Who else chuckled when he found the box containing the air for the expansion vessel?
You are as sad as me. :-)
Yes I did very funny. And the little accident was funny aswell. Thanks for videos H.G
@@liamcuzzy No Problem :-)
I would have asked who DIDN'T chuckle! You know, just for more laughs! ;-)
😂😂
I rate u 4 showing mistakes. That’s how we learn. We have and will do it.
Haven’t done one of these heat exchangers either.
Mint vid!!!!!
Thanks :-)
Recently subscribed to your channel after watching one of your videos, on replacing a Worcester flow turbine, really helped me out when I had a to do the same thing for a client. Your videos gives me, a newly qualified gas engineer a whole lot more confidence in taking on gas repairs. Especially this one!!! Keep the videos coming, they really do help newbies like me.
Thats great. Thats why I do them. :-) keep at it and they will become simple.
What’s more amazing is that you did it all one handed! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching it. 👍
From small acorns grow oak trees. A honest insight in to your own world of repairs. Bravo
Thanks :-)
I have just subscribed.. Love the dry humor in the videos. As a 26 year old Gas Engineer these help massively. Always nice to watch a master at work.. And like how you put in the not so elegant parts in
.
Awesome, thank you! I'm glad you like it and I think this will be my format for videos. This lock down has helped me get things done. :-)
Excellent video ,I'm recently qualified gas engineer keep uploading many thanks ,and like you said if you don't make mistakes you will not learn .
Enjoy. watch the old ones. I have no time for new videos at the moment. Thanks for watching. 🙂
Fitted hundreds of alphas and really rated. Never had any major issues over the years.
I like them :-)
Really good video mate! it actually shows you the complications and what can go wrong(which we don't see in other videos) and how to deal with it and learn from it. Keep it coming. Thanks!
Thanks. :-) I will keep them coming. :-)
The last year or so I’ve gone from installs to more and more breakdowns. I’m not finding it too bad apart from my hands are often in the way as they are quite big, there’s always a tool that I could do with that helps better but you can’t have them all. Practice has improved my confidence as there was a time I used to stare blankly at them for too long 🤣
We all do that. :-) I have done it for at least an hour on a boiler recently.
Breakdowns are scary but I love these videos 👌🏽 I’ve done the odd bits and bobs but nothing like this
Very good video
@@hakimvlogs6579 The more you the easier they become. :-) Just do more
Reminds me of the time I went to change a plate on an ideal logic not thinking, isolated the cold and just went for it... it was piped backwards 😂😂😂
I have been caught out by that too. :-)
You can learn a lot from making a mistake when you aren’t busy denying them . Good on you for showing us that you do make mistakes after all we are only human. Great video always enjoy watching you looking sharp with the beard growth 😁👍🏼
:-) can't believe I can grow a beard. :-) Its how we all learn.
Experience is worth a fortune in this game your learning all the time with boilers very good video
Good on you Ollie for having the Turkish cypriot flag in the back ground. I'm Turkish cypriot. Good honest video. We all make mistake. I did one on a diverter valve. Instead of pulling pin for the head I pulled pin for diverter. It got very wet.
Brillant, I have done that too. Cost me a PCB... ;-)
Good video mate am gas installer in Scotland don’t do much breakdowns but watching some of your videos gives you some good pointers that I have took into jobs so keep up the good work pal and stay safe 👍
Thanks 👍I will do. Thanks for watching. :-)
Nothing better than a genius showing his mistakes 💦 shows us youre really human! Great vid again 👌
I didn't learn from a book. :-) I burned my hand and the carpet. I flooded the kitchen and the bathroom... Tripped the electrics lost the tools... Put the buckets under the dripping lights...All of it already happened to me. :-)
@@HeatingGeek awesome mate, I done my apprenticeship in installation so struggle with the breakdown/maintenance side so seeing videos like yours that explain and show in detail stuff we come across is absolutely amazing help, cheers for your uploads have a good Christmas mate🎄
Hi🙋♂️ I am trying to start learning about this type of boilers .
Thanks for your videos . It's very helpful
Great video. Well done for leaving the clip of doom leak in the video! Not many would have.
Thank you! Thats a great name :-)
Good job, I also repair boilers in Spain, from today you have one more follower, greetings from Spain
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching. :-) Hope your safe and well. :-)
Im very impressed that you do everthing one handed!
Its a learnt skill. :-)
That long pin holding return with mains,,kinda boby trap..lol indeed that is learning point from here too. Thanks again
Well I can put my hand up and say I’ve forgot to turn the mains of once’s and never again 😂 it was a very wet Baxi duo tec !
:-) I wasn't working on the mains side.... As far as I knew. :-)
Or when you do isolate the mains and the hot and cold are piped the wrong way, stop cock under the wooden floor no access not that was a bad day
@@lami150sx Thats a good story a few months later though. :-)
Good on you for showing the mistake, we've all done it!! As you say live and learn. Some people seem to think it's all so easy doing repairs then things like this make them realise its not so glossy and perfect.
Really enjoying your vids especially with wiring. Thanks from a new subscriber, keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍 I have more coming. :-)
Breakdowns are scary but I love these videos 👌🏽 I’ve done the odd bits and bobs but nothing like this

