resistant to water, dirt, etc...
