The workbench looks great! I should have made my top like yours. I only had room for a 36” deep workbench, so I used a solid core door, then put a nice sheet of 1/2” plywood over it, so I could flip it for a new surface when needed. The problem is that the workbench weighs a ton! I put those same casters on my bench as that’s the only way to move it, but waiting for them to snap!

I recently built a 42x76 work/sewing/craft table out of 8020 aluminum extrusions with a plywood top and an MDF cabinet, and it's so heavy and solid that I'm going to build a work table for my shop the same way. And then someday I can take it apart and get it out the basement door and put it back together again without having to destroy it.

There are casters out there like you're using except once a bench etc is in place the caster itself can be separated from the plate it attaches to thereby eliminating the dangerous tripping hazard the casters you use pose. Food for safety thought folks.

Nicely done. I built a wood cart a while back with similar joinery for the frame but used a pair of 2x4s in the corners screwed to each other instead of the 4x4. An alternative option that may be a little easier than those 4x4 cuts if you only have a miter saw or circular saw.

Awesome bench. A slight improvement to your torsion box would be to use MDF or plywood for the inside grid so those peices won't expand and contract and disrupt the flatness. I doubt it will be an issue for you, but it doesn't hurt to be extra safe.

I am left handed and I encounter a lot tools that I have to figure out how to use them because they are backwards to me. When I was in a psychology class in college the teacher said left handed people die younger because they improperly use tools that can kill them. Enabling the drawers to carry more weight, when loaded, also adds mass to the workbench; providing further stability. Tight clearances on drawer fronts will help keep dust out.

And many thanks for the AR visualising tool.

As pointed out by Joe Palarchio - Why not use 2x4's for all the framing? In some places what is offered as 4x4 is woefully undersized AND is made from laminated stock anyway, it just costs more than 2x4's because you are paying for the mill to glue up the boards into a '4x4', then the retail lumber supplier puts on an additional 'premium' to the price because they pretend the mill needed to pay more for bigger trees or some similar nonsense.

Can you explain whether or not you had any specific reasons about why you went away with the modular design? Your first iteration was perfect for my 2c garage, but i want the longevity and stoutness that this iteration offers.
Would making 3-4 small versions of this bench be worth it-or should i stick with the original (assuming modularity is primary goal)?
    Thank you

For me, the main reason I wanted to make this one was a solid, flat surface and overall weight/stoutness. I wanted a table that WASN'T meant to move (but I still keep 2 of the modular tables around the shop for rolling around)

Why didn't you use strips of MDF (more stable than the pine) for the interior of the torsion box? Seems like it defeats the purpose of keeping the surface flat if you use some of the most twisty, soft wood for the framework.