Another great video, someone like myself who struggles coming from install to breakdown at the minute your videos do help me , especially this one, and your right sometimes you have to crack and give it ago.
Thats it. The only way to learn. Don't pass on your problems to the customer though. A lot of guys try to. If you own your mistakes you will learn much faster. :-)
Nice job buddy. Those clips are a godsend and a nightmare! Confidence also comes from just going full out and get stuck in.
If you don't start you will never
Good on you for showing the FU. Good job you were not working on a ship system, similar (simple) mistakes have resulted in the near loss of the ship (HMS ENDURANCE) - safe to work covers all systems not just elec trickery ?
Every day is a learning day in life.
Don't get to shower in a customers kitchen everyday though:-)
Great video as usual. 👍🏽 Looks like alpha have made a cheap cast Alu heat exchanger boiler to compete with ideal and now every other brand ! So I’m guessing every service requires to remove the flue collector and the boiler and burner to flush the internals of the heat exchanger.
Yes, I think every 2 years this heat x is meant to be removed to clean it. :-)
As long as you learn from your mistakes like we all do then you will be fine 👌👌
Thats it. Simple advise, but completely essential to improving your skills. :-)
I hope you and your family are doing well, and top job.
Yes we are, Thanks. you?
Great vids. Much prefer doing breakdowns than installs
Glad you like them! I don't do installs :-)
Thanks Ollie ...brilliant videos ....best on you tube without doubt ....

Have u got a amazon link for the box of air for the expansion vessel pal could do with a couple of them for the van just in case 😂

Why don't boiler designers make thinks a bit easier, but they do now, the new Worcester 8000 series where you can take off top sides bottom of the casing and parts are colour coded for engineers. Great video mate, well done.

Slow clap for Alpha Heating, genius hydroblock design guys 10/10.
Saves a clip :-) = more better :-)
Nice one respect for that
That’s a lovely purple jumper!!. Being serious though top work as usual. As my old school journey man said.... you learn the most buy fuc##ng yourself rather than taught by me. Been there and done it with alphas, normally they leak when the water goes back on, not when your stripping them 🤣🤣.
That last comment made me laugh. :-) Mistakes are how we learn. Everyday, unfortunately. :-)
Well done mate. Good luck
Thanks :-)
Good to see u olie hope your well mate.
Still in North London? What are you up too?
@@HeatingGeek yes mate still in north London. I just been on the install side. Been doing a lot of install work but ive started to try get into breakdowns so started watching some videos and what a surprise to see you on here haha. Good on you mate always rated you as a engineer.
@@jerrickcajigas3113 Things all good with your family etc? I haven't seen Michel in a while. He's doing ok though with the TAXI etc
@@HeatingGeek yeh family is all well. Kids have grown. Hope yours is well. Last time i spoke to you, you only had one child. Spoke to Michael few months ago he seems busy doing his taxi driving. You just self employed?
Olie i have a question for you if you dont mind. Just went to check a glow worm betacom 24. Boiler does fire up once there is a demand ive seen the boiler ignite and flame comes on. Problem is after around 5 to 10 seconds boiler just cuts out and locks out. Ive checked fan, pump which are fine cause the boiler has fired up. Checked gas pressure on the gas valve which was fine too. Question is, what is causing it to lock out straight away? Condense not blocked flue aint blocked either.
The best thing I ever did was to get on a baxi course that showed me how to use a multimeter properly.
I have heard great things about it.
This boiler is like Worcester boiler workin very good but a pain to fix
Thanks for this vid
No problem. :-) Glad you watched it. :-)
Great video as always 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching it . :-)
My daughter has this same boiler and we just can’t seem to get the up stairs radiators to heat up. Down stairs is Working ok. I have tried to switch on manually but no look. I can hear it clicking, but not engaging. It’s a Alpha boiler.
I guess it's fixed now. I bet it wasn't a boiler issue. Maybe air
Great video 👍 great advice 😁👍
Thanks :-)
are the Alpha HX prone to failure as the Boiler doesn't look that old
No. this is the only one I have ever done.
hi i have the alpha e tec 28 fitted, ive got some knocking and i was wondering if you could help.
everytime it starts up it makes some clicking sounds usually 3 or more, but i think thats normal straight after there are 3 knocking noises that can be heard around the house. it also does the 3 knocking sounds everytime it shuts down. many thankyou HeatingGeeK
Thank you
No problem. :-)
HeatingGeek I have been installing boilers for years and I always wanted to change direction. I know it takes time and experience, did you go in any boiler fault finding courses? And what is a patron on your channel? Sorry I’m sending from my RUclips channel my name is Norm from Essex.
@@onemandrone Patreon is a way to support content creators. You just give a few bucks (Yes its American) to the creators and maybe get some perks from them along the way. :-) I wouldn't recommend any courses at the moment. Just spend the time to diagnose the fault with 100% certainty and you will improve every job. We all get things wrong and you do learn from your mistakes.
@@HeatingGeek Thank you. I did a sime repair today on a Potterton Performa. On heating and hot water the boiler fired up and after about 15 seconds it cuts out and restarts. I cahnged the Electrodes and leads and done the trick. What i really need is a good Multimeter like your one, as the one i have isnt the best. Maybe you could do one day an online live chat with your group Q&A's? But thank you, and i check out the patron
The heat exchanger seems indestructible, were the waterways partially blocked? Could hexs of this type be reconditioned offsite - assuming sufficient money and patience?
loved it been there and cried
:-) :-) Glad I'm not the only one. :-)
@@HeatingGeek try vaillant sine18 and vcw 221/ 242 etc

Hey I’ve sat and watched your videos tonight, I have a vaillant 837 like you have (if you still have it) I want to fit a nest thermostat 3rd gen to it, can you do a video for the wiring? I have an old wirelesss thermostat attached to it already so I am hoping it will be an easy replacement
The wiring is the same.
@@HeatingGeek the wireless wireless thermostat I have currently is a CM927, I just literally need to take the cover off and swap the cables out into the NEST Heatlink?
Quality 👏👏👏 ya right though just jump in head first ....bit of confidence and a patient customer goes a long way as I’m gonna find out 😂
Just don't penalise the customer for your mistakes and they will remain loyal for ever>
HeatingGeek 👍 totally agreed.
Another great video, thankyou. Why did gas valve take time? just interested
Good question! I have a video on setting them up. All the boilers with his gas valve take a while to set up. Baxi GA Alpha intec 2 and Warmhaus all have this valve with the same sort of set up. You have to set ignition , high and low combustion rates. But the button pressing isn't very intuitive and it gets confusing. Also you have to wait for the boiler to try and set its self up.... By the time you get to adjust the boiler is usually about to shut down on temperature... Poor logic in my opinion.
Feel for you mate.
I've done the same on another alpha. Pulled the clip out and water everywhere. Took me a second to realise what had happened. I blame the ass hat who thought it would be a good idea to use one clip for the ch and a mains pipe
Ass hat :-) I won't do it again. Clip of DOOM will live with me.
you mentioned in a previous video that you do work for insurance and manufacturers.. some time could you explain how you got in with these or recommend how you may approach company's doing subby work...
im self employed gas engineer and with covid it has died down massively but ive always wanted to get on with companys to do subby work but would not know where to start..
stay safe!
I just kept pestering them. Honestly, that's It. Get an email address and email it. Ask for application forms fill them out. Ask engineers when you see them. It took a few years with most of them.
Hi mate, another great vid! question, if you have already changed the pump and ntc's first how do you go about charging the customer? obviously you were not going to change the main heat exchanger first off but I've sometimes found it awkward to tell customer the part I've fit hasn't completely solved the problem, just interested to hear what other Engineer's do. Really enjoy your vids, great work
It was all insurance. I didn't change the other parts and I didn't say the main heat exchanger was needed. I was lucky in this job because the customer was just paying a monthly fee to BG. I was sent by Alpha who were doing BG a favour (under warranty) and replacing the part. :-)
Do you rate the Eco Tecs ? Worth an install?
Sorry I didn’t respond to this comment. I didn’t see it in my feed. :-(
Been a subscriber and follower for quite sometime, excellent vlogs from a 10/10 diagnostic / logic engineer. can you give some insight to the Vailant 937 dip tube replacement, the hot water flow sequence through this boiler, the flow rate test covered the plate, does this include the the stored water which was impacted by the dip tube, also the flow rate when pre- heat is on and the shunt pump is in operation. I know its a big question, but unable to find any insight from the MI. really appreciate any insight you have. Fantastic channel keep up the good work
That is a big question that I can't really answer with words alone. I have quite a bit of documentation on that boiler. ;-)
@@HeatingGeek I really appreciate your response. The MI pdf for installation / fault/ srvc offers no flow sequence of operation. Would it be possible for you to identify the MI documents and their reference number that you have
Top man
Thanks :-)
I believe I have pulled a clip with a similar result... but there was no witnesses :)
I wish the camera was on. :-)
fantastic video ollie what would your charge for a job like that?
My rates are the same on all jobs. :-) 150 labour. + parts. This was a job for someone else. I got £65......... But I made a video and learned a lot. :-)
HeatingGeek thanks for the reply really enjoying your videos best heating engineer on youtube by far👍
Ferroli Domicompact taught me the same lesson but mine cost me a board :)
I was really lucky on this one. The PCB cover is made well on this one though. :-)

Looked a nightmare, no more just spanners and screw screw drivers. Seems common now ally hex failing, looks like u got. Robbed, that box of air could of been free elsewhere! Ha ha,top job mate
I have to vessel air for sale on Ebay. :-)
I in fact think you should be growing your beard though looking good !!! However, regarding setting up the gas valve is there another bid coming?
I already have a video on them.... Not fun is all I will say :-)
A CLASSIC MATE WHEN u need to get it done quickly

Hahahaha,i think some air escaped from the box :)
No still a full box. You can buy it on Ebay now. :-)
Ur lucky that drained
Nah, These have been ok for me.
I think that clip is a bit of a crap design from Alpha really. We have a lot of alphas on contract and they're not the nicest to work on, the MIs could be better too.
I think you get used to them. This hydroblock assembly is difficult to trace leaks on. :-)
I feel like customers make repairs more scary
Breathing down your neck
Or being very arsey
Especially when you have a review on the line
Sometimes the hardest part is finding out what’s actually wrong, especially when it could be one of many issues
The whole review thing is only to protect them. I will just be honest all the time. Some times people don't like it but what can you do.
This is why the pandemic has been handy in some ways, just tell them they can't be in the room 😁
What a ridiculous boiler that is why i love vaillant easy, quick amd is working. However is it your boiler or a customer? First i have seen the boiler is in a cupboard installed at the left i dont think it is save. In general the boiler as to have 7.5 cm distance to combustible materials or the material has to be covered with non combustible material. I have seen at your boiler video thats approximately 2cm. Your or your customer boiler is at this moment at risk. However if the boiler doesn't get enough air secularisation which will be mentioned at the manual it is possible the heat exchanger is getting to hot or the whole boiler.
Unfortunately you are incorrect these boilers only require 5mm clearance on the sides and looking at the video it is more than that therefore this boiler would not be at risk
How much do you earn a year son?
Depends 50-80 usually. You?
HeatingGeek Jesus Christ! I’m on 35k but I ONLY fit bathrooms and fit the odd cooker. I reason I asked though is I have the same tracksuit top as you.....🤣
@@simonstones1918 What did you think I earned?
HeatingGeek god, don’t really know fella. I know the boiler bashers around my way (employed) are on about 32k . I would have thought a guy like yourself at the top of his game, in the location you are would be on 60k
Are you a plumber.
I try and avoid plumbing.:-)
hahaha box of air!
:-) Sad is what my kids would call me.
Earn & learn the only question is: what customer says after spending more money on badly diagnosed old alpha eco2 than would have baying new one?Parts you have listed early and main heat exchanger are over £500.00 and obviously non of you gays worked for strawberry picker hourly rate. Flushing both heat exchangers would most likely sort out overheating problem leaving you with profit but not boiler spares dealers.
Your absolutely right. If this was my paying customer they would have only paid for my time. I didn't diagnose any part. BG fitted the first 2 and told Alpha to come and do the main heat x. Alpha asked me. I went and done the job. Boiler fixed. Customer pays £20 a month or whatever. :-) I would of fixed this boiler for labour and chemicals. :-) I don't replace parts that don't need replacing. And I would never charge a customer for parts that I got wrong.
Nice flag in the background.
:-) I should of been there last week... :-(

Best part of video at 11.15 lol
I had to check if it was the water everywhere or the box of air. :-)
If it is your boiler i suggest change to a vaillant everything much easier. After everything you changed and the time you invested would it be cheaper to buy a good and easy one to change parts.

Don't be silly. Covid is causing loads of problems. I haven't worked in 5 or 6 weeks. Its a bit stressful
Just a question me old mate. About a Worcester Boiler filling key which is now stuck, I didn’t know that the mrs topped the pressure up in July, me checking the boiler the other day to find the key is stuck, is there an easy way to prize this key out so I can replace the key. Thanks boss advise welcome 🙏🏻
You can add a little washing up liquid to the top of the key where it comes out of the top of the filling link. Then wiggle (obviously make sure when you pull it downwards you are on the unlocked icon). It just takes a bit of wiggling
Bet that gave you a fright... great work yet again
